ince last June, we have been sharing stories about all the things that contributed to our library being named Library of the Year (LOTY). Now it’s time to discover your story at the library during National Library Week (NLW), April 9-15.
Here’s why we say Libraries Transform: Because if you haven’t been to the library lately or EVER--this is your invitation to check us out and see what the library has or does that you may not know about. We’ll give you an insider look at the library, through a series of “pop-up” events that will be offered MondayFriday at 5 different times each day. Because being Library of the Year is a win for all of us, be sure and stop by the LOTY selfie backdrop in the main hall atrium and hold up a “trophy” to show

Get a library card Your library is both a physical place and a digital space. You can access each with your card. It’s your key to entertainment, information, resources and tools you can utilize to enrich your life. Your library card gives you access to a massive collection of books, of course. But it’s also your portal to media, technology and movies. With your card, you can gather the materials that help you learn, play and laugh. Your library card is small, but it is mighty. Get your card at tscpl.org/librarycard.

For children, there is a diverse collection of board books, picture books and beginning reader books along with a collection of toys, traditional games and wooden puzzles. The collection also includes Spanish materials for both adults and kids.
"The Flourishing Center is an asset to our homeless families for many reasons," said Hosman. "Not only does it provide the opportunity for children and families to check out a number of fun and educational books, toys and games, it also gives families the opportunity to bond and connect with one another through reading and play…

Two Events Celebrating National Poetry Month Poetry goes beyond printed words on a page--it's an experience. We read, listen and respond with our own writing. Your library can help you do all three with readings, skill-based workshops and a vast collection of resources. In April, National Poetry Month, we’re hosting two poetry events. April 20 - Poetry Slam @ The Jayhawk Theatre Headliners are Topekan Matt Spezia, 7-time national slam champion and 2016 winner of the National Poetry Award for slam artist of the year and Create/Uplift, a local hip-hop-centric organization. The Jayhawk Theatre, a historic and architectural marvel of early vaudeville theatres and jazz-era movie palaces, is the perfect setting for an evening of immersion in Topeka's vibrant spoken word scene. "Spoken word poetry is the expression

of soul manifested verbally, and the major difference between it and page poetry is the performance. When an artist steps on stage to present poetry they have to be the emotion," says Matt.
Sharpen your writing skills with great guide books by masters of the craft in our literature section or check out our lineup of upcoming writing events to get hands-on.
April 26 - Open Mic & Poetry Reading The beauty of attending live poetry events is that they’ll inspire you to create your own poetry. The library can spur you along on that mission.
We host skills-based programs every month between April and July, and offer a morning of workshops the third Saturday in August.
Local poets are invited to take the mic first and then featured poets Leah Sewell and Roy Beckemeyer will read from their work.
Book Rich Environment
The library is one of 30 across the country invited to participate in a new partnership with Topeka Housing Authority. The initiative will bring books and literacy tools to 4 million children and families, including those in our community.
Engage, experience and create. Wherever you are in your journey with poetry, your library has you covered. Visit tscpl.org/writers to find out more. See page 10 for times and locations.
The first step is reading and listening to poetry. Tap into our diverse collection of poetry in print, e-format and audio.
DigitalLearn.org comes to Topeka The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library has been selected as one of three libraries to participate in DigitalLearn, a collection of self-directed online classes that will help people increase their digital literacy, and develop a community for digital literacy trainers to share resources, tools and best practices. DigitalLearn is tailored to Topeka’s specific needs. The online classes include topics like: Why Use a Computer, Using Windows 10, Navigating a Website, and Internet Privacy. It also provides
training on daily living skills like job searching, buying a plane ticket and an introduction to Facebook.

2 BOOKS Think about multiplying your reading experience when you join 2Book Topeka, our new community reading initiative. Everyone in Shawnee County will have the opportunity to read two books about the core of what makes us human: our DNA.
The Last Night at Tremore Beach by Mikel Santiago What starts out as an idyllic summer holiday on the Irish coast soon becomes a living nightmare with unpredictable consequences for a world-renowned composer and his family in this chilling psychological thriller. Gripping and impossible to put down, The Last Night at Tremor Beach is a haunting, atmospheric thriller perfect for fans of Stephen King and S.J. Watson.
When kids read “Search & Find” books like I Spy and Where’s Waldo, they’re working on important study skills in a fun, painless way.
I Spy books can teach kids to: Skim and scan Work methodically Pay close attention to detail Stick with a challenge Think flexibly (sometimes a word can have more than one meaning!)
— Jennifer Jones
Various programs and discussions will be featured in the June-July edition of Library News.
Comic books such as Big Nate and graphic novels like Lumberjanes can keep kids busy reading for hours. Comic books help kids: Build visual literacy Make inferences Build vocabulary (Dr. Stephen D. Krashen, Professor Emeritus of Education, University of Southern California, found a comic book a day will expose your kid to about 500,000 words over the course of a year) Be exposed to a variety of art styles
LET'S READ! Book #1: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Book #2: The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer.
More details can be found at tscpl.org/2books
Mrs. Sherlock Holmes by Brad Ricca A spellbinding true crime history that reads like a novel, Mrs. Sherlock Holmes is the story of the first female U.S. District Attorney and traveling detective who found missing eighteen-year-old Ruth Cruger when the entire NYPD had given up.
As a parent, I can’t tell you how thrilled I was when a series of graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier helped turn my kid into a reader. I’m so grateful that her teachers and school librarian recognized the value of graphic novels rather than considering them second-rate literature. A third kind of highly-visual reading material, hybrid novels, combine visual elements of comic books and graphic novels with more traditional text-based storytelling to create books kids want to read. The Origami Yoda series and The Zero Degree Zombie Zone are two popular examples. Again, kids build the same important reading skills with hybrid novels as they do with traditional novels. Try one today!
