What About The Other Letters Of Support? According to the street committee former mayoral candidate Colin Martin, former school board member John Wells and respected members of the real estate community Rodney Miller and Walt Flournoy alledgedly also wrote letters in support of business owner “Sunny” Shah. Why didn’t the mainstream media mention their names? Frank Myers Is Already Recruiting According to the street committee School board member Shannon Smallman will not seek re-election. The word is Meyers already has found an African American to take her place. Let’s see who announces for the District 7 seat in the near future. Al Stewart has entered the race once again opposing Pat Hugley Greene. We will wait and see who will register to run against Athavia Senior. Needless to say we will know within the next few weeks as the registration deadline approaches. One name recently surfaced as running for office is radio personality Edgar “Champagne” Buchannon. We will see.

A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY MARCH 3, 2016

Another Brother, “Gone To Soon”

clubs and parties around the tri-city. Over the course of our lives we come in contact with hundreds of individuals. Our level of interaction with these individuals varies, however, every now and then, every once and a while, one of those individuals comes along who touches our lives in a special way. As word made its way through the city on Friday, February 19th of the passing of James Johnson, Jr. it became abundantly clear that this was such a man. On social media he was remembered for the love he had for his family, the music and his city.

No one called him James, he was known affectionately throughout the community as simply, “J.B”. As one of the founders and part of the original “Super Shop Boyz” he made a name for himself and his “crew” with his weekly Hip Hop radio show on FOXIE 105. J.B. also had a reputation as being one of the best hosts at

For me I loved his spirit. He was a true entrepreneur. Whether it was as a DJ, food truck vendor with; “Love At First Bite,” or as a promoter bringing in top national recording artist through Super Shop Entertainment, “J.B.” was all about making a difference for the betterment of his community. It was because of that spirit in 2014 he, along with his business partner, OO Kee, received one of our Community Service Awards.

That love for his community was no more evident than at his last show featuring Anthony Hamilton. During the show he stopped to ask the community to assist the families who recently lost their homes due t o f i r e . S u s a n C o o p e r, Director/CEO of the Greater Columbus Urban League whose organization was spearheading the event spoke of his generosity. “He didn’t have to do that, she said. When J.B. heard what we were doing he came to me and said he wanted to help. I

had no idea he was going to take it upon himself to, in the middle of the show, pass baskets around to those in the audience seeking their help. Because of his selflessness we raised over $3000 that night which enabled 19 families to continue living in hotels until permanent housing was made available.” My last conversation with J.B. was less than two weeks ago. He called me to his office to pick up tickets to the Tyrese and Tank show. He was excited about the upcoming show but more importantly about being able to bring more acts that people wanted to “His City” as he called it. I asked him what about Prince? He just smiled and said, “Wane just wait, I got it in the works, just wait”.

We then talked about our head strong, stubborn mothers who just wouldn’t listen to us when all we wanted to do was make life a little easier for them. I shared with him how my siblings and I had to insist that my mother stop living alone and move in with my sister. He noted that he was happy

because he had finally convinced his mother to be relocated to a place where she would be happy and still maintain her independence. One of his last words to me was, “I got to take care of my mom”.

This past Sunday the DJ’s of FOXIE 105 came together in the studio to give him a fitting

tribute as they provided “One Last Ride” for their “Homie”. We offer prayers to his wife Tashema, his family and to his business partners. We will miss you my friend. You have truly touched our lives in such a way.

Why President Barack Obama Is One of the Best Ever

President Barack Obama will go down in history, as arguably one of the most successful presidents of the United States. What he has been able to accomplish over his nearly eight years in office is remarkable – especially when you consider the level of obstructionism and racism he has had to endure. Time is one of those magical dimensions of the human experience. At certain instances it seems like there is not enough of it. And at others, it seems like the moment lasts forever. The intellectual and emotional experience in the passage of time is one of those unique aspects about being human that sets us as a species apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. Does Any Presidential Candidate Deserve The Black Vote?

Michelle Alexander, the brilliant author of The New Jim Crow, writes in The Nation – that Hillary Clinton does not “deserve” the Black vote. She makes a strong case. She reminds us that the Bill Clinton administration yielded a draconian crime bill and welfare “deform” (I call it “deform” instead of reform because the Clinton changes made a bad system worse) that demonized poor women. While Bill and Hillary Clinton are two different people, Alexander uses Hillary quotes to illustrate the ways she supported her husband’s policies.

Michelle Alexander is right to say that Hillary does not deserve the Black vote. She declines to endorse Bernie Sanders, though, describing him as “the lesser of two evils.” To his credit, says Alexander, Sanders opposed welfare deform and has been a far more vocal and aggressive critic of banks than Hillary. But Alexander says he still doesn’t get “it” around issues of racial justice, and notes that both he and Hillary supported the Iraq war.

’m intrigued by the concept of “deserving” a vote. From my perspective Bernie doesn’t deserve it, Hillary doesn’t deserve it, and none of the motley crew of Republican candidates deserve it. No Democrat or Republican has ever deserved the Black vote. The dictionary defines deserve as, “to do something or have or show qualities worthy of (reward or punishment).” Read the full commentary on our website at: www.couriernews.org

The 47th annual NAACP Image Awards was a hit at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif., as Black entertainers showed their support for one another and the show, while some expressed concerns over the lack of diversity in other major award shows like the Academy Awards.

“I think it’s very unfortunate that we are not included more often in the Oscars. Whether to boycott it or not that’s up to each individual’s discretion,” said Andra Fuller, star of TV One’s “Here We Go Again.” “The boycott will bring awareness. If you want us to be at your award shows, then recognize us.” The Image Awards honor the achievements of African Americans in television, music, literature and film. ABC’s “black-ish” star Anthony Anderson hosted the show, opening with a “Straight Outta Compton” rap performance spoof that talked about the lack of diversity in this year’s award season. “Hollywood needs to know that this is what diversity is supposed to look like,” Anderson said after his performance.

Since 1967, the Image Awards has celebrated “outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors,” according to the NAACP website.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith attended the Image Awards after publicly announcing that they would not attend the Academy Awards due to the lack of diversity. After the Smiths and director Spike Lee announced their plans to skip the Oscars this year, several actors of color have been more vocal about their views on diversity in Hollywood. “We don’t need to ask for acceptance from anyone,” said “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson when she received her award for outstanding actress in a drama series. “We are enough, we’ve been enough and we always will be enough.”

Creed actor Michael B. Jordan went home with two awards for outstanding actor in a motion picture and entertainer of the year. “Straight Outta Compton” received an award for outstanding motion picture. Read the full commentary on our website at: www.couriernews.org

When the school year begins in the fall of 2016 there will be a new standard set in preparing young men to be exemplary leaders. Emanuel Preparatory School of Math and Science, a school for boys, will provide advanced learning in an advanced society through an innovative and rigorous Math and Science focused curriculum that cultivates 21st century skills, fosters a love of learning and is developmentally appropriate and enriching for boys.

“Our goal, says Headmaster David Hughes, is to develop critical thinkers who will invent creative ways to enrich our society. We believe that boys succeed when learning is experiential, engaging and is structured in a way to effectively achieve the goals of the unit or lesson. Therefore, our curriculum is developed and taught with a projectbased and interdisciplinary approach which allows our students to deeply explore and make connections across the disciplines.”

The school is the brainchild of Pastor Carlos Coleman of New Birth Outreach Church and his father Farnsworth, Pastor Emeritus. According to Coleman the private school for boys will be for students K4-8th grade.

“We intend to begin this fall with our first class of 24 pre-kindergarten students.” When asked why start a school? Coleman said, “God called us to step forward. The church saw an opportunity to inspire excellence and to be a leader in education in areas where the United States and Georgia continue to fall behind.”

Going Through The Motions

In the 1930s film “Inherit the Wind,” the actor Gene Kelly in the role of E.K Hornbeck delivered the line, “Mr. Brady, it is the duty of a newspaper to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” Among a few other things a newspaper should do, what was said in that line is exactly what all newspapers should being doing, even though the reality is many do not, or they do so with bias toward their friends, especially very influential friends. Perhaps the line should have been written to read that it is the job of every “good” newspaper to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Whenever a news reporter slants stories in an effort to help their political friends and favorites hoodwink the citizens, then we are all being sold out by that newspaper. Any loyalist news reporters and newspapers protecting the mayor in her wrong and poor decisions are disloyal to the readers.

Comforting the afflicted when wronged and afflicting the comfortable when they uphold the wrongdoers is very much the job of a dedicated community activist or civil rights activist. I have been an advocate for justice and equality, in one way or another, more years than a lot of people in this city have been alive. I can tell you in a matter of minutes if a person claiming to be a community/civil rights activist is actually a true blue down with the cause for the people activist. I want to make it crystal clear that a person is not a community activist because the mayor or any other political figure out to control leadership and politics in the African American community of Columbus says that you are.

Community and civil rights activists do publicly take on issues of crime, violence, and racial discrimination. They hold rallies and prayer vigils. They certainly organize marches and deliver wonderful speeches that motivate the masses. An activist does all of that, but there is much more to it than just that. What you have to understand about activists in this area is that there are self-serving activists that exploit legiti-

mate issues. Those are the activists you do not trust. Then there are community and civil rights activists that are all in when it comes to the fight for the people and controversial fair and equal treatment issues. Those are the ones the corrupt never want you to hear or know very much about in this city. You are simply not a true community or civil rights activist if you are not boldly operating in truth and accurately delineate, meaning to define or identify, the facts. You sign up to fearlessly speak truth to power, and go to the mat for the people every time out. You must have moral courage and strong personal conviction to go out on the battlefield day and night to fight the good fight for Freedom, Justice, and Equality. Personally, I believe the community/civil rights must possess a strong love and total faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and you must love your neighbor as you love yourself.

Do not confuse political activists with community/civil rights activists. Political activists and community/civil rights activists are not one in the same. Politics and government are where African American citizens get sold out and hurt the most in this city. You must beware. If an individual is just trying to make a name in local news or on some ego trip looking to break into politics for personal gain, if the individual is just another self-promoting puppet for the status quo power structure, then that, my dear sisters and brothers, is not the kind of person we should not have anything to do with, let alone consider electing to a political office. That type of person is really about self and against the community, especially the Black community. Running for political office or being elected to serve in political office is all about them, not about the district, not the community, not the people. That is scary, or should be very scary to you as a citizen period.

Regrettably, the problem I see is that it has not been scary enough in the Black community here in Columbus, Georgia. All too often we as citizens allow ourselves to be led astray and played for fools. There abounds more

of spirit of fear and spirit apathy than the Spirit of God with many of us. Truth is quickly rejected and lies upon lies are eagerly accepted. As citizens, as taxpayers, as voters we must be constantly on the lookout for the wolves in the sheep's clothing just going through the motions to trick us out of our support and our votes. When you fall asleep on guard duty that is the very time the enemy will come in and not only cut

March 3, 2016

your throat, but yours, mine, and every other person's in the camp. African Americans must be especially careful dealing with politics, politicians, and government officials and issues pertaining to government. With our guards down and eyes shut tight, we are as good as dead regarding the genuine progress, true prosperity, and sound future of our community as a whole. Stay alert and stay alive. T HERE I S H ELP F OR F ELONS Arrested, Acquitted But Not Expunged First Offenders records Dunlap said,

“Many people are not aware that First Offender pleas are not eligible for expungement. You don’t have a conviction after you offered a plea as part of the First Offender Act but because you plead guilty the statue says you don’t have a conviction for convictions purposes, however, it remains on a persons criminal history forever.”

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

The stories are many and all too familiar; alleged criminal offenders unable to apply for certain jobs, professions or educational opportunities or seek new opportunities in life because of a mistake they may have made at a young age or in a difficult place in their life. Other stories are more complex. Such incidents include individuals who have proven they have been wrongly accused, arrested, convicted and incarcerated. Local horror stories have been told how even after exoneration and serving decades in jail they find it difficult to have their criminal record cleared.

“The law is clear, says Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Dunlap. Dunlap is the individual responsible for processing all “Request to Expunge Arrest Records” that comes through the District Attorney’s office. No criminal record is guaranteed to be expunged in Georgia, except in the following two cases: • When an individual was arrested for a criminal offense,

but released before the case was referred to the state prosecutor, and • When an individual’s case was referred to the prosecutor, but the case was dismissed before the prosecutor sought an indictment or filed an accusation.

These are the ONLY two instances that we MUST expunge an individuals record. Anything else we MAY choose to expunge their record.” In explaining what the DA’s office MAY choose to expunge Dunlap offered this scenario.

“If a grand jury has indicted an individual for spousal abuse and we later dismiss the case because the witness could not be found. We may or may not choose to expunge your record, especially if in reviewing your record we see a pattern or a history of spousal abuse in your past. The individual may have had ten arrest for simple battery but no convictions. We look at it as a case of they just haven’t been caught yet.”

When asked about expunging

“I understand it may be frustrating to individuals when they apply for a job. The code says that an employer is not supposed to use it against you but no one can control that. “ A criminal record that is expunged is completely destroyed such as fingerprint cards, photographs, and documents relating exclusively to the person. Any material which cannot be physically destroyed or which the prosecuting attorney determines must be preserved for constitutional reasons shall be restricted by the agency and shall not be subject to disclosure to any person except by direction of the prosecuting attorney or as ordered by a court. Georgia Code § 35-3-37. It is basically as if the crime never occurred. There are four steps to having your record expunged. (1) obtain a copy of a “Request To Expunge Arrest Record” form from the arresting agency, (2) The arresting agency has to fill out a form and (3) the prosecuting attorney has to fill out a form. Finally you have to submit a “Request For Expungement to the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC). The total cost for all forms will be $50.

Eligibility to Expunge a Criminal Record in Georgia

In Georgia, there is no guarantee that an individual’s record will be expunged. However, if any of the following scenarios apply to your situation, your criminal record may be approved to be expunged by the prosecuting attorney. According to O.C.G.A. § 35-3-37(d), an individual may be eligible to expunge their record in Atlanta if:

They were indicted, but their criminal charges were dismissed, They were not indicted and their criminal charges were dismissed, Their case was not presented to a grand jury and no indictment was filed, No further action is anticipated in their case, An indictment was filed, but their charges were Nolle Prossed / Prosequi, An indictment was filed, but their charges were dead docketed, or There was no record on file. Additionally, in order to have a criminal record expunged in Georgia, the individual must not have any other criminal charges pending and they must not have any other criminal convictions within the five years preceding the expungement. An individual is NOT eligible to have their record expunged for any of the following reasons:

They were found guilty of a criminal offense, They pleaded nolo contendere to a criminal offense, Their plea was entered under the First Offender Act, Their charges were dismissed because of a plea agreement that resulted in a conviction for an offense arising out of the same underlying transaction or occurrence as the conviction, The government was barred from introducing material evidence against the alleged offender, A material witness refused to testify or was unable to testify against the alleged offender, The individual was in jail on other criminal charges and the prosecuting attorney decided not to prosecute these criminal charges for reasons of judicial economy, The individual successfully completed a pretrial diversion program that did not specifically provide for expungement of the arrest record, The individual was arrested for conduct that was part of a pattern of criminal activity that was prosecuted in another court, or The individual had diplomatic, consular or similar immunity from arrest or prosecution. If you are not eligible to have your criminal record expunged in Georgia, but believe you should be, you may able to contest the accuracy of the information on your GCIC report if it is not correct.

UNCF hosts 800 at Mayor’s Masked Ball Featuring Johnny Gill

By Staff The Courier

The 11th Annual Columbus Mayor’s Masked Ball was an evening of elegance, excitement, entertainment featuring Johnny Gill and a plethora of opportunities to invest in the future of our youth. With a record number of nearly 800 guests in attendance the campaign is poised to shatter fundraising records previously achieved. Trenna Trice, local campaign coordinator advised many efforts are underway to be able to provide substantial scholarships to students in our community. The Muscogee County School District and the City of Columbus will participate in workplace giving campaigns in March to increase student aid. The campaign officially ends April 1, 2016. Opportunities to make a difference and invest in our youth still exist. Please contact Trenna Trice 706-577-3343 or Christine Dawson @ cbdawson@mchsi.com to find out how you can join the movement.

The evening began with a sponsor’s reception honoring corporate and individual donors for the Columbus campaign. Jeremy Ackles

By Nadine Haralson The Courier

Jeremy Ackles is a Phenix City, Alabama native currently living in Columbus, Georgia. Growing up in the projects, an environment that did not always seem promising, Ackles learned that his current situation did not have to determine his destination.

Early on he sought encouragement in the words of Dr. Mae Jemison the first African American female astronaut, “Never be limited by other people’s limited imagination.” With those words, he chose to rise above his surroundings putting his focus on his education. He graduated from Central High School, and attended Troy State University where he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and received his BA in Public Relations and Broadcast Journalism.

With a heart for giving, passion for encouraging, and a mission to improve

his city, Jeremy has played a major role in the Tri-City area community. Ackles was a TEARS Inc. Humanitarian award recipient and serves on an array of local committees, such as The Young Professionals, City Internships S t u d e n t Ambassador, and the Black History Observance Breakfast committee.

Knowing that the future depends on what’s instilled into our youth, Jeremy has served as a “Big” with the Big Brother/Big Sister program as a mentor. “I like to remind the youth that whatever they believe about themselves and their ability, is what will come true for them” shares Ackles.

Currently working as a Child Therapist assisting in behavioral intervention, Jeremy is also a fulltime student at Columbus State University working on his Master of Public Relations degree.

His future expectations are to become a possible Non-Profit Public Administrator, specializing in grant and community development, or possibly City Manager. Ackles states his main concern is to be able to change the way people live, reiterating reasons for joining the Kappa Fraternity, due to their ever involving service and that being involved gives him the greatest pleasure and keeps him motivated.

“My success and achievements impacts more than just myself.”

Alia Torres

som. Working her way from downstairs as a hostess to upstairs as a cocktail waitress, Torres befriended The Loft’s music engineer Steve Meadows, who gave her a sneak peak into the basics of running a show. “My love for the industry rekindled with every show” she explains.

After moving to the Fiji Islands for four months, Ali returned back to Columbus to find that her previous mentor had relocated, but left behind a new set of mentors that would be just what the young songstress, musician, and composer would need to pursue her passion.

By Nadine Haralson The Courier

There’s a new music talent in town and her name is Alia Torres. Born in Baden-Wurttemberg Heidelberg, Germany. Alia, who grew up an Army brat, moved to Columbus, Georgia with her family completing her last two years and graduating from North Side High school. She furthered her education at Columbus State University. Torres first fell in love with the art of music as a child. She shares how her father who was at the time in the military would record music in the basement with his friends in Germany. “I was always intrigued, and loved to hear him play the piano”, recalls Torres.

She began playing the violin at the age fourteen, from there she moved onto other instruments like the piano, guitar and the banjo, receiving the Governor’s Honor while attending high school. It wasn’t until she began working at The Loft, however, would her deep seeded joy for music begin to blos-

In 2014Torres began shadowing Matthew McCabe, a close friend and Professor of Audio Technology at CSU and Steve Thompson. Eventually becoming a Live Music Engineer and Production Assistant for “The Loft Live on Broadway" and the studio Assistant for Columbus State University.

From there the Tri-City area has been able to experience the unique soulful and sultry vocals of Ms. Torres with a mix of originals and covers that include songs by Ma Rainey. If you can’t find the songstress performing at The Loft, she’s either performing Led Zeppelin tributes at CSU or teaming up with other local bands.

“My mother and father always raised my siblings and I to be self-sufficient and to follow our hearts, shares Alia, “with a militaristic mindset that failure is not an option.”

With future plans of performing more shows and recording an album of originals and covers, Torres hopes to assist with larger shows. I don’t see failure as part of her options either.

Local “Foot Soldier” Receives Congressional Gold Medal Posthumously By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

On February 23, 2016 the “Foot Soldiers” of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNNC) were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for registering Blacks to vote in Mississippi and across the south during the tumultuous 1960s. The bill to honor the civil right veterans was co-sponsored by Congresswomen Terri Sewell, 7th District-Alabama (D). The honor had local ties as Willie C. Little’s, a science teacher and administrator in Alabama and Compton Unified School District received his award posthumously. Little’s is the brother of Dr. Sandra Tyler co-pastor of Lovingkindness Ministries, Inc. with her husband Earnest Tyler.

The award, presented before hundreds of people gathered in Emancipation Hall, honors veterans like Webb as well as people who provided money, support and housing to civil rights workers. Republican and Democratic leaders praised the veterans for the changes their efforts brought about, including the 1965 Voting Rights Act. “The foot soldiers gave of themselves for a great cause,’’ said Sen. Jeff Session, R-Ala. “You changed the hearts of millions of people.”

The award comes weeks before the 51st anniversary of the historic Selma-to-Montgomery march in Alabama across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It also comes as Democrats and civil rights and voting rights groups continue to push Congress to take up legislation that would restore a key provision of the Voting Rights Act thrown out by a 2013 Supreme Court decision.

“While we moved beyond the bridge, the voting rights of Americans are still at risk,” said Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., a

leader of the push to award the congressional medal and an author of voting rights legislation. “There are still modern-day barriers to voting and challenges that weaken the Voting Rights Act of 1965.”

¿Van a combinar cuentas?
