here’s nothing like knowing we’re nearing an important milestone to bring out our best. Such was the case in 2013-2014 at University School in anticipation of our 100th birthday. Every square foot hummed with activity, and we may never have enjoyed a more high-flying year. That story grew from our Centennial construction initiative. A courageous Board voted in September to proceed on a five-level restoration and renovation of the iconic 1925 Demonstration School building. We reached deep into the basement, up to the erstwhile cafeteria on the roof, and we added a definitively modern entrance on the north side of campus. With early philanthropic support, the work was done in time to cut the ribbon as this new school year opened, and the forbearance of students and faculty, especially in grades 5-12, let us do this work for posterity.
Alongside the gifts that helped us make the most of our educational home came gifts to support programs and people. We endowed another faculty chair (our second), we established a new scholarship endowment, and we received one of four national leadership grants from the Edward E. Ford Foundation to underwrite curricular development projects with our Vanderbilt neighbors. We now claim a culture of philanthropy at USN, with resources that begin to approach the quality of the teaching and learning familiar here for decades.
chairs Amy and Gregg Shepard, and 13 year group stalwarts Juliet and Stephen Douglas, we reached our ambitious $1.3MM goal for this important school-wide resource. Combining Annual and Centennial gifts results in our highest giving total yet, building momentum for what promises to be our most celebrated year ever.
This proved a year of leadership on other fronts as well. Our 93-member senior class led Tennessee in National Merit Scholars, not just as a proportion of their total but in absolute numbers. We launched a neighborhood partnership with nearby Carter-Lawrence Elementary, for summer academic enrichment. Our students made deep playoff runs in every athletic season and created art that made its way to Carnegie Hall for recognition. They also took very good care of each other and their school. Also looking out for the school was our Board President, Dave Kloeppel, who helped us cover so much ground in his first year wearing that mantle. He joined USNA President Caroline Shockley to help shepherd a string of memorable community events from Fall Fest to Book Frenzy to Artclectic to Evening Classes to Music Night to Commencement. That year also featured a self-study and reaccreditation process, ably chaired by revered faculty colleague Nikki Hunt. Perhaps most memorable among our Visiting Committee’s recommendations is that we make time to think of our long term future, a perfect complement to our efforts to understand and appreciate our past. It all connects here in our Centennial year, in the present, in the company of such good and thoughtful people. Enjoy this chronicle of a year well spent. Ever thankful,
And still the Annual Fund set records. Led by parent chairs Laura and Brad Currie, leadership giving chairs Erich and Jane Groos, new parent

Annual Report 2013-2014
In fiscal year 2014, July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014, philanthropic support helped USN continue its commitment to academic excellence and innovation. USN raised annual gifts (unrestricted and restricted), endowment, and capital funds to support the school, its faculty and students, and programs. Annual gifts provide a critical 6% of USN’s operating budget, as well as funding for specific program and departmental needs. Capital gifts make possible facility renovations and expansions, including the grand new entrance and restoration of our original 1925 building. Endowment support secures the future and USN’s continued excellence. The pages of this Annual Report tell stories of how your financial support and generosity make something exceptional happen every day at 2000 Edgehill Avenue. We are grateful for the gifts and commitments within these totals: Annual Giving: $2,506,137 Capital Commitments: $1,939,092 Endowment Commitments: $3,342,363 Total Support:

t is an honor to have a place in this report of the remarkable year that University School of Nashville enjoyed in 2013-2014. It was remarkable academically, with the accomplished class of 2014 going across the country to a carefully selected 66 colleges. It was remarkable athletically, with 9 teams advancing to their state tournaments. Finally, it was remarkable philanthropically, with the Annual Fund contributing more than $1.3MM, another record, and the Centennial Building Project bringing in $2MM. We also gained support for endowment and program, including our second faculty teaching chair, a set of endowed scholarships for need-based financial aid, and support for new academic and program initiatives. Thanks to my predecessor, Gail Carr Williams, my first year as president of USN’s Board of Trustees has taken place within the strong framework of a committed and hard-working Board. We turned our attention to planning for the celebration of the school’s Centennial, with Teri Doochin Kasselberg ’73 chairing that effort.
Not many people would have been willing to undertake such a project on such a short timetable, but this group managed it, and we cut the ribbon on the new entrance a mere ten months after we broke ground, with school continuing during much of the construction. We all owe thanks to the faculty and students whose routines and classes were disrupted for weeks at a time and to you for your patience while we disrupted routines great and small. The Board continues to be grateful for the leadership of Vince Durnan, who has seized the opportunity of the Centennial year to focus all our efforts anew, philanthropically and educationally. Looking back at the school’s first century has reminded us of the importance of having a careful and strategic plan for the next century, and the board is committed to doing the work necessary to meet the challenges that lie ahead. We will continue to set ambitious goals for fundraising, and we will work to strengthen community partnerships, explore our curricular options, and build a sustainable educational and financial model.
From the Board
We all owe a debt of gratitude to the Building and Grounds Committee for their dedication and energy and the countless hours they spent seeing the Centennial Building Project through to completion.

25 Years of Giving | The George Peabody Society
T
hough we are at least a generation removed from George Peabody, whose philanthropy made possible the George Peabody College for Teachers little more than a century ago, we can’t forget that without him there would have been no Peabody Demonstration School. Without PDS, we’d have no USN.
was the most faithful alumnus to attend reunion. In the 1990s he devoted many hours to work on what has since become the archives of PDS and USN. Note that the youngest alumna on this list, Gail Gordon Jacobs ’88, graduated more than fifty years after Mr. Ernst.
Our George Peabody Society honors those who have made USN a philanthropic priority for at least a quarter of a century. The list below includes alumni, parents of alumni, and current parents, thirty-six families in 2013-2014.
Other new names on the list include USN teachers Jan Honsberger, Marc Lavine, Pat Miletich, Doni Princehorn, Peg Williams, and Judy Yeaworth (along with their husbands). We also note retired teachers Beth Interlandi and Alys Venable and former librarian Jill Eisenstein, continuing their generosity well beyond the years when they came to work here every day.
That total almost doubles the number of names who appeared on the list last year. It’s fitting that so many people continued their long commitments to giving to University School the year before we began celebrating our Centennial. Chief among those newcomers to the list is Benjamin Ernst ’36, whose ties to the school stretch back to the days when the institution was young. His contributions have been more than financial. Until recent years, he Mr. Gentry Barden & Mrs. Rachel Lukens Barden ’80 Mr. Weaver Barksdale Mrs. Priscilla FitzGerald Baumann ’54 Dr. & Mrs. Raymond Burk Dr. Samuel Dillard ’56 Mr. & Mrs. Robert Doochin ’58 Dr. William Dupont & Dr. Susan Dupont Dr. & Mrs. Michael Ebert Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Eisenstein ’66 Mr. Benjamin Ernst ’36

We like seeing the list grow every year, knowing that nothing means more than the support of those who have known us a long time. We are grateful for these continuing votes of confidence.

he construction project completed this summer is the biggest here since this building was opened in 1925, and we are proud of the work that has gone into every square inch. We’ve renovated 42,000 square feet and added an 8,000 square foot new entrance and addition on the north side of the school. We now have five floors of the hardest-working teaching spaces possible on Edgehill Avenue. Our architect Manuel Zeitlin ’72 and his team created the inspired design, and our construction crew, led by Quick Foy and Building and Grounds chair Burgin Dossett, squeezed an 18-month project into little more than 10 months.

When you visit campus, please wander through the new connector between the pool and Cheek Gym, made possible by an anonymous gift from a USN family. Ever wondered where the bookstore is and just gave up because you got lost trying to find it? Well, search no more, it’s just inside the new entrance, and it’s spectacular. We’re grateful to Gail and Jeff Jacobs for making this new space possible. At the grand entrance, a new plaza welcomes you from the parking lot to this new front door. The Plaza is named after the May family, with both current students and generations of alumni. In the 1930s, when the building was still new, Dan and Dorothy May sent their children Jack ’47 and Betsy May Stern ’51 to Peabody Demonstration School. The children and grandchildren followed at both PDS and USN, and we are honored to remain an educational home to the May and Stern families all these years later. usn100.org

The Robert K. Zelle Society
D
uring their lives, most people look beyond their families to invest their time in the causes they believe in—educational, cultural, religious, environmental, and others. Many people also look for a way to continue this commitment after their deaths. The Robert K. Zelle Society was established to recognize USN’s generous benefactors who leave a legacy to USN through a planned gift. Your bequest to USN could endow a scholarship, a faculty chair of excellence, or perhaps a fund for professional development. The possibilities for building a lasting relationship with the school you trust are endless. We are indebted to those families listed here who have shown such a profound degree of commitment to the mission of University School of Nashville. Their dedication and planning help ensure USN’s continued excellence and make sure that the school can continue to put students first. If you are interested in exploring a planned gift, please contact the USN Development Office at 615/329-4423. We would be happy to share additional information with you.

It’s About People | Bill & Sandy Spitz
B
ill and Sandy Spitz have strong ties to USN. Their daughters (Lauren ’97, Katherine ’01, and Carrie ’04) are all alumnae with a total of 38 years here among them. Sandy served on the Board of Trustees and as president of USNA. Bill was president of the Board and did important work on its Finance Committee. (Then he was Treasurer of Vanderbilt University, managing their assets and endowment. He is now principal and co-founder of Diversified Trust, a wealth management company.) Along with the many hours they have given the school as volunteers, they have also been strong philanthropic supporters from the beginning. While much has changed in Bill and Sandy’s lives since Lauren began first grade back in 1985—they expect their first grandchild early next year—they haven’t changed their minds about what is important. Sandy says, “Supporting faculty development has been a priority for us. That’s where we have always focused.” In The Campaign for Arts & Letters, when the Hassenfeld Library was built, their gift was directed toward a workroom for teachers. “Our people are what make this place special—and our programs and the ability to be flexible within these programs.” Bill agrees. Their relationship with USN is “a continuing evolution…but it’s still about people.” Bill and Sandy are endowing a fund that will allow teachers to find new ways to renew their inspiration. They know that their daughter Carrie chose teaching as her profession “because of USN.” They know the importance of rewarding and inspiring our teachers. “We’ve been talking about it for years, but now is the time to work on
building the endowment,” says Bill. He is proud of the progress University School has made in the last twenty-five years, becoming “mainstream, well-respected, broad, and diverse.” The new endowment fund the Spitzes are creating will allow USN teachers to do all kinds of things. “We have a lot of master teachers who have been here a long time. Our hope is that this fund will allow them to get their batteries recharged and bring new inspiration to their classrooms.” This new endowment will make a difference in the lives of teachers for years to come, and thus in the lives of countless future students. But Sandy and Bill have another idea as well: a legacy gift to University School. Bill is a proponent of planned gifts. “A lot of people can’t write a big check up front, but they can give more with a planned gift.” It’s like sowing seeds which mature at various times, he says. This seed is a life insurance policy with USN and the YMCA as the beneficiaries. “Down the road two charities will get a big benefit for my relatively small annual contribution. I write a check once a year to pay the premium, and that’s it.” It’s an easy way to play a role in the future of the institution that has been so important in their lives and the lives of their daughters.

Endowment
Endowments make the most powerful and lasting impact on our institution. Held in perpetuity, these funds generate support for scholarships, faculty excellence, educational programs, and facility enhancements and maintenance. Endowments are USN’s permanent “savings account,” prudently invested to grow over time. A small portion of the fund’s earnings paid out on an annual basis is used to operate the school. How does a strong endowment help USN? A gift for endowment demonstrates a longterm commitment to USN and links past, current, and future generations. A strong endowment enables USN to maintain and enhance the quality of education in perpetuity. What is the value of USN’s endowment? Our endowment is under conscientious management of the investment committee of USN’s Board of Trustees. At $13,998,080 as of June 30, 2014, USN’s endowment is relatively modest compared to that of our local and national peer schools. How can a gift be made to USN’s endowment? Named funds can be established for gifts that meet specific thresholds for scholarships, faculty development, programs, or facilities. Such endowments, which may bear your name or your family’s, reflect your interests and serve as an enduring testament to your generosity.

Math Teachers Get Inspired | Doug Crane & Lisa Hutson
A
summer math conference at Phillips Exeter Academy gave two high school math teachers plenty of new ideas to bring back to their classrooms.
Doug Crane says, “The most fun thing was being a student again. It was nice for one week to go to these classes and just be a student. No planning, just doing homework.” Luckily for his math students, Doug’s idea of fun is being in math class, getting ideas to bring back to his USN AP Statistics classroom. “In stats, we were counting beads and looking at baseball data, and it was interesting, a lot of ideas that I will use this year.” Next semester Doug plans to try using the beads as a way to make an inference problem easier for the students to understand. As he explains it, one bin of beads in the classroom might be 40% red and 60 % white. “The kids sample, scooping out the beads with bead counters that scoop out 50 at a time. You want to see what the true percentage is. It’s a very hands-on inference problem.” Doug also took a class that he describes as “unique and interesting problems in precalculus.” In his precalculus class, Doug will try a trigonometric modeling project that looks at temperatures in Nashville and temperatures in a Southern hemisphere city.
Doug’s colleague Lisa Hutson also attended the conference, bringing back inspiration to her advanced geometry and precalculus classrooms. In addition to the benefits of sharing ideas with the other teachers in the classes she took at Exeter, Lisa looks forward to trying “a new approach to transformations” and letting her students try “several rich geometry problems” she learned there. “I think the greatest benefit to my geometry students will be meaty problems that they can sink their teeth into.” One such problem is a twist on the familiar “Goats on a Rope” series for both geometry and precalculus students. A goat is tethered to a rectangular barn at a fixed point, and students calculate the area of grass the goat could graze, Lisa explains. “But the class over the summer expanded the problem by introducing a runner allowing the goat to slide along the perimeter of buildings of various shapes and graze more area.” For both of these teachers, spending part of their summers in a classroom with other math teachers meant returning to USN renewed and inspired, thanks to the Debbie Davies Endowed Teaching Fund.

Time Travel Comes to Fifth Grade | Spitz Family Endowed Teaching Fund
G
eography study is not what it used to be. Now GIS (Geographic Information System) gives students access to current data, providing them new ways to analyze and interpret maps.
This summer fifth grade social studies teacher Connie Fink went to the annual conference of the National Council for Geographic Education. It offered so many interesting sessions for teachers that she says, “I felt torn wanting to be in three different places at one time!” She explored the cloud-based ArcGIS Online, which along with Google Maps allows students to “time travel,” exploring historical landscapes. Fink says, “The idea is for students to become geo-literate, looking for patterns in real time, like where people live and why.”
“It’s about understanding the complexity of our world.” She also learned about National Geographic’s new resources that offer educators map-based materials designed to build spatial thinking skills. Their mobile friendly technologies allow students to create and share their own map-based, multimedia geo-tours. In addition to the GIS concept, sessions included activities using literature to make connections to reading, primary sources, and maps. “I felt like I was making curricular tweaks with each session I attended.” Fink says. “For instance, this year in our Civil Rights unit, I plan to incorporate the Green Book (1936-1964), which helped AfricanAmerican automobile travelers identify accommodations during the
Jim Crow era. The session showcased teaching strategies using the Green Book, a primary source, and the picture book Ruth and the Green Book in relation to geographic advancements in studying race relations, mobility, and civil rights.” Connie Fink returned from the conference newly aware of “how maps tell stories” and eager to share that understanding with her fifth graders. She was struck by something President Obama said that she read at the conference. “The study of geography is more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world.”

SN’s nationally-recognized College Counseling office has received a generous gift that will enhance its ability to help all students at USN make informed college choices. Greer McCurley ’97, whose children will not begin thinking about college for another decade, has donated money to endow the Janet Carney Schneider College Counseling Fund.
leges, even the college they are going to attend. With Greer’s contribution, we can create the opportunity for each student to visit at least one to two colleges.”
By Greer’s senior year, Janet Schneider had been leading USN’s college counseling office for two decades, having begun the program a mere two years after she came to work here straight from Vanderbilt University. Until 2003, she was the school’s only college counselor, and the program reflects her philosophy of helping students learn how to make good decisions and set goals.
“Every time I think about how many students will benefit in such a meaningful way from his gift, it brings tears to my eyes,” she adds.
Greer says, “I decided to make the gift in recognition of Janet after observing a friend’s daughter go through the college admissions process. This girl should have been a fantastic applicant, as she had strong grades, extracurricular activities, and test scores. However, she received little assistance in the college admissions process. She didn’t apply to the right universities and was only accepted by her last choice school. Her ordeal caused me to reflect on my own experience at USN, and I realized how fortunate I was to have the guidance Janet and her team offered. The influence she has had on my life and on those of thousands of other students is extraordinary.” This new fund will enable students whose families could not otherwise afford the expense of travel to visit colleges as they make their decisions. Janet says, “He is making one of my dreams come true: there are a few students at USN who are financially unable to visit any col-
Greer says, “Choosing a college is the first major life decision a high school senior will make, and the process can be overwhelming. Thankfully, Janet has an extensive knowledge of the country’s colleges and universities. When this knowledge is combined with the personal relationship she develops with college bound seniors, Janet is able to help students identify a list of schools ideally suited for them. She then guides them through each college’s unique admissions process so that students are in the best possible position to succeed.” Greer Mc Curley, a graduate of Yale University, lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Olivia (7) and Thomas (4).

From the Alumni Board | Ellie McCarley Keiper ’95
I
have been pleased to be part of the PDS/USN Alumni Board for the last eight years. During each of my years as a member of the Alumni Board, I have witnessed more and more alumni participating in the current activities of USN. Each former student who participates in school life casts a vote of confidence in the faculty, staff, and students. We have more opportunities than ever for alumni to be active at USN. This year the Alumni Board hosted more than 75 recent graduates at our Young Alumni Party and more than 125 alumni at our All Alumni Party. In addition to attending these and other social and networking opportunities presented by the Alumni Board and the Alumni & Development Office, many alumni can be found serving in volunteer roles on campus. Alumni teach Evening Classes, help to organize our archival materials, and plan campus events. We are tapping the diverse experience and wealth of knowledge of our alumni in more ways than ever. We have invited many alumni to speak to our current students. Our recent alumni speakers included our Distinguished Alumnus, selected to offer advice to the graduating seniors at Convocation based on his or her lifetime personal and professional achievement. The Alumni Board selected Del Bryant ’66 for this honor in 2014. The President of Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI)
26
shared tales of his rich musical heritage and insight into the future of music with the seniors and their families gathered for Convocation. 2013-2014 was also a record year for alumni participation in the Annual Fund. The Alumni Board led the way by reaching 100% participation in the Annual Fund very early in the school year. We finished the year with 22% of alumni making an Annual Fund donation. Each gift to the Annual Fund is a show of support for the mission of the school, and we are pleased to see more and more of our alumni participating in this annual effort. Looking forward, 2014-2015 offers even more occasions for alumni participation. Alumni play an important role in USN’s Centennial Celebration. Many of our alumni have been actively engaged on the planning committees for our yearlong lineup of events, and we hope you will join the celebration in some way. Visit usn100.org for a complete list of Centennial Events and make your plans to participate now. This year marks the end of my two year term as Alumni Board President. I offer my wholehearted support to the Alumni Board’s incoming leadership—Derek McLaren ’87 (President) and Jennifer Simmons McGugin ’96 (Vice-President). It has been my honor to serve in this capacity, and I look forward to many more years as a volunteer (and parent) at USN.

Do You Remember? The Class of 1964 Celebrates 50th Reunion The PDS Class of 1964 began its weekend at the home of Bobby and Pam Chilton on Friday evening, where just about all 25 classmates present laughed and talked at once for over three hours! Stories of our exploits, many involving our favorite teachers, brought smiles to all of our faces, and occasionally some serious belly laughs! Innumerable sentences began with, “Do you remember the time that. . . ?” At USN on Saturday, we enjoyed lunch and had our class photo taken. Hard-hat tours of current work in progress around the building showed us that the bones of our dear old school remain. That evening we gathered again at the remarkable log home of Susan Hammonds-White and her husband, Walter. At the end of the evening, there were hugs and fond farewells, and expressions of hope for many more times together in the future. We missed our dear friend and class favorite Judy Graves. On a happier note, some local classmates continue to meet once a month for lunch, welcoming others who can be present when in town. The PDS Class of 1964 plans to make good memories together for many more years. We look forward to our reunions, especially in 2015 to celebrate the 100th anniversary. Sandra Stone Merritt ’64

The McCharen Society k The McCharen Society recognizes those who increase their gift to USN’s Annual Fund from the previous year. This donor distinction is named for Knox McCharen, Director of PDS from 1951-1968 and one of the school’s most beloved leaders. While any increase qualifies for recognition, we encourage you to consider 5% as a sustainable commitment that is significant over time. In its eleventh year, 1,065 donors joined the McCharen Society by increasing their gifts or by giving to USN for the first time. A Sense of Place | Freya Sachs ’00, High School English teacher
T
eaching writing and literature courses, I so often find myself returning to place, and I’ve come to realize how intertwined my understanding of place and text is. In my seminar on Literature of Cities, I found myself teaching the texts of places I had never seen. This summer, I had the opportunity to visit, explore and inhabit three of those cities—Dublin, Paris, and London. Two key moments particularly interest me: the Modern moment of the 1920s and the changing nature of place and text in today’s world. I have been interested in exploring key literary sites of interest in both moments in those three cities. Thanks to the Meador Travel Fellowship, this summer I immersed myself in this project. When people ask about my trip, I say that I walked. I walked along Leopold Bloom’s path from Ulysses as I explored Dublin, from the Martello tower in Sandycove to St. Stephen’s Green, Sweny’s Pharmacy, and breakfast at Bewley’s Oriental Café. Dublin may be the city that most celebrates writing—from the Dublin Writers Museum, the National Library and its exhibit on W.B. Yeats and the Joyce quotes on the sidewalk—and it surprised and delighted me at every turn. Paris was what I have seen described in poems: towering buildings, the Opera house with Chagall on the ceiling, streets to lose oneself in, museums and art to explore. I found myself wondering about the many ways the city had changed in the last hundred years, what neighborhoods had developed and what had stayed the same. London brought the neighborhoods of Zadie Smith’s contemporary depictions, Sylvia Plath’s manuscript and a letter from Mary Shelley at the British Library, an awesome room of William Blake’s images, a trip to Virginia Woolf’s home, Monk’s House, in East Sussex—complete with a voyage through “water meadows” on a footpath back towards a train—time at Hampstead Heath, Keats’ house, and more walking. It was over two weeks of walking, exploring, seeing, and absorbing. I was able to reimagine the place through the
lens of the texts and the texts, in turn, in the lens of the place. While the most tangible application of my travels will be in reimagining and teaching the Cities seminar, the travels and experience of immersion in a place influence my teaching each day. Text is never absent of place and context, and a deeper understanding of that—even, for example, in being able to speak more about expatriate writers’ experiences and landscapes abroad as compared to at home in an American Literature course—remains enriching and enlightening. To understand language of a place, and what the complexity of today’s society looks like in literature, I have found the chance to be in a place—whether Faulkner’s Mississippi, Joyce’s Dublin, or Woolf’s London—valuable to my understanding and articulation of it. I feel lucky each day to work at a place where the individual experience and excitement for learning is valued; while I try to cultivate that curiosity and interest in discovery in my classroom, I am lucky to have had so many opportunities for my learning and growth supported—most recently, this one. Returning from this trip, I’m even more excited to talk about literature and writing. I’m tremendously grateful to the Meador Travel Fellowship for providing this opportunity.

and their many team members for their creativity and dedication. We also want to thank Sam Jackson, Anne Westfall, and their Development team. Their support, enthusiasm, and encouragement were invaluable.
hat an amazing year! With your generosity and commitment, the 2013-2014 USN Annual Fund once again set a new record: raising a total of $1,306,000.
As we head into the Centennial Celebration year, Katie and Kevin Crumbo have enthusiastically agreed to chair the 2014-2015 Annual Fund. We know they will do an outstanding job. What an exciting time to be part of this community.
Countless volunteer hours were spent sending emails, making phone calls, and striking up conversations on the sports sidelines or the school hallways. You heard that call to action and you responded! Eighty-two percent of the current parents participated this year. Joining the parents as donors were trustees, faculty and staff members, students, alumni, past parents, and friends who all believe in this outstanding institution. In total we had 1,884 donors for this year’s Annual Fund.

Since its beginning in 1915, USN has had a rich history of academic excellence in a close knit environment with dedicated faculty and engaged students. The opportunities both in and out of the classroom are amazing. The gifts you made to the Annul Fund will not only enrich our children’s education but will also enhance these formative years of their young lives. We give each of you our heartfelt thanks! With warmest regards,
We want to take this opportunity to once again thank the volunteer leadership team for this year’s effort: Leadership Chairs Jane and Erich Groos; New Parent Chairs Amy and Greg Shepard; and Division Chairs McLean and Damon Barbieri and Catherine and Shelton Clark. We thank each of them

We’re especially pleased to note that 526 of these are PDS or USN alumni.

We’re especially pleased to note that 526 of these are PDS or USN alumni.

New Horizons for USN
H
orizons National is an organization which links independent schools with nearby public schools in their communities. The mission is to strengthen public school students’ learning retention and reduce the “summer achievement gap” often faced by children in low income areas. USN is the first independent school in Tennessee to join Horizons. In the summer of 2014, 15 rising first graders from Carter-Lawrence Elementary participated in this six week summer program that blends high quality academics with cultural enrichment and confidence-building activities. In summer 2015 these children will move up a grade level, and a new group of rising first graders will join the program. The cycle will continue for eight years until the program reaches its intended capacity of K-8th grade Horizons students. USN’s Horizons program is led by veteran fourth grade teacher Kim Avington, joined by her USN colleagues kindergarten teachers Jan Honsberger and Christy Plummer. The program is advised by a board of community leaders and educators. Horizons Advisory Board Nancy Crutcher Michael DeBaun Charlene Dewey Frank Dobson, Jr. Eddie Hamilton Florence Kidd Fiona Prine

We are grateful for the generous support that helped launch the USN Horizons Program. A challenge grant from the Care Foundation, matched by individual and additional foundation gifts, provided a sound financial start to this program that will expand each year.

University School of Nashville Association | Caroline Shockley, USNA President 2013-2014
I
t is a pleasure to report the year’s accomplishments of USNA, our volunteer organization. Hundreds of volunteers gave numerous hours, helping USN through service, fundraising and community-building activities. It was a privilege to work with our wonderful faculty, staff, and parent volunteers. Thank you for the opportunity to serve in this tremendous parent organization.
At the heart of every USNA activity is community building. This year we added a Cultural Collaboration Coordinator volunteer to work with USN’s Director of Diversity on events, marketing, and programming to support and highlight the rich diversity of our USN community. The Caring and Concern committee continued their work in all three divisions by helping families, faculty, and staff during times of need. The Dads’ Alliance continued to grow and increase their presence on campus. They grilled food for Fall Fest, worked on the playground, and enjoyed other social events together. The Fall Fest chairs provided a wonderful evening of good food and entertainment that over 500 students, parents, faculty, and staff enjoyed. The High School Hospitality coordinators organized the refreshments for HS Parent Night, and a coffee for the parents of new High School students provided an opportunity to meet other parents and ask questions. Parent Social Coordinators organized parent events for all 13 grades, and USNA provided school directories and calendars to support our school-wide communications and events. Service activities are a large component of the mission of USNA. Art Department Assistant Coordinators volunteer in all three divisions of school. Room parents served in all lower school classrooms, and
56
advisory parents assisted in the middle school. A library volunteer coordinator organized numerous volunteers to assist in the library on a weekly basis. The lower school hospitality committee donated 2,500 desserts for Grandparents Day. The Faculty/Staff Appreciation Chairs hosted a beginning and end of year lunch for our 200 faculty and staff, showing our appreciation for all they do. The lower school and middle school were provided with Helping Hands coordinators and volunteers to assist classrooms. A breakfast for faculty was provided twice for all three divisions of school. Coordinators assisted with the Eighth Grade Breakfast. USNA enjoyed a banner year for our nine fundraising events and booster clubs. These events and clubs, chaired by 20 parent volunteers, raised $184,000. All profits directly benefit designated areas of the school listed on the right. Our booster clubs, TAP and Tiger Club, increased their number of members and continued to grow their outreach for the school’s arts and athletics. In addition to these funds, USNA gave the school a food concession trailer that will be used primarily at the River Campus. As the school embarks upon a year-long Centennial Celebration, USNA will continue its vibrant work under the leadership of Holly Roche. The school is fortunate to have such a capable person leading our incredible parent volunteers. With gratitude,

Lower school teachers attended a workshop on “structured word inquiry” led by Peter Bowers, founder of WordWorks Literacy Center. Victoria Roca, Ellen Hicks, Emily Steffens, Kim Avington, Melissa Sherman, and Amy Noon traveled to Wolfe Island, Ontario to learn more about this instructional approach that lower school has been exploring to teach spelling, reading, and vocabulary. It is supported by a growing body of research that highlights the benefits of morphologically-based instruction for successful literacy outcomes. This professional development experience was made possible by gifts given in memory of Judith Petty, grandparent of Nate ’19 and Russ ’22. University School of Nashville
The River Campus
L
ast April, after attending her fiftieth reunion lunch at USN, Maureen Carr Applebaum ’64 and her husband Rear Admiral Richard Applebaum visited the River Campus. As Maureen wrote to Vince Durnan later, the word “manicured” falls short of describing it. “The grounds are, in our experience, unsurpassed. It seems like every blade of grass has had careful, dedicated, and professional attention,” Maureen wrote, adding that they were “awestruck.”
On their way out they saw Bret Mash, River Campus Director, who was mowing the baseball field. Bret hopped off his tractor, scaled the centerfield fence, and told them about his passion for his work there. “This was a wonderful experience,” Maureen said. Talking to Bret was even better than listening to Vince’s speech at the reunion lunch. So impressed were the Applebaums with Bret Mash’s ambassadorship for the school that Maureen wrote to Vince and sent USN a check in Bret’s honor to be earmarked for the River Campus. That baseball field, Maureen said, is maintained like a major league park.
