Camelot Controversy According to the street committee what African Americans in our community are missing regarding the controversy surrounding Camelot Education is that the majority of students who will be affected by this program are students of color. When the street committee hears comments like those from MCSD special Education director Mary Lewis say, “They need a place where they can be successful…but sometimes those kids, they grow out of their meds, sometimes things happen at home, and they need additional support for a short period of time until they can get things back together.” we feel for her. However, when she continues with, “One of the reasons why I’m so passionate about this is that I have staff being hurt… I have staff with scratched scars on their faces. We’ve got to find a place for kids who need more, even if it’s for just a short time, before they go back to their school.” we get the feeling as
The Street Committee
though it’s more about not having to deal with the problems and potential lawsuits. Questions we should be asking is what are the qualifications of the staff who will be working this program and if we haven’t been able to find qualified staff in the past how can and will Camelot? The bottom line, however is if, as Camelot claims they can increase the percentage of students who have failed the ninth grade catch up with their four -year cohorts graduate; if they can increase the number of students leave with a postsecondary plan; if students in the accelerated program grow an average of two years in literacy and numeracy in one school year; if all other students grow an average of 1.5 to two years in literacy and numeracy during one school years, and these achievements can be measured despite the demographics against them, then we at least need to give them a chance to prove themselves. After all what we have been doing isn’t working.

Sometimes When You Win You Lose And Sometimes When You Lose You Win Recently I found myself in house”. For the record this unfamiliar place for me but ence this time, it was an stay”.
the “dogwasn’t an the differ“extended
For those of you “young’uns” who are not familiar with the term, “in the doghouse” it is an idiom meaning that one is in a situation in which someone is annoyed with you because of something you did. In most cases it refers to a husband being “in the doghouse” with his wife. Needless to say I’m guilty as charged.
Now for all of you gossipmongers I am not going to reveal all my business regarding the particulars of my offense. Instead, suffice it to say, my recent actions placed my wife between a “rock and a hard place”; respecting the wishes of her husband vs. doing what she knew was the right thing to do by her very dear friends. If you have seen the movie; “White Men Can’t Jump” well, I now totally understand what Rosie Perez who played Gloria Clemente, the girlfriend to Billy Hoyle, Woody Harrelson’s character, when she said; “Sometimes when you win you lose and sometimes when you lose you win.
My argument, in my mind, was sound. I was standing on principal, on what I believed to be right and only fair. My wife, on the other hand, was standing on what she believed to be the moral and right thing to do by people she cared about. Again, in my mind, I was thinking of us, in hers, I was being selfish and only thinking of me.
I won, but Lord have mercy did I lose! Although the decision had been made and the situation had been behind us hours earlier, my wife insisted on telling me although she did, it really hurt her having to acquiesce to my decision and that it would be hard to face her friends in the future. Of course my comment was, “If they were truly your friends they will understand, If not then they really weren’t your friends anyway and you were better off without them.” With that I went to bed and slept like
a baby. She did not.
I was awakened the next morning with her explaining to me how she had not been able to sleep all night because she felt really bad the way she was made to treat her friends. Once again I referred back to my previous statement, “If they were truly your friends they will understand” and then I left the house. In search of support for my actions, I stopped by the office of a friend and asked her opinion and those of her two female employees. Needless to say I was not prepared for their response. I was told my actions were extremely selfish and they totally understood where my wife was coming from. I left their office in search of a second opinion. I should have left well enough alone. My next friend, after sharing my story with her, couldn’t believe I could treat my wife in such a way, especially how she noted she had come to know my wife as such a sweet person who would go out of her way for anyone. She commenced to read me up one side and down the other ending with “get your selfish a$# out of my office” and “you need to go home and make it right with her.” Talking about a brother feeling foolish. I went to my wife and tried to apologize but I could still see the hurt in her eyes and her body language. That night I couldn’t sleep. I woke the next morning asking to speak with her friend. She got her friend on the phone and I apologized to her, assuring her that it was me and not my wife who was responsible for the misunderstanding. The friend was gracious in accepting my apology. The moral of this story is: standing on principal means nothing when you are standing alone in the doghouse. Especially when it turns out to be an extended stay. It goes without saying that in the future I would rather lose and win, than win and lose.

EXTRAORDINARY INTENTIONS By Jonathan “Bam” Rivers
Blame Yourself

other people for what stage your life is currently in. Your current situation has nothing to do with your circumstances, but everything to do with the decisions you have made. You can't control someone trying to stop your grind or crush your dream, but you can control whether or not you let them succeed. You are capable of doing extraordinary things in life to bless yourself and others, but you have to make the decision to be stronger than your circumstances. You have not been promised a life free from storms, but you have been promised that no weapon formed against you shall prosper! Do you believe that? New PACs Focus on Getting More Blacks into Politics By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor)
In the aftermath of former-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s crushing defeat last November, a number of groups were launched to encourage greater political participation among young people, women and minorities. Recently, the Milk River PAC hosted a dialogue on the impact of women in politics that featured Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) and political commentator Ana Navarro. “PAC” is a common acronym for political action committee, an independent group that raises money to support candidates and issues related to their constituents.
The goal of Milk River PAC is to inspire more African American women to run for Congress. Along with The Collective, Democracy in Color, and Higher Heights, the Milk River PAC is another effort focused on galvanizing support behind people of color running for office.
Milk River PAC and Higher Heights are specifically focused on Black women. Black women voted at higher rates than any other demographic group in America during the 2008 presidential election cycle. Harnessing that political power is one of the many challenges that the groups hope to address at a time when Republicans control the United States Congress, the White House and most state legislatures. The specific goal of Higher Heights is to "identify, educate, and engage Black women across the socio-economic spec-

During the discussion hosted by Milk River PAC with Rep. Clarke and Navarro, issues around the changing demographics in America and the impact of Black women in politics were the main focus. According to demographic trends and national poll predictions, formerSecretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton should have easily defeated real estate mogul Donald Trump. Clinton won the popular vote by 2.8 million votes, but lost the Electoral College vote (227-304), sending Donald Trump to the White House.
In the post-Obama era, efforts to advance African Americans into elected office appear to be picking up steam. On March 29, new Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez asked for all staffers currently at the DNC to hand in their resignations. A massive re-organization is expected after Perez barely won the DNC chairmanship over progressive challenger Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.). For years, members of the Congressional Black Caucus and others have challenged the DNC on its lack of hiring of Black vendors and consultants as the party continued to use the same consultants and staff against a backdrop of historic losses over the last ten years. The Indivisible Movement, started by former congressional staffers, has risen to re-energize civic engagement in the wake of President Donald Trump’s election, in the same way the Republican

Originally the Ninth Street Branch YMCA had its beginning through the efforts of a small prayer bank group in 1901. The first home was a small frame building. In its infancy, the destiny of the work was guided by a committee of Negro Citizens of the community. Among this group were W.E. Clark, S.R. Marshall, S.W. Yarbrough, and Dr. R.H. Cobb. In 1907, George Foster Peabody and

his brothers, Royal Confield Peabody and Charles Jones Peabody, donated a sizable monetary gift that resulted in the first constructed and fully equipped Negro YMCA in the country.
On Tuesday morning, December 31, 1963 at approximately 10:30 a.m., the gymnasium roof of the YMCA collapsed due to the weak condition of the building, snow, and ice. The Ninth Street Branch closed its doors three months later and was subsequently demolished. For the next two years, the YMCA provided programs from a building owned by Dr. S.P. Charleston on Shepherd Drive in Columbus.
On Sunday, November 21, 1965 at 4:00 p.m., a new YMCA facility was dedicated as the Brookhaven Boulevard Branch YMCA. In 1978, the YMCA was renamed the A.J. McClung YMCA in honor of former director Arthur J. McClung for his service to the YMCA and the community.
