W elcome
to the 2023 Joint Venture Bull Sale
At the time of writing these opening remarks we have gone through a nice warm stretch and the days of a brutally cold December are hopefully behind us The feed pile isn’t going down quite as fast and hopefully the utility bills won’t be so high in the coming months either
Advertisement
We have had a good year here at the ranch with David and Gail still having an active involvement with day to day operations It is a blessing that our kids get to spend so much time with the “Over the Hill” Grandparents The kids had a great year showing their cattle this year and taking part in a lot of Junior Activities Highlights included Ryder winning his first buckle with his Wilbar Emulota Heifer and Reese placing Third Overall at the Summer Synergy Multi Species Judging Contest as a 15 year old against competitors up to 6 years older than her THomas is excited to be starting a new job as the Sports and Agriculture Reporter at CITL Prime Time Local News in LLoydminster
The world is changing in a political way that we may not agree with, but are going to have to deal with It may not make sense that decreasing commercial fertilizer use is going to fix any problems, but, with perception being reality in our society, we are going to have to do our part to change how we do things to continue to provide a protein source Carbon sequestration, less commercial fertilizer use, improved soils through grazing, less feeding of grains, less confined feeding systems, are issues that we believe are coming in the future With that in mind we believe that cows can, and will, be tools used to enhance the land, not be a detriment to it It will take a special kind of cow that will do that job though She is going to have to work for us and the land, not the other way around She will have to be fertile enough to conceive every year without supplemental grain She will have to calve on her own, raise an economically viable calf on grass alone, stay healthy, be resilient and trouble free The only way to make that cow is with genetics, culling pressure and removing all crutches
With each year we are trying to remove more of these crutches, cull harder, rely more on grass systems and less on grain systems By doing that we are hoping to set up our customers with bulls that will not only be relatively problem free, but be genetically superior in the functional fertility traits that will make your cowherd profitable in the future
Optimism is strong this year as we see very good prices right now and even better projected for next fall The cowherd is smaller and beef demand is still strong so this cycle should be up for quite some time Now is the time to take advantage of the market and hopefully the weather helps as well Once again we are excited to be working with the Bablitz family from Rainbow Red Angus as co consignors to the sale Kolby Heaven knows their bulls, and possibly ours, backwards and forwards and is ready to answer any questions on the offering As always, all the bulls the sale, from both Towaw and Rainbow, carry our satisfaction guarantee and we are dedicated to placing the right bulls in the right operations
It seems that costs are rising in pretty much every facet of our industry Our summer program is based on the idea of low inputs with the goal of raising more efficient cattle We believe that the long yearling bulls represent cattle that have been culled harder because they have been here longer For you, the buyer, a long yearling bull represents a purchase that has the ability to cover more females He can then also be wintered with your mature bulls as the nutritionally challenging second year of development is already behind him The yearling bulls have come about as our children started showing cattle The kids have been very fortunate to enjoy success with the cattle they show We have tried to balance the lower input summer principles with the higher demands of winter calving cattle Please feel free to come view the bulls any time prior to the sale, we really enjoy visiting with you, our friends and customers If we have learned anything in the last few years it is that people need people, so please plan to come early and stay late and enjoy some food and hospitality with us
Sincerely, The Wildman

ATornado is a long bodied, deep red coloured bull that we purchased a half interest from Duralta Farms as a 3 year old. He sired the high selling bulls in both Duralta and our Sale last year. His daughters are milky, feminine and good footed. His sons have the herdbull look, are long and powerful, and should add performance and maternal quality to our customers calf crops.

We bought Kingman 465F from Hamco Cattle Co. as their leadoff 2 year old bull in their 2021 Sale. He is a larger framed version of the Kingman line, still easy fleshing, big nutted and deep. He is sired by a bull Hamilton’s bought in our Sale that Kirk gave a perfect foot score too, a feat only done once since we have been scoring them. He is also out of a very good Indeed Granddaughter, so there wasn’t a lot of surprises on what he could do. He has maintained moderate BWs, 85 on bulls, 78 on heifers, while adding growth.

Steadfast was our high selling bull in the 2021 Bull Sale to GraTan Farms, Grant and Tanya Chittick, from Mayerthorpe. We used him on a group of heifers as a yearling and he calved easily and we are excited about the daughters that will calve in May. He looks to be a leading sire in Chitticks yearling bull pen this year as well. Big nutted, big bodied and masculine with a great mother, we think Steadfast will be a difference maker for years to come.
RED TOWAW Julian 478G
If you are in the market for an Angus herd sire this year mark your calendar for this years sale highlighting some of the industries best coming from Towaw Cattle Co and Rainbow Red Angus. Forage options were much more plentiful for the 2022/23 feeding season. We tested the forages on farm and from there were able to develop balanced TMR’s for both the bulls and cows to ensure proper growth and development. The cow herds utilize a custom mineral program based on their annual forage results. This supports bull calf development from a young age. The bull feeding programs are built to maximize forage utilization and gut health. These bulls are developed on grass with their moms and then
RED
Julian 478G was a Julian son we used in 2020 on a group of cows and then sold in the 2021 sale to repeat customers, Smoky River Red Angus. He is a very balanced bull that ranks in the top 3% for the Canadian Balanced Index. He had a little more growth and power than his sire while still exhibiting the large scrotal, structural correctness, and maternal qualities that made Julian 72Y such a mainstay in our herd.
SITZ Stellar 726D
FIn our search for a new A.I. sire to use on the black cows, plus a few red ones, we kept hearing about the sons of Sitz Stellar coming out of Montana. We figured why not go to the proven factory and use Stellar himself. It took a lot of calls, and a fair amount of arm twisting to get the 30 straws we ended up with in the spring of 2021. We are sure glad we got it as we have 4 really good sons in the sale this year, 3 ripping good heifer calves in the replacement pen, and two summer calves including our heaviest heifer calf off of Steadfast’s mother. Look for Stellar to supply calving ease, moved onto a balanced TMR ration. Organic mineral are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health. Both operations use a total nutritional program ensuring optimal cattle performance. If you have any questions about the nutrition of the sale bulls, please feel free to call.
Best of luck on sale day!

RED TOWAW Selkirk 421J
AOD: 4
Selkirk 421J is a big bodied, masculine, stout muscled bull that does a lot of things really well. We used him on a group of cows last year after he semen tested and measured 39.5 cm at 12 months of age.
His dam is from the dominant cow family in our winter calving herd, the Moniques, and she also is the dam of our Red Roundup heifer calf at $10,000 last fall to Sterling Christman. She also is the dam of our best winter calving three year old cow and she in turn raised one of our top replacement heifers last year.
His sire came from the good Hamco herd from Glenboro, Manitoba and he was a dark red performance bull that still kept birth weights moderate. 421J is a ¾ brother to last year’s high selling Towaw Bull to Lust Farms Red Angus near Medicine Hat.
This guy has all the tangibles on paper that get you excited; moderate birth weight, top end weaning and yearling weights, strong EPDs with top 10% in scrotal, docility, carcass weight, heifer pregnancy and Milk. His pedigree is also linebred with both Kingman 16W and the donor cow Red Towaw Monique 29T on both sides of his pedigree. He is structurally correct, as loose hided as a Bloodhound Pup and moves like a Moose through three feet of snow.
The intangibles are what get us excited though, from his masculine, prepotent look, to his large, well formed and suspended testicles. If you want your next herdsire to look like a steer, or worse yet, a heifer, then this guy isn’t for you. The testosterone is flowing through him and he is all bull. Couple that with his linebred pedigree and I predict you won’t need to read the bottom of a tag to know which calves are his come fall.
Selkirk is the kind of bull that makes feminine daughters and masculine sons that should be homozygous for a lot of good traits and we would like to continue using him in our program.
Selling full possession and retaining a 1/2 semen interest.
TOWAW Perseus 601K
AOD: 2 HOMOZYGOUS BLACK H
Perseus is a thick made, easy fleshing, very deep bodied bull with extra performance. The cool thing is that he just has a 77 pound BW to go with it.
Reese showed him at the side of his dam all summer last year and did very well being named Champion Female at the Lac Ste Anne District Show, and the Barrhead Beef Bash Junior Show as well as Reserve Champion Angus Female at the Sask. Junior Angus Show. When shown on his own Perseus was Champion Bull Calf at Alberta Junior Angus, Bashaw All Breeds Show, Lloydminster Stockade Junior Show, and was Reserve at the Farmfair Junior Show and the Barrhead Beef Bash. He was also named Grand Champion Bull at the Darwell Fair.
His Dam and Granddam are both full of volume and are very easy fleshing. We went to using Argentine genetics to add depth of rib, volume and the ability to stay in shape on minimal inputs and this guy certainly shows that.
Selling full possession and retaining a 1/2 semen interest.
TOWAW Galactic 403K (ET)
AOD: 10 HOMOZYGOUS BLACK
The first of two Stellar by Primavera 7Z full embryo transplant brothers, Galactic is a very correct, moderate, good looking bull. He is very nice headed and has calving ease built in with his +10 CE and 69 pound BW. His dam is an extremely deep, easy fleshing Argentine Cow that has 4 daughters working in the herd and three really good heifers in the replacement pen sired by Stellar as well.
TOWAW Galactic 408K (ET)
AOD: 10 HOMOZYGOUS BLACK
Homo Black Graphite is the second Stellar x 7Z bull that carries a bit more frame and performance than his brother. He was born on a cold night, and has a bit smaller ears, but that is the only thing short about him. We chose Sitz Stellar 726D to add calving ease, maternal qualities and foot quality to our calf crop and the progeny have the look to bolster that decision. Ryder is showing a full sister as his 4H and Junior show heifer this year.

The Quarry 415K is very attractive, shaggy haired, good footed and has a bright future ahead of him. AOD: 11 BLACK HIDED/RED GENE CARRIER
540J is one of the youngest Summer bulls in the group but might be one of the best. He is attractive, smooth shouldered, with a good head, good foot, and a strong, level top. His dam is a Tiger daughter out of my favourite cow to walk the pastures of Lower Sangudo, Sybil 4H. Sybil 5X has had 5 natural born sons sell in the sale, including Jive 468E to Thistle Ridge Red Angus in 2019, and Storm 469H to Howe Red Angus last year. We continue to use both those bulls in our program.

TOWAW John Wayne 401J (ET)
RED U-2 RECKONING 149A
Sire RED SIX MILE JOHN WICK 882E RED
AOD: 5 BLACK HIDED/RED GENE CARRIER
John Wayne is a very correct made ET calf out of the really good show cow of Thomas’s, Duchess 412D. We sold a half interest in her to Six Mile Ranch for $16,000 in the fall of 2018. Reese’s very successful show heifer from last fall was a full sibling to both 401J and 402J. This scamp is moderate framed, big middled and easy fleshing. He saw some use as an injury replacement with a group of our cows last fall. He has a very strong balanced set of genomically enhanced EPDs and ranks in the 4th percentile for the new Combined Breed Index at 271.

Sire RED SIX MILE JOHN WICK 882E
AOD: 5 BLACK HIDED/RED GENE CARRIER
John Lennon is a full brother to the previous bull and presents a little different package. He is a bigger framed bull with a little more length and extension presented in a very attractive package. He also saw some use with a group of cows last fall.
Look for this guy to add some growth to his calves and keep every daughter because the maternal end of things is well taken care of.

This guy is a moderate framed bull that could cover a bunch of heifers. He is structurally correct with a good amount of muscle shape and depth of body. His dam came to Towaw as a heifer calf purchased in the Red Roundup sale by Reese from Travis and Becky Page. His mother was stifled when he was a calf, so he didn’t get the best start, but both of them are looking great now.

422J is a long bodied, smooth shouldered bull with eye appeal. He rates as a calving ease bull and is the first red animal that traces directly to the Argentine Donor Cow, Primavera 7Z, that plays such a big part in the Towaw 2023 Joint Venture offering.
Applying EPDs for all these traits into selection and breeding decisions can be challenging.
Therefore, the Canadian Angus Association has worked to develop and Economic Selection Index that includes the EPDs for all traits. Traits are weighted in the index based on their economic impact on the Canadian commercial operation.
Basically, indexes help producers use EPDs to balance traits. Balancing traits can be complex. Not all traits make an equal contribution to profitability, and some traits counteract each other (e.g. post-weaning growth and cow size/feed requirements).
Other traits are important to a certain threshold, then there is less benefit in going any further (e.g. calving ease) or even a direct cost (e.g. milk production).
A well-constructed index can help streamline the process of selecting cattle for breeding. It is not intended to replace individual trait EPDs (which will still be available) or to tell breeders how to breed. An index can help breeders focus on cattle that will tend to be more profitable under Canadian production systems and markets.
For the commercial producerwho likely purchases bulls and thinks about EPDs on only one day of the year-it is a useful overall guide that simplifies the complexity of multiple EPDs.
The Canadian Balanced Index will officially be launched later this year.
The index is expressed in terms of Canadian dollars and reflects the expected difference in profits between bulls’ progeny.
For example:
Bull A CBI = $250
Bull B CBI - $150 www.rainbowredangus.com www.facebook.com/RainbowRedAngus
On average, progeny from Bull A will be $100 more profitable in a Canadian commercial operation than the progeny from Bull B.
