EDITOR’S NOTE It is not everyone who can experience a tragedy in their life and turn that into a positive, but Dubai resident Shared Ballam did just that. Four years ago Shahad was the victim of a road traffic accident caused by speeding and since recovering, has set up a program to raise awareness of the implications of speeding, by encouraging speeding. We met up with Shahad to get first hand on why she chose to do this and where the program is going. Read what she told us on pages 12 and 13. Another growing concern that we face that can be overcome is obesity and it is important to start reversing and preventing it at a young age. We all know how easy it is to fall into bad habits and allow children to eat food and treats that could lead to obesity, and experts tell us on pages 48 to 51 what the risks to children are, but as importantly, how we can reduce them. There's a lot more in this issue including a run down of some of Dubai’s vegan burgers, some hot spots to host your children’s birthday and some brunch ideas for your own celebrations. With so much going on in Dubai, it is easy to miss some of the most interesting and important updates and announcements. Here is a round-up of some of this month's news for Dubai.
World's First Human Autonomous Flight In Dubai Dubai based Jetman is made headlines for the world’s first 100 per cent autonomous human flight. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, took to his Instagram profile @faz3 to post a video where Jetman pilot Vince Reffet can be seen successfully launching into the air from the runway of Skydive Dubai and flying up to an altitude of 1,800 metres. The milestone project has been accomplished with the support from Expo 2020 Dubai. Reffet was equipped with a carbon fibre wing powered by four mini jet engines. Controlled by the human body, the equipment enables Jetman to reach speeds of 400kmh, as well as hovering, changing direction and performing loops.
Travelling at an average speed of 240kmh, he climbed 100 metres in the air in eight seconds, 200 metres in 12 seconds, 500 metres in 19 seconds and 1,000 metres in 30 seconds. Three engineers - Mohammed Rashid Chembankandy from India, André Bernet from Switzerland and chief engineer Matthieu Courtois from France - developed the pioneering technology that helped make the flight possible. Mission: Human Flight has also been training Ahmed Alshehhi, the first Emirati Jetman, as the UAE prepares to welcome 192 nations and millions of global visitors for Expo 2020 Dubai.
Free Entry At This Waterpark
As the weather starts to heat-up, it is a perfect time to hit a waterpark and ths one in particular has a great offer for this month. Laguna Waterpark at La Mer will be running a limited-period ‘Kids go free’ promotion on every Sunday thorugh to Thursday from 1 March until 26 March. Children accompanied by a paying adult will get a free entry to the park filled with adventurous rides and fun educational experiences. The park is divided into four distinct zones Surf, Relax, Slide and Splash and features a wide range of activities covring the interests of children, toddlers and adults alike. The offer also includes unlimited re-entry plus direct beach access to the pristine La Mer beach from 10am to 6pm. VAT Refunds Available At Dubai Mall
100 Per Cent Discount Scheme Is Back Dubai Police has announced that their 100% discount initiative launched last year will
continue to benefit motorists in 2020 as well. In February 2019, the Dubai Police launched an initiative to give discounts on traffic fines if motorists do not commit any violations for a certain period. As per the initiative, if motorists do not commit a violation for three months, they get a 25% discount, no violation for six months means a 50% discount, a nine-month violation-free drive will get motorists a 75% discount and a 100% discount if motorists do not commit any violations for a full year. In the last year, a total of 557,430 motorists have benefited from this scheme. Dubai Police gave a total discount of Dhs 546,970,930 collectively. One Emirati housewife got her traffic fines amounting to Dhs 150,000 waived off as part of the Dubai Police traffic fines discount initiative. Dubai Police has also recorded a decline in traffic deaths by 16% and a 38% decrease in major injuries.
Adding to the convenience for visitors, The Dubai Mall, in partnership with international payments service provider Planet, has launched a pre-validation VAT refund pilot service called ‘City Validation’. Visitors to The Dubai Mall can now benefit from a hassle-free option to claim their VAT refunds as they shop at Dubai's biggest mall. Seven self-service kiosks have been set up across The Dubai Mall for shoppers to claim the VAT refund on their shopping. Visitors need to simply present a valid boarding pass, their original passport or GCC national ID which was used for tax-free shopping, the original receipts and tax-free tags issued by the store (which must be validated within 90 days from the date of tag issuance). Instructions on the kiosks will guide tourists to complete the validation process enabling them to claim a VAT refund which can be processed onto a credit card, debit card, WeChat or for cash.
Saudi Arabia Expands Visa On Arrival The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has introduced a one-year multiple entry visit visa on arrival for Pakistan and Indian passport holders as well as for those who have valid UK, US or Schengen visas. The new visa on arrival allows visitors to perform Umrah, however, it does not allow them to perform Haj. The fee for the on-arrival visa is Dhs 431 and needs to be paid through a credit card at the airport. Cash is not accepted. Visitors can stay in Saudi Arabia for 90 days at a time and can enter the country multiple times during the validity period of their visa. www.connector.ae

Most of us will know someone who has been the victim of speeding on roads. But do we know someone who has turned their experiences of the accident into a positive?
N
ow there is someone who is trying to bring a change. This person, once a victim of speeding on the road, is asking drivers to 'speed up' to feel the adrenaline rush and to feel the power of control. However, the twist is she is asking them to ‘Speed Legally’ on professional tracks under strict supervision, which will give the driver the much-needed thrill without putting the lives of others at risk. Connector met with Shahad Ballan, the MBC1 presenter, who has started a new campaign named ’Speed Legally’ to bring more awareness on the dangers of speeding. Here’s what she has to say: Please Explain Your Campaign #SpeedLegally, And How You Developed The Idea From Scratch? I overcame a life-changing accident around four years ago. Ever since I decided that there needed to be more awareness about speeding. I spent a challenging time recovering and watching my loved ones around me getting impacted. As soon as I recovered, I knew that every negative incident can be turned around and used positively and thus started my journey to raising more 12 MARCH CONNECTOR
awareness. Not necessarily bad, but speeding is off limits on the roads. I think, as a society, we need to address the importance of safe speed limits a bit more. My campaign #SpeedLegally with Dubai Autodrome, who are Dubai’s first fully integrated multipurpose motorsports and entertainment complex, focused on speeding contained to race tracks only. As I said, I believe speeding isn’t bad, it can be a good sport, an adrenaline rush, but as long as we do it responsibly, keeping in mind that our roads are not race tracks. The thought behind my campaign is to raise awareness about the consequences of speeding, overtaking, and not abiding by the traffic rules and regulations on the road. I want people to know that there is a place for them to speed, to drive for the fun of it; but our roads are not for speeding. You are around other people, safety of your own health and those of others around you on the road in very important. What Is The One Big Challenge To Running This Campaign And Sending The Right Massage Across? The biggest challenge has to be making people #connectordubai
CONNECTOR CHAMPIONS really believe and care about it. All people know that speeding on roads is not okay but seldom do they realise the hazards. I think each one of us has had a personal experience or can relate to a friend or relative’s experience with road accidents, yet we forget it the next minute. Our roads and infrastructure are made with the best possible standards here in the UAE, yet why do we see so many accidents? Everyone knows how it can affect negatively but now everyone thinks about doing better or speaking about it. My main aim was for people to think about it at least and become more aware when they are on roads, they are not alone but have other people around them. Responsibility is everything. During Your Talks With People On Why People Speed Up, Were There Any Answers That Were Shocking And ‘Unreasonable’? Yes and no. Most people took it well because it came from me and I have an incident that I address from my own life. People want to understand and feel what I am trying to say, which has been great. However, there are some who argue that ‘what has to happen will happen’ or something along the lines of ‘everything happens for a reason’. While I do of course agree to the quotes, I fail to use these as an excuse. We live in cities, with infrastructure, laws and rules. As educated, responsible citizens we are supposed to drive within speed limits and abide by the laws. Yes, accidents might still happen then, but when speed is in control, you are in control. One of the guests shared her story as well, and connected with us, sharing how she lost a family member due to road safety. We were so happy and proud when she overcame her www.connector.ae
fear and went behind the wheels and zoomed the race tracks. This is our goal with reaching people and the campaign. What Are Your Future Plans To Take This Campaign To The Next Level? The campaign is on-going and #SpeedLegally with Dubai Autodrome was just a part of it. Our message is to reach to the youngsters in schools, universities and students just learning to drive. It is a huge part of our day to day, if we think about it and more than just technicalities and theories, we need to work a right approach. We are also planning to visit universities and speak to student councils in order to reach the maximum number of people. We would love to work on a campaign with the RTA, Yas Marina Circuit and also with the driving schools in the city. This is a non-profit cause and my team, supporters and I are just looking to get the word out and reach as many people as we can with our message. We want people to connect with us, listen to our story and think for just a minute. We are working hard to come up with ideas that are eye-catchy and that grab attention. Let’s wait for us to reveal the next one in line! What Is The One Key Message That You Would Like To Give Through Your Own Experience? My message to everyone is that, our lives are precious and beautiful. We need to take care of ourselves and those around us. Speeding is in the moment but the impacts can last for a lifetime. We are in the beautiful month of March, a fragrant Spring month, where we celebrate all the special women who are the reason our lives bloom. This month will celebrate not just one but two different days dedicated to the women in our lives. The world celebrates International Women’s Day on 8 March, and the UAE celebrates Mother’s Day on 21 March. Many other countries, including the UK, also celebrate Mother’s Day in March but on different dates. Let’s dig a bit into the history to understand how this special day came about. The first International Women’s Day dates back to 28th February 1908 in New York City when 15,000 female textile workers marched in protest of unequal rights at work and a lack of voting rights. The following year the first National Women’s Day was observed by the 24 MARCH CONNECTOR
Socialist Party of America. Then in 1910, at the Socialist International Meeting in Copenhagen, the first global event was held on the 19th March. It wasn’t until 1914 that the date finally settled on the 8th March. The reason being that in 1914 the 8th was on a Sunday and it would be easier for women to attend marches and events on that day. The annual celebration seeks to focus on the social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women around the world. There are 10 key values which are celebrated: justice, dignity, hope, equality, collaboration, tenacity, appreciation, respect, empathy and forgiveness. So this year, when you celebrate International Women’s Day, take a moment to think about the real cause behind it. Whether they are completely fresh outlets or established premises changing themes, however they come about, each claim to offer a different experience to others out there. Olival Eatery and Bar at the Habtoor Grand Resort in Dubai Marina, is one of these new places and offers more than most, not just on its menu. This new Mediterranean restaurant, set in the grounds of the hotel is great to visit for any occasion. ehavioral and emotional disorders in childhood are common reaching about 10-20%. Unfortunately they not dealt with or paid attention too. Studies have shown that behavioral and emotional disorders are associated with poor academic, occupational, and psychosocial performance. The risk factors are many: genetic, perinatal, maternal, family, parenting, socio-economic and personal risk factors. They fall mostly in 2 categories 1. Externalization disorders {Disruptive behavior (temper tantrums, ADHA, oppositional, defiant or conduct disorder, Pervasive developmental disorder(autism)} 2. Internalization disorders (Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder) Disruptive behavior: are the most common in preschool and school aged kids. Even though mild defiance and disruptive behavior is considered normal in this age, but extremely difficult and challenging behavior outside the norm for the age and the level of development are recognized as behavioral disorders. Community studies has identified that 80% of kids will have tantrums at times, 10% will have tantrums daily. Healthcare providers may not be able to differentiate between developmentally normal emotions (fear or crying) and disorders that manifest as prolonged and severe emotional distresses. Certain diseases affects the child body image (chronic eczema, acne, diabetes, obesity‌) leading to poor quality of life. Child obesity explained
and how to reverse it
C hildhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. Children who are obese are above the normal weight for their age and height. What Defines Child Obesity? Dr Mandar V. Bichu, Head of Right Parenting, Zulekha Hospital says, “WHO defines overweight and obesity as conditions with abnormal excessive fat accumulation in the body, which is harmful to health. Body weight, skin fold thickness or waist circumference measurements give some idea about obesity. But most commonly, the overweight or obese children are diagnosed based on Body Mass Index (BMI). There are standardised BMI charts for different gender-specific age-groups. BMI between 85th to 95th percentile defines overweight and above 95th percentile defines obesity." Carole Chidiac, M.D. at GMC Clinics says, “Regardless of definitions, all children should have well balanced meals and eat from all food groups while limiting (not stopping) sugar, and have an active lifestyle. 48 MARCH CONNECTOR
Children who have difficulties in maintaining a balanced lifestyle regardless of their weight and children whose BMI jump up significantly on their individual charts require clinical evaluation” Dr Khairunnisa Mattummal, Specialist Pediatrician, Aster Jubilee Medical Complex, Bur Dubai says, “When the weight of the child is higher than expected as per the height and age, the child is overweight or obese. If the BMI (Body Mass Index, that is weight divided by height in metre square) is 25 to 30 it is defined as overweight and if the BMI is more than 30, it is defined as obesity.” What Contributes To The Child Obesity? From genes to leading an unhealthy lifestyle, there are multiple factors which can cause obesity in children. While some of the factors cannot be controlled, there are few things one can work on, if willing to. Dr Vishal Mehta, Senior Specialist, Paediatrics at RAK Hospital lists the following key reasons contributing majorly to #connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING obesity in children: 1. In children, obesity is largely the result of dietary intake, lack of physical activity, and increasing sedentary behaviour. It’s no secret that one of the biggest factors of obesity is fast food consumption, which is rich and high on calories with low nutritional value. Moreover, eating large portion sizes, and that too of food rich in unhealthy fats further causes obesity. 2. Another important cause of obesity is sugary beverages and snacking on foods such as chips, baked goods, and candy. 3. The dietary factors are further endorsed by the fact that generally children live a sedentary lifestyle, with little or no physical activity. Each additional hour of television or gadgets per day increased the prevalence of obesity by 2%. 4. Then there are socio-cultural factors. Adults often use food - particularly sugary snacks - as reward for children, while calorie-laden food is often served in social gatherings, encouraging youngsters’ love for such food. 5. When it comes to food habits, children tend to copy adults, and if high caloric food is available in the house, there’s a likely chance, the children will have similar eating preferences. Approaching the family with a non judgemental approach and explaining that there are many factors that contribute to weight gain is a right way of going about it.” Dr Evelyne Khoriaty, Consultant Paediatrician at HealthBay says, “Genetic factors could be inherited or part of a syndrome. Some of the endocrine disorders that are associated with obesity are cortisol excess, hypothyroidism and growth hormone deficiency.” What Are The Possible LongTerm Effects Of Childhood Obesity? Childhood obesity can lead to several conditions as they grow up. The key is to monitor and control obesity to reduce the risk of developing chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemias, hypertension, heart conditions, sleep apnea, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, polycystic ovarian disease, etc. Dr Vishal Mehta of RAK Hospital says, “Childhood obesity can have several long-term effects, both physically and emotionally. It is linked to several medical conditions, such as fatty liver disease, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, gallstones, cardiovascular disease, menstrual abnormalities, high cholesterol and insulin resistance among others. Often physical health conditions that obese children face gradually disappear as they grow older and achieve their healthy weight, at times, the negative effects carry on into adulthood. HEALTH & WELLBEING stigmatised, alienated and bullied, leading to low self-esteem, low self-confidence, and a negative body image.” Dr Mandar V. Bichu of Zulekha Hospital says, “These problems don’t just end in childhood and often there are longterm consequences. Obese children and adolescents are 5 times more likely to be obese in adulthood than their non-obese counterparts. They also have a 2030% increased risk of developing serious diseases like diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and various types of cancers in their adulthood. There are also higher chances of adult asthma, mental health problems and reproductive disorders in them.” Carole Chidiac of GMC Clinics says, “We come in different shape and sizes and not every big kid is going to have health issues. At the stage, addressing the psychosocial complications in a priority.” What Age Group Is Most Affected By Obesity? Obesity can be seen in all age groups from pre-school, to school and to adolescence. The highest incidence of obesity is in the adolescent age group. Dr Mandar V. Bichu of Zulekha Hospital says, “The obesity in children goes on increasing over the ages. In US, obesity prevalence was 13.9% among 2 to 5 years old, 18.4% among 6 to 11 years old, and 20.6% among 12 to 19 years old.” 50 MARCH CONNECTOR
Does Obesity Increase With Age? The apparent answer is yes. Obesity can only be controlled if one learns to make healthier choices in life. It won’t disappear on its own. Ms. Alaa Takidin, Clinical Dietician, Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “According to the World Health Organisation, obese infants and young children are more likely to continue to be obese during childhood, adolescence and adulthood if no intervention was implemented.” Dr Mandar V. T he findings of one of the largest population studies conducted recently on 33,000 Emirati men between the age of 18 and 30 in the UAE has revealed some startling statistics, with a majority of Emirati men under the age of 30 suffering from obesity, diabetes, and other lifestyle conditions. According to the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) study, 67% of Emirati men and 72% of Emirati women are overweight, and round 39.9% of women and 25.6% of men are obese. Dr Yousef Alsaadi, Director of Conformity Affairs Department at Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology Authority (ESMA) and the first Emirati Certified Food Scientist said that the obesity in children is a cause of concern in the UAE. Various statistics show that many students are obese and suffer from obesity52 MARCH CONNECTOR
related health issues and the number of overweight children is expected to rise further. To bring the percentage of child obesity down to zero by 2071 in the UAE, the government launched the Nutrition Labelling Policy. The policy instructs pre-packed food companies to print nutritional labels on to food packets in the form of traffic light colours. The implementation will be mandatory starting from 1 January 2022. What Is Traffic Light Labelling? It is a label that can be placed on pre-packaged food and drinks to show nutritional information with details on fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt content. The information can be for either 100g or 100ml of the food or drink or per portion #connectordubai
NUTRITION LABELLING size. The colour-coded system makes it easier for consumers to see which nutrients are low and high in the food. What Do The Three Colour Codes Mean? Nutritional labels will reveal fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt content in three colours - red, amber and green. Information on calories will also be included in the labels. • Green means low risk, healthier choice • Amber means medium risk, consume moderately • Red means high risk, don’t consume frequently The nutrition policy covers canned, solid and liquid foods, but excludes fresh foods such as fruit, vegetables, meat and fish.
Speaking on how food labelling will help to maintain balanced food diet, Dr Yousef Alsaadi, explains, “If you see a red colour on the front of the pack, it does not mean that you should not or you cannot eat it, but that you should try to keep an eye on how often you choose this food, or how much of them you eat. A diet with fewer reds can help you achieve a healthier diet.” "Adding if you see the colour amber, these foods are neither high nor low for that nutrient. Food with ambers helps you balance your diet; just try to include a few green ones too. Otherwise, the green colour means that food is low in that specific nutrient that you may wish to avoid over-consuming to improve your diet.” “The more green consumers intake, the healthier the choice, but you don’t have to eat only green colour coded foods, including a few ambers and reds can be part of your balanced diet and will help you get all the beneficial nutrients you need."

What Is Fat Transfer? Fat transfer can be seen as a dream treatment as it transfers body fat from an undesirable place to more desirable one. For those that want to reduce a fat tummy and flat buttocks, this treatment can do the trick. It is a procedure of transferring fat from areas of surplus fat to areas of volume depletion or to areas where adding volume will improve the look or achieve more symmetry or harmony. Dr Luciano Tracia, Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Aesthetica Clinics says, “The fat transfer or Lipofilling procedure is a surgical technique that allows to move your own fat from one area of your body to another; for this reason it is a complementary step of the liposuction. In this method often 500 to 1000 ml fat can be transferred safely. • Microfat transfer is harvesting small quantity of fat with the help of a syringe from lower abdomen or outer thighs. These tiny droplets of fat cells or membranes are used in the dermis of the skin for new collagen formation, repair of cells in the skin and hence can be used to treat fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars. • Stromal Vascular Factor (SVF) is derived from fat cells using a very specialised technique based on the principle that the membrane of fat cells contains specialised growth factors that help in regenerating body cells. SVF produces millions of such growth factor that can be used to treat alopecia, or hair thinning, aging skin, acne scars and stretch marks.
