One of the ways we do that is with our podcast, HUSH. It's like a radio show devoted entirely to exalting, critiquing, recommending and boasting about books.

Humans of the LOTY

The usual quiet of diligent shelvers and the occasional wobbling book cart wheel were replaced by excited murmurs, then our CEO, Gina Millsap, stood beneath a tower of balloons to shout out the good word: The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library just won the highest honor for public libraries in the nation. The atrium erupted in whoops and clapping. We looked around at each other and understood inherently that we'd made it happen as a team of 225 dedicated professionals, always striving to make the library better in every way. Less than an hour later, we shouted that same jubilant message to you, our customers, and indeed, this is an award the whole community enjoys together. Your support of the library was essential to being awarded the honor of Library of the Year (LOTY) designation. The staff of the LOTY deserves props for helping to bring us here, too, and we've begun sharing their individual stories and the ways that working with you, our customers, has affected their work lives. You can go read the stories at our social media accounts, or search #HumansOftheLOTY.

Here's a glimpse into some of those stories, generously provided by our awesome staff.

It may be the 100th time I’ve handed someone Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but for that customer, it’s amazing. – Lissa Staley, librarian.

"As I was signing a young woman up for a library card, I told her she had the same name as my favorite young adult fantasy author. She knew which one I referred to. We had a new title by the author that had just arrived that very day. I went down to the workroom and happened to find the book and found the customer to offer her the new book. She was very excited. A month later, she spotted me at the customer service desk and made a point of stopping in and telling me how thrilled she was with the book and happy with our service." – Dianne Elrichs, library associate.

"As an outreach storyteller, I serve 3-5 years olds at preschools in our community. What a joy it is to walk in to a classroom and see faces light up, because Boomer and Ms. Joyce are coming for storytime! This summer I was helping serve lunch at the library and a little girl came in who I recognized from storytime. I could tell she was trying to put together how she knew me. When she realized it, she came up and gave me a hug. Her mother pulled her aside and said 'Remember what I said about hugging strangers.' The little girl replied, 'She's not a stranger. She comes to my school with Boomer Bear!'" – Joyce Hedlund, outreach storyteller.

he first rule of Photo Club is that it's perfectly okay to talk about Photo Club. Anyone is welcome.

Organizer Meg Porteous says that the concept behind Picture This: Digital Photography Club is pretty simple: "We meet and we take pictures." It doesn't matter how advanced or novice you are and whether or not you take pictures with a fancy DSLR or your smartphone. "Technology allows anyone to be an artist," says Porteous. "People can feel intimidated at first, and say, 'But I'm not a photographer.' Who cares? We all have some way of expressing ourselves." Photo Club meets at different locales each month and will soon be offering talks from local photogs, too.

Topeka has a unique history and culture that comes alive through genealogy research. Help bring the hit PBS show, Genealogy Roadshow, to Topeka. Add your voice to our online petition at tscpl.org/roadshow. On the Roadshow, genealogists work with participants’ anecdotal clues, documents and family heirlooms to unite them with histories and people they never knew existed, as well as to reveal surprising turns and incredible histories.

Because of the migrations, there are lost connections with ancestors that pose unique obstacles to research in Kansas.

Bringing the Roadshow to Topeka will enrich its spirit of genealogy and excite the whole community into researching their ancestors. That new dialogue will help our young people to connect with the generations before them, enriching lives and changing perspectives on the history and the future of our city.

It is vital that we explore how this rich heritage makes the Midwest such a different place from the rest of the U.S. Sign the petition today at tscpl.org/roadshow.

Kansas has seen several migrations of both Europeans and African Americans, is home to a rich tribal history and shares a border with a former slave state.

Hit a high note The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is warming up, but we still need your gift so we can hit that high note and reach our goal. Every child in Shawnee County under the age of 5 should have books in the home. With the Imagination Library, they'll be mailed up to 60 books to read and share with parents. The Library Foundation and United Way of Greater Topeka need your help. We're close to our initial goal of $250,000, but to make the program sustainable, we'll need to raise $1 Million. Sponsor one child for $25 a year. That's 12 trips to the mailbox for 12 brand-new stories, and a whole year of falling in love with reading for a child in our community. Librarians from Shawnee Heights schools gather at the high school on an in-service day to get training on all the reading and learning resources offered by the public library.

Shawnee Heights High School librarian Leslie Weishaar is making sure her students visit the school library's second branch: The public library. Nearly every student in the Shawnee Heights USD 450 district now holds a library card to access all the library's resources, and especially the digital library, on schoolsupplied or home devices. They will have ready access to our collection of over 450,000 items, expanding their horizons for research, reference and just pure recreation, too. This is going to boost student success, big time. Teachers will be

empowered to put together easy-toaccess reading lists for their classes, and kids can access those titles instantly on a tablet, computer or smartphone. Connecting Shawnee Heights schools to the public library ups the game for students, teachers and school librarians alike.

Pyko, public services director and Rebecca Greer, curriculum director at USD 450. They decided together to pursue getting all Shawnee Heights students signed up for library cards and using all the resources that affords. Pyko knew the initiative would answer President Obama's ConnectED Library Challenge, announced in the spring of 2015.

"They will learn at a very early age the value of a public library," says Leslie Weishaar, librarian at Shawnee Heights H.S. "It is my hope that when our students graduate they will know how to use a public library no matter where they live, and they will appreciate the importance of the resources provided by a public library."
