magine if every child had books in their home. Now, imagine if every child was read to from birth, which helps young brains develop language, vocabulary and other important cognitive skills. Realize that 61 percent of low income families have no children’s books in their homes. Only half of babies and toddlers are read to regularly—not just in low-income families, but across all incomes and educational levels.

To sign up your child (birth - 5 years) for this program visit tscpl.org/ imagination, select the registration link and complete the registration form. Your child will start receiving books eight to 10 weeks after the registration form is received. Your child will receive a book every month until they turn 5 or you move out of Shawnee County. Books are mailed to the address on the registration form. If the child’s address changes, you must change your address at the Parent Portal linked at tscpl. org/imagination or call United Way 2-1-1 with the new address.

How do we change this? You make it convenient, comfortable and part of the family’s daily routine. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free book program that promotes literacy skills for all children from birth to 5 years old. Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in the child’s name directly to their home. The library and United Way of Greater Topeka have joined together to make Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library available to all children who live in Shawnee County to help prepare them for kindergarten.

Karen Lewis

Topeka Letter Carrier

“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has been shown to improve early childhood literacy for children in the program,” said Gina Millsap, CEO, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. “Community donors underwrite the costs of the books and the postage for mailing to the child’s home. That’s 60 times a child will rush to the mailbox asking ‘Is there something for me?’”

timulate your brain and honor two authors with Topeka connections in one literary weekend. On June 10 Brooksfest recognizes the contributions of awardwinning poet Gwendolyn Brooks, who was born in Topeka and would have turned 100 this summer. On June 11 you’ll hear Topeka High grad and national journalist, Elizabeth Farnsworth, discuss her new book and her experiences reporting in unstable places around the world.

Your library is both a physical place and a digital space. You can access each with your card. It’s your key to entertainment, information, resources and tools you can utilize to enrich your life. Your library card gives you access to a massive collection of books, of course. But it’s also your portal to media, technology and movies. With your card, you can gather the materials that help you learn, play and laugh. Your library card is small, but it is mighty. Get your card at tscpl.org/librarycard.

Celebrate the weekend with literary legends, past and present June 10 & 11 "Gwendolyn Brooks had only one birthplace and it was Topeka,” said Kansas Poet Laureate Eric McHenry. “And her sharp, incisive, beautiful poetry is as vital today as it ever was, and as necessary here as anywhere." Nationally renowned poet Kevin Young will be the featured presenter at Brooksfest. Young is the poetry editor of the New Yorker and director Kevin Young, of New York Public presenter Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Young has published several books of poetry including Blue Laws: Selected & Uncollected Poems 1995-2015 and Book of Hours (2015). This event will also include readings by other highly-acclaimed authors and student poets.

Brooksfest: A Gwendolyn Brooks Centennial Celebration, June 10, 1 – 5 p.m. Brown v. Board National Historic Site Gwendolyn Brooks, Experience poetry, art author and stories during this community festival in honor of Topekaborn poet Gwendolyn Brooks, the first African-American to win a Pulitzer Prize. Her family moved to Chicago when she was young and her many honors include serving as the Illinois Poet Laureate from 1968 until her death in 2000. Brooks would have turned 100 years old on June 7, 2017.

Elizabeth Farnsworth: A Train through Time, June 11, 2- 3:30 p.m. Marvin Auditorium 101 BC Celebrated journalist Elizabeth Farnsworth, Elizabeth Farnsworth author made her literary debut

Farnsworth's work as a foreign correspondent trained her to shine light on others, but she opens up about her own life in her memoir. A Train Through Time weaves a child’s imaginative adventures with vivid memories from reporting in danger zones like Cambodia and Iraq, and exploring how she became involved in covering mass death and disaster. At her first literary event in Topeka, Farnsworth will share the powerful experience that motivated her to write her own story. Book sales and signing will follow the event. Check out work by Brooks, grab a copy of Farnsworth's new book and ask a librarian how to find more powerful work by Topeka and Kansas authors.

Think about multiplying your reading experience when you join 2Book Topeka, our new community reading initiative. We are a reading community and have come together 11 times in the past to read the same book, talk about it and enjoy events. Think of 2Book Topeka as “big read” times two! This summer we are asking everyone in Shawnee County to read two books about the core of what makes us human – our DNA. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot tells the story of a woman that scientists know as HeLa. Henrietta Lacks was a poor farmer, yet her cells--taken without her knowledge--became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine, uncovered secrets of cancer and helped lead to in vitro fertilization, cloning and gene mapping. These cells have been bought and sold by the billions.
