Deep Dive and Understory are two of three publicly accessible spaces at the street-level of the Amazon Spheres. Both projects were fast-paced ventures, advancing from concept design to competed construction documents in less than 6 months, with high levels of coordination required for each project. Understory is a mutli-use event space that can be transformed from it’s exhibit layout to an open-floor event space in less than one day. Deep Dive is a bar providing high-end cocktails and a one-of-a-kind collection curated by local artist Curtis Steiner. Each space came with massive ductwork spanning the ceiling that feeds the plants in the Spheres above. In Deep Dive, the entry was 5’-6” above the floor of the bar, which meant ramps were a required component of the design. Both projects were documented using Revit. Understory began construction in July 2017, and opened with The Spheres on January 29, 2018. Deep Dive opened in August 2018.

Nordstrom restaurant DEsign Natick, MA & San Antonio, TX Graham Baba Architects

As Nordstrom is renovating retail locations across the country, the in-store cafe and restaurants are receiving much needed updates as well. In the Natick, Massachusetts (near Boston), and San Antonio, Texas locations, the client asked to leave most of the existing infrastructure in place, but give the space a refresh. In Natick, existing mahogany paneling dominated the space, and were to be retained at the clients request. Through various iterations, the design landed on an aesthetic that brought lighter tones into the once dark space. Mahogany panels will be sanded and stained, new fixtures and custom furniture will bring modern touches, and casework detailing that reflects retained elements will harmonize new and old. Upon completion, these renovations will more accurately reflect Nordstrom’s current design values and serve as a precedent for other restaurant refreshes moving forward.

Daniel’s broiler Downtown - Seattle, WA Graham Baba Architects

Graham Baba Architects was chosen by Daniel’s Broiler to design their first new restaurant in more than a decade. The clients wanted a space that offered the classic comfort of their existing restaurants, but with modern design cues and detailing. The material palette consists of dark woods and leather, with highlights from brass detailing, white table tops, and pops of color coming from movable furniture.

Mind the Gap- Undergraduate Thesis San Francisco, CA Advisor: Ansgar Killing

Our cities exist in fragments - districts. They thrive in their fragmentation; each part of the city offers its own identity and personality that makes it unique within the larger context. All of these fragments coexist and mix at their communal edges - creating smooth transitions from one to another. These edges create our experience of the city and tie it together as a bricolage. As districts change and grow, they adjust for their neighbors to maintain a connection to one another.

Site - Tenderloin, SF

Extrude form

How can architecture act as a mediator on this border? What kind of architecture can be implemented that negotiates the disjointed relationship of this urban border?

Bar typology - connect sides

Porous ground level connects plaza

Due to the stark differences in lifestyle, culture, and day-today activities on either side of this border, this project takes the stance of softening this transition from bustling Market Street to the corner of Turk & Taylor; from Downtown San Francisco to the heart of the Tenderloin. The main program includes a food market offering fresh foods and rotating stalls for new restaurants to occupy, an adult education center, and a hostel. Other program includes event spaces, galleries, and 24/7 accessible programs. By treating the project and programs as divisible objects instead of solid blocks, opportunities for otherwise unlikely interactions and encounters come to the surface.

Adjust to create plazas

Appropriate street for pedestrians

However, this transformation rarely happens cohesively throughout the city. Some districts inevitably get left behind, and over time, they never catch up and only fall farther into despair. A piece of the city that no longer operates with the greater bricolage of the city.

Bellahøj Transit Hub Copenhagen, DK Advisor: Rune Veile

The Bellahøj Transit Hub strives to not only simplify public transit, but also provide a public space for an area of Copenhagen that lacks it. The site lies at the wedge of an intersection located above a major highway leading into central Copenhagen. This intersection also serves as a major thoroughfare for bikes, buses and pedestrians. All of this movement from fast traffic creates a dangerous environment for slower pedestrian traffic. The new Bellahøj Transit Hub consolidates the existing transit options and makes accommodations for the expanding metro network, parking for over 750 cars to encourage use of public transportation into central Copenhagen, and offers a unique pedestrian experience in a neighborhood of Copenhagen that doesn’t offer any space for urban life. The pedestrian plaza sits between the two main functions of the site - parking and transit - creating a protected zone to occupy and move through. The majority of the footprint is parking, but special consideration is given to the pedestrian experience by concealing parking under a layer of mixed program. This includes shopping, cafés and restaurants, offices and studios, and a community space with a view to downtown Copenhagen on the top floor. The whole project is defined by a simple diagram, where pedestrians occupy the space exposed to the sun, and the required functions lie under the surface.

Bar 5

New York City, New York Advisor: Tom Fowler Located in the South Bronx neighborhood of New York City, this large site crawls down a steep hill, offering street access from two sides and enjoying view of lower manhattan. The various program elements were divided the along the length of the site, creating four bars. Taking inspiration from the surrounding area’s demographic, the living tower is placed on the more industrial side of the site to promote a more active edge, while the grocer, community kitchen, and cafe are placed on the more residential side to provide easy access to the whole community, with the office space, day-care, and performance space in the between. To further bring the project together, bridges spanning the plazas between each building a single, common ambulatory space augmented by large atria at the core of each building. With this, the fifth bar was created. With its system of bridges, bars, and atria, Bar5 comes together as a whole. The project provides a diverse, yet continuous set of programs for the redeveloping South Bronx community. Developed with Conor Beck

Playground For Culture Copenhagen, DK Advisor: Bo Christiansen

The new Playground for Culture strives to create a destination for the growing Ørestad neighborhood in Copenhagen. The area is known for its notable architecture, but is rarely visited by people not living in the neighborhood. The Bibiana Culture House creates a hub for culture and play that any age group can take part in. The spatial organization comes from the idea of a modern Danish playground; objects scattered in a field, versus a traditional ‘big toy’ playground, where there is one central object. Breaking up the program also creates intermediate plazas that allow for spontaneous activities. The whole building, including the plinth and roof canopy, is wrapped in Silver Fir. This gives the project a light aesthetic from the ground level while maintaining the view of the park that the surrounding apartments cherish so much.

Omni

City Street Advisor: Ansgar Killing Born from the idea of making the street a more livable place, Omni is designed to give the user a different idea of how street furniture effects the frame of the city. The initial design idea was to create a piece of furniture that made the street a more livable zone for the every day user. That idea transformed into a more conceptual approach to what street furniture does for the user and how they interact with it. What if the furniture had a response to the users? How would it react? How could it change a city dweller’s view of the city? Omni is born from a familiar piece of street furniture - a city bench. Starting with a standard bench, the shape is manipulated in 3-dimensions. The form is adjusted so the users are neither sitting parallel nor perpendicular to the sidewalk. With the triangular form offers perspective views down the sidewalk rather than having only one viewing angle. There is no correct orientation, leaving the position of the piece to the choice of the user. The informal shape is matched by the informal material - styrofoam. Being soft and lightweight, Omni can be a mobile part of the urban environment. The level variations and manipulated shape create the feeling that users are farther away from each other, when in reality they’re within each others’ personal space. The “personal space” zone is a 4’-10’ circle around an individual. On a flat, mono-directional bench, unrelated users will position themselves as far away from one another as possible. On Omni, the shorter distance between users is perceived as a more comfortable distance due to level changes and triangular form.
