Ain’t This Some “Frackernackle” Bull According to the street committee members of Sisters Inc., the charitable arm of Gamma Tau Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., an African American sorority, recently appeared before city council sharing an interest in purchasing land in the Liberty District for an event center. However, according to City Manager Isaiah Hugley, for only the second time in the past twelve years has our city council asked for an additional appraisal on properties that have been declared as surplus. The street committee find it funny and at the same time somewhat disconcerting that the only other time an addi-

tional appraisal was requested was when Dr. Robert “Bob” Wright was interested in purchasing Golden Park. What’s the problem? Is City Council afraid Black folks aren’t being charged enough for the property? It must be, because it is hard to believe they would be concerned that “The Sisters” would be overcharged. This is why this community is always appearing to take one step forward but to steps back. A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY MARCH 30, 2017

“That’s My Mama”...Celebrating 90 Years of Life to assure us by dismissing it away with the age old adage; “sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me”. And don’t even get me started if, as a child, we noticed some man who we suspected, real or imagined, as trying to talk to our mama. It didn’t matter if we were seven or seventeen our protective shield would present itself as we were prepared to go to battle by throwing down the gauntlet with the words; “leave my mama alone”.

I first met her on December 27, 1955. She was my first love and contrary to many psychiatrists it has nothing to do with breastfeeding. Today my siblings and I recognize her as mom or mother. More important we know the woman who raised us as our first “Ride or Die Chick”.

As an infant and child, not only did she change our diapers but she was the first one to feed us when we were hungry, console us when we were hurting, bathe us when we were dirty and disciplined us when we were wrong. Her dreams for us growing up wasn’t necessarily for us to be a doctor (although my sister did grow up to become one), a lawyer or even president of the United States it was simply, that we be healthy, kind to others and have a positive impact on society. And of course give her grandkids!

For our part, prior to understanding they were just jokes, my brother, Scoop (Gary) and I issued many a “beat downs” for somebody talking about our “mama”. It was little to no consolation even when “mama’ tried

I have no doubt that we all, as sons, want to make our mothers proud. We don’t start out wanting to be bad, ungrateful or take our mother’s love for granted. However we often do because we know she will give us her last so that we can have the best. We do so knowing she will mortgage her house to keep us out of jail even though time after time we have proven we “ain’t” worth a damn! Because, regardless how old, unemployed, uneducated, and filled with excuses we are she will still allow us to live at home taking care of us by providing us with food, clothes, spending change, and the use of her car.

A son will spend his days chasing after a “big butt and a smile”, and spending his paycheck on weekends “making it rain” for a stripper but when was the last time you recall an athlete, whether high school, college or the pros gave a shout out to his girlfriend or a stripper from the club when the TV cameras did a close up of him during a game. Ultimately every son wants to marry someone who possesses the qualities of his first love, that ORDC, (Original Ride or Die Chick), his mother. Last weekend my siblings and

our children gathered to celebrate my ORDC, our mother and grandmother. It was a special occasion and a blessing because it was Margie Alexander Hailes 90th birthday and not everyone gets a chance to celebrate 90 years of living.

She had a ball but asked only one request when I told her she would be the topic of my column this week. “That’s fine just make sure you put a nice picture of me in your paper.” I told her not to worry because she is a perfect example of how “Black Don’t Crack” and how she looks super fine for 90 year of age. With her celebrating 90 years and my father making it to 91 years of age they give me hope that I might be around for at least another 30 years. Please allow me to close with the following story:

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and he handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said: For cutting the grass: $5.00 For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00 For going to the store for you: .50 Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: .25 Taking out the garbage: $1.00 For getting a good report card: $5.00 For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00 Total owed: $14.75

Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flashing through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she wrote:

"For the nine months I carried you while you grew inside me: No Charge. For all the nights that I've sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you: No Charge.

For all the trying times, and all the tears that you've caused through the years: No Charge. For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead: No Charge.

For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose: No Charge.

When you add it up, Son, the cost of my love is: No Charge." When the boy finished reading

3

what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight up at his mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote: "PAID IN FULL".

On behalf of my brother Gary (Scoop), my sister Dr. Tonya Hailes, daughter-In-Laws Angela and Valerie, grandkids Raymond Wane, Lindsey, Kobe, Evan, Sidney and myself allow me a shout out to our mother and grandmother we love you and wish you many more days, weeks, months and years. Happy Birthday gorgeous!

Don’t Be Fooled By Republicans Running As Democrats Example...Municipal Court Judge Steven Douglas Smith

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

Despite being a majority African American city, Columbus continues to remain primarily in the hands of the white minority because white candidates have crossed party lines to win the “Black Vote”.

Although we want to believe we are not a monolithic people who vote as a majority demographic, in Columbus, Georgia we do, and the white community knows this. That is why, during election time, you witness the inevitable courting of our votes by white candidates.

Our problem, as African Americans, despite knowing their playbook, which has been consistent over the years, we continue to allow ourselves to believe they can better serve our interest than someone who looks like us.

Never has that been more obvious than our local 2012 election for Municipal Court Judge. In 2010, attorney Steven D. Smith, a known Republican was appointed to the position by Republican governor Sonny Perdue. In 2012 Judge Smith, then the incumbent, changed his party and ran as a Democrat against Attorney’s Robert Wilson and Cynthia Maisano.

Prior to his appointment by Governor Purdue, Smith had always voted Republican (See Election History). Even after his 2012 election he went back to voting Republican in the 2014 General Primary.

A perfect example of how many of us were hoodwinked, bamboozled and led astray can be seen in the difference

of his billboards during the 2012 election. In South Columbus his billboard, obviously invoking the sympathy of the African American community included a photo of his family that included his three adopted African American children. His north Columbus billboard, however, detailed to the white community how they needed to vote for him on the Democratic ballot. The end result is we lost where it counted the most, our judicial system. The 2018 election will soon be upon us and not only do we continue to be the majority demographic but as of the last election there were more African Americans, both men and women combined who went to the polls and voted than any other demographic.

It is my hope that when that time arrives we will have learned from our mistake, did our research so that we are informed voters and no longer have our vote taken for granted. Maybe we will get it right next time.

14th Annual March On The Moore’s Ford Bridge Brings Attention To Georgia’s Cold Case Of Lynching In Monroe, Ga

49th Anniversary Commemoration of the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Atlanta, GA (March 14, 2017). On Saturday, April 1, 2017, the 14th Annual March at the Moore’s Ford Bridge will take place at 12:00 noon. The public is urged to participate. The purpose of this march and rally is to demand the arrest and prosecution of the participants involved in the lynching at the Moore’s Ford Bridge in Monroe, GA, Walton County, that took place on July 25, 1946.

The “Rally for Justice” will be held at the First African Baptist Church, 130 Tyler Street, Monroe, GA., at 12:00 noon. Following the rally, there will be a motorcade to the Moore’s Ford Bridge, departing at 1:00 p.m., and proceeding to the historic memorial marker, on Interstate Highway 78 at Locklin Road, terminating at the Bridge on Mt. Carmel Church Road, also in Monroe, GA. This is where the commemoration of the

assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will take place, as a reminder of his contributions to the civil rights movement and his dedication to the call of justice. “Before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the Moore’s Ford Bridge murders were on his agenda. Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams and Dan Young, who buried the victims, had many conversations about this. We must concentrate our collective strength and efforts to correct this atrocity,” said Tyrone Brooks, Chairman of the Moore’s Ford Movement, and the freedom fighter who continues to lead the cause for solving this horrendous case. The day wraps up with a reception at 5:00 p. m, returning to the First African Baptist Church. This event continues to memorialize Roger and Dorothy Malcom and their unborn infant and George and Mae Murray Dorsey who were murdered at the bridge seventy-one years ago.

Minister Hattie Lawson and Reverend Cee Cee Anderson are coordinators for the Annual March. “Our job is to reinforce the foot soldiers for the challenges ahead. “We will continue to fight for justice,” says Minister Lawson, “and to get ready for the Annual Moore’s Ford Bridge Re-enactment that will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2017.”

Unsolved cold-cases are constantly appearing in the news because some determined journalist or dedicated individual will just not give up on the solution to the crime. This is, no doubt, how the Associated Press exposed the following results about a cold-case on March 13, 2017; “Poland will seek the arrest and extradition of a Minnesota man exposed by The Associated Press as a former commander in an SS-led unit that burned Polish villages and killed civilians in World War II, prosecutors said Monday (3-13-2017). Prosecutor Robert Janicki said evidence gathered over years of investigation into U.S. citizen Michael K. confirmed "100 percent" that he was a commander of a unit in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion.” “This is why we must continue to keep these horrifying crimes in the news and before the public. We hope that by calling attention to the murders of the Dorsey’s and the Malcom’s, through coverage of the story in the press, the Justice Department will further investigate these crimes and bring justice to the Moore’s Ford

March 30, 2017

Lynching’s.” Says Lawson, one of the organizers of the April 1st march in Monroe. “This is a cold-case that needs attention, further investigation, and the capture of those who did the crime. Our government must take the lead to unravel these crimes of yester-year, just as they are needed to report the truth on what is happening every day,” Minister Lawson added. “While we applaud Congress for the reauthorization of the “Till Bill” -- The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act of 2016, we shall continue to demand a solution to the Moore’s Ford Bridge massacre, says Brooks.

For more information about the Moore’s Ford Movement and the commemorative events, please telephone Minister Hattie Lawson at 706-207-9010 or visit the Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Moores-Ford-Movement-8779 77362272681/ . About the Moore’s Ford Lynching Two African American couples and an unborn baby were shot more than 60 times and lynched near the Moore’s Ford Bridge, in Walton and Oconee Counties between Monroe and Watkinsville, GA on July 25, 1946. Roger and his wife Dorothy Dorsey Malcom, who was seven months pregnant, along with George and his wife May Murray Dorsey were massacred by a mob of white men who accosted them as they headed home. There were approximately 200 people in the lynch mob who watched this egregious act.
