ABOVE THE STREET: SCENARIO 4 CONNECTIVE SKY BRIDGES USING AGENT BASED DESIGN 2016 - 2017 IN PROGRESS Graduate Thesis Urban Design Midtown, Manhattan As cities continue to evolve into areas of dense population and built environment, there is a growing disengagement between the people living in cities and the urban fabric of collective buildings that is meant to connect them. This is a consequence of the majority of public interactions taking place on the ground level, with little potential to interact with the built environment above them. In order to connect with the vertically of Manhattan this investigation is proposing to create a new elevated city grid connecting people, buildings, and public spaces. Design development is based on research conducted involving designing bottom up agent based systems that create connections to disengaged areas of buildings within Midtown, Manhattan. The agents in these systems engage with buildings ultimately reengaging people and buildings at the upper level of the city. This will give rise to a diversification of program sectionally throughout city blocks. The end goal of this thesis is meant for people to begin to perceive buildings in densified cities as not just a facade but an inhabitable space ultimately giving buildings more worth to the public.

8

Urban Engagement The design methodology for the swarm urbanism scenario begins through uncovering major influential elements within the city; public areas, greenspaces, and areas of transportation. simulations are run where agents interact with other agents, previously drawn trails, and attractor points. Through these

design parameters the agent based system is interacting with Midtown and will create an emergent system that is site specific. Through simulations many scenarios can be created and tested by examining the agent to agent interaction as well as the overall interaction of the city swarm

Connor Hymes

9

Agent Based Design: City Block Scale In design iterations at this scale, the orthogonal movement of agents and rectangular shape of the agents are a consistent part of the design methodology while designing in the city. The movement will allow for easier movement around buildings and works with the rational design choice of creating rectangular

extrusions to connect to floors of buildings. This design methodology creates formal hierarchy within the design that is representative of the initial forces that the urban swarm scenarios reacts to within Midtown and the agent to agent interaction with trails at the city block scale.

10

Agent Based Design: Building Scale At this scale of design there is a more intensified relationship between the agents and the connected buildings. Agents are simulated over the meshes created at the scale of the city block to create possible path, skin, or structural architectural elements.

Connor Hymes

11

Scenario 4 This scenario specifically engages the Comcast Building at Rockefeller Center moving outwards to buildings of interest. Using all scales of design to implement these agent based connections as a connective sky bridge system that facilitates the engagement of buildings in the upper areas of the city.

To be continued.

COLUMBUS ATHENAEUM CONNECTING THROUGH RAISING Fall 2014 Integrated Building Systems Art Studio/Museum Columbus, Indiana Taking a look at the city fabric, the most beneficial strategy to enhance the city and activate this site as a public center was to bring the people into the building through a straightforward public connection. The building systems integrate through the idea of lifting and blending into the building. This site as a public center brings the people into the building through a straightforward public connection. Moving north to south along the main publicly activated street the building is elevated above the ground. The auditorium becomes true to its’ function and exposes its’ shape to the public creating an even more drastic entrance alongside the street. As you move through the building, A light atrium bring you through the building allowing for circulation and natural light to penetrate the main programmatic functions off the building. The building systems integrate through the idea of lifting and blend into the building. Two concrete cores run vertically through the building creating centralized areas for emergency egress, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing functions.

15

Current Street Typology

The current street typology is comprised of different commercial buildings on the west and an unused parking lot on the east. There is a connection through the space but nothing on the site itself. The proposed street typology allows for a continuation of the connection through the site. It also creates the opportunity for a new public concentration of space for arts. The site is located almost at the intersection of these two spaces making it an important cultural location in Coulombs for locals living in the area and tourists visiting the area.

Proposed Street Typology

The connection/passage between uptown and downtown Columbus, Indiana is an important part to the success and flow between the spaces. Uptown has more residential buildings and offices while downtown has mostly retail and shops on the ground level. Washington street serves as the main connection between these two areas. The site is located almost at the intersection of these two spaces making it an important cultural location for Coulombs for locals living in the area and tourists visiting the area.

16

PROGRAM arranging the program according to spatial hierarchy in correlation to the public/private relationship to the street.

RAISE connection to the public through raising the privatized elements above the ground. ground level becomes a public level alongside the publicly activated the street

LIGHT a light atrium penetrates the public and private programmatic elements and also becomes the main vertical connection to the gallery spaces

CONNECT a connection is created through the use of movement through the street into the building becoming a more integrated interpretation of a connection.

NATIONAL SAILING HALL OF FAME ENGAGING THE WATERFRONT Spring 2013 Competition Studio Museum Annapolis, Maryland My proposal for the National Sailing Hall of Fame was a combination of my passion for sailing and architecture. Combining the three main aspects of sailing (wind, water, and craft) with architectural movements (connect, shift, and separate), I was able to ‘capture the sail’ from my experiences and relate them to architecture, space, and experiences. The collage depicts the chaos of the sail moving towards a moment and the dock emerges , extending into the beyond. The parti development takes the architectural movements and merges them with the collage wind, water, and craft become not only sailing terms but terms that relate to the initial architectural design movements of this building. The materiality of the programmatic exhibition buildings are developed from their relationship to the water. The water takes on dark and light aspects throughout the sea and the material mimics that allowing for more public and private exhibition elements.

Shift mimicking the movements of water shifting alongside the boat

Separate create a connection to the public by separating the galleries

Building design began with collages capturing the emotions evoked by sailing and waterfront culture in Annapolis. The chaotic aspects of sails ropes and masts, a moment occurs and a dock extrudes into the open. This collage helped me visualize an image for my building, through process of interpretation of aspects of sailing and nature.

Shift movement between spaces creating diverse exhibition spaces

Connect connect the exhibition spaces to circulate throughout

26

The open arrangement of the programmatic spaces allows for a variety of interchangeable space uses. Lower towards the ground the program reflects more frequently used spaces like education while the top auditorium is used for special screenings of films and races. The central dock is the spine of the museum that connects

people from each exhibition building space and towards the water. The dock presents images of inductees in the national sailing hall of fame, hanging on its wood structure. The images progress from past inductees in the start of the promenade and will add future inductees towards the end of the dock. This gives potential for the dock to expand further into the water, as a living part of Annapolis’ edge.

HUDSON RIVER RESEARCH TOWER CONNECTIVE NETWORKS BETWEEN BUILDINGS Spring 2016 Vertical Studio High Rise Research Facility High Line, New York Located on the High Line, NY, the Hudson River Water Research Tower becomes a living part of New York and the nature that surrounds it by connecting people, program, infrastructure and water through a series of aggregational cell units. The building itself is derived from an interpretation architectural autopoiesis, using copy paste techniques that creates radical vertical propositions generated by the fragmentation of existing tower types and their re assembly in a collective. The Water Research Tower is in a state of constant motion, transporting water in and out of the three main tanks within the heart of the tower where the testing and research is conducted. The base of the tower is a collective of cell units with different programmatic systems intermingling, as you move upward through the tower the cells become more compact and begin to create a cohesive system surrounding the tanks of water.

32

Diagrams of Interiority: Copy Paste

Vertical Slice

Copy and paste techniques were generated by the fragmentation of existing condominium towers types and their reassembly in a collective. The source of inspiration is found from the surreal culture of New York itself.

While employing cross programming within the existing “verticalscapes, a new form of urbanism emerges. A combination of these studies is shown as a final vertical slice. A connection element along the high line that will implement programmatic interventions in between and through buildings.

33

Pattern Extraction

Cell Aggregation

From the previous combination drawing a pattern is extracted and 3 dimensionalised in paper and aggregation. This ornament based organization creates a scalable framework indicative of inherently rigorous and efficient possible urban arrangements. A structural system is then created that is able to adjust and mutate endlessly function to context.

This pattern cell is reiterated digitally adding mass and volume to the paper skeleton. This digital cell is then aggregated and departs from the previous paper model as it continues with development utilizing parametric design development environments.

34

Diagrams of Exteriority

Cell Unit Variation

Three cell types (connect, contain, inhabit) are the base units for the urban tower expansion. These are interpretations of the cell aggregate allowing for a structural system that is able to adjust to the changing city context

The cell unit, as an adjustable structural framework, can influence the scale of the each space as they emerge and combine as complete units within the tower.

The design for the GE Headquarters combines heritage and innovation; the industrial makeup of the neighborhood with the digital movement that the area is evolving into. The project consists of three buildings, two existing brick buildings to be renovated and the new GE building. The GE building connects to the existing buildings through a skybridge that connects the 6th floor of the GE building to the roof of the existing buildings.

The exterior of the GE building has a facade of solar panels from the 6th floor curving over the roof. The interior of the GE building offers a range of settings and social spaces. The vertical village is the main stair that connects floors providing a central focal point for informal and formal collaboration. It allows for an interconnected town square experience to support the community building.

595 MARKET STREET BOHLIN CYWINSKI JACKSON Fall 2015 Architectural Internship San Francisco, California This architectural internship consisted of working on three projects with three different teams. Each project varies in size and typology, I played a different role in each project. My part on these teams consisted of: - Schematic design iterations of a lobby space and ceiling -Assisted with client presentations - Design and documentation of a full scale lobby mock - up - Final renderings - Design and final physical model construction - Set up a project in Revit - Design diagrams for space perception - Architectural drawings and diagrams Software: Autocad, Revit, Rhinoceros, Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Vray, Laser Cutting

This lobby renovation and redesign of 595 Market Street began by using the existing conditions as an opportunity to enhance the user experience and create an exciting ceiling expression. This design carved as much as possible into the area between the bottom of structural members and the void above to create a vertically bigger and more impressive space. At the time faceted ceilings and fin ceilings were popular in new lobby renovation techniques. The combination of fins and a faceted ceiling above

begins to create a dialogue between the consistent datum of fins and the unrhythmic folding of the ceiling above. The choice of creating random folds in the ceiling was due to the fact that the design did not want to be restricted by the structural members as it became a mystery behind the rhythmic datum of the fins. Bronze is used on the main wall as well as the exterior sign relating to the existing bronze trim on the building.
