A VIEW FROM A PEW So You Think Your Cross Is Too Heavy To Bear? replied that his life was full of turmoil and that it had become too much to bear. He again asked for help stating that he just couldn't continue to go on.

little cross way back in the corner. It was the smallest cross in the room. After a bit of thought, he pointed to the cross and said, "That one, Lord. I want that one." Jesus asked, "Are you sure, my son?"

Jesus, feeling the man's anguish, decided help was in order. The man was so happy that his prayers were about to be answered that his burden already felt lighter. Jesus took the man to a room and stopped in front of the door. When he opened the door, what the man saw was amazing. The room was filled with crosses; little crosses, big crosses, giant crosses.

The man quickly replied, "Oh, yes Lord. Most definitely, yes."

The man, bewildered, looked at Jesus and asked how this would help him.

A troubled and burdened man prayed and prayed that God would lift his burden. Day after day he prayed that his life would be easier and he begged for God's intervention. One day, Jesus came to the

Jesus turned to the man and replied, "My child, you have chosen your own cross. It is the burden you already carry." This story is a daily reminder to me that when my life seems overwhelming all I need do is look around and see what others are coping with. When I start to complain about my feet hurting; I think of the soldier who has lost his feet. When I am tired and don’t feel like going to work; I think of the millions of people who can’t find a job. When my car breaks down and I start complaining; I think about all the people, young and old waiting at the bus stop who wish they had their own transportation. When I start to complain about how my mother gets on my nerves sometimes; I think of all the children who wish their mothers were here with them today. I don’t know about you, but when I stop and look at my life compared to others around me, I can’t help but thank him for his grace and mercy. I will gladly stick with the Cross I got!

Opinion/Editorial By Jazelle Hunt NNPA Correspondent

By Brother Love Special To The Courier Man - Up And Step - Up Verify then trust certainly applies to Mayor Teresa Pike Tomlinson. She apparently does not give the citizens credit for being intelligent enough to read and comprehend, or even think at all for that matter. Trust should be the very last thing on your list if you are dealing the mayor. Do not ever forget who we are talking about here. This mayor, out of her vindictiveness and poor leadership, wanted to cut eight (8) deputies from the Sheriff's Office and six (6) deputies from the Marshal Office in the 2016 budget. We have lost twice a week garbage pickup under this mayor, and she wants to end the Property Tax Freeze for future homebuyers, meaning our children and grandchildren. If you continue to follow this mayor this city will end up in a big mess and the mayor will more than likely blame Columbus City Council, especially when she leaves office. You have to fact-check everything this mayor says, or whatever she dupes Columbus Council into telling us. Here is Section 8-105: Sec. 8-105. - Budgets of County Officers and agencies. All elective officers such as the sheriff, tax commissioner, Judge of Probate Court, coroner and other elective officers, and all agencies not under the direct control and jurisdiction of the Council such as the board of health and board of family and children services, which receive appropriations from the Council, shall prior to the commencement of each fiscal year prepare and submit to the City Manager annual operating and capital budget requests for the ensuing fiscal year. Such budget requests shall be incorporated into the overall consolidated government budget for submission by the Mayor to the Council. The Council shall grant a hearing to any such officer or agency on such proposed budgets. Section 8-105 of the Charter makes it clear that "elective officers" are not under the direct control and jurisdiction of the Council. Furthermore, the Charter distinguishes between appointive offi-

cers and elective officers, which is exactly what the four (4) elected officials who filed the current lawsuits have been saying all along. These elected officials are not saying council should give them any outrageous thing they can come up with in their annual budget requests. They are simply saying that their budget requests should go forward the same as the mayor's does for consideration by city council. The mayor knows what she needs to run her office as an elected official. Why would any of the other elected officials in the CCG be any different? Columbus City Council will still decide who gets what. As stated, the problem is our mayor and certain council members are determined to treat elected officials as if they are appointed officials that work for the Columbus Consolidated Government, which they do not. All elected officials serve at the pleasure of the people. The people vote these officers in office and we vote them out of office at the polls on Election Day. The mayor and Council can terminate any appointed department manager they have a mind to at any time for whatever they feel is good reason, but elected officials are a totally different story. With elected officials citizen voters have the say regarding who goes and who stays in office. Mayor Tomlinson keeps on talking and talking and talking. In fact, if you notice, she does all the talking. She has used language regarding a county police force that appeared absolutely nowhere in the state law she cited. She fires at the sheriff in the news media. She fires at the marshal in the news media. She tried to punish both sheriff and marshal in the 2016 fiscal year budget. She tells us over and over about how the city is winning defending against the lawsuits, but not one of the lawsuits have been dismissed. The law firm representing the city is paid by our taxpayer dollars. The attorneys assigned to the case by the firm told us in the beginning that the lawsuits were frivolous. Several hundred thousand dollars later those lawsuits the attorneys claimed were frivolous are

Ferguson – One Year Later It’s been one year since the murder of Michael Brown galvanized the Ferguson, Mo. community and forced the nation to face the horrors of police violence. And as the activist slogan asserts, the ensuing protests have become a movement, not just a moment. “One of the most powerful things about the movement is how it started. It started with people coming out of their homes in mourning, and their state being aggressive. And those people…made a decision to stand up in the face of state terror, and not go home,” said DeRay McKesson, a wellknown Ferguson protester and organizer, whose website WeTheProtesters.org has served as a hub for Fergusonrelated information. “And then more people joined, and more people joined, and it became a living movement without needing a committee to start it, without one charismatic leader to start it. The people started it. That is the enduring strength of the movement.” On August 9, 2014, Cheeraz Gormon was in her hometown of St. Louis, just south of Ferguson, when people began texting her about the shooting. “My baby brother was murdered on August 13, 2013. So right before the one-year anniversary of his transition, I’m getting all these text messages looking at Michael Brown laying on the ground all night,” she said. Her brother was 27, and was killed in the crossfire of a friend’s domestic violence troubles. “I was already grieving, but basically this needed to be done. We needed to be out in the streets, we needed to organize. So my grieving actually got put on hold.” The artist, activist, and award-winning writer took to the streets, like hundreds of other ordinary people in the Ferguson area. They first gathered that evening at the site where Brown’s blood still congealed on the asphalt. The following nights brought tear-gas and rubber-bullet police assaults on protesters,

33 arrests for looting, and the torching of a QuikTrip gas station at the protests’ ground zero. The following week brought curfews, more military-like responses, media crackdowns, and mass arrests. Successive nights of protest followed days of community cleanups and service. The first day of school in the Ferguson-Florissant district was delayed a week. A grand jury failed to indict Wilson, and the National Guard was called in even before the announcement. The movement went national, with shutdowns of major roadways, commercial boycotts, activist disruptions of White communities, community service efforts, and celebrity benefit concerts across major cities. It went international with trip to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to charge the U.S. government with human rights violations for police violence and the militarized response in Ferguson. Gormon was on that trip as part of the Ferguson to Geneva delegation, along with Brown’s parents and a team of human rights lawyers and activists of color. “It was surreal…to see that the [United Nations Committee] delegates were actually saying Michael Brown’s name, and recognizing his parents being in the room. But the United States government [representatives] didn’t mention his name, didn’t mention his parents, none of that,” Gormon said. “The part that was jolting was to see how our government could lie. The lack of accountability is telling, and you could see why we’re in the predicament we’re in.” Today, the Ferguson movement has changed the way the nation talks about police violence and the system that enables it. Samuel Sinyangwe and his knack for statistics are helping fuel this change. His first creation, MappingPoliceViolence.org, is a crowd-sourced database of all reported police killings since 2013. Nadine Haralson..Let Me Be Black Ignorance is not bliss okay, there are no slaves on the cotton field, reading is legal and pronouncing each letter and word correctly will not get you hung. And why is it that, whatever is naturally ours, meaning ‘something that happens or exists by itself without being controlled or changed’, just can’t be, without others thinking it’s okay to make it their’s.

One thing I’m tired of is having to always feel like being black is not something that I can be or do for free, (like breathing), without always having to explain or justify, get permission, feel guilty about, have to make someone, particularly other folks comfortable with. Like there’s some kind of black credit approval process that I need to be approved for. It’s just ridiculous, either you aren’t black enough for the blacks, who I personally feel don’t even know about their own selves well enough as a “colored” person, to try to check

me on my melanin or too black for white folks. With all the chaos going on in the world, where do I even start? It’s, you want me here or you don’t, you like me, but… you can be you, but can you take a little bit of you out of you, and equality for everyone with the acceptation of…. First, yes, I am a black women (yeah, roar, applause), and yes I speak perfect English, (minus a few aint’s and finna’s). Where, however, do black people get off thinking it’s okay to tell me I sound like a white girl?

For example, the new tutorial in Allure Magazine for white women on how to achieve an Afro. An Afro, really? Okay, so it’s not appropriate for the black woman to wear an afro or natural hair styles in some professional settings because it makes people uncomfortable, or it’s to black but when a white lady wears it it’s high fashion and edgy. Bye Felicia, better yet, bye Becky! Not that I have a problem with any race sporting an Afro, cause my people will always do it better, NATUARLLY! It’s just praise and approval should not just be when a white person does it, last. Why can’t what’s mine be mine? #BLACKLIVESMATTER, All lives matter! How utterly disrespectful is it when a race of humans are expressing an outcry against themselves and

their people, who have been oppressed, murdered and misrepresented for generations, to be told that black voices are not important unless the white voices are part of it. That black death is irrelevant, unless we talk about white death also. I mean obviously, we can’t escape white, it’s everywhere. It’s like back in the day when a white person would die, and they would murder 100 blacks for it. But that didn’t matter because one white person was dead. Today police are the new field overseers, and the jail cells are the new hanging trees. I mean I could literally go on for days, about Rachel Dolezal the black face character, how I’m offended by the American Flag more than I am about the Confederate Flag. How I hate the fact that some blacks don’t feel comfortable doing things that represent their true selves, because they’re worried how white society would feel. So in essence they change their ideas and projects to accommodate them. I’m tired of hearing things like; “yall have your own colleges and churches”. As if 3 out of a million levels the playing field. How I always have to explain to some white person my feelings on black issues. “Because I don’t like something”, is that not good enough an answer for you? Or

do I have to be granted authority to have black feelings? This is my favorite; “everyone should be able to, why can’t we all, why do you guys always have to make it a race issue”. Because we so said, it’s called Karma, and we want it NOW!! The problem here is we as black/African Americans are always justifying and seeking an imaginary approval, when really, is it needed? Some will say they don’t. I feel most of us either do or have. It’s like a second nature type thing that happens unconsciously. I just want to be what I am, BLACK, without everyone getting in my black business, disapproving and having issues about it, while I suffer the consequences for it. So I decided it’s not going to happen anymore, my black doesn’t need a definition. From now on it speaks for itself. My issues don’t need to be described, they’ve been here for 500 years, even Stevie Wonder can see them. Starting today I will no longer bother to explain if one can’t comprehend what they have set into place to privilege themselves. And if you honestly need me to help make it clear, we have serious problems, and my plans to help my people will not be run thru you first.

PAGE 14 Love From Page 4 still holding up in court, and the city's legal fees are probably a whole lot closer to a million dollars by now or over that point. None of this seems to be looking good for Mayor Tomlinson, but the law firm, for obvious reasons, is no doubt very appreciative that Columbus City Council is allowing the mayor to run the show. What we have is a mayor hellbent on proving a point. It should be perfectly clear to most of you by now that Mayor Tomlinson will run this city into the ground and destroy the Reserve Fund trying to prove that she is right when she is wrong. She does not want to reach a fair and equitable Hunt From Page 4 oration with We The Protestors, it also includes police homicide data by state and city; the races, identities, and death circumstances of each victim (starting in 2014); and national trends over time with monthly breakdowns. “I think [data] changes people’s perspective. When we first launched Mapping Police Violence, it really made it clear that Ferguson is everywhere…. Very visually, we’re able to show that this is happening all over the country, it’s happening on

agreement with these elected officials. She is not going near any table of negotiation, especially as long as council is allowing her to have her way calling the shots to the attorneys. The mayor is telling our council members just what she wants them to know and the councilors are trusting every word she says because she is an attorney, which the mayor also being an attorney is the very reason why the councilors should not accept every word she says regarding legal matters. She is too close and has an all too real bias. In others words, they are not looking out for the best interest of the Columbus Consolidated Government and the taxpaying citizens of Columbus, Georgia. Why so?

of the powers that be. O v e r t h e p a s t y e a r, Sinyangwe and a team of volunteers have launched other sites. CheckThePolice.org is a still-developing registry of police union contracts, in effort to examine how police departments investigate themselves and hold their officers accountable. There’s also ProtesterProgress.org, which details the movement’s gains and victories, in terms of public opinion polls, legislation, and other wins.

a scale that a lot of people didn’t believe,” he said.

And there certainly have been victories.

Sinyangwe said while storytelling is helpful in appealing to people’s conscience, data will be a key to institutional change.

Sinyangwe, McKesson, and Gormon all say that people are much more politically engaged and aware, both in the St. Louis area and across the nation.

“People in positions of power and influence are more receptive to data than stories. In their positions they hear all kinds of stories from all kinds of people, and they have to sift through what the trends are in order to set policy,” he said, adding that data coupled with activism is a “language” that gets the attention

“There’s a new political community,” McKesson said. “People came together…a new community was born, with all the joy and drama of a family. That is a seemingly simple thing, but powerful.” In Ferguson and other places, voter turnout and informed

Because a number of our councilors themselves are caught up into having power and control over elected officials, which, as I have mentioned throughout, you especially notice it when it comes to the Muscogee County Marshal's Office. The ulterior motive behind certain councilor trying to weaken the Marshal's Office and turn public opinion against Marshal Greg Countryman is for political reasons they need Chief Ricky Boren to have no doubt whatsoever that they support the Columbus Police Department over the Sheriff's Office and the Marshal's Office, and, I say again, especially the Marshal's Office. I do not think that I am telling a lot of you anything you do not know or have not suspected all

along. You are not blind and you are not crazy. If it was just about the Marshal's Office issuing traffic citations, then the mayor and those same councilors would be in likewise uproar about the Sheriff's Office issuing traffic citations, but they are not.

civic participation is up. The Justice Department has issued two reports on the area’s systematic racism, discrimination, and civil rights violations. And several states have passed laws addressing police conduct and accountability.

lot,” Gormon said. “The trauma has not stopped. It’s weird how it just feels like one long day.”

But much has remained the same. McKesson said the Ferguson Police Department has gotten worse. Gormon adds that most of the officials involved in allowing Darren Wilson to evade justice are still in place. And although police killings have declined since the movement began, police have killed 320 Black people over the past year; of the unarmed Black people killed in 2014, six were younger than 18 years old. Over the weekend, many cities remembered Michael Brown with ceremonies, rallies, activism, religious services, and community service. “A year isn’t enough time – we’re still in the throes of it. With everything that we’re dealing with…all the Black people that have died in police custody, recently – it’s just a

As far as leadership, the mayor and council are fast asleep at the wheel while the city is headed off a cliff. We the people had better wake up and do something about it fast ourselves. Despite what the mayor wants us to believe, these lawsuits are not going well for the city. As you all probably know by now, the Supreme Court of Georgia by unanimous vote dismissed the city's appeal of the lower court's rulings in the lawsuits filed

Those on the ground have an eye toward the future. Sinyangwe wants to create a database that analyzes police departments’ policies and procedures against their homicide rates to see what the best department policies are in preventing police violence. “And developing a misconduct database of police officers would be huge, because again with these union contracts, a lot of times the records are expunged after a certain time,” he added. “A lot of these officers have committed the same sorts of brutality in the past, but they’re not being held accountable for that [and] they’re being rehired.” McKesson believes that the next step is figuring out how to use

against the city and leaders in the CCG by Sheriff John Darr and Superior Court Clerk Linda Pierce. The costly gamble in appeal failed and the cases will go forward. Be sure that a lot more of our taxpayer dollars are going to be spent out in legal fees, as if there is not sensible solution to all of this, and the city will still probably lose all three (3) lawsuits filed by the four (4) elected officials. The taxpaying citizens will be able to thank Mayor Teresa Pike Tomlinson for that waste of our tax dollars paid out in legal fees. However, it is the 10-member city council citizens should really blame because they control the purse strings. The Columbus City Council needs to man-up, step-up, and show some leadership.

new tools and collective voice to end police violence. “We are all close to trauma in Blackness – in many ways we’re all on the frontline,” he said, giving thanks for his friends and stating that all Black people should practice self-care, regardless of their level of activism. “I believe that we will win. I don’t know what that looks like. I want to believe that the police may look back, and might reflect on their role, but I have no indication that that will happen. I am tired, but not weary. The same spirit that began this movement in August and sustains it is the same spirit that I know will be pivotal to us.”

We Are Our Brothers Keeper

After 20 years of community service, a local business owner and community pillar, Harold "Lefty" Encarnacion, has been forced to close his grocery store due to serious health complications. His store, Millie's International Market, located in Columbus, GA, which served the needs of the vibrant Latino and Caribbean community of Columbus, is recognized by many as the backbone of the community. Lefty and his wife, Millie, have also served the community through cultural organizations, such as the Tri-City Latino Festival, and many people have been personally blessed by their generosity. While the store will certainly be missed by the residents of Columbus, people have expressed

a more pressing concern for Lefty's well-being. Unfortunately, worried customers and friends have found no comfort in the news of Lefty's worsening condition, and many people are deeply disturbed by the accounts of the pain and suffering of someone who has given so much to everyone in the community. Recently, Lefty has been told by his doctors that he is in need of a liver transplant. This is an extremely expensive procedure, and is an unrealistic cost, especially coupled with personal financial difficulties. We are, therefore, reaching out to the community to help ameliorate his current economic situation, and help fund this life-saving procedure. Lefty has given so much to the community, and we are hoping that those who can give will reciprocate, and help him, just as he would have aided anyone else in need. We know that this is a large goal, but we believe in the strength and kindness of our community. Even if you can only afford to give a little, a small donation given by many people can make a huge difference--possibly the difference between life and death. Thank you!--------Yolanda Encarnacion
