Lost in the stacks the repl acement child

On a cold and foggy afternoon in January 1952, American Airlines Flig ht 6780 slammed into the Mandel household in New Jersey. With fire consuming the apartment, Florence Mandel faced a terrible choice: save her 2-year-old daughter Linda whose clothes were aflame, or her 7-year-old daughter Donna who was trapped by a fallen beam. Urged by Donna to save the baby, Mrs . Mandel rushed Linda outside, but was restrained from re-entering the infe rno. Donna died screaming for her Mom my. Life, of course, would never be the same – not for Mrs. Mandel, who could never forget the last cries of her daughter; not for her husband, Albe rt, who suffered lifelong guilt for not being there when his family needed him; and not for little Linda who had burns over 80 percent of her body. Born into this grieving family, Judy Mandel was a “replacement child” for their beloved Donna. As Judy writes in her memoir, growing up as a replacement child meant being love d, but also feeling separate from her family. The reader finds out that in her own way, Judy, was also a victim of the tragic crash. –Julie Nelson

book review: If I Lie

Quinn’s life in the close-knit military town of Sweethaven used to be pretty good. She was a cheerleader with close friends and dating town golden boy, Carey. Now her world is falling apart and everyone thinks that she’s a traitor and a whore. She was caught on film kissing another boy while Carey was deployed in Afghanistan. The situation looks terrible and only she and Carey know that she wasn’t actually cheating. If Quinn tells anyone what really happened that night, she’ll reveal Carey’s most dangerous secret and break her promise to him. Then Carey goes missing in action and Quinn must deal with the pain of losing him on top of keeping the secret that has pushed her friends and family away from her. Quinn is an incredibly strong person and her mettle is often tested. Quinn volunteers at the local VA Medical Center and has a close friendship with a gruff, old resident named George. Their loving and sarcastic interactions were one of my favorite parts of the book and provide perspective on Quinn’s tough issues. If I Lie by Corrine Jackson is a raw and emotional story, but I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this book to older teens and anyone interested in military life and the loyalty and honor that comes with it. – Lena Vogt

ou don’t have to be a teenager to read stories written for them. There is a lot more to the Young Adult genre than fighting to the death or falling in love with vampires. Teen books are growing in popularity, and now is a great time to come over to the Kids Library, specifically David J’s, and check some out. Many authors of adult books have capitalized on the trend by crossing over to writing teen books.

Some adults are embarrassed to read teen books, but this attitude will cause you to miss out on an amazing genre. Some of our most popular movies right now come from teen books. Discover your favorites on tscpl.org/blog/teens.

We’ve subscribed to hundreds of magazines so you don’t have to. Read the story on the front page and get started at tscpl.org/zinio.

Only now can this dramatic story be told

Local authors publish second novel Article by Phil Anderson, Topeka Capital-Journal

new day of book-writing and publishing has dawned in the capital city, where 20 local authors are taking turns writing one chapter each for our community novel project. The novel, titled SpeakEasy, is about a young cultural anthropologist named Veronica “Ronni” Long who is a doctoral student at the University of Kansas and is in Topeka interviewing a 108-year-old woman named Julia Stanford about her recollections of Prohibition, the Great Depression and both world wars. The novel is being presented as blog posts, with one chapter added per week at tscpl.org. When finished, it will be printed in hard-copy form in time for a book release party Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. at the library. A group of aspiring local authors signed up to write the community novel. Each was given a week to write his or her chapter. Then, the book to that point is handed off to the next author, who has a week to add another chapter — and another layer — to the story. Librarian Lissa Staley helps keep the authors in check with an outline that was established before the novel was started. Each successive chapter must tie in with what has taken place in the story in previous chapters. The goal is for a seamless read, though each author will bring different styles of writing and various twists and turns to the novel’s plot. No one knows where the novel will end up — and that is part of the excitement, she said. After the book is completed online, it will be published in hard-copy form and available for purchase at the library beginning with the Sept. 8 book-launch party. Those who pre-order can purchase SpeakEasy for $5. Ordering information is available at tscpl.org/community-novel.

ur partnership with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, which recently resulted in new touch-screen computers for community centers, expands in October to offer you programming where it’s convenient for you. You’ll soon be able to attend our pre-reading programs, resume writing and computer classes at the center nearest you.

Sessions that might pique your interest include Facebook for Beginners, Resumes, More than a Job (geared toward teens), School Readiness and Playing to Read (for 3-6 year olds and their parents). Look for these and other classes listed in the Oct/Nov edition of Library News. Shawnee County residents with library cards receive Library News in the mail. These initial offerings will be a good gauge for capacity and community demand. Your attendance may help shape programming in community centers going forward, so we hope to see you as one of our first students/guests at these new programs.

“Thanks to this partnership, we’re able to reach out into the community and make library service more equitable for everyone. It’ll be that much easier for people to sharpen their job skills or learn something new from their library,” said Thad Hartman, Community Services manager. “We’re starting with a small selection of programs and look forward to expanding in 2014.”

But don’t wait, visit a community center or send your kids in today to try out one of the new computers or ask a community center staffer to demonstrate one for you. They can also help you get your library card if you don’t already have one.

eave into the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery for the Material Conversations art exhibit, Aug. 2 through Sept. 22. One trip in will forever change your definition of what quilting is.

rides can spend months, maybe even years, planning the wedding of their dreams. If you don’t have that kind of time, come to the library on Thursday, Aug. 29, 7–8:30 pm and learn from three professionals in wedding food, flowers and photography. It’s a perfect opportunity for 2014 brides to discover the books, music and various bridal magazines that provide a cost-saving DIY guide and capture the moment.

Artists belonging to EDGE, a group of textile artists formerly known as Kansas Art Quilters, use hand-dyed fabric and stitching to “paint” with cloth. Through their craft, quilters share their observations of life, the beauty of the land, the destructive power of nature, and the loss of family members. Don’t miss this opportunity to look at the best of the best in contemporary textile art, from realistic to surreal. Material Conversations was juried by Bruce McIntosh, a mixed media and collage artist from California. Sharon Bass, Lawrence, is our guest curator. See 19 works – large and small – by 10 artists. “Most of the artists don’t regard themselves as ‘artists,’ as they came from other professional backgrounds,” Bass said of the group. “All of them use techniques of traditional quilting, but they are not making covers for beds – they are making wall hangings, artistic pieces for expression.” Listen in, eavesdrop or join these lively, visual and material conversations. Find the gallery’s art events on page 12.
