With a shared community goal of “every child in our community will be ready for kindergarten,” in April 2017 the library and the United Way of Greater Topeka partnered on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which mails a free age-appropriate book every month to enrolled children birth to age 5. All children under 5 years old in Shawnee County are eligible regardless of household income. Our goal is to create a more literate community for whom reading is an essential part of life. Access to books is especially problematic for children living in poverty. It is estimated one child living in a middle-upper income household has on average 13 books of their own, where in low income communities there is one book for 300 children. With the Imagination Library all children enrolled at birth will have at least 60 books of their own when they turn 5. Imagination Library books are selected by a blue-ribbon panel with representatives from education, child development, academia and early childhood literacy expertise. The books incorporate specific themes targeting ageappropriate developmental milestones. New titles are introduced each year to avoid duplication of books older siblings may have received. A recently released research report that summarized several different

studies of the program concluded children who participate in the Imagination Library score 28 percent higher on kindergarten readiness measures than non-participants. Morgan County Schools in Georgia saw their kindergarten readiness scores increase from 46 to 90 percent after three years of the Imagination Library.

Year 1 Results

The Imagination Library has been a success in Shawnee County enrolling 60 percent more children than the Dollywood Foundation, who runs Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, estimated would enroll by the end of the first year. Grants and contributions from individuals and businesses to support this program have enabled more children to participate and receive books mailed directly to their homes. All donations and grants received are used only for direct program expenses of purchasing and mailing books to children.

Library improvements on the way

Own a piece of Claire's Courtyard

Work is underway on Claire’s Courtyard on the southwest side of the library. This new space will include a pavilion, an outdoor courtyard and an outdoor amphitheater for programs and classes. This exciting project is being funded entirely by private donations raised by The Library Foundation and the generous gift from Dr. Glenn Swogger and the Redbud Foundation. The name Claire’s Courtyard honors Swogger’s late wife Claire. We expect to have courtyard construction completed by the end of 2018. This fall you'll also notice construction inside the library to improve customer service and checkout. To prepare for this work, Red Carpet Services and the copier, fax and scanning

New library trustees The Shawnee County Commissioners recently appointed three new trustees who will serve a four-year term on the library’s governing board. Shawn Leisinger is executive director for Washburn School of Law’s Centers for Excellence. "I have always admired the fact that the library has kept up with changes in technology and user needs and desires. I look forward to working with the staff, administration and other board members to continue to move the library forward to serve everyone in our community in the coming years." Kristen Brunkow O’Shea, an organizational development trainer and speaker, owns O’Shea Strength Coaching. "I have a lot of respect for the library. I have witnessed innovative thinking and collaborative endeavors that make me want to be a part of leading this library into the future." Kacy Simonsen is a project manager and estimator at CAS Constructors. “I think the library is and has been a wonderful asset to our community and I want to continue to see it provide joy and learning to others for the near and far future. Being a trustee will allow me the opportunity to pass on the community's interests and concerns with library products, activities and benefits.”

Take your singing out of the shower If you’ve ever thought about refining your singing skills, use your library— right? Then let’s say you want to accompany your perfectly pitched voice with a little music. You’ll need to learn how to play the guitar, mandolin, banjo, drums or even digital instruments. Once you’ve mastered your instrument, check out song writing tutorials. Finally put it all together with some audio production classes. So how can the library help you become a musical master? Use Lynda.com, an online education company that provides video courses taught by industry experts in creative,

software and business skills. Grab your library card and go to tscpl.org/lynda. This subscription-based service is free to library cardholders so once you register with your library card and PIN, you’ll be on your way to becoming a better singer. If singing isn’t what will make you famous, be sure and look over other learning modules including photography, entrepreneurship, animation, web design, marketing, graphic design and music. Search topics by skill level, duration, subject, software, company and even instructor. You will

be singing Lynda.com’s praises as your personal online teacher.

Movie Soundtracks A couple of months ago, GR Marchant in library circulation recommended the soundtrack to Baby Driver on Facebook. Have you heard of the movie? It’s a heist film about a getaway driver who loves music. Anyway, fast-forward a few months and I was finally able to listen to the soundtrack, and oh it’s a good one! It’s got a wide spectrum of musical styles including soul, jazz, rock and pop. AllMusic calls it “an expertly curated soundtrack” and, as I am wont to do, my mind wandered to thinking about other movies with exceptional soundtracks.

I think this is Adam Sandler's best movie and I listen to Rosie (Ellen Albertinin Dow) sing Rapper's Delight on repeat!

There are quite a few places on the internet that offer lists of the all-time best soundtracks – RollingStone, AMC’s Film Site, Digital Trends – and they offer quite a few selections because they don’t always agree. Here are a few movies from the lists whose soundtrack I still listen to. Hoopla has 1,000 soundtracks you can download including all the ones to the right. _________________________________ READ MORE of Shannon Eddings' movie related reviews in her regular web article Movie Mind tscpl.org/moviemind. _________________________________

The Wedding Singer

Did you know this movie won an Academy Award for best original song score? For the longest time, When Doves Cry was my favorite song from "The Purple One." 4

These days Spike Lee's early movies, including this one, are time capsules back to the hip-hop and contemporary R&B of the late '80s. It also has a new jack vibe that I still dig!

What I like most about the music in this movie is that it is spot-on for illustrating depression era Mississippi, plus it almost made me a fan of bluegrass!

Fresh perspectives on graphic art View the work of highly-skilled print artists from across the country Sept 7 - Oct 21 in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. The Printed Image 7 is a national competition that showcases new artworks. Printmaking is the process of making original artworks by hand-pulled print techniques including intaglio, relief, serigraph, lithograph, photogravure, collagraph, monoprint and monotype, and broadsides. The art in the exhibit is selected by an artist who excels in printmaking techniques. The competition is held every two years and each time a different juror selects and judges the prints for the exhibit based on their expertise and perspective.

"We’re always surprised and excited about the art selected and the ideas and techniques these artists are using," said Sherry Best, collections curator. This year our juror is Melanie Yazzie, a printmaker, painter and sculptor whose work has been exhibited in more than 100 places in the U.S. and internationally. Yazzie is currently a printmaking professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder. “My artwork is culturally based in my heritage of being a Diné (Navajo) person,” said Yazzie. “The artworks stem from the thought and belief that what we create must have beauty and harmony from within ourselves, from

JUDGING

books by the

COVER

Contrary to the common advice, judging a book by the cover is really fun and something most readers do. See what library staff had to say when challenged to judge some covers. Responses below are based solely on the front cover image. For fun, we are comparing their ideas to the publisher’s descriptions.

The Sky is Yours

by Chandler Klang Smith • Martha: Psychedelic dragons in love. This is a fantasy. • Autumn: A psychic introduced two people who fall in love and learn they are from warring factions. • Publisher: In a burned-out, futuristic city three young people navigate a crumbling metropolis constantly under threat from a pair of dragons that circle the skies. When violence strikes, reality star Duncan Humphrey Ripple V, the spoiled scion of the metropolis’ last dynasty; Baroness Swan Lenore Dahlberg, his tempestuous, death-obsessed betrothed; and Abby, a feral beauty he discovered tossed out with the trash; are forced to flee. As they wander toward the scalded heart of the city, they face fire, conspiracy, mayhem, unholy drugs, dragonworshippers and the monsters lurking inside themselves.

Little Secrets

Daphne

Eventide

• Betty Jean: In a small town private lives and secrets are revealed. The entire community is aghast at what they are hearing.

• Meredith: I would pick this up because the colors are appealing and I love the name Daphne because of Scooby Doo. This might be historical fiction.

• Joey: This is a book about repression, self-identity and personal struggle. A lost soul is looking for a lost lover who went to war. The main character is a farm girl who wants to be bohemian.

by Anna Snoekstra

• Jim: A family discovers they have small fairy-like creatures living in secret places in their house. • Publisher: An arsonist in Colmstock, Australia, burned down the town's courthouse and killed a young boy trapped inside. An aspiring journalist, Rose Blakey, is desperate for a story. After the fire, precise porcelain replicas of Colmstock's daughters turn up on doorsteps, terrifying parents and testing the limits of the town's already fractured police force. Rose may have finally found her story. But as her articles gain traction and the boundaries of her investigation blur, Colmstock is seized by a seething paranoia.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

• Perry: This is a weird horror story set in a creepy swamp. • Lissa: This is about science and nature. There is foreshadowing of evil and suspense. There may be some fantastical elements. • Publisher: Freshwater explores the surreal experience of having a fractured self. It centers around a young Nigerian woman, Ada, who develops separate selves within her as a result of being born "with one foot on the other side." Unsettling, heart-wrenching, dark, and powerful, Freshwater is a sharp evocation of a rare way of experiencing the world, one that illuminates how we all construct our identities.

TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

by Will Boast

• Todd: A boy meets girl story with political intrigue and maybe a natural disaster that requires extraterrestrial help.

by Therese Bohman

• Michael: A romantic novel oriented to women.

• Publisher: Born with a rare condition that causes her to suffer degrees of paralysis when experiencing intense emotion, Daphne endures a virtually solitary existence before meeting a shy, charming man who compels her to choose between safe isolation and true intimacy.

• Publisher: An astute novel following the life of an art professor at Stockholm University as she navigates the academic world, with its undercurrents of eroticism, competition, deceit and fear.

Call Me Zebra

by Leila Slimani

by Azareen Van der Vilet Oloomi

• Carolyn: A book about acceptance written by an artist. • Tanya: This looks fun, but it might have a serious tone as well. The story may have some racial elements. • Publisher: A novel following a feisty heroine's idiosyncratic quest to reclaim her past by mining the wisdom of her literary icons–even as she navigates the murkier mysteries of love. Zebra is the last in a line of anarchists, atheists and autodidacts. When war came, her family didn't fight; they took refuge in books. Now alone and in exile, Zebra leaves New York for Barcelona, retracing the journey she and her father made from Iran to the United States years ago. Books are Zebra's only companions–until she meets Ludo. Their connection is magnetic; their time together fraught. 8

The Perfect Nanny • Sherry: A woman pretends to be prim, proper and perfect, but she isn’t in a potentially dangerous way. • Carolyn: This is a scandalous tale about marriage wrecking. The main character is buttoned up on the outside, but a hot mess on the inside. • Publisher: When Myriam, a FrenchMoroccan lawyer, decides to return to work after having children, she and her husband look for the perfect nanny for their two young children. They never dreamed they would find Louise: a quiet, polite, devoted woman who sings to the children, cleans the family's chic apartment in Paris's upscale tenth arrondissement, stays late without complaint, and hosts enviable kiddie parties. But as the couple and the nanny become more dependent on one another, jealousy, resentment, and suspicions mount, shattering the idyllic tableau.

Some people think of themselves as a friend of the library because they have a library card and they like us, which is great, we like you too! However, Friends of the Library are people who have purchased a membership (starting at $20) to be part of the non-profit library affiliate the Friends of the Library. This organization has donated more than $1.6 million to the library since 1971 to help the library stay on the cutting edge of technology, services and programs that promote lifelong learning. In addition to memberships, the Friends raise money through book

sales and by operating the Chandler Booktique. Friends members also receive benefits from their membership – free admission to the Friends Night at book sales, 10 percent discount at the Chandler Booktique, access to members-only Booktique Holiday Open House, invitation to Friends Annual Meeting and three newsletters to keep them informed. To become a Friend download the form online at tscpl.org/friends or join while at the Booktique.
