EDITOR’S NOTE Living in Dubai we are genuinely spoilt for choice when it comes to the different dining options, with thousands of restaurants serving up food from all corners of the world, but some of the best cuisine is here on our doorstep. Middle Eastern food is a fusion of dishes spanning many countries from Turkey in the north to Yemen in the south, and from Egypt in the west to Iran in the east, and everywhere in between. This month we take a little tour of Dubai and highlight just a few of the different ones to try and what you can expect. Moving our taste buds further apart, we visited chef Izu Ani’s latest restaurant Aya, a Japanese restaurant with Mediterranean influences, and we were pretty impressed. We also continue our series on individuals who are using their time and expertise to do something different and to give back, and this month we met with Dubai resident Dr Shambavi Rajagopal, who launched Save Scrap and Sew, which has grown into a team of over 100 buddies that create sheets, pillows and bags from tailors scraps, and given to those in need, locally and internationally. It's another great issue with loads to keep the family informed and updated, as well as more amazing competitions with some great prizes, free for you to enter. Enjoy the issue and enjoy the month, and even with the extra day it may be a short one, but it most certainly is a fun one!

CONNECTOR CHAMPIONS
How some scrap and a strong will
can make a difference Dr Shambavi Rajagopal, 53, a woman filled with compassion and passion started a very simple yet innovative initiative on her own roughly four years ago without knowing that one day it won’t only bring a purpose to the lives of many but will also create an impact across the globe.
O
ne ordinary day, as Dr. Shambavi Rajagopal, who had just finished her PhD, visited her tailor, and on seeing a pile of waste cloth at the shop asked him, “Where does it all this go?”, the answer was quite obvious - “to landfill.” That day Dr Shambavi Rajagopal came back home with an unsettling thought on what can be done with the scrap. She knew she could not do it alone, so she made a WhatsApp group, added some people from her building to it, explained her idea to them and the same evening, the project began. Now some four years after the social crusade began, a collective group of more than 200 men, women and teens have recycled 5 tonnes of scrap material collected from various tailors and boutiques across the UAE and have donated over 10,000 sheets, bags and pillows to the needy across the globe through their charity partner Emirates Red Crescent. We met Dr Shambavi Rajagopal to find 12 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
out more about her journey on a path where some selfless souls march ahead boldly to give back to society and achieve a sense of fulfilment: How Did You Begin With Charity Work? The day I sent the message to the WhatsApp group explaining how we can save the scrap, we were five people ready with roughly 5 kilograms of scrap material with us. We started sorting, cutting, sewing. I had one idea that I want to make things of utility which anyone can use. So we started making sheets, bags and pillows, which only need threads and our own machines. We do not want to make dresses which would need more skills, and extra material costs, and will also intimidate people who don’t know how to sew to look at our social media pages and get demotivated that they cannot do it. How Did You Get More People To Join You? I made a Facebook page and started to add #connectordubai
CONNECTOR CHAMPIONS posts on our work on every day basis. And that’s how I started to get in touch with various women groups, and we got calls from mums, so many senior citizens who come here on visit, wanted to keep themselves occupied. We also got our website made in February 2016, where people send us requests to join our buddy programs, and we also update each and everything we create and donate to keep the process as transparent as we can. Did You Ever Think Of Monetising The Project? It is a low cost model, and since beginning only I decided that whatever we will make, we want to give away. I do get offers from companies, but we do not entertain those offers. The thought is clear when people need a sheet, we want to give them sheets and not money instead. We are so many people working and sharing same passion about the project, the day money is involved, there will be a conflict. How Did You Partner With Emirates Red Crescent? Everyone used to scare me that you are doing something and no one knows about it, you may get in trouble for that. So, one day I took a sheet, bag and pillow and went to Islamic Affair Department, and told them what we are doing it and making it from scrap. We do not sell anything. Their response was “ok good.” When I insisted that we are looking for some kind of official approval, she gave me a list of charities and asked me to obtain a license from any of them. That’s how we got in touch with officials from Emirates Red Crescent who issued us a license and renew it every three months. The process was very smooth and did not involve any cost at all. www.connector.ae
How Do You Source The Scrap Material? Whosoever joins the group can source it from any boutique they know. We cannot cope with huge amounts of scrap as we do not have space to store the scrap. So even when you have 5 kilograms of scrap, it takes two months to use the scrap and build things out of it. Roughly, we are in contact with 15 boutiques and tailoring shops but we are not limited to those. What Kind Of Costs Do You Bear Running The Project? It’s not a lot. Sometimes transportation costs from going to the host’s house in Dubai or other Emirates, and thread and label-making costs. We encourage people to make groups and meet once a week at a place within walkable distance from their houses, so they do not spend money on transportation. Then we have a website, which my brother sponsors as part of his contribution to the project. How Can Anyone Join The Initiative? Send us a message through our Facebook page Save Scrap and Sew @SSSbuddies or our website www.savescrapnsew.com and we will make sure that we get in touch with interested people and make them a part of the process. Can People Who Don’t Know How To Sew Join? No there are not any conditions, anyone with a will to contribute can join it. They can cut, iron and can learn sewing with us from us. They only need to bring along their will to serve. If you are interested in finding our more about Save Scrap and Sew visit www.savescrapnsew.com CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 13

THE REVIEW
Aya at City Walk
T here seems to be no stopping popular Dubai chef Izu Ani these days as he adds another concept to Dubai’s expanding dining scene. The latest venture Aya opened towards the end of last year and is located in the bustling City Walk, taking the space that previously housed Galvin. Aya, which means wonderful in Arabic, is a Japanese restaurant that adds a unique twist to its dishes. The menu, put together with head chef Christopher Blake, who joined from Dubai’s Zuma, is based on a sharing concept including mezzes, buns, rolls and mains. To start we shared the short rib gyoza, which were full of meat, along with the surf and turf rolls with shrimp and topped with pieces of tasty wagyu beef, the Padron peppers with a beautiful seasoning of kombu salt which we could not stop picking at, the crispy calamari which were delicately fried, with a light but crispy coating, and the burnt tomato panzanella, an absolutely delicious dish, full of flavours, very refreshing with a nice hint of ginger. We could not continue without trying one of the rolls and our choice of wagyu katsu sando was spot on. A chunk of the www.connector.ae
juiciest 9+ wagyu beef, with a crispy coating and Aya’s own barbecue sauce, served in between two slices of the softest Hokkaido milk bread. If you have to choose just one item from the menu, and I hope you never do, then this is certainly the one. For mains we shared the very tender and tasty Spanish octopus served with coriander emulsion, and accompanied it with probably the sweetest sweetcorn gratin we have ever tasted and bite sized baby potatoes, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy in the middle with a perfect truffle butter. As filling as all the dishes were, there is always room to finish with dessert and we ended the meal with Japanese cheesecake, a light and fluffy cake topped with a generous serving of smooth caramel and bergamot cream. Chef Izu has come up with another great concept that further demonstrates how local talent is good enough to add quality to Dubai’s dining scene. Expect to pay around Dhs 400 per person not including drinks. Call 04-3433330. CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 37

KIDS & EDUCATION
Why a qualified nursery teacher
is key to a child's early learning
F or any nursery, investing in trained staff is a must. Nursery teachers are those strong pillars who boost your child’s growth in their early years. It becomes crucial for parents to know that they are sending their children to the right place and to the right people. Here we discuss the role of a nursery teacher in the growth and development of children with the help of the experts themselves. How Does A Qualified Nursery Teacher Help In The Growth Of A Child? A qualified nursery teacher helps facilitate a child’s growth and development in seven distinct areas involving their personal and social growth. Also, parents feel more confident when they know that a well trained teacher is looking after their child. Esther Hunter, Principal, Raffles Starters/ Raffles Nurseries, at Innoventures Education says, “The role of a nursery teacher or early years practitioner is a skilful balance www.connector.ae
of care, support, education and sensitivity. Early years practitioners facilitate children’s growth and development, even for babies, through understanding and observing each child’s learning, assessing progress made and planning for next steps. Practitioners understand that every child is unique and respond to this individuality in order to support children to become resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. Early years practitioners foster positive relationships with children which nurture a sense of self and belonging to the wider group. The relationship between practitioners and parents is also vitally important to the successful early years experience and parents are significant stakeholders in the learning journey.” "Research also endorses that qualified early childhood professionals accelerate how children learn, develop, and build their social skills necessary to get along with others and succeed in school and life. Moreover, qualified nursery staff are better positioned to give CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 39
KIDS & EDUCATION an appropriate feedback to the parents, covering all developmental goals when assessing the child’s progress”, says Dr Vandana Gandhi, Founder and CEO of British Orchard Nursery. Sian Pascoe, FS1 teacher at GEMS Royal Dubai School says, “Nursery teachers prepare educational lessons, provide hands-on learning experiences and activities which enable them to develop and grow both academically and socially. Within the early years setting a nursery teacher will provide opportunities for children to grow and develop across 7 areas including: personal social and emotional, physical, communication and language, numeracy, literacy, knowledge and understanding of the world and expressive arts and design." What Training Does A Nursery Teacher Implement In A Typical Day? Each day teachers plan stimulating and engaging activities in the classroom and outside which challenge the child’s knowledge and understanding and build on the concrete skills they already have. Sian Pascoe of GEMS Royal Dubai School says, “In a typical day in FS1 (nursery) the children are welcomed each day into an atmosphere of care and security. The children will learn daily rules and routines, teachers will guide them to eat and drink 40 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
during snack times and support them with their bathroom needs and washing their hands. As the children progress they will become a lot more independent during daily routines. Teachers will model behaviours to the children such as taking turns, sharing and being kind to our friends. The children will come to sit on the carpet for ‘circle time’ where they will learn to follow instructions, sit quietly and listen to adults and other children around them. They will be encouraged to talk to share their thoughts and ideas and join in with a variety of songs, stories and rhymes. Through carpet time and continuous provision the children will be encouraged to develop their learning in 7 areas: • Personal, social and emotional The children will learn social skills and develop an understanding of their different feelings and how to manage them. • Physical - The children will get to play outdoors where they have the opportunity to improve their coordination and motor skills also develop their fine motors skills to enable them to hold a pencil correctly and develop writing skills. • Communication and language - Children will learn to express themselves and speak and listen to develop their language and communication skills. #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION • Numeracy - Through interactive songs and games children will develop skills with numbers and explore different shapes, spaces, and measures. • Literacy - Children will explore stories and rhymes. • Knowledge and understanding of the world - Children will be given opportunities to make sense of things by observing and exploring. • Expressive arts and design Children will engage in activities such as drawing, painting, instruments or role play to express themselves and learn new things. • Continuous provision, both inside and outdoors - Through continuous provision the nursery teacher is able to model learning and play alongside the children, extending the children’s learning even further. Continuous provision also enables children to return to their explorations and consolidate their learning. Children will also have the opportunity to attend specialised lessons such as PE, swimming and Arabic.” Carrie Hoza, Principal of Dubai British Foundation says, “A good nursery teacher should be a very busy lady! She should see your child and each member of the class www.connector.ae
as an individual. She should know their development and how that relates to their next step. She should then carefully plan individual lessons that support and guide each child to reach their full potential through fun, engaging and play-based activities. She should use her knowledge of child development to know when a child is not achieving their developmental goals and when a child is exceeding. She should use the strengths of each child to support the class as a whole to celebrate their similarities and differences. She should be modelling the highest quality of language in order for the children to have the best example from which to learn.” What Questions Should Parents Ask A Nursery Teacher? Questions can vary from parent to parent, however covering a broad spectrum, every parent should ask a nursery teacher questions on how to prepare children at home for nursery, how the nursery will communicate the child’s development to parents, is there a toilet training programme, what food to pack and the day to day learning programmes. Ask as many questions as you can and always believe in your instinct. Carrie Hoza of Dubai British Foundation says, “Going to see a school’s early years setting or a nursery is key. Go, get a feel, CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 41
KIDS & EDUCATION walk round and imagine your child in the setting. Take your child with you if possible, so they can get a feel too. After all, they are going to be the ones there! When walking round listen to the person showing you round and ask as many questions as you can. Do not be afraid to take a paper and pen to write notes to remind yourselves later." Dr Vandana Gandhi of British Orchard Nursery says, “Generally, parents should be concerned with the important policies of health and safety, the curriculum followed, observation and assessment methodology, extra-curricular activities and of course the teacher’s qualification and experience. However, every child is different, so meeting the child carer will help them ascertain what they feel is most important for their child.” Esther Hunter of Raffles Starters/Raffles Nurseries says, “The most valuable aspect of choosing a nursery for your child is trust. If you believe in the values of the nursery, the learning style suits your child, you feel comfortable with the team and you can trust your most precious little one with them, then you have found the best fit nursery for your family!”

Teacher Training Programme At A Glance There are different teaching courses available, however any good Teacher Training Programme should have course contents which will give the teacher the skills to teach your child. “A CACHE course covers themes of Health and well-being, legislation, frameworks and professional practice, play, development and learning for school readiness and a nursery placement. This qualification can be gained by anyone over the age of 16 years. A PGCE or teaching degree covers these areas and more detail into the development of individuals with more directly observed teaching placements and all participants must hold higher education qualifications before joining the course. This means that these qualifications provide a more robust model for teacher training. CACHE qualifications are awarded by the Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education. Or even better, a teaching degree such as a PGCE or Degree in Childhood Education. With these qualifications you know that your child’s teacher has studied the development of children and how to use this information to teach your child in the most effective way”, says Carrie Hoza of Dubai British Foundation.

ADVISE FROM THE EXPERT-HEALTHBAY
P
What is Periodontal Disease
eriodontitis, also generally called gum disease or periodontal disease, begins with bacterial growth in the mouth and if not treated properly may lead to tooth loss due to destruction of the tissue that surrounds teeth. It is possible to have periodontal disease without apparent symptoms. Some research suggest Periodontal disease may be passed between couples and from parents to children through saliva. Signs of Gum Disease are: • Bleeding gums • Red, swollen gums • Pus between teeth and gums • Loose or separating gums • Bad breath or bad taste in mouth • Change of position of teeth and loose teeth What causes Periodontal Disease? Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. Our mouth is filled with a great number of bacteria. When certain bacteria in plaque produce toxins that can lead to gum inflammation and that inflammation can damage the gum and bone attachment to the tooth. However, other factors can contribute to periodontal disease. These include: • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, puberty, menopause, and monthly menstruation, make gums more sensitive, which makes it easier for gingivitis to develop. • Illnesses may affect the condition of gums. This includes diseases such as cancer or HIV. • Medications can affect oral health, because some lessen the flow of saliva, which has a protective effect on teeth and gums. • Poor oral hygiene habits such as not brushing and flossing on a make it easier for gingivitis to develop. MOH NO: WO33572
48 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
• Bad habits such as smoking make it harder for gum tissue to repair itself. Factors that increase the risk of Periodontal Disease: • Smoking and chewing tobacco • Certain medications such as cancer therapy drugs and steroids • Systemic diseases such as diabetes and HIV infections • Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, puberty and oral contraceptives • Genetics How can Periodontal disease be prevented? Good oral hygiene practice can help reduce the chances of periodontal disease. • Brush twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste • Flossing twice a day • Drinking lots of water • Eating a balance diet • Regular dental visits • Know your risk. Age, smoking, diet and genetics can all increase your risk for periodontal disease. If you are at increased risk, be sure to talk with your dental professional. Dr. Arezu Zara Akhavan

HEALTH & WELLBEING
The importance of
dental health check-ups
I f you think that a dental check-up is restricted to just cavities and general teeth and gum health check-up, then think again. The scope is much wider and it covers a full mouth, tongue, throat, face, head and neck check-up to detect any possible disease related directly or indirectly to your oral health. Dr Zamen Al Janabi, GP Dentist and Head of Department at Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “A dental health check-up will comprise of two stages, the examination and the prophylaxis. At the dental check-up your dental professional might take X-rays to detect cavities between your teeth. Also, the dentist checks for plaque and tartar on your teeth and remove them if found, because if plaque and tartar build-up on your teeth, they can cause oral diseases. The gum will be checked using a special tool to measure the depth of the spaces between the teeth and gum.” He further adds, “During the check-up, www.connector.ae
the dentist should also include a careful examination of the tongue, throat, face, head, and neck. If any oral health problems are found during the examination, they will recommend the treatment.” Dr Zara Arezu Akhavan, Cosmetics and General Dentist at HealthBay says, “Dental check-ups are a critical part of preventive health care. On your first visit to a dentist, they will take a full health history. Comprehensive dental exams not only check for tooth caries and gum health but also to examine your entire mouth, soft tissue, gingiva, tongue, occlusion, head and neck area for abnormalities. Your dentist will discuss your diet and oral hygiene habits and will demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques.“ Why Dental Health Check-Ups Are Important? Dental appointments shouldn’t just be made when you have a problem that needs CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 49
HEALTH & WELLBEING to be addressed. Prevention is always better than needing a cure. Here’s why experts think it’s a must: Dr Nuno Sarmento General Dentist at Dubai London Clinic says, “A regular dental check up is important because they help keep your teeth and gums healthy. You should have a regular dental visit at least every 6 months or as recommended by your dental professional.” Dr Mohammed Sarris, General Dentist at Mediclinic City Hospital says, “It allows the dentist to discover any problems that may potentially be present. Dental problems often can be a sign of underlying health issues elsewhere in the body so it is important to discover and treat any problems early. Problems discovered late usually means more complex and costly treatment.” Dr Mahmoud Fawzi, General Dentistry at Emirates Specialty Hospital says, “Even with the most diligent daily brushers and flossers, there are still small areas in the mouth that are missed by a regular brushing and flossing. When plaque builds up it becomes more difficult to remove, solidifying and turning into tartar, which is extremely difficult to get rid of without professional help. Regular dental cleaning prevent tartar from eroding teeth or creating holes in them, which is how cavities are created. Cavities rarely give any warning signs as they form, only resulting in a small ache once the tooth is already decayed. 50 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
Once the damage has been done, you will have to go back to the dentist to have cavities and other tooth problems filled and fixed. This can all be avoided with regular cleaning that take care of plaque and tartar before it becomes destructive.” What Is The Right Age To Start Dental Health Check-Ups? It is best to encourage children to attend from a young age preferably when the first baby teeth have apeared. It helps the children get accustomed to visiting the dentist, reducing any fears or anxiety about the visits. They are then more likely to visit the dentist on a regular basis which would be beneficial in the long run. Regular dental check-ups every six months is recommended. Dr Neil Mitchell of Dr Roze and Associate says, “The current generally agreed guidelines say your child should begin regular check-ups somewhere between when the first tooth erupts in the mouth to no later than age 18 months. The first visits are more about getting your child used to trips to the dentist and acclimatising to the people, sights and sounds that are there. Starting early usually makes for stress free visits later and gives you time to ask all the questions you may have about your child's dental health.” Dr Sameh Atallah, Dental Surgeon and Implantologist at Allied Medical Center in Dubai says, “The recommended age #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING to start the regular dental check up is as early as 6 months of age after the first tooth erupts and no later than the first birthday." Commenting on what to expect on your child’s first visit to the dentist, Dr Mahmoud Fawzi of Emirates Specialty Hospital says, “You can take your child at a younger age, but experts recommend taking him or her within 6 months of the first tooth coming in, or by about 12 months at the latest. At this time, the dentist can give you information on baby bottle tooth decay, infant feeding practices, mouth cleaning, teething, pacifier habits and finger-sucking habits.” What Are The Possible Implications Of Not Going For Regular Dental Health Check-Ups? Prevention is always better than cure, and it is very well implied here. When you do not visit your dentist, you may need a rather painful treatment later for the problems you did not deal with in their early stages, or even missed the chance to prevent them altogether. Dr Zamen Al Janabi of Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “During regular dental check-ups, the dentist cleans the teeth and removes plaque and tartar. By skipping these appointments, bacteria will flourish and attack the teeth and gums and cause bad breath, gum diseases and decay that may require extensive restorations such as a root canal or crown.” www.connector.ae
Dr Zara Arezu Akhavan of HealthBay says, “There are also many bad habits that you may not even be aware can have a negative impact on your oral health. Some of these habits include chewing ice, biting your nails, clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth, eating particularly sticky or hard sweets, brushing your teeth too hard, drinking coffee and red wine, and smoking. When you go for regular dental check-ups, your dentist can check for any oral damage caused by these or other habits which you may otherwise not have noticed. Being informed about specific destructive habits allows you to change or alter your lifestyle choice to prevent further damage." Dr Neil Mitchell of Dr Roze and Associate added, “Recent studies show that regular attendants pay up to 30% less than those who visited only when they had a problem over a ten year period.” How To Look After Your Dental Health At Home? Some of the top home care tips as advised by the experts include: 1. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss between the teeth to remove dental plaque. 2. Drink fluoridated water and brush with fluoride toothpaste. Spit out after brushing and do not rinse, so that the fluoride stays on your teeth longer 3. Change your toothbrush every three months. CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 51
HEALTH & WELLBEING 4. Avoid tobacco and alcohol 5. Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grain foods as healthy snacks, and keep the sugary drinks to a minimum - they are among the factors that can promote tooth decay. 6. Avoid food between meals and limit acidic drinks and sugary food. 7. Avoid using your teeth for anything other than chewing food. 8. Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Dental Care For Children Parents need to be a little more cautious while developing good dental care habits in their children. Here’s what experts have to say: Dr Zara Arezu Akhavan of HealthBay says, “The AAP recommends that, after a feeding, parents wipe a baby’s gums with a soft washcloth or a baby toothbrush using water only - no toothpaste. You could also use a dentist-recommended cleanser. When a child’s first tooth appears, parents should brush their child’s teeth for two minutes twice a day and switch to a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush with
52 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
a cushioned head, and a pea-sized dab of non-fluoridated toothpaste. Children two and older should use fluoridated toothpaste and they should brush their own teeth. Parents, however, should still follow up and brush them again to make sure they’re clean. If a child resists having his or her teeth brushed, parents need to get creative and make the process fun. Supervise your child’s brushing until good habits are established. Most children don’t have the manual dexterity for thorough teeth cleaning until they are about 7 years old. Until then, help your child brush and floss. Let them 'do it themselves' first, and then follow up by helping them brush and floss again.” Dr Mahmoud Fawzi of Emirates Specialty Hospital says, “Brushing should start as soon as the first primary tooth erupts. Children under three years should use no more than a smear of toothpaste - a thin film of paste covering less than three quarters of the brush - and must not be permitted to eat or lick toothpaste from the tube.”

alentine's day is around the corner and most of us have already made plans to go the extra mile for that someone special. But how many of us have done that for ourselves in a long time? This February, Dr. Arun Asok Cheriyan, Specialist Cardiologist at Aster Clinic, Bur Dubai is encouraging you to show your heart some extra love. In developed countries or fast paced cities where there's easy access to fast food, it is no less of a task to keep track of what you are eating. What's even harder, is for your heart to keep up. With a major shift in lifestyle and daily routines, one tends to overlook the care and attention given to one of the most important organs in the body. Many health conditions and lifestyle choices contribute to cardiovascular diseases like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. A sedentary lifestyle, smoking and unhealthy diets also add pressure on your body and heart. However, cardiovascular conditions can often be prevented if you make healthy choices. Making an effort to exercise daily and drastically cutting down on certain types of food can make a sea of change in your life and health. Replace foods like canned food, processed and frozen meals with a diet rich in fish and flax seeds rich in omega 3, phytonutrient rich berries, oatmeal filled with fiber and vitamins, carrots, sweet potatoes and red peppers, oranges and papaya rich in potassium and magnesium go a long way in ensuring that your heart and body gets the best of nature’s produce. Controlling and minimizing the intake of salt can help in keeping blood pressure in check too.

Undergoing regular health check-ups play a key role in monitoring and finding potential health issues before they pose risks. If you have been diagnosed with a heart condition, ensure that you stay healthy by going for regular health checks, use support equipment like BP and glucose monitors to monitor your health regularly, and introduce supplement essentials formulated from the best ingredients. It goes without saying that changes to lifestyle and diet are also key to living a longer and healthier life. As always, ensure that you speak to your doctor before starting any medications, diet or supplements. Getting your skin looking
young and fresh again
T he cool sun in Dubai during these first months of the year is a perfect time to work on resurfacing, glowing, refreshing and healthy skin treatments to get off that old summer skin which can be stuck stubborn on the surface, leaving your skin looking prematurely old and dull. In this feature we have discussed some of the top cosmetic treatments and home care tips to keep the shine on your pretty face. Dr Myrna El Shareef, Dermatology Specialist at Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “The treatments indicated for every patient depend on their particular problems that need to be addressed. What is the age of the patient? What are the main concerns? Is the patient’s skin dry, oily or combination? Does the patient have acne, wrinkles, pigmentation etc? So the top five dermatology treatments for one patient will definitely differ from those for another patient.” 54 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
Here are the top six dermatological treatments popular among residents to achieve a young and healthy looking skin: 1. Dermal Fillers Used for aesthetic purposes to add volume to a client’s face, this is the best procedure for diminishing wrinkles and skin folds. The charm of dermal fillers is that it is quick and pain free with results that last to about 10 to 12 months. As per your need, it can be injected into cheeks, lips or around the eyes. 2. Botox As fillers are used to add volume to the face, botox is used to diminish wrinkles as well, most performed on the forehead and around the eyes. It temporarily relaxes the facial muscles. Depending on the problem area being treated, this may last three months or longer. #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING 3. Platelet Rich Plasma Dr Luvi Kaprani, General Manager at Arya Clinic says, “The most trending dermatological procedure is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), commonly known as vampire facial. It is a cosmetic procedure that is used primarily for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. The most beautiful thing about this technique is that it is completely natural as it involves extraction of client’s own blood and then centrifuging it. Not only is this indicated for almost all skin conditions, it is also less time consuming than most dermatological procedures used in the clinics. It is one of the safest techniques with long-lasting results and providing total rejuvenation.” 4. Non-Surgical Thread Lift For The Face This treatment is gaining in popularity as it is also called as “lunch hour facelift”, relating it to being performed in as short as an hour, with less pain and minimal downtime. Thread lift basically uses fine threads or sutures that help contour the face as per the problem area detected. The reason why this is becoming very renowned is because it lasts longer than any of the aesthetic procedures commonly performed in the clinics. 5. Light Chemical Peels A light chemical peel removes the outer layer of skin. It is used to treat fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. One can have a light chemical www.connector.ae
peel as often as every two to five weeks depending on the desired results. Ann Persson, Medical Aesthetician at The Private Clinic says, “I can warmly recommend light peels over a couple of sessions. What is so good with these light peels is that they have no down time! The skin specialist will precisely examine your skin and customises which peel would suit your skin best, depending on your skin type and wishes.” Dr Ahmed Rihan, Dermatology Specialist at Zo Skin Centre by Zein Obagi Jumeirah Branch says, “Chemical peels a personal favourite, improve the skin's appearance in terms of wrinkles due to sun damage, aging, mild scars, acne, age spots, freckles and melasma. A relatively old school treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin forming 'blisters' and eventually peel off leaving smoother, less wrinkled and rejuvenated skin. It is crucial that your skin should be prepared with certain products to ensure safe and effective results.” Smita Sonavane, beauty and laser therapist at Cocoona says, “Skin peeling systems chemical peels as well as laser peeling - could be effectively and safely used in this weather as the advantage is ther is less sun exposure.” 6. Microneedling Microneedling is a dermaroller procedure that uses small needles to prick the skin. Microneedling is mostly used on the face and may treat various scars, wrinkles, and large pores. CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 55
HEALTH & WELLBEING Ann Persson of The Private Clinic says, “The purpose of the procedure is to enhance the blood circulation, strengthen the collagen production and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. It will reduce wrinkles, diminish scarring, and tighten or rejuvenate loose or aging skin. Can even be used around the eyes to reduce dark circles, pigmentation and eye puffiness.” Home Remedies For Skin Care If you do not act responsibly for your own skin, no treatment can do magic for you. Even if a treatment performs magic on your skin, it is still very important to look after your skin at home on a daily basis, and here are some top tips from the experts: Healthy Diet Dr Myrna El Shareef of Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “Healthy skin starts from within. I always stress that a healthy diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants, as well as adequate exercise are key for a healthy looking skin. No amount of home remedies will fix problems caused by smoking, poor diet and lifestyle.” Dr Ahmed Rihan of Zo Skin Centre says, “A balanced diet consisting of plant based diet and fruits are essential for great skin. Avoid high fat, fried, sugary foods and try to shift to more organic foods free of preservatives.” Turmeric Face Mask Dr Luvi Kaprani of Arya Clinic says, “If you’ve ever paid heed to your grandma’s 56 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
stories, you would have heard of turmeric and its soothing effect to get a glowing skin. It is a very effective antioxidant that helps enhance the skin complexion and rejuvenation for dull skin.” Fruit Face Mask Dr Luvi Kaprani of Arya Clinic says, “Never forget the benefits of your favourite fruits. You can make a simple homemade face mask mashing together banana, papaya and mixing them with a tablespoon of cream. Add a few drops of lemon and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse this with warm water and apply once per week. Also, try this unique combination of potato, honey and rose water. Grate the potatoes and mix with a teaspoon of honey and few drops of water. Leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse with cold water. It is safe to be used daily or alternate days.” Gram Flour Pack For Oily Skin Dr Luvi Kaprani of Arya Clinic says, “If you have oily skin and want the instant glow, the best combination would be gram flour with rose water. You need to mix both together in form of a paste and apply it along with rubbing onto your face in circular motion.” Cleanse Your Face Regularly Ann Persson of The Private Clinic says, “Dirt, oil and pollution particles can clog and cause dullness, wash your face morning and night by massaging your favourite facial wash with fingers in circular motions, #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING working from the inside of the face out for full coverage. Over washing can lead to irritation and a lack of moisture. The rule is to use common sense: Always wash your face after a workout to prevent breakouts, and wash excessively oily skin morning and night.” Hydrate Your Skin Ann Persson of The Private Clinic says, “Drink at least 1.5 litres of water every day if you do sports double it up. Spoil your skin with hydrating serums and hydrating masks and always finish up your skin routine with SPF with both UVA and UVB protection. Even oily skin needs hydration - sometimes the skin breaks out just because of lack of hydration. If you have an oily skin don't be afraid to hydrate.” Cleaning, Exfoliating And Toning Dr Ahmed Rihan of Zo Skin Centre says, “Proper medical grade skin care starting from the basics facial cleansers, exfoliating scrubs and toners are the essentials of proper skin care. type and quality should be examined by your dermatologist to help ensure which products are right for you.” Retinol Creams For Anti-Ageing Skincare Dr Ahmed Rihan of Zo Skin Centre says, “Vitamin A derivatives such as retinoic acid and retinol are crucial in proper or anti-aging skin care. When used consistently it can dramatically improve the look and condition of any skin type. It helps to resurface your skin, encourages collagen production, combats free radicals that damage skin cells and delay the aging process." Sun Protection Dr Ahmed Rihan of Zo Skin Centre adds, “Sun protection is the most vital product in any skincare routine regardless whether outdoors or indoors. The sun’s rays contain ultraviolet (UV) photons. These UV photons are invisible to the naked eye, but cause severe damage to the skin.”

Yoga Mamas:
transitioning to motherhood with tranquility
O
h baby! You are having a baby. Congratulations! This is one of the most magical moments of your life; it is a beautiful journey filled with a mix of beautiful and intense emotions. Take a deep breath in and out and don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of available information out there about doctors, doulas, hypnobirthing professionals etc. Walk on this path one step at a time. Yousra Diab, pre and post natal yoga teacher shares a few tips that can help you achieve some tranquillity along the way: Do Yoga: Either you are a spiritual person or not, prenatal yoga will prepare you for birth through customised exercises tailored to different stages of pregnancy to potentially lead you to a positive birth experience. The classes are designed to make you gain strength and flexibility with a focus on pelvic floor health. Similarly, post natal yoga takes you back through the journey of rediscovering your new self and gradually transitions you back in shape and back to your exercise (or regular yoga) routine. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Motherhood is a journey filled with complex emotions. Acknowledge 62 FEBRUARY CONNECTOR
and accept how you feel without any judgement or labelling. If you do end up with a birth experience that you didn’t dream of, remind yourself that motherhood is precious no matter how your baby came into the world. Join A Community: It is very important to join a community with the mamas and mamas to be who are on the same journey, to exchange information and share experiences. Positive Thoughts: We are our thoughts. Always have positive affirmations and thoughts regarding your pregnancy, upcoming birth and motherhood. I would highly recommend enrolling in a hypnobirthing course towards your third trimester because it highly prepares you to whichever birth experience you might have. Input from Yousra Diab, Pre and Post Natal Yoga Teacher at Urban Yoga Dubai and 500 hours RYT. A perfect facial for ageing skin L ocated at Le Meridian Hotel and Conference Centre on Airport Road, Natural Elements Spa and Fitness offers a wide range of face and body treatments using premium skin care products from Pevonia-Botanica. Known for its tranquil environment and excellent spa menu selection, the spa spread across a vast area features nine treatment rooms and separate sections for men and women. We arrive at the spa property to review their latest offering of NE Signature Face Lifting Treatment. We meet the therapist Patitta at the reception, who whisks us off to the changing room and asks us to wait in the relaxation room once we change into the robe. As we sip our welcome drink, the therapist explains the facial steps and asks us if we have gone thorough any cosmetic treatment such as botox or filler, as it is not possible to have the facial for at least one and half months. Also a woman in the first trimester is also not allowed this new facial. We do not fall in any of these categories, so we move to the therapy room to get the 45-minute www.connector.ae
facial from the expert therapist. The therapy room is compact, cosy and has all the facilities you would expect, including a bath section inside it. The facial begins with cleansing and scrubbing of the face. Then, with aromatherapy oil, Pattita gently gives us a relaxing face, shoulder and back massage. Now comes the main part; the therapist gives a deep tissue massage to all the facial muscles, including jaw, temple and cheekbone. The pressure is hard and is a little painful. Nonetheless, the therapist is gentle and gives short breaks in between to breathe in. The massage helps to tighten the skin's shape, restore muscle position, detox and improve circulation, resulting in a more radiant complexion. The treatment ends with a relaxing face mask for ten minutes. The massage is highly recommended for those who are looking for complete skin rejuvenation. Both young and ageing skins can expect amazing results. Priced at Dhs 350. Call 04-7022430. CONNECTOR FEBRUARY 63
