SAINT Malo has been named one of the top 10 holiday destinations in France by users of the Tripadvisor website – and the only northern town outside Paris to make it into the top league. Location, beauty and diversity all played their part in the town’s 10th place ranking, sitting alongside popular sunny destinations in the south such as Cannes, Nice, Bordeaux and Biarritz. The director of Saint Malo tourist office, Laurence Bozzuffi, said: “I feel very proud. We are flying the flag for three quarters of northern France, which is a lot.” She added: ‘We can’t always rely on the weather like some obvious places, but Saint Malo is not simply a seasonal seaside town but one that lives all year round. “Saint Malo is renowned around the world for its stunning architecture and rich history which is why it features in many guidebooks, but it’s also a place that can meet the demands of anyone from sport fanatics to passionate gastronomes. The name itself evokes something in people’s imaginations. Not many places do that.” The town has numerous restaurants squeezed inside the ancient ramparts.

Is that a whale?

A NEW set of outfits supplied to Brittany’s 200 motorcycle police since February has already saved the life of one officer in Finistère. The unnamed offier was chasing a Renault 21 estate near Châteaulin when someone in the car threw an obstacle out of the window and, swerving to avoid it, he crashed into a Mercedes coming the other way. The driver and the passengers in the Mercedes escaped unhurt and the officer came out of the incident with only minor injuries, breaking his wrist and spraining his neck and shoulder. The new anoraks have built in airbags connected to the motorcycle by a flexible cable which when jerked (due to an officer having a road accident for example) sets off a CO2 aerosol to inflate airbags around the neck, along the spine and around the thorax. Brittany police spokesman Pascal Jourdhier said: “We can’t prove 100% that he would have died if he hadn’t been wearing the new outfit, but that is our impression. “The officers are very pleased to get the new outfits. We’ve been waiting a while for them. The safety of our officers is primordial.” Î Turn to page 2
