Connie Connally & Sammy Peters FUSION With a career spanning nearly 50 years, abstract painter Sammy Peters skillfully composes complex canvasses with a powerful and sensuous combination of expressive brushwork, iterative marks, drips and mixed-media collage. He is heralded for his sophisticated interplay of shape and line, opacity and translucence, color and texture, material and image. His elegant hues, architectonic forms, and surface intricacies interplay to chart spontaneous explorations of the artist’s personal being and inspire quietly agitated dialogue between negative space and poetic figure. Improvisational and rigorously understated, Peter’s work actively reexamines and recombines diverse media and languages of painting in a singular combination of cold wax media, luminous resins, and richly saturated oils. His complex interplay of collaged papers and patterned fabrics, muted color blocks, calligraphic scribbles, and paint handling -- as subtly referential as it is boldly gestural -affirms Peter’s place at the vanguard of contemporary abstraction, and yet maintains his roots in painterly vernacular tradition.

several exhibition catalogues. Peter’s paintings continue to experience increasing curatorial and critical attention and are included in a growing number of esteemed public institutions and private collections internationally.

Sammy Peters earned his arts education at the Arkansas Arts Center School of Arts and Drama, Little Rock University, and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Presented in over seventy solo and group exhibitions, his work has garnered numerous awards and is the subject of

Connie Connally was educated at Oklahoma University and Wichita State University, later earning her MFA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Her work has been exhibited extensively across the United States and is included in numerous public and private collections.

Using a palette of organic color and caligraphic brushstroke that combine to serve as imprint of the artist’s profound passion for nature, Connie Connally paints graceful canvasses of liminal elegance with imagery that teeters between representational reference and powerful abstraction. From her experience of nature, Connally extracts essential elements and fragments of impression from colors, forms, and sensation. Each painting is a composite of what is remembered and what is imagined from her exuberant sense of being in nature. Rich, multi-layered surfaces of sun-drenched color morph, coalesce and juxtapose in quietly energetic rhythms. Connally’s poetic colorscapes with their expressive brushwork, sweeping gestural marks, and animated cadence, begin in plein air and situate her work as a unique and exciting form of abstracted landscape.
