is good reading “No, you can’t check out that comic book, you need to get a real book.”

Here are just a few of the ways to encourage reading:

These are words we’ve heard from many well-meaning caregivers who want their kids to become good readers. As librarians, we want to make the case for letting kids read whatever they choose. All reading is good reading. Your child will learn new vocabulary, improve fluency and build comprehension regardless of whether they read comic books, picture books, nonfiction or magazines. The best way to get better at reading is to practice the skill and kids who get to choose their own books are more motivated to practice!

We’ll help you find a great read or the answer to your question.

Call 785 580-4400 Text 785 322-4099 Email ask@tscpl.org Visit at the library or a bookmobile

• Comic books and graphic novels add visual context to new words, enabling vocabulary development. • Cookbooks are complex technical texts that will expose kids to new vocabulary. Helping your child try out a new recipe also provides a wonderful opportunity for family bonding time.

Even the youngest readers benefit from choosing their own books. While you may grow tired of reading The Snowy Day for the 47th time this week, your child is developing important reading skills like phonological awareness (the idea that words are made up of sounds) and narrative skills. Older readers begin to develop personal interests. Feeding their curiosity is a fantastic way to keep kids reading. _____________________________

said librarian Natalie Moreland. _____________________________

Ask a librarian.

• Audiobooks easily turn car time into reading time and give kids access to more challenging books than they might be able to read on their own. They’re also great for kids who need to be active. A pair of headphones and a download from Hoopla can turn any device into an opportunity to read while walking, drawing or playing.

“That book’s too easy for you.”

“Just yesterday my daughter was very excited to tell me about the skateboarding cat she’d read about in a Ripley’s Believe it or Not book,”

Staff works to get you the right information

Get a library card With a library card you can get tons of fabulous free entertainment and information electronically or in print - ebooks, movies, music, magazines, audiobooks, online training and books. You can access most of this cool stuff anywhere you have an internet connection.

• Joke books can be particularly motivating (who doesn’t want a good laugh?) and help kids learn about figurative language and words with more than one meaning. • With their shorter articles and appealing layout, magazines often entice kids to try out new topics that might not hold their interest in a fulllength book.

I

f anything can make reading better, it’s getting together with other readers to share thoughts about a book and see the story through new eyes.

For some people, the friendships are the best part of clubs. Librarian Lissa Staley has led discussions at the library since 2003. Her book club Classics Made Modern meets early to catch up with each other and show off pictures of grandkids before the club meeting begins.

Here are three reasons book clubs are the best way to take your book-joy to the next level.

“We call it ‘secret social time,’ although everyone is welcome,” Staley said. “Some folks meet for lunch first and spend the entire afternoon at the library, building connections well beyond the book.”

– connect with 1 Community other readers who offer different perspectives on life and books.

HUSH podcast Every three weeks, listen to librarian hosts Thad Hartman, Lissa Staley and Miranda Ericsson with special guests from the library and community who make book and/or movie recommendations.

“Book discussion gives an opportunity to socialize with others with similar interests and different backgrounds,” said Shelby Schellenger, Graphic Novel Panel leader.

Dr. Sara Tucker agrees. She has facilitated discussions around Topeka for decades and has seen relationships grow. Tucker leads TALK (Talk About Literature in Kansas) four times a year.

You know when you come to book club you’re meeting on common ground—a love of reading.

“Books become a vehicle for getting to know a diverse bunch of interesting, intelligent book-reading people,” Tucker said.

“You never know where the conversation will go and the discussion opens your mind to new ideas or ways of thinking,” said Gwen Wilson, member of the Bean There, Read That book club since it started in 2012.

Read more & read different Book clubs motivate you to keep reading so you can join the conversation and share your

perspective. Clubs encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone. “I like that book club forces me to read stuff I'd never pick up otherwise,” said Michelle Morris co-leader of Bean There Read That. “I've found several titles I truly enjoyed.”

Own it or make it your own Your library offers a club for pretty much every taste (tscpl.org/bookclubs) from humanities to graphic novels. We even have groups for discussing articles. Some groups meet at the library and some meet at Topeka businesses.

If these aren’t your cup of tea (or coffee) you can start your own group. Our Book Group in a Bag collection offers more than 200 titles for book clubs. Each bag includes 10 copies of the book and a binder full of resources and discussion guides. See the complete selection at bgib.tscpl.org. If you need book club advice, just ask a librarian to help you get started.

Meet 50 talented authors and representatives from publishers, literary magazines and writing groups. Add signed books to your collection and buy gifts for family and friends.

in from the page and make vivid images, real emotions and magic connections in our individual brains. My brain doesn't make the same magic as your brain.

Here is an excerpt from librarian Lissa Staley’s personal memoir, “The Hardest Question.” This is one of more than 20 personal stories in the 2017 community novel written by Topeka and Shawnee County community members.

Sometimes that means we like different books, and sometimes it means we can read the same book and have different experiences. Thankfully, it guarantees us all the opportunity to have a lifetime of reading and talking about books.

“What books changed your life?” Yes. Go ahead and ask. The book evangelist is at your service. You’ve come to the right person, but you’ve asked the hardest question.

Sometimes you trust me enough to allow me to help you discover your books. Occasionally, I help you articulate what you like to read and help you understand what you like about those stories. Maybe today you are in the mood for something sad or scary or sexy or silly….

Because the truth is, the books that changed my life will not change yours.... What I quickly realized was that the reasons why I love a book, or treasure a particular author, may not hit on any of the carefully articulated appeal factors I learned about in my master’s program. (Oh, yes—you see, I am a professional book evangelist.) Looking back over the books that have changed my life or stick out in my memory is more like skimming a journal of the times and places and people in my past life who were part of those experiences....

You’ve asked the hardest question, and you trust that I can help you find the books to answer it. But you must understand. My books will wait. Everything that matters to me at this moment is you.

We walk to the shelf together, and I pass the time by chattering away about the various perks of being a library user. I will, no doubt, spot one of my own favorites there in the stacks. Maybe I hold in a smile, or I blink rapidly and swallow hard as we pass. This time, my heart leaps at the sight of the bright aqua cover of Living with Saints by Mary O’Connell, which mashes together the sacred and the secular in short stories that shocked and delighted me. I discovered this one the month it came

My books are my personal history. The books that made me laugh or cry are entirely contextual—as are what I find funny or heartbreaking. The books that made me angry or excited or scared might as well say more about what I was going through in my life when I read them than anything about the words the author put on the page. Books are imprinted, static, constant. Reading is fluid, capricious, intimate. The same book is different for every reader because our eyes take the words

TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

out, browsing the library’s New Books section, not realizing that someday the author would occasionally click “like” on social media photos of my children. I give the book a tiny wave of acknowledgement, so it doesn’t feel slighted. But I don’t point it out to you, because that’s one of my books, and right now we are looking for your books. Your books are waiting for you.

Seldom is heard a discouraging word Our home on the range will turn 157 years old on Jan 29, 2018. This seems like a good time to look at some of our more interesting history.

Pteranodon, Kansas State Fossil

Inventions/discoveries Helium was discovered by University of Kansas faculty after an oil drilling operation in Dexter in 1903. In 1909 William Purvis and Charles Wilson of Goodland invented the helicopter, which they called a gyrocopter. They were granted the first U.S. patent for a helicopter in 1912, but both men had abandoned the project by that time. While the project was unsuccessful, its concepts were revolutionary. In the 1950s a Coffeyville Dairy Queen owner, Oma Knedlik, invented the ICEE. He did not have a soft drink fountain in his store so he froze bottles of soda and sold them to his customers still frozen. He then built the first ICEE machine.

Tylosaurus, Kansas State Fossil

State symbols

Residents

We have a state soil. The Harney Silt Loam was selected as the state soil in 1990. A “typical” prairie soil was chosen to acknowledge the pioneer spirit and great agricultural history of the state.

In 1877 Fred Harvey opened his first restaurant in the Santa Fe Topeka train depot. His restaurants were immortalized in the 1956 MGM musical, The Harvey Girls, starring Judy Garland. Harvey said, “If you don’t behave like gentlemen, you can’t stay here and you can’t come again. Now put up your guns and take a drink with Fred Harvey!”

In 2014 Tylosaurus and Pteranodon were chosen to be the Kansas State Fossils. The Tylosaurus is the state marine fossil and Pteranodon is the state flying fossil. Tylosaurus was a more than 40 feet long mosasaur that lived in the sea that covered the majority of Kansas during the Mesozoic era (roughly 252 to 66 million years ago). The Pteranodon was a giant winged dinosaur who had a wingspan of more than 24 feet and also lived in the area covering Kansas during the Mesozoic era. Review the lyrics to our state song “Home on the Range.” There are some interesting lines including, “On the banks of the Beaver, where seldom if ever any poisonous herbage doth grow” and “The zephyrs so balmy and light.”

Topeka Pastor Charles Monroe Sheldon started the What Would Jesus Do movement with this book In His Steps, which was first published in 1896. This book is still in print today and can be checked out at the library.

If you’re curious about these facts or more Kansas history, visit the Topeka Room inside the library on the second floor. The ICEE was invented in Coffeyville, Kansas. TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS
