performs at the library

TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

Jeff Kready's Singing, Acting & Reading Topeka native and currently starring in Tootsie on Broadway, Jeff Kready will sing for us during Music for a Sunday Afternoon, Feb 16, 3:30-5pm. We learned more about his thoughts on acting, singing, reading and his hometown library. Tell us about your favorite Broadway moment. I’ll never forget walking onto a Broadway stage for the first time in front of an audience. My knees felt weak, and even though all I had to do in that opening scene of Les Miserables was walk across the stage, it was terrifying. And exhilarating. And magical.

especially the recurring declaration that “ignorance is strength.” Take that how you will. Up next, and I can’t wait to get to it, is The Topeka School by Topeka High graduate Ben Lerner! What books do you recommend? New York by Edward Rutherford if you like historical fiction. I see the streets of the city so differently after having read that. A Prayer for Owen Meany is a book I could read a hundred times and never tire of. And Replay by Ken Grimwood is a beach read you’ll blow through, I promise.

Consumer Reports is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping consumers make informed decisions about matters and products that impact our daily lives. They provide an unbiased approach to their work by hiring mystery shoppers and conducting research without the influence of outside advertising.

Reviewing the ratings is a simple way to learn about quality products within your budget. The online tool lets you filter the ratings by overall score, price, features and specs. For example, if you’re looking for smart speakers and sound quality is the most important feature, you can filter the ratings by setting the minimum sound quality rating you will consider. Then it drops the speakers that don’t meet that minimum from your results.

Enter as a team of 5-8 people to answer 100 questions from 10 categories. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams! Doors open 30 minutes prior. Registration begins Dec 1 at 9am tscpl.org/trivia.

Lindsay Freeman’s Recommendations

Talking with Bestselling YA Author

It's early morning, the sun isn't even thinking about rising and Topekan Lindsay Freeman is in her rocking chair with a cup of coffee and a good book. She's up as early as 4:45 every morning (even weekends) to get lost in a book in the pre-dawn peace and quiet.

Meet one of the most popular new young adult authors, Adib Khorram, at the library Wed, Feb 26. His hilarious and heartbreaking debut novel, Darius the Great Is Not Okay, received critical and readers’ acclaim. Khorram won the William C. Morris Debut Award and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Young Adult Literature.

Freeman, Director of Community Engagement for Advisors Excel, is an avid reader and library user. While she's one of TK Magazine's 2018 Top 20 under 40, some might consider her preferred reading format a bit old school. "I love the touch and smell of a print book," said Freeman. "I need to have it in my hands." For the most part she reads fiction, but in the last year she's been reading more and more nonfiction books to improve her leadership skills. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz was a recent nonfiction read that Freeman loved. "It's a short book with a powerful punch," she said. "It's real talk about topics we tackle every day. The four agreements are all things we know and should live by but are not always easy. Especially the agreement of not taking things personally, that takes some work.” In fiction Freeman recommends any books by Elin Hildebrand and Emily Giffin. She also recommends

How to Walk Away by Katherine Center. "Oh my, was it good!" said Freeman. "The author takes a really rough topic and weaves it into a sweet love story. I loved this one!" She said her friends might be surprised to find a young adult book in her tote bag. "The book Wonder really opened my eyes to the wonderful books written for young adults that also can be enjoyed by adults," Freeman said. Rejection Proof by Jia Jang and The Un-Honeymooners by Christina Lauren are the next books on Freeman's list. Visit tscpl.org/freeman to read more about Freeman’s reading and view her booklists of recommended reads.

Adib Khorram

Becky Albertalli, author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda described Khorram’s novel as, “Heartfelt, tender, and so utterly real. I’d live in this book forever if I could.”

especially intersectional ones,” said Khorram. “I also hope they [readers] come away seeing Iran and Iranians as real and human.” Currently, Khorram is not a full-time writer. He works as a graphic designer and videographer in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was born and raised. In addition to writing books, his interests include trying new tea, CrossFit, ice skating, video games and Kansas City barbecue. Mark your calendar to be part of a conversation with Khorram and get your book signed Wed, Feb 26, 7-8:30pm.

Khorram has been surprised by the success of his first book. “Seeing it become popular has been surreal,” said Korram. “At some level I always thought I was the only one who ever felt the way I did. But I managed to get at something universal in Darius's story. Still not sure how I managed it!” Darius the Great is Not Okay explores mental illness and racial issues as Darius struggles with depression. Darius is a half-Persian teen who has a hard time connecting with his Persian heritage while living in America. At the same time, he can’t connect with his American peers because he’s too awkward and nerdy. Khorram presents a truthful coming-of-age story about friendship and discovering yourself when and where you least expect it. “With so many young people dealing with mental health challenges, I think we need more authentic stories,

CENSUS 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The 2020 Census is closer than you think! Here’s a quick refresher of what it is and why it’s essential that everyone is counted.

Everyone counts.

It’s about fair representation.

The census counts every person living in the U.S. once, only once, and in the right place.

Every 10 years, the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets.

Local governments use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness.

It’s about redistricting. After each decade’s census, state officials redraw the boundaries of the congressional and state legislative districts in their states to account for population shifts.

It’s about $675 billion.

2020 will be easier than ever.

Your privacy is protected.

In 2020, you will be able to respond to the census online.

It’s against the law for the Census Bureau to publicly release your responses in any way that could identify you or your household. By law, your responses cannot be used against you and can only be used to produce statistics.

The distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on census data. That money is spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs.

Sneaky Learning

on the

Go

The holiday season includes road trips for many of us. Road trips can equal literacy building time when you listen to audiobooks. Audiobooks make the time pass more quickly and they help with reading comprehension, fluency and the background knowledge that makes us all better readers. Audiobooks can introduce kids to books above their reading level and increase their vocabulary. Listening to books together is also an excellent opportunity to bring up important topics between kids and parents.

Take learning up a notch by incorporating some activities with your listening: ■■ Pause the audiobook now and then to talk about the book (or do this whenever you stop for a travel break). Ask questions.

"Which character in the story is your favorite?"

"Are there characters you really don't like?"

"Would you like to visit the place described in this book?" ■■ You can also make predictions about where the story is going during your breaks. Then see who comes closest to being right! ■■ Challenge each other to listen for words you don't know. If someone doesn't know what a word means, have them write it down or shout "stop" so you can look up the meaning together. Keep a list of the words you learn. ■■ Draw along with the story. Draw what you think the characters look like or illustrate a scene from the story.

It's preschool on wheels! Hop on the bus with your 0-5 year old for storytime and learning play with puzzles, art, blocks and imagination.

Pumpkin Doesn't Need

Sugar & Spice Read more by Adrianne Evans at tscpl.org/home/cooking

Right now so many of us are on a pumpkin spiced high! Pumpkin spiced everything is a fairly new trend. I’m always reminded of how appalled my French friends were with the thought of a vegetable being served spiced and sweetened.

Warm Pumpkin Cheese Dip 1-1/4 cups plain low fat yogurt 3/4 cup (3 ounces) goat cheese, room temp 1/2 teaspoon butter 1/3 cup evaporated milk (fat free if you choose) 1 cup thinly sliced leek 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 3 large egg whites 1 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spoon yogurt onto several layers of paper towels; spread to ½ inch thickness. Cover with additional paper towels; let stand 5 minutes. Scrape into a large bowl using a rubber spatula. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add leek; saute’ 5 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat, and stir in thyme and salt. Place strained yogurt, goat cheese and remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Beat with a mixer at medium speed just until smooth. Stir in leek mixture. Spoon pumpkin mixture into a 1-quart baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes (mine always takes at least 10 minutes longer) or until dip is bubbly and lightly browned. Serve warm with crisp breadsticks, bagel chips, or toasted French or sourdough baguette slices. TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

I’ve included one of my all-time favorite recipes using pumpkin in a savory way. I’ve made this dip for holiday parties for more than 15 years. I found the recipe all those years ago in a Cooking Light magazine. It always surprises everyone because it isn’t sweet but it's still good! -Adrianne Evans
