As flowers and plants reemerge and bloom this spring, so will the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. Wonder at our redesigned gallery spaces that give you room to contemplate art, feed your curiosity and create. Also take a moment to reflect on the generous donors whose funds support the gallery and the cost of the redesign.
Jerry is a retired chemist who has been volunteering in the gallery since 2002. He has also served on the Friends of the Library board and is a member of The Library Foundation’s Wilder Society. Judy was an avid volunteer for Topeka Public Schools, Countryside United Methodist Church and Brewster Place. Reed's generous donation will help more people engage with art.
The library gallery was formally renamed the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery in 2002. The gallery is named to honor the memory of local artist, educator, designer and philanthropist Alice C. Sabatini. Frank C. Sabatini, his sons Marc, Matt, Mike and Dan, and Capital City Bank created the Alice C. Sabatini Endowment to fund an Alice C. Watch the library’s Facebook page and website for specifics about our grand reopening event. The first exhibit, Reflections, invites you to explore the past, present and future of art through pieces from the library’s permanent collection, which is as varied as our community’s interests and curiosity. There will also be an opportunity for you to collaborate in a community art project.

As we mark our 150th anniversary, let's look at how the physical library has changed to meet the needs of many generations of Topekans. While the library had many temporary homes between 1870 and 1883, its first permanent building was quite grand. In spring 1883 the Topeka Library Association building opened on the Statehouse grounds. In addition to book and research spaces, the library included a hall for dances, music performances and other entertainment. There was a period when children in Topeka had their very own library building. In 1933, David Winfield Mulvane’s heirs gifted his home at 11th and Van Buren to the library. After renovations the house became the Mulvane Girls and Boys Library in Sept 1939. The library was an immediate success with large crowds of children packing the porches and rooms of their library. In 1947 Topekans approved bonds for the library to build a new main building to meet the needs of Topeka’s

growing population. The new midcentury modern building at 10th and Washburn opened on Dec 13, 1953. Throughout the 1950s Topekans engaged in intense public debate and efforts to save the old library building on the Statehouse grounds. However, the State Legislature had it razed in the summer of 1961. The Mulvane Girls and Boys Library closed in 1959 and the collection moved to the main library. The Mulvane building was purchased by the State and razed to build the Kansas Judicial Center. The 10th & Washburn building was expanded in the early 1970s and again in the late 1990s. The major expansion and remodel in the 1990s was led by HTK Architects and designed by internationally renowned architect Michael Graves. The new design changed the entire look of the building and added 3
more community spaces. Visitors are welcomed with Grave's style of color, geometric shapes and texture. This expansion was completed in Jan 2001. Renovations in the last few years continue to expand library spaces with the addition of Claire's Courtyard and to modify spaces to better meet the needs of our community. The buildings have changed, but the concept of a public library for Topekans and all Shawnee County citizens has remained. A great library never gets old.

Ally Teske's Recommendations
If you’re looking for thoughtprovoking reads, community member and library fan, Ally Teske has recommendations for you. “I’m not sure which college professor instilled the mantra, ‘Never stop learning,’ but it took hold,” said Teske. "That is why one of my book recommendations is The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming by David Wallace-Wells. He drew me in by relating so much of what is happening today globally to what's happening here at home. The economic impact and the social impact of this crisis will affect us all.” She also recommends the following insightful nonfiction reads: American Prison by Shane Bauer, Rage Becomes Her by Soraya Chemaly and The Courage to Soar by Simone Biles. While nonfiction is her general goto, Teske mixes in some fiction for balance. The latest book she fell in love with was The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. “The main character realized he had a power that wasn’t something to be ashamed of but to use to his benefit,” said Teske. “This idea really resonated with me as I sometimes feel powerless like many of us do in the current climate. It’s good to be reminded of our power.”
When asked which character she’d like with her if she were stuck in an elevator, Teske chose Circe from Madeline Miller’s novel by the same name. “Circe would be great entertainment and she’d get us out of the elevator,” said Teske. “Her attitude, aptitude and resourcefulness are inspiring.” A few of the other fiction titles Teske recommends are Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson, My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh and Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson.

When she’s not reading, Ally is spending time with her three kids and her husband, substitute teaching, or sharing knowledge she’s gained with her friends. Visit tscpl.org/teske to read more about Teske’s reading and view her full booklists of recommended reads.
Teske’s reading covers a wide range of genres. “I want everyone to know that I also read Christian romance and Amish novels,” said Teske. “I think they’re the bee’s knees! My latest Amish book was The Christmas Letters by Patricia Davids, Sarah Price and Jennifer Beckstand. I’ve also enjoyed the Quilts of Lancaster County series by Barbara Cameron." Meet a recent National Book Award Winner We know an amazing author will visit us on the evening of Wed, April 8, but we are in suspense on which author will visit. Mark your calendar to hear a National Book Award winner speak at the library. Watch the library’s Facebook page and website to find out the identity of the author. Established in 1950, the National Book Awards are American literary prizes administered by the National Book Foundation (NBF), a nonprofit organization. A pantheon of writers such as William Faulkner, Marianne Moore, John Updike, Norman Mailer, Toni Morrison, Flannery O’Connor, Adrienne Rich, Jesmyn Ward and Ta-Nehisi Coates have all won National Book Awards. Although other categories have been recognized
in the past, the awards currently honor the best fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people’s literature published each year. At the time of this printing the NBF had not finalized the author to visit Topeka, but we are guaranteed it will be a prominent author as part of the NBF Presents program. NBF brings National Book Award–honored authors and nationally recognized moderators to libraries, colleges, book festivals and performance venues for public readings, discussions and presentations. NBF Presents is designed to give audiences access to some of our country’s most renowned writers and their books and to create spaces where authors and audiences can connect, talk and share ideas.
The library will host four workshops on Sat, April 4 (see Music & Entertainment events on this page). Other workshops will be held at Washburn and at the Jayhawk Theatre. All workshops are free to attend, but registration is required at washburn.edu/wifi. Topics will
