Connextions Magazine issue #30: Everyday Pride examines life in places where diversity and inclusion and LGBTQ+ rights are being challenged by a wave of new anti-LGBTQ+ laws. It is easy to recommend places that are LGBTQ+-friendly, however, it is not always easy to recommend visitors to places where the laws may not be on our side. However, there are cities around the USA that are fighting against this backwards legislation, and they are showing us that Pride should be celebrated year-round.

Pride is not just a once-a-year event; it’s a mindset, and a celebration of LGBTQ+ diversity that deserves recognition every day of the year. While Pride Month may shine a spotlight on LGBTQ+ rights and visibility, the spirit of pride should be embraced 365 days a year. Here’s a guide to celebrating LGBTQ+ pride every day and fostering a culture of inclusivity, acceptance, and love throughout the year.

1. Educate Yourself: Pride is rooted in the history of LGBTQ+ activism and the ongoing struggle for equality. Take the time to educate yourself about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, past and present. Read books, watch documentaries, and engage with diverse voices to gain a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences and perspectives.

2. Support LGBTQ-Owned Businesses: Whether it’s shopping at queer-owned shops, dining at LGBTQ-friendly restaurants, or attending events hosted by LGBTQ+ groups, your support helps strengthen LGBTQ+ visibility and economic empowerment.

3. Amplify LGBTQ+ Voices: Use your platform, whether it’s social media, your workplace, or your community, to amplify LGBTQ+ voices and stories. Advocate for LGBTQ+ representation in media, politics, and other spheres of influence, ensuring that queer voices are heard and respected year-round.

4. Volunteer and Give Back: Whether it’s participating in LGBTQ+ youth mentorship programs, volunteering at LGBTQ+ shelters, or fundraising for LGBTQ+ charities, your contributions make a tangible difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

5. Practice Inclusivity and Allyship: Challenge discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, speak out against homophobia and transphobia, and actively work to create a culture of acceptance and affirmation.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ pride isn’t confined to one month; it’s a daily commitment to fostering a culture of love, acceptance, and equality for all. By educating ourselves, supporting LGBTQ+-owned businesses, amplifying queer voices, volunteering our time, and practicing inclusivity and allyship, we can make every day a celebration of LGBTQ+ diversity and resilience. Let’s embrace pride 365 days a year.

SAN ANTONIO WHERE I REDISCOVERED MY PRIDE! SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

LGBTQ+ Pride is not just a one-month-a-year event; it’s a mindset, a celebration of LGBTQ+ diversity that deserves recognition every day of the year, it’s our day-to-day existence. This year, we are highlighting different places to visit not just during Pride.

Our first stop may not be the first state that comes to mind for LGBTQ+ travelers, but it’s a hidden gem that offers a welcoming and vibrant experience. From its inclusive community to its diverse nightlife scene, San Antonio, Texas embraces diversity with open arms. Yes, that Texas, the one with many anti-LGBTQ+ laws, however, San Antonio’s LGBTQ+ community is thriving and is a shining star showering LGBTQ+ travelers with many fun adventures.

As a gay traveler, I had the pleasure of exploring the dynamic City of San Antonio and discovering its many hidden treasures. San Antonio prides itself on its friendly and inclusive atmosphere, making LGBTQ+ visitors feel right at home.

Throughout my stay, I encountered nothing but warmth and acceptance from the locals, whether I was exploring the city’s landmarks or enjoying its nightlife. The city’s commitment to diversity is evident in its numerous LGBTQ-friendly establishments and events, creating a safe and welcoming environment for travelers of all gender identities, and its people are so friendly that beckons visitors to return.

I must admit that I was extremely apprehensive that I was traveling to Texas from Florida, where the LGBTQ+ community is also under attack by its legislators who keep passing anti-LGBTQ+ laws. I have never been one to bow down to unfair laws, in fact, I do a lot of work behind the scenes to fight these laws.

Travel: San Antonio

You see, most travel writers will tell you that we do this type of work because we love it, and not for the financial gains. So, like most travel writers, I also have a day job, and mine is to oversee a very successful and award-winning LGBTQ Center in Florida; as its Director, I get to be on the front lines of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

My kids make fun of me because I am always wearing something with a rainbow on it, whether it’s my shoes, socks, belt, or t-shirts, I live proudly 365 days of the year and on leap years too!

However, in the spring of 2023, Florida passed several anti-LGBTQ laws. Homophobic violence rose and our community was exhausted from all the fighting. Subconsciously, I started wearing less and less rainbows in my everyday outfits. Perhaps to protect myself or to protect my family.

So, when I was invited to visit San Antonio, although I was eager, I was also a bit scared. I wondered if it would be ok for me to wear Pride t-shirts while I was there, after all, I was visiting during Pride Month! That’s when I realized I was shying away from my community in my own home state and that needed to stop. So, I packed my rainbow t-shirts and shoes and made my way to San Antonio, Texas.

WHERE I LANDED!

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the airport in San Antonio to be welcomed with a “Happy Pride Month” on all of their TVs in the baggage area. I thought to myself, “Wow, this is Texas, how cool is this? We would never be allowed to do this in Florida.”

As I made my way to the Hotel Gibbs, my Uber driver, without any prompting on my part, started talking about how diverse and inclusive the city is and then took me on the scenic route to my hotel, while showing me some of the “must-sees” as a first-time visitor. He had no clue I was a travel writer and that I would eventually be documenting my experience, but he just wanted to welcome me to his city.

WHERE I SLEPT!

The Hotel Gibbs is a boutique hotel that offers a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Situated in the heart of downtown San Antonio, it provides convenient access to popular attractions such as the River Walk, just steps from the Alamo, and the vibrant entertainment and dining scene of the city. The hotel’s central location is ideal for all guests. Being within walking distance of major attractions, dining options, and shopping destinations makes it a great choice for both leisure and business LGBTQ+ travelers looking to explore San Antonio.

Guests are greeted with a very friendly staff members, and if you are lucky enough to run into one of the workers who knows the history of the hotel, you will learn a lot. Whether it’s offering recommendations for local restaurants, talking about its history, or assisting with any requests, the staff receives high marks for their professionalism and hospitality in my book.

The first thing that caught my eye was the old-fashioned and luxurious elevators in the lobby, which are just for decoration, the actual elevators are hidden behind it. The wall was kept with the elevator doors due to its historical importance and beauty. The rooms are well-appointed, featuring

Connextions Magazine | EVERYDAY PRIDE | Spring 2024 12

contemporary design elements and amenities such as flat-screen TVs, plush bedding, and complimentary Wi-Fi. But what truly caught my attention about the hotel was the hallways. The Hotel Gibbs was created as an office building, and as such, the hallways have maintained that look and feel, even though the rooms are quite modern. Some guests have reported seeing or experiencing ghosts in the hotel, I am prone to seeing things, however, I didn’t witness any during this trip.

I stayed in one of the King Executive suites, and it was big enough for up to four people. Upon entering the room, you are greeted by the living room and a separate bedroom. From my room, I could see the majestic building across from me, which to my untrained eyes seemed like some sort of federal building or courthouse. To my right, I could catch a glimpse of The Alamo and realize just how close it is to the hotel.

Hopscotch

WHERE MY IMAGINATION WENT WILD!

Hopscotch

My first stop is Hopscotch, which is an immersive and experiential experience bringing artists to create a unique, impactful, and immersive experience. Guests are self-guided through different rooms, each with a different experience, but the main thread among the art is that of diversity and inclusion.

Whether the room plays with your senses or forces you to literally immerse yourself in a huge pool of glowing balls, or opens your mind to your darkest secrets, a visit to Hopscotch will help you create unforgettable experiences. One of the experiences is called Gaze, which is in collaboration with the Human Rights

Campaign, guests will find themselves in a maze of glass walls with positive and colorful luminescent words and phrases empowering the LGBTQ+ community.

After experiencing the art, take some time to chill by the bar, where the drinks are as imaginative as the art itself.

Not only are the names of the drinks creative, but the ingredients, their presentation, and flavors are also works of art. There are so many selfie-worthy moments for people of all ages, that you may need to relax and soak up the entire place, guaranteed to find art everywhere inside.

The Witte Museum

The Witte Museum

The Witte Museum is a prominent cultural institution dedicated to telling the story of Texas’ natural history, science, and culture. The museum is named after Ellen Schulz Quillin, whose maiden name was Witte, in honor of her generous contribution to the museum in memory of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred G. Witte.

The Witte Museum has a wide range of exhibits and attractions, including displays on dinosaurs, Texas wildlife, Native American artifacts, Texas art, and the history of San Antonio and South Texas. It also features interactive exhibits, educational programs, and special events throughout the year. One of the highlights of the museum is the Robert J. and Helen C.

Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center, which offers an immersive journey through the diverse cultural heritage of South Texas, including the contributions of Native Americans, Spanish settlers, cowboys, and Tejanos.

The Witte Museum is located near the San Antonio River and is adjacent to Brackenridge Park, providing visitors with a beautiful natural setting to explore along with their museum experience.

During my visit at The Witte Museum, I had a chance to sit down and talk with the museum’s Vice President of Development and local LGBTQ+ activist, Justin Munoz about his life as an out and proud gay man in San Antonio and the work he did in his community. In addition to his role at the Witte, Justin served as an elected Executive

Committee Member for Visit San Antonio and an elected Honorary Commander for Joint Base San Antonio, where he leveraged his experience in community relations and strategic partnership development. He was also the President of the San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce, a role that he was very proud to have.

Speaking to Justin, left me with a sense of easiness about being gay, that I hadn’t been feeling back home in Florida. He spoke about how the community rallied behind his work and supported his efforts in the LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, not just the LGBTQ+ community, but the community at large. This clear sense of belonging surely increases the quality of life for everyone.

The McNay Art Museum

The McNay Art Museum is known for its impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. It was founded by Marion Koogler McNay in 1954 and was the first modern art museum in Texas.

The museum is housed in a Spanish Colonial Revival-style mansion, which was originally Marion Koogler McNay’s home. The mansion, built in the 1920s, provides a picturesque setting for displaying art and features beautiful gardens and courtyards.

The McNay Art Museum’s collection includes works by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Diego Rivera, Joan Miró, and many others.

It encompasses a wide range of art forms, including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and decorative arts. In addition to its permanent collection, the McNay Art

Museum hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programs, lectures, and special events.

The museum’s mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art through its diverse exhibitions and programs.

During my visit to the McNay, I had the opportunity to meet the museum’s new Director and CEO, Dr. Matthew McLendon. Matthew had recently moved from the East Coast to San Antonio to take on the role of serving as the fourth Director and CEO in the museum’s 68-year history.

Matthew previously served in curatorial and educational positions at the Rollins Museum of Art and Tate Britain, London. He also served as teaching faculty for graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Virginia, Florida State

University, New College of Florida, and Rollins College. His partner, at the time of our conversation, was still living part-time in New York, where they both previously resided. Matthew and his partner traveled back and forth.

His perspective on being an out and proud gay man moving from a rather liberal state to a more conservative one was very important. Originally, there was a littl bit of hesitation about moving to a more conservative state, however, Matthew explained that the people of San Antonio welcomed him and his partner without reservations. Once again, I was reminded the people of San Antonio are genuine and welcoming.

WHERE I WAS ON A PRIDE FLOAT!

River Walk

One of the highlights of my trip was strolling along the famous River Walk, an iconic destination that captures the heart and soul of San Antonio, Texas. Meandering through the heart of downtown, this enchanting urban oasis is a bustling hub of activity, culture, and natural beauty.

It is composed of a picturesque network of walkways lined with restaurants, shops, and lush greenery, coupled with the soothing sound of the flowing water of the San Antonio River. With over 100 restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, from Tex-Mex and barbecue to Italian and seafood, the River Walk is buzzing with diverse dining, and there’s no shortage of options to satisfy your appetite.

After a delicious meal, explore the unique shops and boutiques lining the River Walk, where you’ll find everything from souvenirs and gifts to

handmade crafts and artisanal goods. I highly recommend taking a boat tour to gain a unique perspective of this urban oasis, especially during the enchanting evening hours when the walkway comes alive with twinkling lights.

Go Rio San Antonio is the company that provides the riverboat tours along the River Walk, offering visitors a unique perspective of the city’s downtown area. Tours typically last around 35 to 40 minutes and cover approximately 1.5 miles of the River Walk. During the tour, passengers learn about the history, architecture, and culture of San Antonio while enjoying scenic views of the river and its surroundings.

As you wander along the River Walk, you’ll encounter a wealth of historical landmarks and points of interest. Highlights include the historic Aztec Theatre, the iconic San Antonio River Walk Arches, and the scenic Hemisfair Park. Be sure to stop by the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Briscoe Western Art Museum to admire their impressive collections and exhibitions.

River Walk Pride Parade

Rediscover Pride

Once a year, during Pride Month, the River Walk Pride Parade is celebrated, highlighting San Antonio’s culture of inclusion. Visit San Antonio partners with key members of the LGBTQ+ community to commemorate the city’s diverse and thriving LGBTQ+ community with a unique expression of celebration with the River Parade. People start to line up along the river or sit at the Arneson River Theatre at around noon. The concerts start at 1 pm and the boat parade has two showings, one at 4 pm and one at 6:30.

This massive, colorful and proud celebration is produced by Visit San Antonio, and this time around, they asked me along with the other LGBTQ+ travel journalists to experience Pride from their float! This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be in the middle of the festivities. I can honestly tell you that my heart was so filled with love and excitement to be part of this experience.

The fabulous San Antonio native, Ada Vox was the Grand Marshall. Ada sang her way into the hearts of viewers of Season 16 of American Idol and became the first drag performer to advance to the show’s finals, making the Top 10 of her season. Ada also finished as runner-up on Queen of the Universe, streaming now on Paramount+. She is not only talented and beautiful, but she is also a very sweet person. As we had a chance to chat for a bit, she mentioned her grandmother, who loves to collect all her news clippings, and my heart melted!

Whether you’re dining at a riverside restaurant, shopping for souvenirs, simply taking in the sights and sounds, watching the River Walk Pride Parade or being on a float, a visit to the River Walk is sure to be a memorable experience that showcases the best of San Antonio’s charm and hospitality.

2. Take a bite: Angle the taco slightly towards your mouth and move your head towards the taco – not th other way around. Take a bite from the end. Be mindful not to bite too much off at once to avoid any spillage.

3. Enjoy the flavors: As you take a bite, savor the flavors of the different ingredients. Tacos often consist of various components like meat, vegetables, salsa, and cheese, so each bite can offer a different taste experience.

4. Rotate the taco: As you progress through the taco, you may find it helpful to rotate it slightly, ensuring you get an even distribution of filling with each bite.

The restaurant’s décor is inspired by Havana’s 1950s heyday, featuring vintage furnishings and tropical accents that create a vibrant and inviting space for diners.

making it a popular dining destination for both locals and visitors alike.

I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Chef Kirk, who uses they/them pronouns. Chef Kirk spoke about their life growing up in Laredo and moving to San Antonio when they turned 18.

Overall, Ocho is celebrated for its delicious food, charming ambiance, and scenic location along the San Antonio River Walk,

After doing several types of jobs, Chef Kirk started working as a line cook and that’s where they discovered their passion for cooking. They decided to register and graduate from the Culinary Institute of America. After graduation, Chef Kirk opened a food truck, which later turned into a restaurant. Eventually, Chef Kirk decided to continue to expand and Ocho was born. If you are visiting San Antonio, I highly recommend you make time to eat at Ocho and hopefully, meet Chef Kirk, who is an inspirational person, as well as extremely talented Chef.

RAISING THE BAR: WATER, KOOL-AID & FAMILY FUN

The Bahamas is a tourist destination that generally caters to a diverse range of visitors, including those from the LGBTQ+ community. However, it’s essential to note that the Bahamas is a conservative country, and attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals may vary among locals and visitors. It’s always a good idea for LGBTQ+ travelers to exercise discretion and respect local customs and sensitivities and also be aware of the broader cultural and legal context of the Bahamas regarding LGBTQ+ rights to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

While the Bahamas does not legally recognize same-sex marriage, and certain laws and cultural attitudes may not be LGBTQ+ friendly, Atlantis Paradise Island promotes an atmosphere of acceptance and celebration of diversity within its premises, and this is why we recommend it for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Here are some of the top reasons we highly recommend Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas:

Inclusive Atmosphere

The resort typically hosts events and activities that appeal to a diverse audience, including LGBTQ+ travelers.

Stunning Location

One of the highlights for guests of all ages is Aquaventure, which is a vast water park featuring thrilling water slides, lazy rivers, and pools.

The centerpiece is the iconic Mayan Temple with its thrilling water slides, including the Leap of Faith, a near-vertical drop through a shark-filled lagoon.

Beach and Pools

With miles of pristine beaches and multiple swimming pools, guests can relax and soak up the sun or enjoy various water activities such as snorkeling and paddleboarding.

Marine Habitats

The marine habitats at Atlantis, including the largest open-air marine habitat in the world, are highly praised by visitors. Guests enjoy getting up close to marine animals such as sharks, rays, and dolphins. Dolphin Cay is an interactive marine habitat allowing guests to swim and interact with dolphins in a controlled environment focusing on conservation efforts and marine life education.

It’s All About Kool-Aid

When you visit Atlantis, be on the lookout for Kool-Aid! Kool-Aid is one of Atlantis’ Ambassadors and he will go out of his way to make your stay is an unforgettable experience.

Kool-Aid spent the day with us, gave us a tour of the place, introduced us to some amazing experiences in Aquaventure and showed us the best shopping spots.

We returned a year later, and our kids were eager to see him again. Their day would not have been complete without a high-five from Kool-Aid.

Kool-Aid’s job is to showcase all of the fun activities that Atlantis has to offer, and he has worked with many of the celebrities who have visited Atlantis. He is a super fun personality, full of life and joy, and he will make sure that everyone is having a great time.

When he walks around, everyone of the team members will always waive at him or greet him. We dubbed him the King of Atlantis, because he is so popular and always makes people smile.

If you have a chance to meet him, let him know the Connextions Magazine family introduced you to him and that we say hello. Can’t wait to see him again!

TRAVEL

KEY WEST, FLORIDA

NAKED AND LOVING IT!

As an accomplished journalist, writer and editor, David’s work appears in 19-and-counting publications, Instinct Magazine, The Huffington Post, the Edge Media Network, Connextions Magazine and Out.com among them. Covering travel, luxury, style, and adventure (with tech and science thrown in for color), David is a humor writer with a really, really, really well-used passport.

Key West locals call it “the Backcountry.” I call it “an Enya video.” On the map, it is the shallow stretch of sea west of Key West itself, where the Gulf of Mexico flows into the Straits of Florida.

Once there, I found it was a veritable symphony of blues: robin’s egg for the sky; a shifting swirl of cerulean, azure, and aqua for the water. Even turquoise and arctic blue, where the sandbars rolled close to the surface. There were no islands around, nothing to break the glass-flat horizon line. Everything was quiet and smooth and blue.

And naked. I was naked, the people with me were naked, the crew of the Blu Q catamaran we were all on was naked, most of us were hammered, and I am sure at least two people on that boat were porn stars. This is Key West. Gay Key West. Eat your heart out, Enya.

The Party Never Ends

It was my first time in Key West, and I had heard a lot of stories: it’s a beach, a bacchanal, a bar-hopping bonanza…the last of which was strongly hinted at when I was in the airport restroom and over the urinal was an ad for a hangover cure service. Had one too many? These helpful folks will make a house call, IVs at the ready. They’ll rehydrate you, jazz you up with electrolytes and other bio-wazzits, and presto! You can do it all over again come brunch. Bars open at 10 AM, so jazz accordingly.

But it also has a history. Key West got its gay on early — the first gay resort opened in 1967. Even before, Tennessee Williams and Leonard Bernstein bought homes here in 1941, attracted by the fact the island was far from prying eyes and its live-and-let-live attitude.

C onnextionsMagazine.com 47
& Loving It
Naked

Straight luminaries like Ernest Hemingway even jumped in. By the 1970s, Key West was one of the very few gay-friendly retreats in the country that was honest about it and with a straight population that was acceping of it.

This is why, in the plague years of the 1980s, HIV+ gay men descended in their thousands on Key West to live out their final days under the Florida sun, cocktails in hand till the end. Then came December 6, 1995, and the AIDS combination drug therapy began; gay men who had all but accepted their fate suddenly found themselves facing a completely different scenario: longevity. Faced with an

average lifespan, gays who had come to Key West to die found themselves the founding fathers of a living, breathing community that thrives to this day. With cocktails.

A Gay In The Life

The Great Gay Glow-Up has gone gonzo ever since, and just try and find a locale on Key West that isn’t run by, involved with, derived from, or owes its existence to the gays, and later, the full LGBTQ+ acronym.

The island’s entire social calendar revolves around gay/gayesque events: August

Connextions Magazine | EVERYDAY PRIDE | Spring 2024 48

Naked & Loving It

with Tropical Heat, followed by Womenfest in September, which passes the baton to Fantasy Fest, a flesh-filled phantasmagoria in October. But Key West can get so gay that it leads to an embarrassing question: where does a noob like me start?

Unlike most gay beach resorts, Key West has no gay beach — almost all of the action is in town. Duval Street is the spine of Key West, lined end to end with places to go (be kicked out of), people to meet (once and never again), and things to do (that you will deny later).

The gay gets going at the intersection of Duval and Petronia, set off by its four-way rainbow crosswalk, but I still minded the rainbow flags; a bustling bevy of bodacious boozeries, over 100, jostle for attention in a stretch of just five blocks, some of them straight.

A few are literally out of this world; the Flaming Buoy is probably the only gay “Star Wars” themed eatery I’ve ever experienced. A little more down to Earth is La Te Da, where I met the legendary Christoper Peterson, whose stage show had him bouncing from Marilyn Monroe to Liza Minnelli to Reba McEntire. But after a slip of the tongue, I was schooled; Peterson is not a drag queen, but a female impersonator. His fans learned me quickly.

Even more than divas, I like dives…gay ones if I can find them. In Key West, that’s Bobby’s Monkey. Famed for its out-of-control karaoke, this place, with its creaking floor and chandelier made out of dolls, is militantly “low rent;” do not even think of ordering anything frozen or with more than three ingredients.

Clear those hurdles and behold the wonder that is a $3 gin and tonic served in a pint glass. In my

49

Travel: Key West

native New York, where the same drink at half the size can cost $15, this was a revelation. No wonder there’s a hangover service.

What Plays in Key West…

But all gay life in Key West truly revolves around the Island House. Practically self-contained (hotel, bar, gym, steam room, pool, naked) to the point there is no compelling reason to leave it, the Island House is the oldest gay retreat on the island, going back to the pre-drug 1980s. Back then, it was a defiant beacon of gay resilience. It still is, only with the added bonus of permanence. But, being true to its early roots, the cocktails are never far away. I recommend the Mai Tai. I blame the reputation I now have on them completely.

So you might wonder why I stayed at the Equator Resort. It is just as gay, just as naked, but far more low-key and quiet. The Equator, in fact, epitomizes the “hidden Key West”: Leave Duval Street and the island slows down fast. Even one block over is a seismic shift into leafy lanes and gingerbread houses. It has been over 100 years since a hurricane directly hit the island, meaning much of its old-timey architecture remains intact. With its white clapboard and filigreed columns, the Equator fits right in.

It was that quaint quietude that drew me. The Island House was for the party, the Equator was for the vacation. What can I say? Maybe I’m just one of those guys who likes his partying and pooping-out separately. Or maybe it’s because it’s 4 AM, there’s a distressingly good-looking man in the pool by himself, and he has two cocktails. One of which he’s offering me. And we’re naked.

This is Key West. Gay Key West. Eat your heart out, Enya.

The world’s only LGBTQ polo league is returning to Wellington, Florida ushering in stallions, world class professional polo players and an inimitable atmosphere of riotous color, vibrant celebration and inclusion for all individuals regardless of race, sex, gender, or sexual identity or orientation.

The Lexus International Gay Polo Tournament (GPL) will be held between April 4-6 at the Patagones Polo Club in Wellington, Florida and organizers are predicting a substantial turnout.

Founder Chip McKenney established the event almost two decades ago as a way to expand his LGBTQ social network in Los Angeles, California.

“It started informally with just a few friends and friends of friends attending monthly polo clinics

at the Santa Barbara Polo Club,” said McKenney. “The next year, we gained more participants in terms of both members of the LGBTQ community and allies and then, it really took off.”

Over 3000 players, attendees and revelers join the festivities throughout the year all around the world, from Argentina (home to the world’s first formal match in 1875) to London to Saint-Tropez to the sun splashed shores of South Florida.

“I began to strategically elevate awareness of the Gay Polo League throughout the sport of polo and LGBTQ communities and developed a narrative that reflected the core values of the league: supportive, safe, encouraging and always fun,” McKenney said. “The Gay Polo League has become an instrument of change and oftentimes introduces gay people into the

lives and consciousness of people who have not known gay people first hand,” he added.

The three-day affair will feature an invitation-only welcome reception for players on Thursday, the Polotini Wigstock party on Friday, April 5 in which guests are encouraged to don fabulous hairpieces and outrageous extensions and the main event on Saturday, April 6 in which 16 players from all over the globe compete for The Senator’s Cup and The Founders Cup.

Keeping in the spirit of competition, attendees will also have the opportunity to compete for the event’s tailgate competition. Less beer and burgers and more crafting elaborate and fanciful tableaus, the tailgate contest is one of GPL weekend’s most interactive experiences with numerous coveted prizes up for grabs such as Best

in Show, Best Cuisine, Best Cocktail, Best Single Tailgate and Best Multiple Tailgate.

“While Gay Polo events are fun and competitive, it is really the desire for equality that pushes us to do more and evolve every year,” McKenney said. “In addition to elevating LGBTQ athletes and creating awareness, we want to engage more people about the issues the LGBTQ community faces which, we hope, will lead to understanding, respect and empathy. Understanding is the cornerstone for equity and inclusion.”

Proceeds from this year’s event benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation which supports HIV prevention, education programs, direct care and support services to people living with or at risk of HIV.
