To Give Or Not To Give?

That Is The Question According to the street committee this question has surfaced many times over the years. The street committee also recognizes that there is no question that the United Way has impacted hundreds and thousands of lives in our community over the years. As their website reminds us they have been funding local nonprofit agencies for nearly 70 years.

Try as they might however many of the nonprofit agencies that directly effect our community such as the Community Center and The Urban League often fail to meet their requirements.

Unfortunately many of our organizations are faced with the dilemma of “the cart before the horse”. Often in order to

receive funding agencies must be able to demonstrate a certain organizational structure and a means to maintaining financial stability.

The problem is most of the agencies we rely on have never been able to afford to hire the type of leadership necessary to do so. Like we’ve always done we make do with what we have and by the grace of God we continue to survive.

The street committee is not advocating that you stop giving to the United Way but if you have a personal place in your heart for our organizations you might want to consider giving your dollars directly to our organizations.

This is a special request on behalf of the Community Center who recently received word they will not receive any funds from the United Way this year.

It’s One Thing To Say What You Will Do... see that final nail driven into the coffin that contains the “Negro,” the “Sellout,” the “Traitor.” they are often labeled the same by the ignorant and uninformed, but that doesn’t deter them.

Many of the “talkers” have no problem cheering the actual “walkers” on from a distant sideline or slapping them on the back telling them, “Keep on doing what you’re doing”, but they only do it when they are in private. In fact many of the “talklers” secretly deny the “walkers” and or talk against them in their daily professional circles and corporate environments. And don’t even think about asking them for their financial support.

Why is it when those of us who have “arrived” if you will, in corporate America and have the opportunity to hire Black people or at a minimum speak up for other Black employees or Black clients of their company, we feel, instead, compelled to go out of our way not to do so? In most instances we emphasize any and all other races and de-emphasize our own.

Are we so constrained by our own fear of appearing “too Black” that even when we are in a position to speak or act strictly on behalf of Black people we feel obligated to include everyone else?

Social media, especially Facebook, has made it real easy for so called “conscious brothers and sisters” to give lip service to Black consciousness.

A lot of us will “talk the talk” on facebook and other social

media sites, but when it comes time to “walk the walk” very few of us will show up. It’s not easy being unapologetic and unwavering in your resolve, willing to stand up, speak out, and sacrifice your own resources for

the betterment of Black folks.

Those who “talk the talk” and “walk the walk” don’t cower in fear of white opinion or get nervous at the thought of their actions being disapproved by Black people. As they work to

It is irresponsible, it is shameful, it is insulting and it is embarrassing to all Black people, no matter what level you are on,

to mistreat one another the way we do. The work that needs to be done will never be completed as long as there are those who are unwilling to do the work and do not support those that do.

We tend to forget that if it were not for individuals in our pastwho were; unapologetic and unwavering in their resolve, willing to stand up, speak out, and sacrifice their own resources for the betterment of Black folks.

We would not be as far along as we are today.

Let me leave you with this story: “An old man, going a lone highway, Came, at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; the sullen stream had no fears for him; but he turned, when safe on the other side, and built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near, "You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way; You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide-Why build you a bridge at the eventide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head: "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today, A youth, whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me, to that fairhaired youth may a pitfall be.

He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."

So are you going to talk about it or be about it?

No harm, no foul. The problem I have, and it appears I’m not alone, is how she did it. It’s the secrecy, behind closed doors meetings, attempting to play both sides of the fence and worst of all teaming up with an individual known for manipulating Black folks.

All this while smiling in folks faces as though nothings going on.

Just as a recap, in our June 22, 2017 issue we published a cartoon that implied MCSD board member, Frank Myers was manipulating Kia Chambers. The caption that accompanied the cartoon speaks to that: “Kia You’re Doing Great! No Need To Worry About What They Say, You’re Part Of The Team Now! Keep Voting The Way I Tell You And Remember You’ll Be Chairman of The Board Come January. I Promise”.

Now I’m not saying I’m a soothsayer, but all I know is on January 16, 2018 Kia Chambers was elected Chairman of the Muscogee County School Board.

Those voting in her favor were: Frank Myers, John Thomas, Vanessa Jackson, Mark Cantrell and of course Kia Chambers.

For the record my argument has never been whether Kia has the right to be the chairperson or should be the chairperson. She has every right. The chairman is elected by the members of the school board and like any other election the one who gets the most

As we all know, however, just like the saying goes “what you do in the dark will always come to light”. Here is an interesting tidbit we learned.

The plan was for Kia to be Chairman and Mark Cantrell to be Vice Chair.

On Monday January 15, 2018 school board member Mark Cantrell sent a text to Pat Hugley Green congratulating her stating it looks like you’ll be the chairman again. This implied that he and Kia didn’t have the necessary votes. Sometime late Monday evening Cantrell received a call from John Thomas allegedly saying, “It’s ok, Kia is on board now”. We have no idea what that meant but we do know how the vote went.

Here’s another interesting tidbit. Notice how Frank Myers kept his hands clean from all of this. Who nominated Kia? Frank, John, Mark? No he made sure someone Black did Vanessa Jackson.

Who nominated Mark? another Black person, Kia. That’s what Frank does, he is good at getting Black people to do his dirty work so.

Bottom line-What’s done is done. Once Frank Myers and John Thomas are gone here’s what we think will happen.

Without Frank around to guide her she won’t know what to do, what to say or how to vote.

Mark Cantrell: With their absence and the fear of Frank less threatening we anticipate Mark will grow some “cojones” and make his own decisions.

Davis began his career as a community school director in Michigan before moving to television, where he spent 12 years in marketing and sales management. He joined the

ABC Television national sales team in Detroit. He later moved to Cincinnati as general sales manager of multimedia broadcasting before starting his own company in Columbus and Augusta, Ga. by acquiring multiple radio stations in each market.

In 2004, Davis became the first broadcaster to include a Hispanic formatted radio station on FM in Atlanta. In addition to numerous community events, his WLKQ La Raza and La Mega stations have raised more than $1.9 million for the Children’s Miracle Network.

He also believes in giving back to the community by serving on boards across the area including the GAB board, United Way, Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Black Owned Broadcasting. He currently serves as the chairman of the board for Columbus State University.

Courier: What inspired you to write your book?

Rivers: I am a believer in living a purpose driven life. I feel it is imperative that everyone works to become better than they were yesterday by being intentional and acting in a specific manner to achieve their goals.

My purpose is to encourage, enlighten and help people in this world realize why they're here and who God has called them to be.

Courier: What are some lessons others will learn when reading Rivers Logic? Eliminating the desire to procrastinate, embracing adversity and building a solid personal foundation are some of the aspects that are covered in the book.

River: I have taken lessons I've learned in life and shared them to demonstrate how one's story can be a positive influence to others. The problems we face can be solutions for someone else, which is what inspires me to speak and motivate.

Courier: What would you like your book to accomplish?

Rivers: The desire to change one's lifestyle to cross the bridge from where they are to where they want to be.

It is my goals to provide positive and transformational messages to the world and I know this will aid in that process.

According to Recorders Court Senior Recorder, Judge Julius Hunter there has been some misunderstanding regarding posting bond for traffic citations.

According to GA Code Ann. 40-13-23 a defendant may post bond for most traffic citations by presenting their

Please note that the following charges are exceptions to this rule. Anytime an individual has one or more of these charges in their case they must post a State Court bond in the traditional way of paying a cash security bond or using a bonding company.
