M&M Dividing Our Community
According to the street committee there is a growing sentiment from both the Black and White communities that the recent actions of Frank Myers and Josh McKoon are creating a racial divide that is tearing our city apart. Unfortunately it is going to leaders from the White community to step forward to rein these two individuals in. If not, the street committee believes we are destined for some difficult days ahead.
Enough Is Enough
In our last issue we discussed a discrepancy with Donna Tompkins, candidate for Sheriff’s affidavits. The question was raised as to why there were two different notary signatures. The accusation was that Tompkins was given additional time to get her paper work in where Pam Brown, another candidate was not. The street committee went straight to the source and asked Election and Registration employee
The Street Committee
Jeannette James to explain. According to James when the Democratic Party turned in forms for Tompkins and Robert Smith, one of the forms was missing. She sent emails to chairman of the local Democratic Party Sandra Ellison making her aware of the oversight and at the same time she contacted Tompkins and Smith by phone directly. She asked them to come to the office and sign them. When they did it was well within the deadline. Bottom line, it’s time to let it go. There is no hidden agenda by the elections office to undermine the election.
What’s the 4-1-1
After the recent texting rant by Frank Myers sent to City Manager Isaiah Hugley the street committee is questioning the relationship between Myers and Nathan Smith (see cover story on page 7). The street committee suggests for a man to send a threatening text to another man in defense of a man
at 11pm at night one could understand if questions surfaced regarding the relationship. The street committee wants to be perfectly clear that if that indeed is the case, they have absolutely no problem with that.
Kudos To Tonza Thomas
According to the street committee Tonza Thomas, president of the local NAACP should be congratulated for taking control of the recent school board candidate forum hosted by the local NAACP. A video recording of the event shows Thomas forcefully and respectfully confronting an individual who was intent on disrupting the forum. Congratulations Tonza!
We Must Do Better
The street committee reports that as of Friday July 15 only 430 votes had been cast in District 1 and 132 in District 7 for early voting. We must do better people.

A VIEW FROM A PEW
THURSDAY JULY 21, 2016
Let’s Stop Acting Like You Don’t Understand When We Say Black Lives Matter because of various reasons. Here are the ones that bother me the most. It Makes People Anti-Cop: The phrase “Black Lives Matter” is not really a response to whites who kill Black people. It is a response to white people killing Black people and getting away with it.
It Has Become too Divisive: They say the American mainstream views it as too militant and anti-white, so even though there are good intentions, it automatically turns people off. Well history dictates that there has never been a movement started by an underclass that has been accepted by the mainstream.
White Lives/All Lives Matter Too: The statement “black lives matter” is not an anti-white proposition. However, those white people who continue to mischaracterize the affirmation of the value of black life as being anti-white are suggesting that in order for white lives to matter, black lives cannot. That is a foundational premise of white supremacy.
All Cops Aren’t Bad Cops: Everyone knows that all cops aren’t bad cops, but one has to admit that it is statistically impossible for every single law enforcement agency to employ a work force that is 100% capable and 0% corrupt, which means, conversely, that there must be at least the possibility that bad cops exist.
I am sick and tired of people, both black and white, acting as if the Black Lives Matter move-
ment is a bad thing. Day in and day out I hear TV journalists; news reporters, pundits
and politicians express their opinion why the very phrase should be done away with
It’s Not About Race: Unless you want to disregard a little thing called facts. A recent study that showed Black male teens are 21 times more likely to be killed by police officers than their male counterparts, and 41 percent of unarmed people shot
3
by law enforcement officers over the past two years were Black, even though they were only 14 percent of the population.
Why don’t you address the problem with Black On Black Crime? Let’s be clear: There is no such thing as Black-OnBlack Crime. Almost all victims of violent crime are victimized by someone they know. White people hurt White people and Black people commit crimes against Black people. Almost every study shows the biggest predictors of violence are socioeconomic status and the relative segregation of the offenders’ neighborhoods. When white men shoot up movie theaters or college campuses, it is never categorized as “White-on-white crime” even though 84% of the white victims of murder are killed by white people. Even though 53% of gang related murders are committed by whites. This might help you understand what we mean you hear the term #BlackLivesMatter in the future.
If you live in Green Island Hills and your house catches on fire are you going to be concerned that #AllHousesMatter? Hell no! Of course all houses matter but at that moment the only house that matters is yours. #YourBurningHouseMatters. It doesn’t matter how long it takes but until the fire is completely extinguished the only house that matters is yours. And that is how you have to view the Black Lives Movement. Right now “Black Folks Homes Are Burning”, and it doesn’t matter how long it takes, we must stay vigilant until the fire is extinguished.

Frank Myers Threatens City Manager Isaiah Hugley By Wane A. Hailes The Courier
What will he do next? That’s the question on the minds of everyone in our community who is familiar with Frank Myers bullying tactics.
The question is a fair one given what transpired at the recent NAACP forum for Muscogee County school board candidates; Pat Hugley Green, JoAnn Thomas Brown, Cathy Williams and Shelia Williams.
During the school board forum city manager Isaiah Hugley said a man, Nathan Smith, an employee with Kinetic Credit Union, moved from his front-row seat to a seat in front of Hugley, turned to him and started openly discussing his personal banking information. “I was shocked, said Hugley, so I said 'do you want to step outside and talk about it? Later that evening I began receiving the following text messages from Muscogee County school board member Frank Myers.”
“Now I know, as I've followed the media regarding school board issues and most notably in this publication, how Frank reacts when people not agree with or cooperate with him. He goes out of his way to make their lives miserable.
‘motherf-----.’
“You then invited Nathan to go outside. As witnessed by many in the room, Nathan followed you outside, where you promptly backed down from your physical threats and told Nathan that you would just handle this with Nathan’s boss.
When I started receiving his “bullying” text messages they appeared threatening to me. I took it as if he was telling me. “you see what I've done for the others...I'll do the same to you."
When asked why Smith was discussing his personal banking information Hugley responded that a little over a month ago Smith posted information on social media that implied that as a Kinetic Credit Union employee he had access to his banking information. Hugley said he contacted a bank supervisor asking if Smith had access to his account. According to Hugley they never said whether he did or did not but assured him his account would be protected from any such violation. “That was one of Smiths’ allegations when he confronted me, says Hugley, that I tried to get him fired. That was not the case.
“And you have the audacity to call ME a bully? “Nathan has agreed to take a lie detector test as to these facts. Are you willing to join Nathan?
“I look forward to your prompt response.”
Hugley responded saying; “The recent video that has surfaced clearly shows there was no profanity used by either of us and no physical threat by me towards Smith. That is typical of Frank Myers, making things up as he goes along.”
is concerned that his action could possibly impact his job. I am disappointed and very concerned that you felt it is appropriate to text me in such a manner.
“Nathan Smith was very disrespectful to the city manager, said Thomas. The city manager told him that he was going to call his supervisor the next morning because he didn’t have any business in his account.”
“I have not had communication with you in any way in several years though I have read about and watched school board meetings and have witnessed your acts of threats and bullying of fellow school board members, and the MCSD superintendent. I just never thought I would have to deal with these same concerning acts. It is my hope that you can find peace with yourself, fellow members of the school board, the MCSD superintendent, and others, as we all work together to make Columbus a better city.”
“I find it unorthodox and even alarming to receive such a threat from a public figure. You were not present at the forum held by the NAACP so I can only assume that Mr. Nathan Smith left the forum and called you because he
“Tuesday night, Nathan Smith sat down in front of you at the NAACP candidate forum,” Myers wrote. “YOU initiated a conversation with Nathan — in public — witnessed by several people — where you were quite hostile towards Nathan and referred to Nathan as a
One eyewitness to the exchange of words was Tonza Thomas, president of the local chapter of the NAACP and organizer of the forum.
In an email addressed to Myers and also sent to the Courier Eco Latino newspaper, Hugley wrote,
Myers responded to Hugley with this email:
"I will say this, however, I was raised that you don't go and pick a fight, but you don't run from one either. I'm not prepared to run and I will stand up to him any day." As I close this article, for those of you who did not grow up in the African American culture please allow me to offer the following translation: Look here Frank, you must not have checked my bio. I grew up in Baker Village, Farleigh Homes, Fredrick Douglas and L.P. Stought. I’m gonna tell you right now; don’t let this bowtie fool you. I’m not what you want. Frank Myers Declares War On African American Clergy IMA Responds, Speaks Out Against “Plantation Politics” About a third of our schools are failing, and they give a ringing endorsement of the administration. SMH.
By Wane A. Hailes The Courier
During a recent press conference, members of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) addressed concerns involving, violence in the community, voter apathy and the Muscogee County school board election runoffs. It was the comments related to the election runoffs however, that moved board member Frank Myers to respond and what some say declare war against the African American ministers of Columbus.
The Rev. Reggie Williams, pastor of South Columbus United Methodist Church, speaking on behalf of the organization said the school district has made great strides under Lewis’ leadership. He noted that the graduation rate had shown an increase, while the number of schools designated as failing has decreased.
“We recognize there still remains a lot to be done and we would like to see more support by the board for Superintendent Lewis so progress can continue to be made,” he said. “And while the IMA does not endorse any candidates in a political sense, we do support individuals that are in the best interest of our community and our children. It’s for this reason that we are asking that there remains a board in place that gives support to our district, to the superintendent of our schools.”
He went on to express that the IMA would like to see an end to the “recruiting of African Americans to run against other African Americans on the board
in an effort to control their vote.” “We feel that individuals that are elected to office out of the African-American community should be individuals that can exercise independent thinking without being influenced by anyone except the citizens who elected them to serve,” he said. “It is for this reason that I strongly urge each and every citizen to study the issues. Think about your children. Think about your grandchildren.”
It should be noted that at no time did Williams or any of the pastors who spoke mentioned Frank Myers by name. In fact when the Ledger Enquirer pressed Williams specifically say which candidates running for election were a threat to superintendent Dr. David Lewis’ vision he referred the reporter to the Courier Eco Latino newspaper. It was the article appearing in the Ledger Enquirer that spoke of Myers recruitment of black candidates to challenge black incumbents in attempt to a campaign against the superintendent. The article also referenced what the reporter called racially inflammatory cartoons that depicted Myers and his “chosen candidates”.
After reading the article appearing in the Ledger Frank Myers went on social media with the following response regarding the press conference: “One of the speakers has a wife who is a principal in the system. I wonder why that wasn’t mentioned?
These people will pretty much say or do anything to maintain the status quo.
... since these preachers seem to be so fixated on race, as to the allegation that I have been recruiting black candidates to run against black candidates, please consider these facts. Aside from the fact that I am a citizen of Muscogee County with a vested interest in this school system and community and I have an absolute right to participate in the political process (as do the preachers), I must point out that the candidate I support in District 7, Shelia Williams is black and her opponent, failed former school board member Cathy Williams, is white. As I read Myers comments on social media, even though I have grown accustomed to and even expect his ranting responses, this seemed a little more troubling. First his reference to “these people” when speaking of the clergy is perceived as a racially coded phrase that serves to reinforce stereotypes that stem from a sordid history of slavery. Nerxt, the fact that he would so blatantly attack the clergy who represent many in our community speaks volumes of his true disdain for African Americans. His veiled attempt to throw “shade” on the wife of Rev. Johnny Flakes, who is the principal of Key Elementary School, who he refers to further emphasizes his contempt. As I was contemplating my response I received the following press release from the president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, Rev. Ralph Huling. The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Columbus, Georgia As ministers in our community, it is our duty
to spread the gospel and work for peace and progress in our city and in the lives of our citizens. In the days when black people had no voice, black ministers became that voice and even today when we feel that certain forces are working against what’s best for our community the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance has a responsibility to let our voices be heard.
July 21, 2016
We want to express our 100% support for our City Manager, Isaiah Hugley. The threatening text messages attributed to Frank Myers that was sent to the City Manager crossed the line of respectability. We should not have public officials attacking and threatening other public officials in this manner. During our press conference last week, we announced our support for the Muscogee County School Superintendent as he and his administration work to prepare our children for the education they need to be successful in the next century.
Apparently our support of the Superintendent did not sit well with one school board member, Frank Myers who is trying to elect candidates who will help him get rid of the Superintendent. We made our position known and as ministers we will not indulge in personal attacks, but let us be clear, we will continue to speak out and will not yield to threats or intimidation just because members of our families may be employed in the Muscogee School System. As be er, for
Christians and as a community, we must better than this. Let us all come togethlay all personal issues aside and work what is best for our community.
It is clear from their response that the members of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance are adamant in their support of the superintendent and they will continue to speak out and not yield to threats or intimidation. The fact that this response came so quickly over the weekend says to me that the clergy are standing together in one accord and are refusing to bow or bend to Myers practice of “Plantation Politics”. Concerning Frank Myers I will end with the following biblical verses from the book of Proverbs:
- A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. 18:2 - A fool's lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating. 18:6 - A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. 18:7
It appears this time, this fool has bit off more than he can chew.

Oh Shelia, Forget The World, You’re Not Even Ready To Represent District 7 tion? You are going to get enough of listening to and repeating what Frank Myers tells you to do, Shelia. That’s exactly why your hind parts are in the aforementioned “editorial illustration”. Tell the truth Shelia, he had the flyer produced and told you to bring up the cartoon and say that your opponent, Cathy Williams paid for it. And you did it. That makes me wonder, Shelia, are you stupid or are you dumb? There is a difference you know, one can learn the other refuses to.
By Wane A. Hailes The Courier
Shelia, after we offered our endorsements in our last publication my intention was to be through discussing this impending election. I was finished, Shelia, because I felt enough had been said and it was my belief that by now everyone had pretty much made up there mind regarding who they were going to vote for. I was finished, Shelia, until I turned on the news Tuesday evening and heard you accuse your opponent, Cathy Williams of paying for an “editorial illustration” of you that appeared in this publication. It was at that time, Shelia that I realized I could not sit idly by and let you continue to regurgitate erroneous information.
First Shelia, I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are, as you claimed during the forum, “a educated, well-educated, black woman” although all evidence to the contrary. With that said let me share with you what the word regurgitate means: re·gur·gi·tate: to repeat (something, such as fact, idea, etc.) without understanding it.
Let’s address the accusation, Shelia that your opponent paid to have the “editorial illustration” of a Caucasian gentleman holding strings over your head that appeared in our publication. Remember the definition of regurgita-
Any “educated, well-educated Black woman“ knows, just like a lawyer, as a political candidate, you don’t ask a question at a political forum unless you already know the correct answer. Your opponent, Cathy shot you down with an intelligent rebuttal that had you sitting in your chair looking like “Sally Salami”. Shame on you Sally, I mean Shelia for allowing Frank to pull your strings like that. Shelia, as an “educated, well-educated Black woman“ you know good and hell well the “editorial illustration” depicting Frank Myers pulling the strings of you, JoAnn Thomas Brown and Vanessa Jackson has absolutely nothing to do with slavery. That is what Frank Myers has used to distract voters from the facts in this election. And one of those facts Shelia is that he can control you because he knows you don’t have a clue of what you are doing or what you are getting into.
Tell the truth, Shelia, when you first saw the “editorial illustration” what was the first thing you said? I know what you said; “I’m not anybody’s puppet”. That, Shelia, would be a natural response. However you allowed Frank and his puppet operatives to convince you that because the words “Yessa Massa” appeared in the caption you should say you are being referred to as a slave and then use that to go against your opponent. Because you didn’t step in and disagree with him is exactly why the “editorial illustration” is accurate in the depiction of you. And Shelia, for the record, if my
intentions were to depict the three of you as slaves, trust me I would have had no problem producing an “editorial illustration” with the three of you on a plantation, picking cotton with Frank Myers as the overseer. Believe that. Beyond that, Shelia let me ask you this. As an “educated, well educated black woman” why did you allow Frank to convince you to put the “editorial illustration” on a mailer and mail them out to people in District 7 with erroneous information on it? You cannot tell me Shelia, that you really believe I would give Cathy Williams total editorial control over my newspaper that would include giving me an “editorial illustration” depicting Frank Myers pulling the strings of you, JoAnn Thomas Brown and Vanessa Jackson for $1122. Say what you want Shelia but I know you know better because you said you are “an educated, well educated Black woman. As an “educated, well educat-
ed Black woman”, Shelia, one who’s supposedly in charge of her own campaign, you would know that the “editorial illustration” first appeared in our April 14th issue. The committee to Elect Cathy Williams did not purchase any campaign advertising with us until July 14th. The fact that it was the same issue we offered our endorsements was purely coincidental. Now Shelia, I know what Frank is going to tell you, but hear me and hear me good. People may say many things about me but one thing they can’t say is that I can be bought. My final thought for you is this, Shelia, after July 26 perhaps you will have plenty of time to reflect on these past 4 months. It is my sincere hope that one of the most important things you take-away from this political process is that you will have learned; “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

In the United States, Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) occurs in 1 in every 2,500 births, greater than that of any other condition detected by newborn screening. Here are a few facts about the Sickle Cell Disease: • SCD is an inherited group of red blood cell disorders. • Among people with SCD, "sickle" or
abnormally shaped red blood cells get stuck in small blood vessels and block the flow of blood and oxygen to organs in the body.
