ciate and recognize that without my parents, I would not be who I am today . By helping my father I now realize how difficult and hard it is to do something on my own. I have come to appreciate the importance and the value in helping the family.”
The director said, "This is what I look for in my people. I want to hire someone who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the hardship of others to do things, and a person who does not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired”
A child that has been coddled, protected and usually given what he wants, develops an entitled mentality of "I have the right' and will always put himself first, ignoring the efforts of their parents. If we are this type of protective parent are we really showing love or are we destroying our children? No matter the great things achieved, we must not forget the hard work our parents and grandparents achieved so we could be so successful. I am thankful for my father and grandparents who worked hard to give me a better life and showed me how to work for what I have achieved in my life. The words below are not my own but there is a great lesson to be learned from them.
“A young man went to seek an important position at a large printing company. He passed the initial interview and was going to meet the director for the final interview.
The director saw his resume, it was excellent, and he asked,
“Have you received a scholarship for school?” The boy replied, " No '.
“It was your father who paid for your studies?” “Yes,” he replied.
“Where does your father work?” “My father is a Blacksmith”
The Director asked the young man to show him his hands. The young man showed a pair of hands soft and perfect.
“Have you ever helped your parents at their job?”
“Never, my parents always wanted me not to help but wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, my father can do the job better than me.”
The director said: “I have got a request: When you go home today, go and wash the hands of your father and then come
see me tomorrow morning.” The young man felt his chance to get the job was high.
When he returned to his house he asked his father if he would allow him to wash his hands.
His father felt strange, happy, but with mixed feelings and showed his hands to his son. The young man washed his hands, little by little. It was the first time that he noticed his father's hands were wrinkled and they had so many scars. Some bruises were so painful that his skin shuddered when he touched them.
This was the first time that the young man recognized what it meant for this pair of hands to work every day to be able to pay for his study. The bruises on the hands were the price that he paid for his education,
his school activities and his future.
After cleaning his father's hands the young man stood in silence and began to tidy and clean up the workshop. That night, father and son talked for a long time. The next morning, the young man went to the office of the director.
The Director noticed the tears in the eyes of the young man when He asked him: “Can you tell me what you did and what you learned yesterday at your house?” The boy replied: “I washed my father's hands and when I finished I stayed and cleaned his workshop.” “Now I know what it is to appre-
You can give your child a big house, good food, computer classes, even a large screen TV, but when you're washing the floor or painting a wall, please let him experience that too. After eating have them wash the dishes with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you have no money to hire someone to do this it's because you want to love them the right way. No matter how rich you are, you want them to understand. One day your hair will have gray hair, like the father of this young man. The most important thing is that your child learns to appreciate the effort and to experience the difficulties and learn the ability to work with others to get things done.

Dear Classic Fans:
The 2018 Fountain City Classic is more than just a football game. It is a gathering of proud graduates and supporters of two great historical black institutions. It’s a gathering of future leaders of America. It’s a gathering of fierce rivalries; yet it’s a gathering of friends.
As we gather today as graduates and supporters of Fort Valley State University and Albany State University, we must never forget from which we’ve come. Were it not for black historical institutions, most of us would not be where we are today in our fields of endeavor. In supporting the “Mighty” 29th Annual Fountain City Classic, you are saying “thanks” to both institutions by giving something back. We appreciate your much needed support, for without you, the classic would not be possible. I have had the rewarding and exciting task of serving as Chairman of the Fountain City Classic, Inc. for 29 years. For the past seven months, a small cadre of volunteers has worked untiringly to make this week a success. I owe a great deal of gratitude to the Presidents of Fort Valley State University and Albany State University, our corporate sponsors, FCC fans and supporters, and last but not least, the many volunteers for making this event a great success. Without any one segment of support and hard work, we could not have made it. The Classic, I feel, has grown rapidly into one of the most exciting events in the State of Georgia; we are thankful to God for that. Thanks again for joining us. We hope you enjoy the game and the gathering.
Calvin Smyre Sincerely,

As Market For Black Art Grows, Columbus Museum Offers Class For Novice Collectors
PAGE 8
Director of Spelman College Museum Among Guest Speakers at Art Collecting 101 BY Bridgette Russell, Columbus Museum Special to the Courier
A painting of former First Lady Michelle Obama by Amy Sherald, a Columbusborn African American artist, hangs in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Power couple Beyonce and JayZ recently filmed a music video in the Louvre Museum in Paris. It is safe to say African American art, and African American interest in art, is experiencing a surge in popularity. The shift has provided a great market for
novices to learn about building their own collections and The Columbus Museum is hosting a class to help.
Art Collecting 101 is a day-long event for those who want to build or properly tend a collection or collectors who could use a refresher, said Jonathan Frederick Walz, Ph.D., Museum Curator of American Art and Director of Curatorial Affairs. Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, will provide an overview of the history of African American art.
“Although African American art has always been American art, the market for this material has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade,” Walz said. “As older material gets more scarce, prices will continue to stay steady or rise, making now a good time to collect.” Though African American art is the main focus, advice and skills presented can be applied to art of any kind. Art Collecting 101 will feature short sessions by experts discussing how to start collecting, pitfalls to avoid, and some of the practical considerations involved in caring for artwork. Topics will also include a dealer’s art-world perspective, conservation and care fundamentals, and estate planning. Walz expects the field of African American art to keep growing – from the international level to right here at home. “Columbus has already produced two rock stars: Alma Thomas and Amy Sherald,” he said. “You never know who might be next!”
Art Collecting 101 will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. The cost is $50 per person and space is limited to 30 attendees. To register, please contact Liliana Harrell at lharrell@colum-
busmuseum.com or 706.748.2562 ext. 2124. Tickets can also be purchased online at columbusmuseum.com/event/artcollecting101/.

temporary soul, neo-soul, gospel and contemporary urban jazz, so I consider it soul music that’s essential to everyone’s soul. It’s not just for fans of one genre or another, but for music fans of all backgrounds and ages.
“Being a sideman is a great way to make a living, and I have been blessed to work with some amazing artists, but ultimately it’s like working to make someone else’s dream come true,” he adds. ”I felt it was finally my turn. With Soul Essentials, I really want to pour my soul out through my music and let the world know that I have something to say.”
Myers’ unique background includes being raised a “military brat” who lived everywhere from Germany (where he started playing sax at age 12) to Korea and Mexico. He was also the son of two preachers, and cut his teeth playing sax in church, usually one note per song as he learned to master his horn. He considers music his divine purpose, and his decision to pursue a solo career (several years after leaving the 9 to 5 day job grind) an important step in his journey.
Nate Myers admits he’s not the best public speaker, but when he picks up his saxophone, he finds his voice and becomes a master communicator, expressing his deepest emotions and passionately connecting with audiences everywhere from his adopted hometown of Atlanta to various cities throughout the U.S. and around the globe.
After years of sharing the stage with, touring and opening for some of the biggest R&B and gospel artists in the world, the multi-talented composer and performer takes control of his artistry and musical destiny with the release of
a full length album whose title reflects the drive of his longtime creative mission: Soul Essentials. The collection will include the sensual, ultra-romantic ballad “Pillow Talk,” which Myers released earlier as a digital single.
Explaining the reason behind the project’s ultra-cool title, Myers says, “I like to think of myself as a soulful saxophonist, and when I play, I always want it to be like having a conversation with people and giving them something uplifting and inspiring and this is definitely ‘feel good’ music. The vibe draws from my passions for everything from con-
“Musicians actually fulfill the role of many professions in one, from doctors to therapists,” he muses. “The sax is my weapon to fight the battle called life, and I’ve spent years assisting everyone else with my weapon to lay the groundwork for finding my own voice. I also want to start giving back and am in the planning stages of starting a foundation to help kids develop their musical talents. It’s all about spreading love through music.”
During his college years at South Carolina State University, where he majored in Music Education, he laid the foundation for his professional career playing at churches, weddings, jazz clubs, banquets, concerts and private events. Over the years, he has shared the stage with gospel artists Allen & Allen, Marvin Sapp, Donnie McClurkin and Mary Mary, among others. He has toured with Grammy nominated artist Calvin Richardson and has opened for Charlie Wilson, Fantasia, Kim Burrell,
Tamela Mann and many more. As a solo artist, Myers – a self-professed “big fan of getting the crowd involved” – performs regularly for passengers in piano bars and concourses at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. Other regional venues include The Royal Peacock in Atlanta and Wind Creek Casino in Montgomery.
In 2016, the owner of The Royal Peacock, a native of the African country Eritrea, invited him to perform at their Jubilee Music Extravaganza Tour. He played for thousands of people as part of the first American band to ever perform there, in addition to solo shows at other venues. Myers has also traveled internationally with the party band “Jessie’s Girls,” and regionally with The Main Attraction Band, playing a mix of countryock, rap and R&B. “I like to say that if you can play gospel, you can play anything, and my church background has definitely been a blessing to me,” Myers says.
Although he was born in Columbus, GA and grew up mostly in the U.S., Myers’ first experience playing sax was in his middle school band class in Weisbaden, Germany, where his father was stationed. While honing his talents in church, he became active in his high school marching and concert bands. The summer after his freshman year, he spent every day practicing along with any CD he could get his hands on. He credits his playing and phrasing style to a mixture of influences, ranging from contemporary jazz sax greats Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and Boney James to neosoul vocal artists Musiq Soulchild and Floetry and gospel legend Fred Hammond. During his years at SCSU, he was part of the Marching 101 band. One of his most memorable performances was when he was chosen to play the National Anthem in front of thousands of football fans. He later attended Fort Valley State University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.
