Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
In households all across Shawnee County similar scenarios are taking place as children start receiving their books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Free books for kids
“We began receiving these books soon after the program was brought to our area. My 2-year-old son, who I've read to since before he was born, never really had any interest in books or reading, but since getting several of these books, Otis and the Kittens in particular, HE LOVES BOOKS! On average we read this book 10-15 times a day! They have sent some really cute books and my 4 and 2 year olds love them!” Renessa Ullery Lolly posted on Facebook.
My 3-yearold son spots it right away. Sitting in the mailbox is something he knows came just for him, a shrink-wrapped book with his name on it. How exciting to get mail at that age, let alone Corbin can't wait to get his book a present! It each month. immediately becomes the center of our plans for the night. How can it not? It is colorful and glossy. It is unwrapped before we have the front door unlocked. We read it together three times between dinner and tucking him into bed.
Imagination Library sends an ageappropriate book each month to children birth to 5 years old at no cost to subscribing families. To subscribe go to tscpl.org/imagination and complete the registration form. The only requirement is that the child is a Shawnee County resident. If you move, you can easily update your address on this page. Building a home library supports raising a child who loves reading.
Children enrolled in Imagination Library from birth will accumulate 60 books by their fifth birthday. You can also get your child a library card and participate in pre-reading classes held weekly at the library. The library’s Learn & Play Bus travels the community bringing playful learning opportunities to eight locations tscpl.org/learnplay. Developing reading habits is simple. Set up a routine, a special time each day to snuggle up and read alongside your child. Let her or him pick out the book even if it is the same one as yesterday. Routine is good for young children. Sharing your time with them while reading a book is too. In fact, recent studies suggest that participation in Imagination Library increases early language and math development. More than 3,600 children in our community are receiving books and more than 22,000 books have been delivered. Imagination Library is made possible by generous donations to United Way of Greater Topeka, The Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library.

75 Years on the road with Bookmobiles
Providing Shawnee County with library services from one building is a challenge that requires creativity and commitment. March 15, 2018, marks the 75th anniversary of bookmobiles serving our community. Bookmobile service began in 1943 with a small, converted camper trailer pulled by a Chevrolet coupe, becoming the first traveling branch. This original libraryon-wheels made 10 stops each week and held 1,200 books. As the service grew ever more popular, the library needed a way to meet the increased demand. It was followed shortly with a second mobile unit in 1947. The car and trailer combinations made way for larger vehicles that could provide more amenities and carry more items. In 1951, the original traveling branches were replaced by two retired city buses nicknamed Ben and Betsy that had space for 1,500 books each.
By 1957 they were showing their age and in 1958 three factory-built bookmobiles were purchased. Along with good lighting and air conditioning the new vehicles could hold 3,000 items each. Through the years Traveling branch from the 1940s the community has seen many bookmobiles come and go. In the mid-’70s two new bookmobiles were In 2014 and 2015 the Sherlock and purchased. Get your hands dirty If you’ve ever felt the tiniest urge to grow something, you should go with it! Gardening is a fantastic way to enrich your life and your health. Gardeners talk about the feeling of satisfaction they get from gardening. This may be due to the concept of biophilia – that we are drawn to connect with other living, growing things.
Octopus by Julie Chen
In the Studio:
Growing your own produce is a good way to eat healthier and better. Fruits and vegetables are highest in vitamins and nutrients when they’re just picked. Imagine the fresh taste of food that only traveled a few yards to your table. You control what goes in the soil and on the plants.

Gardening has other documented health benefits like relieving stress, improving heart and brain health, lowering your risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s, improving hand strength and dexterity, and fighting depression.

Ariel’s advice for first time gardeners is to find something that interests you – raised beds, composting, growing tomatoes, planting trees – and learn all you can. Starting a project and already knowing potential obstacles and how to avoid them is key to success. It's easy to get discouraged or overwhelmed in the garden but tackling projects one at a time is a much more manageable approach.

APRIL-MAY 2018
Two years ago, we identified five community impact goals that the library would help achieve. Our number one priority is that every child would be ready for kindergarten. In just one year, the library has implemented strategies to address learning needs for the birth to 6 year olds and the community is benefitting from our work.
Here comes the “Play Bus”!
With only 31 percent of Shawnee County children having access to a formal preschool experience, the library worked in partnership with area educational and health organizations to address this learning gap. Nine months of planning delivered a 40-foot mobile classroom named the Learn & Play Bus (kids call it the "play bus" or "library bus"). Traveling to targeted areas of need, the Learn & Play Bus provides vital literacy skills through playing, talking, reading, singing and writing to prepare kids to enter school. The bright mural-clad bus travels to eight locations across the community. From Feb to Dec 2017, nearly 3,000 children and their families were learning from purposeful play.
Imagine if every child had books at home
It takes more than one strategy to have every child ready for kindergarten and research makes it clear that brain development is very important in a child’s first three-years of life. Further research suggests that the number of books in the home predicts later success in school. In April the library, in partnership with United Way of Greater Topeka, initiated Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library so that children ages birth to 5 years will receive a book delivered by the U.S. Postal Service each month. By the end of 2017 more than 3,500 children or 20 percent of the eligible children in Shawnee County were receiving books at no cost to their family. An annual donation of $25 provides a child with 12 books a year. Another community impact goal is that Topeka and Shawnee County will be an engaged community of readers.
When everyone reads 2Books
If you are curious about why it’s important that everyone reads the same book, the NEA’s Big Read initiative engaged thousands in our community to read the same book, talk about it with friends and attend events relating to the book topic. Our readers loved the community read but always wanted it done more often. In June we launched 2Book Topeka, which gives readers the opportunity to read two featured books. 2Book Topeka is offered three-times a year (Feb-March, June-July and Oct-Nov).
