Myers Disconnecting The Dots District 7 Muscogee County School Board member Shannon Smallman should have learned from District 3 School Board member Althavia Senior about the wrath of bully Frank Myers. According to the street committee because Smallman did not support Myers and Thomas in voting no for the SPLOST and agreeing with an outside source paying board members meals she is being berated and vilified by Myers, his “henchboy” and other misguided followers on facebook. According to a recent post by Myers he expresses his dissapointment with her stating; “That’s the thanks I get for getting her elected.” By Any Means Necessary It has been alleged that Frank is telling individuals that he can raise the money to rebuild Spencer without

taxpayers’ money and to repair Claflin School. Although the street committee understands he has denied it, there are those who claim he is using the scare tactic that a vote of yes for the SPLOST means the free or reduced school lunch program will be eliminated. Of course this is utter nonsense but once that’s out there some people will believe it and he knows this. AKA’s Honor Women of Courage The street committee congratulates, Jacquelyn Egins, Vanessa Roberts and Patty Kimbrough Taylor as the 2015 recipients of the Rosa Parks Women of Courage Award. Annually the foundation of Gamma Tau Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. recognizes women in our community from various walks of life. This year the women were representative of the arts.

A VIEW FROM A PEW

Don’t Bock Your Blessing thing I had evacuated with. And every penny we had, $300.00 was in there. Now I don’t so much mind they took the money, it’s just money, but all those important papers. I need those for the kids and their schooling. I don’t even know if I can get new papers with New Orleans being in such a mess.”

As I look back over these past ten years of publishing my column; “A View From A Pew” I realize how blessed I have been. In turn many of you have called, written, emailed or stopped me on the street to say how a particular column or columns have impacted your lives. Throughout the year, as we celebrate this milestone, I will periodically publish those columns that were helpful in my life in hopes that in turn it will again bless you and many others. Here is one that was first published on January 26, 2012.

His company had been toiling and negotiating on an offer for months. It had become the obsession of his office. They finally had a realistic proposal and he was sitting across from his customer. “Thanks, Dave,” he said, “but we’ll have to pass this year.” He was devastated. How could he face his employees? The loss of this million dollar deal would result in lay

offs. His stomach initially tied in knots over presenting the bid, was now wrenched tighter. He simply could not understand how the client could afford to refuse their offer. He dreaded returning to the office. Pulling into a truck stop he ordered coffee before returning to the office. His waitress was friendly, although slightly distracted. As she poured the coffee and he nonchalantly said hello and asked how she was he fully expected the traditional Southern response, “fine…and you?” “Oh, I’ve been better,” she began. “My husband abandoned me and the kids after Katrina. Left us stranded here and this is the only job I could find. It ain’t too bad mind you. The boss lets me work around my kids so they ain’t at home alone. But yesterday someone stole my purse. It had everything in it, birth certificates, shot records, social security cards, every-

He bobbed his head with feigning interest in her conversation. He wanted to interrupt her and point out that she had only lost $300.00. He had just lost millions. Before he could reply, she turned to another table. Sipping the warmth, he thought about their dilemmas. Both of them had been dealt a raw deal, but self-pity made him feel that somehow his loss was greater. Proportionally though, their losses were probably equal. As he drank his coffee he flipped his cell phone and attempted to scan emails. No reception. Shutting it, he sank into the comfort of the red plastic padded dining booth and stared aimlessly. His daze was interpreted by the newly familiar voice. “They found it!” She squealed with delight. “They found my purse! All our important papers were still there. We’re gonna be alright!”

Everyone in the truck stop applauded. She came to refresh his coffee; he declined the offer and congratulated her good fortune. She was gracious and told him to have a nice day as he took his ticket and headed for the cash register. “She’s still out $300.00,” the Holy Spirit whispered. “Okay,” he acknowledged. “I’ll leave a $20.00. That’s a 1000% tip.” “She’s still out $300.00,” came the Voice again. “All right,” he moaned, “I’ve got $50.00 in my wallet. I’ll leave that.” “She lost $300.00,” repeated the Voice. “Look, God,” he began. “I just lost a million dollar deal. Have a little sympathy for me!” “She lost $300.00,” the Voice insisted. “All right, all right,” he grudgingly relented. Taking out his American Express he paid for the coffee and wrote in a $300.00 tip. Walking through the parking lot to his car, he tried his cell phone again, still no tower. He got in his car and headed for the office trying to think of a diplomatic way to break the bad news Opening the door to his office, his secretary practically leapt from her desk to greet him.

“Mr. Smith,” she bubbled, “You’ll never guess who just called!” “Do I have to?” he asked. “Oh no sir, I was just so excited I couldn’t help myself” she beamed. “Mr. Jones called right after you left. He tried getting you on your cell, but he said he couldn’t reach you. Must have been in a dead zone, right sir?” She inhaled and continued at lightening speed, “Anyway he said he went over the figures you gave him with his sales and production staff after your meeting. They decided to double the order. Can you believe it! Doubled the order! Our price was just too good to pass. They have faxed over the signed contracts! Isn’t that fantastic? The contracts are on your desk.” Stunned, he looked at his secretary in utter disbelief, “He said what?” She slowly repeated the telephone conversation. He could not believe it. He walked into the office to examine the faxed contracts for himself. He noted the time on the fax and the American Express receipt. They were the same. The story you have just read is a true one. The names have been changed but the event did occur. It pays to be a blessing to others. Don’t block your blessing for $300.

Selma Marches On Selma. For those of a certain age, the word Selma is evocative of a time when people stood against insurmountable odds. It is an ever-lasting illustration of why the right to vote must never be taken for granted. People of all colors bled and died so that we might exercise that quintessential American right to choose our elected leaders. We must feed this spirit to a new generation so that they might experience the freedom that comes from knowing their history, so they are not doomed to repeat it. I watched the movie Selma through the eyes of my teenager and it hit me that they do not understand who they are because they have not been afforded the luxury of understanding how we got here. Here, meaning a society with Black mayors, senators and even a president. Here, in a society with major cracks in our “post-racial” America. To see a teenager try to make sense of the bombing of four little girls in a Birmingham church is to see innocence and armor in the eyes of a young Black male eager for a post-Trayvon society. Ava Duvernay’s Selma is more than a movie. It is a call to action to reclaim our history in our own words. When I saw it, all I kept thinking was she took the women out of the kitchen and restored them to their pivotal role in history. Today, it seems so obvious that Black women had to be omnipresent in the struggle. I still remember hearing that Dorothy Height always placed herself in the middle of the picture lest she get cropped out later when the picture was printed. Duvernay captured all of this with a subtly so exquisite, one wonders how this story could have been told any other way. Her critics claim that she portrayed Lyndon B. Johnson as George Wallace-light, but of course, if you change the lens, you change the view. PolitiFact, the factchecking site, affirmed that President Obama was correct when he asserted that during LBJ’s first 20 years in Congress, he opposed every civil rights bill that came up for a vote. The fact-checking site quoted Johnson biographer Robert Caro as saying, “He had been a congressman, beginning in 1937, for eleven years, and for eleven years he had voted against every civil rights bill – against not only legislation aimed at ending the poll tax and segregation in the armed services but even against legislation aimed at ending lynching: a one hundred percent record.” Caro added that while running for the U.S. Senate in 1948, Johnson had assailed President Harry Truman’s entire civil rights program as “an effort to set up a police state.” See Keenan Page 10

Apparently, a few lost individuals did not like the fact that I said that if Martin Luther King, Jr. were here today in Columbus he would be challenging Mayor Tomlinson on the issue of a citizens review board with subpoena power, among some others things. Liars, haters, cowards, and hypocrites all run in the same pack. I never lose sleep over what any of that ilk might say about what I write. For whatever reasons these backbiters run to my friends whining, crying and complaining about what I said in my column and who it was said about. Obviously, they would rather tell a friend of mine than to tell me how they feel, as they do know exactly how to contact me if they were of a mind to. These type people would never tell you the real truth about why they hate me. However, you should know that a lot of these haters are the African American friends and supporters of Mayor Teresa Pike Tomlinson. If you happen to be an African American citizen critical of Mayor Tomlinson, then you should expect to be attacked by those terribly misguided African Americans that are totally supportive of this mayor. I pray for those people a lot. I advise friends not to argue with them but to also pray for them as I do. God has to deal with these people. There is a reason why they think the way they do about me and what I say and write. I know that the reason has a lot to do more with what is in their hearts, and always has been. They hate me because they are haters of the truth. They hate me telling you the truth because they are afraid you will rise up, become super vigilant, informed, and involved. They do not want you or me to be independent thinkers or involved. Independent thinkers ask a whole bunch of tough, intelligent questions, which automatically makes them a direct threat to status quo powersthat-be, or want to be in many cases. Teresa Pike Tomlinson is the newest and most popular civil rights and unity leader for the African American community, or she might as well be judging by how things have gone since she was elected to office. The mayor is undoubtedly very popular with establishment African Americans, especially certain preachers and politicians. Only a few African American elected officials, and hardly any recognized African American community leaders, will even dare question, challenge, or disagree with this mayor on anything she says, does, or wants to do. All the others either sit quietly by or are falling all over each other trying to climb on the Teresa Tomlinson bandwagon to prove just how loyal they are to her. Many of you know I am telling the truth about the situation and the people involved in such conduct. We know it is what they do and who they are, but it is still makes you sick to your stomach to see them act the way they do because of the need to be liked and accepted. Everything in Moderation, Even Feminism In celebration of March being Women’s History month, I am dedicating my article this week to the history of the feminist movement and the social impact it has had on America. Feminism is defined as the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. In the 60’s women fought for the right to vote, to work, to own property, to obtain an education, for access to contraceptives, and for laws to protect women from rape, sexual harassment and domestic violence. As a nation we have made tremendous progress in these issues although we still have a long way to go. The current fight of feminists is very different than it was in the 60's. Our positions in 2015 are dramatically different than they were and so are our needs. We don’t need to fight for the right to work anymore; we need to fight for equal pay. We don’t need to fight for the right to vote anymore; we need to fight for political office and for our opinions on politics and justice to hold the same merit as a man’s. We need the abolishment of sexism socially and professionally, we need affordable childcare but most importantly we need the restoration of the institution of marriage and family. Today it seems that we see more career women than wives and I can’t help but wonder if this is a result of the feminist movement? Was this truly the goal of women like Shirley Chisholm? Which brings me to my final question, has anyone ever assessed the impact that women entering the workforce have had on the institutions of family and marriage? The most apparent sign of impact is that you see the roles reversing. As a result of women entering the work force, there are more stay at home dad’s now than ever in American History. More women are losing custody of their children altogether and most surprisingly to me, more women paying child support. For several generations the feminist movement has encouraged women's independence and equal rights, which I agree are very critical. Yet looking at the current state of our communities we must seriously ask ourselves, did we over do it? Like the old saying, anything in excess is bad. Was the feminist movement so pro independence it unintentionally but consequently became anti-mother and anti-wife? Did the successes of the feminist movement create other issues proving counter productive in the overall advancement of women? Was the price for our professional advancement social digression? If proven true however, how many feminists would ever admit that excessively advocating for independence had an adverse impact on marriage and family? Or is this what the collective body of women wanted all along? Based on research done by the Census and Pew Social Trends the percent of women never married has more than doubled since 1960. Simultaneously the number of women working in the US has incSee Ellyse Page 10

Local Attorney Kelli Hooper, Esq. Is “Baby Daddy Best Friend” By Wane A. Hailes The Courier Kelli Byers Hooper has been a champion in advocating for the best interests of the child in her family law practice. Understanding that in many situations, having custody granted to the father is in the child’s best interest, she has zealously advocated for fathers to custody matters. Her relentless representation of responsible fathers in child custody matters has earned her the endearing nickname the "Baby Daddy Best Friend." According to Hooper, however, it didn’t start out that way. “Initially a great deal of our firms practice was spent representing girlfriends or women of professional athletes in child custody and child support cases. When we appeared in court in front of the judge we were well prepared and to be honest with you most, if not all of the men had no clue what was going on until it was too late”. At some point Attorney Hooper had a change of heart. “I began to see more and more responsible dads being taken advantage of and our firm made a conscious decision to “move to the other side”. We no longer represent the women in custody cases instead we now only represent those cases where granting custody to the father is in the best interest of the child. I would never have believed how rewarding it would be. When you have a father come to you who you know is responsible. One who can and is willing to take care of his

children. A man who has been trying for years to spend time with his children and we are finally able to obtain visitation rights for him. There is no greater feeling and they appreciate it as well.” Although both her parents are originally from Columbus Kelli grew up in Atlanta visiting the city in the summer. When looking to expand her practice she decided that Columbus was a growing market and so she began handling cases here commuting for about a year. “I look forward to helping those men who are serious about their children’s welfare” Kelli Byers Hooper, Esq., is a partner with Hooper & Honoré, LLC. Her practice involves representing mothers, fathers and grandparents in family law mat-

ters, as well as representing individuals and their businesses in litigated matters in State and Federal Court. Kelli earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver, a Master’s in Public Health from UCLA, and a JD from Cumberland School of Law. During her second and third years of law school, she served on the board of directors for the Southern Region and National Executive Board of the Black Law Students Association. Kelli is admitted to practice law in Georgia, in all state courts and the Northern District of Georgia. She is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, and The Georgia Association of Trial

Lawyers. In addition, Kelli is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Incorporated and Cascade United Methodist Church, where she serves as a member of the Women's Usher Board. Kelli currently serves as a member of the American Bar Association, Family Law Section Diversity Committee and the American Bar Association, Business Law Section, Nonprofit Organizations Committee. Her law partner, Alcide Honoré, Esq., practice includes counseling established and start-up businesses enterprises, entertainment law and contract negotiation, and representing athletes and entertainers. Alcide earned his Bachelor’s degree in political science at

Duke University and obtained his Master’s in political science and JD and from Georgia State University. During his second and third years of law school, he served on the Southern Region and the National Executive Boards of Directors for the Black Law Students Association. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, in all state courts, and the Northern District of Georgia. No stopping there, he also been known to rub elbows on news media panels ranging from MSNBC contributor Joy Reid to ESPN sports commentator Keith Olberman.

By Nadine Haralson The Courier Having been born in Cleveland, Ohio to military parents, Pariah has traveled and seen much of the world. A world that opened his mind and played a significant part on how he viewed people, history, culture, and civil inequality. A view that played a powerful role in how he would learn and decide to use his voice about and to the world. Poet Pariah is a vocal champion for justice, a freethinker, and at times is known to be a controversial poet having passionately spoken out against violence and injustice. “I want to give words to inspire the action needed to make real and lasting change for the better in the world”, he says. Pariah is an award-winning poet who describes himself as “hard-hitting street gospel told with grit and honesty”. He has been a spokesman for NIKE, featured on PBS, won competitions as far as South Korea, Colorado and in our own Fountain City. Sharing his poetic talents across the globe is not Pariah’s only gift; he shares his time and heart among various nonprofit organizations, outreach and educational groups like The Wounded Warriors project, and The Ronald McDonald House. “My biggest question has always been why are we here,” explains Pariah Poetry, “I hope to get a sense of understanding of that for my self and others thru my work.” A great and positive role is such an understatement that Mayor Teresa Tomlinson on July 24th, 2014 award Poet Pariah is own day.

By Nadine Haralson The Courier Mother, poet, and actress, Grande Beauty’s career and future is on the move like rip currents that’s sure to have you caught amongst the waves if you’re not careful. But then again I believe that’s her mission. Full time poet and artist, Grande is known as a Sultry Poetress because her sound is a blend of spoken word and neo soul with a deep sensual tone. “I first started writing as a child just to release my emotions”, shares Beauty. “It just grew into something bigger than I ever imagined. Now I write to uplift and empower.” It is that same empowerment that helped her win 2013’s Grip Grammy Award for Poet/Spoken Word Artist of the year. Those same emotions have favored her to grace stages with poetry heavy hitters like Georgia Me, Red Storm and Tommy Bottoms. Her writing skills have graced the pages of Atlanta’s based Model Magazine in their “Poetry Corner”. When asked where she obtained the stage name ‘Grande Beauty’ she sim-

Ms. Grande’s size, beauty and attitude has been embraced all across Georgia, having been in stage monologues like “Fat Girl Diaries”, and “Pretty Hurts” written by Learical Jones and the movie production “Plus size Divas” written by Sylvia Wilson. “I’m showing women, teenagers, and little girls you can do whatever you desire, no matter what the size.” A desire and confidence that gave her the opportunity to be the opening act for American Idol’s season 12 winner Candice Glover’s “Fan Appreciation Concert” in Hampton, South Carolina in January. With two albums under her belt “Memoirs of a Sultry” (2013) and her recently released sophomore album, “Evolve” (2015), I don’t believe Grande Beauty will be holding her tongue any time soon “if you have something that you want to say, just SAY IT and say it with POWER” proclaims Grande, “I’m living my dream and letting my words speak volumes.” And we hear you loud and clear. Your Choice Is Simple...You Are Either For Our Kids Or You Are Not! By Wane A. Hailes The Courier There comes a point when the preaching ends and you can only hope the people have heard and will heed your words. For the Courier Eco Latino newspaper that time is now. For weeks we have done our best to educate and inform you on the upcoming SPLOST vote and the real reasons behind why Frank Myers, John Thomas and others are opposed to it, Please be clear, it is not because they care about our kids. By the time our next paper publishes the decision will have been made. I have no doubt that, by now any and everyone who intends to cast their ballot on this important issue on March 17th has already decided how they will do so. For the Courier, we vote YES

For Kids. Our final words are this; as you contemplate where you stand on this issue take a moment and consider how vocal Myers and Thomas have been. Also take in consideration and ask yourself why they are the only two community “leaders” who are opposed to the SPLOST. Everyone from the Chamber of Commerce, and other business leaders understand that for a community to grow taking care of our educational system is key. With that said let me leave you with this quote: “It is a general popular error to suppose the loudest complainers for the public to be the most anxious for its welfare.” For the final time here are the proposed projects and their cost. Talk to you March 18th.

Acclaimed Marketing, Public Relations & Media Specialist, Bunnie Jackson-Ransom, Publishes 2nd Edition of Getting The Word Out: How to Market Your Ministry Atlanta (February 14, 2015). Bunnie Jackson-Ransom, known for her unique combination of marketing proficiency, public relations skills, and media coaching capability, published a book in 2010 offering ministry leaders, pastors and nonprofit organizations access to her knowledge, professional abilities and more than thirtyfive years of experience through her book entitled “Getting The Word Out: How to Market Your Ministry.” The book, which quickly became a must-have addition to the libraries of many of the regions ministers and church leaders, sold out.

Rather than re-print, JacksonRansom included four new chapters to the book and has just introduced “Getting The Word Out: How to Market Your Ministry – SECOND EDTION.” Adding an additional 100 pages to the book, the second edition includes chapters on social media, how to measure what you market, how to build your communication committee, and crisis management when it is being played out in the media. The manuscript was created from years of experience, honing skills and techniques gained

from working within corporate America, assisting non-profit organizations, and working with the individual business owner to successfully get traction from the media, promote products and/service, and to create and maintain a successful brand. The 2nd edition was created to provide insights into potential ways to spread the gospel of deliverance and evangelism in the 21st century. This is a virtual hands-on guide showing how marketing principles can successfully be applied to the affairs of the church. The original manuscript was published through The Interdenominational Theological Center (The ITC) and endorsed by Dr. Michael Battle, former president of The ITC and the U. S. Representative to the African Union, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The book has also been endorsed by some of the most prolific and respected theologians and pastors including Dr. Teresa Hairston founder Gospel Today Magazine and the Gospel Heritage Conferences; Reverend Dr. R. L. White, senior pastor at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church (Atlanta, GA) and president of the Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP; Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough, former senior pastor at Cascade United Methodist Church (Atlanta, GA); Presiding Bishop William DeVeaux of the Second District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; Reverend Dr. Marvin A. Moss, senior pastor, Salem United Methodist Church (New York City); Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of the King Center (Atlanta, GA), Reverend Benjamin F. Morrow Jr., pastor at Jeffries Cross Baptist Church (Burlington, NC); R e v e r e n d D r. C a m e r o n Alexander, senior pastor at Antioch North Baptist Church (Atlanta, GA); Reverend Dr. Otis Moss Jr., pastor emeritus, Olivet

Institutional Baptist C h u r c h (Cleveland, Ohio); Bishop Dale Bronner, senior pastor at Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral (Austell, GA); Bishop Andy C. Lewter of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship (Amityville, NY); and Reverend Dr. William A. Flippin, senior pastor at Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church (DeKalb Co, GA). These individuals have made some significant and noteworthy statements about the value of the book and what it might add to resources and information available to church leadership. Getting the Word Out: How to Market Your Ministry is a stepby-step instructional publication that provides practical advice on communicating to the membership within the structure of the church. It is also a tool for evangelism that offers upto-date techniques to help “get the word out” to the broader community and enhance the image of the church and its ministries in order to grow and maintain church membership. “Throughout my travels, I listen to discussions about the state of today’s church,” says Jackson-Ransom. “Throughout all denominations there appears to be a divide between young and not-so-young dealing with how these two generations prefer to worship, respond to practices of evangelism, and – most of all – how they use and receive technology in their daily lives. Getting the word out and into today’s market place to build ministries and ultimately

wins souls for God is a constant and evolving challenge. But a challenge to which we must find a solution. Many church leaders have told me that this book offers tools and techniques which, when used in a cohesive plan with the word of God and a committed church, deserve serious consideration,” Jackson-Ransom added. PAGE 10 Keenan From Page 4 It was only in the aftermath of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination that Johnson, picking up the torch of the slain president, rose above his past. He deserves credit for that, but he did not, as some of his supporters claim, come up with the idea of the Selmato-Montgomery March. Let’s celebrate Black history and not let others revise it. February is the “season of blackness,” a time when the nation lifts up our inextricable role in American history. This is fine and well, but every day we need to remember and heed the lessons of Selma. We have a Voting Rights Act that is broken. Some of us can vote easily, some of us face challenges no less daunting than poll taxes, and others have been stripped of their right to vote or even worse coerced into believing that our vote does not matter. At the heart of the American dream, whether it is educational or economic opportunity, equal justice, or net equality, is the right to vote. Until the right to vote is automatic, permanent, portable and convenient to every adult citizen, then none of us will truly be free. We

Ellyse From Page 4 reased from 14% in 1960 to over 43% to date. So while more women are working, receiving their own income and becoming more independent, less unions are being formed causing the institution of family to diminish. These statistics are clearly cause and effect. In the mid 70’s there were 900,000 reported children being cared for by registered childcare facilities. By 1990 that number grew to 3.8 million. These stats prove the majority of the nation is depending on child development centers to help raise their children. Yet let's face it, there are some things our children will never learn from daycare. For example, children learned the morals and values

have the technology, we have capacity, we need the will. I understand why the Oscars overlooked Ava Duvernay. She is not a director from a sexy foreign country, or a darling of the one-dimensional Oscar set. She is a woman, who like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., decided to stir the pot in a world where voting rights have been unnecessarily curtailed, and unexplained murders and urban unrest is on the rise. Maybe her real reward is telling our story, raw and uncut in a world that sees Black images predominately through the lens of non-Black eyes. She is a reminder that we must tell our own stories, in our own words so that we can be reminded that history has a way of repeating itself when people forget. It does not mean others cannot tell our stories, it just means that our voice must be soar above the mix. Selma must march on. Kim M. Keenan is the President and CEO of the Multicultural Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC). Prior to taking the helm at MMTC, Keenan served as General Counsel and Secretary of the NAACP. She is a past president of the National Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar.

that once defined our rich American culture in the home which by the number of teenage pregnancies, suicides and homicides that clearly isn't happening anymore. Behavior issues and diagnoses of childhood ADHD are consistently increasing, right along with the number of women entering the workforce. It may be coming off as though I am an antifeminist or holding women solely responsible for all familial issues and that isn't my intention. Marriage and family take the cooperation of both men and women alike; however, I raised these points in attempt to understand the impact that women entering the workforce has had. When you look at the numbers it's obvious, women entering the workforce has had

Love From Page 4 is one thing, being willing to turn your back when she makes decisions that will put the lives of certain citizens at risk is quite something else altogether. I myself, along with my friend Ron Jones, supported Teresa Pike Tomlinson when she was a candidate for the office of mayor. She seemed to be a very good person. I knew she was smart enough and indeed tough enough to do the job. I believed she was more than qualified to be the first female mayor of our city. What Ron Jones and I expected from Teresa Pike Tomlinson, if and when she became mayor, was for her to treat every citizen with due respect and to be fair and just across the board. You must understand, however, that Teresa Tomlinson came to us. We did not go running and begging to Teresa Tomlinson to run for mayor against Zeph Baker. She came to the Grassroots Unity Movement for Change the same as other political candidates came to us for our help and support. After talking with her and then with each other, Ron Jones and I both agreed without hesitation, reservation, or equivocation to vote for and support Teresa Pike Tomlinson for mayor. Nevertheless, the Teresa Pike Tomlinson I came to know is not at all about fairness or justice, at least it seems when it comes to certain citizens. What she is about is power and control. Whatever it takes to get whatever she wants is what she is going to do, right or wrong. If you are not going to agree with her, then you might as well not talk with her. The more Teresa Tomlinson dealt with leaders in the African American community, the more she realized she had absolutea severe social impact directly effecting the institutions of marriage and family. Feminists always talk about the positive impacts but seldom of the negative. Personally, I am a very career driven woman but I

ly nothing at all to worry about. She quickly recognized that the Columbus, Georgia African American community was weak, gullible, divided, and easily manipulated. I know there are many of you born and raised here that take offense at me saying that the African American community was weak, gullible, and easily manipulated, but it is true. To be sure, the ones that take the most offense at my comments are typically those that simply do not know what is really going on in this city regarding the class politics being played, or they are the ones getting manifold benefits from the status quo system at the expense of the rest of us not in the clique. It is the African American community that needs to wake up in this city. It is the masses of African American people that need to understand how bad they are being played, and just how much African American socalled leaders are selling them out day-in and day-out. It is the people sitting in the pews of the church that need to wake up. Much of the African American establishment does not care about how bad the mayor mistreats any of the rest of us. Their only concern is for themselves and the relationship they think they have with this mayor. They could not care less about any type justice for you and me. It simple does not matter if you are an innocent African American citizen abused by the police or a 13-year old falsely arrested by police. The mayor is not going to properly address the issue because she knows African American so-called leaders, including a lot of the wellknown clergy, will not say a mumble a word of protest publicly or privately against her or the police department. However, African American pastors and think that it is time as women that we take responsibility for our children and our families. We have obtained the right to work and be independent, but just as much as we deserve to receive

political figures will publicly support the mayor’s issues. It is just plain pathetic. Over the years it has become so easy for the mayor she can even buy off some African Americans by simply appointing them to a board, or by throwing a big event, or by simply attending an African American church service. Be that as it may, it is not because Teresa Tomlinson is that good at running game on African Americans. It is that we as citizens are just that weak. Regrettably, some African Americans are actually working for this city to grow while the rest of us die. We are clearly a people complicit in our own future demise, and either do not understand it or do not care. Nonetheless, I truly believe with the help of Almighty God we can do better because we are much better and much stronger than the weaknesses we have presented for others to recognize and exploit. We need to get deeper into the Word and strengthen our faith in God so that our eyes enough to see the Light of Truth to be free. I am going to keep pointing you to Almighty God, like it or not. None of us have to lose our souls going along with wrong or looking the other way when wrong is being done to hurt any citizens of Columbus, Georgia, be they Black, White, Brown, or whatever. Satan’s helpers can prop up wrongdoers and apologize for the wrong done to others in this city all they want to, but God never falls asleep on the job. My God is the God of Justice. He is still in charge whether you believe in Him and serve Him only or not. God is God and always will be God. Inevitably, we all will have to answer to God.

equal pay; our families deserve the same amount of attention as our careers. If we fail to correct our positions in the institutions of marriage and family I fear our youth will continue to suffer.

D30 ENT - THE INSIDER

the hip hop scene THE TEA! I am NOT my hair: Zendaya Coleman Vs. Giuliana Rancic Hollywood stars are critiqued on everything from how they look, eat, speak, smell, and walk everyday, but during award season they’re under a tight microscope. They pull out all the stops to make sure that they are represent-

ing themselves, and their brand the best way that they know how. It was no different for actress and singer Zendaya Coleman. She walked the red carpet of this years Oscars rocking faux locs and was drug through the mud with an offensive racial stereotype by E correspondent Giuliana Rancic during an episode of “Fashion Police.” “She looks like she smells of patchouli oil or weed” was the offensive statement made by Rancic that had social media in an uproar this weekend. The statement even upset Coleman that she posted a lengthy statement on her instagram to explain how offended she was. “It’s a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful, she says. To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive.” Since the comment was made celebrities from India Aire, Monica, Kelly Osbourne (Rancic’s co-star), and Whoopi Goldberg have come to Zendaya’s rescue to show support for her. “Here’s what’s offensive to me,” Whoopi Goldberg said. “I’ve had dreads for 40 years and never have I smelled like patchouli. It’s a stereotype that she put on.” Needless to say, Rancic has since issued an apology for her careless com-

ment to Zendaya and anyone who else wears dread locs. This should teach Giuliana that there is a fine line between what she thinks is funny and what actually is. Keyshia Cole returns to Reality TV Trust and Believe Keyshia is back! The singer Keyshia Cole has returned to our television sets on BET Tuesday for a new reality show with her, her family, and their dysfunction. This season of “Keyshia Cole: I’m All In,” will show Keyshia’s issues within her marriage with her husband Daniel “Boobie” Gibson, her mother Frankie and her beef with her sister Neffe. From just the first episode, its safe to say that this season is going to be a tearjerker. There is a lot of crying over the same family issues that we’ve seen before. No family is perfect, but there seems to not have been any progression from the previous seasons. Why give the public the same drama and hatred we’ve seen before? In an honest opinion it is quite depressing and dreadful and only one episode has aired. There has been backlash coming from all sides of Keyshia’s family. Her adoptive family is upset, because we will not see much of them. They’ve made it very public under Keyshia’s instagram comments. Hopefully things pick up and we will all be able to see what’s the point of this show. It airs every Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. on BET. Will you be watching? Real Chance of Love We all remember watching “I Love New York,” and “Real Chance of Love” on VH1 when reality TV was the hottest thing out. It was entertaining, funny, and eventful to watch the brothers SEE Love Page 17

“Act Like a Lady and Think Like a Boss” “Ladies Taking The Lead” put on their second event of the year this past Sunday with another empowering seminar for their members. “Act Like A Lady and Think Like A Boss,” was held at the Gallery at Fountain Park and filled with ambition and pride as soon as one walked into the room. Ahkelia Copeland, Kirsten King, and Felicia L. Hamilton put together this event to motivate any woman who needed to be pushed just a little harder towards their entrepreneurial goals. Hamilton was the workshop leader and gave the women honesty, power, and respect, by revealing a lot of her trials and tribulations on her quest to become the successful businesswoman that she is today. The many points of the free 3-hour seminar talked about everything from “being the CEO of your life to no one has to believe but you.” It was not all business talk at the seminar, it was a sister circle of support, a family, and bond that could be felt in the room. Hamilton stressed the importance of the women who were not married in room to make sure that “ the people that you surround yourselves with from personal relationships, to friends, to family, must fit into your business plan, avoid chaos.” If one thing is for certain, the women of “Ladies Taking The Lead” humbly care and give the real deal. The walk into entrepreneurship is not an easy one, but be ambitious, determined, and have faith that it will all manifest with a belief.

Precio: Desde US$ 21,596 Consumo: 21 mpg ciudad / 28 mpg carretera
