Sioux City Explorers Brand Proposal

Although named for a Lewis & Clark discovery, this dark, rich brown color signifies much more than just the root of a plant. Brown ties into all different aspects of the Lewis & Clark expedition, whether it is the wood of the keelboat, or the buckskin clothing so many of the explorers wore. Brown represents the color of the earth, the unknown territory that the Lewis & Clark Expedition was exploring.

Red is a color that has stuck with the Sioux City Explorers throughout all 20 seasons, and that’s not something that’s going to change. Long-time Explorer fans will identify with red and wear it with pride.

Gold has been a part of the Explorers identity in the past, but will be featured much more prominently in this new branding. Of everything Lewis & Clark documented: maps, journals, diagrams of plants and animals; it was all written on golden-tinted parchment. This is another important tie-in to the Sioux City Explorers’ namesake.

USHERING IN A NEW ERA of Explorer baseball, this logo captures the spirit and the essence of a true explorer. Facing west, looking toward unknown and unmarked territory. Featuring smooth curves to convey a sense of motion, the oval shape of the primary logo works well when placed beneath the strong, arching Explorers wordmark.

“THE X’s” is a term everybody knows. It has been the team’s nickname since their inception, as has the iconic “X” logo. The X stays in the new identity, but this time with a facelift. This modern interpretation of the X now features a compass rose, something that was surely an integral part of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The new X is something that will be loved by Explorer fans old and new.

The focal point of any great baseball uniform is the team name across the chest. Featuring an all-new font, these scripts were designed to grace the Explorers uniforms for years to come.

The main goal of the new branding is to streamline the Explorers look across all uniforms. The red stripe on the brown undershirt ties in with the red of the wordmarks. The “brown-red-brown” pattern continues onto the pants, giving them a classic three-striped look. The biggest change here is the use of gold in the away uniforms. While other teams will sport the same tired gray look, the Explorers will make a statement on the road. The SIOUX CITY script makes sure that other fans won’t forget where the Explorers come from.
