The nature of the questioned mind is kindness, and it has absolutely no quarrel with itself. When something appears that is unlike its nature—a negative concept, any thought of defense or rejection or resistance— minds splits away from its enlightened self. When it understands it true nature, it becomes an unceasing flow of delight.

INTERVIEW A Conver sation With

RIKKA

Zimmerman

CLJ: How did you wake up to this particular industry? Was there something personal that set you on this road? RZ: I’m from a very normal family. If you said the word “energy” they would all make fun of you. When someone’s from Ojai they often have a huge spiritual background and spiritual upbringing. That wasn’t the case for me. Ever since I was a little kid I loved looking up at the stars and felt more at home on top of my roof than I did in my home with my family. I wondered about infinity, life, and what was possible.

6

w w w.myconsciouslifejour nal.com

I felt like I belong up here. That being said, I’ve always felt that more was possible than was being presented to me. When I was eleven years old my father passed away. He was the love of my life. When my dad died it set me on a path of feeling really broken, like I knew I should be able to love more and couldn’t. I just hurt inside, and I found myself with different boyfriends, not feeling love, not protecting myself, I’m pushing them away, I’m doing all of this stuff. And I felt inside that it was still from that hurt.

I began looking through books on personal development and found a few therapists and fired them because I felt like I knew more about my life than they did. Personal development really began to make sense to me. Oh, wait, I’m the creator. I can change things. I can help let things go. I can create new possibilities. I was hooked from the very beginning. OMG, everything’s getting so much better. This is so good. And it gave me a sense of being able to choose my own destiny. At that time I was doing music but I was in total self-judgment. I thought I wasn’t good enough. I thought I wasn’t deserving enough. I didn’t feel that anybody should listen to what I say or that I had any real value or self-worth. But I still wanted to do it. So even though I was crippled with judgment and worried about what everyone was going to think, I made myself do it because I just couldn’t not. I love this but I’m so scared of it. I’m scared of being judged, but I’m going to do it anyway. I got up on stage and said, “You know, the music is just a hobby, so please, nobody judge me, and if you could just listen then that would be great.” Then I’d play and afterwards I’d go around the room and say, “Do you like me, did you like me, was it good, was I okay?” I had so much self-judgment looking for love and acceptance and just feeling like I couldn’t seem to get out of this. But I kept going deeper and deeper into personal development as I began realizing, one, that I was stopping me, and two, that I could actually make a different choice and reprogram my mind and my consciousness and my beliefs and shift my vibration. I’ve been on that path ever since. I’ve been teaching full-time for ten years. I jumped in headfirst and have not looked back. I’ve been traveling the world and training hundreds of thousands of people to have their most magnificent life. Wherever they are we can help transform them out of that energetic space and into a whole new one.

CLJ: That is awesome. Do you feel that your singing is your teaching? Tell me about that relationship. RZ: In my teaching I began coming

through with spontaneous conscious songs and/or toning. Divinity began using me. I would feel energy beginning to open up. I would be with a group of hundreds of people and divinity would come forth with a possibility of hey, this is their next step and I’d begin asking them questions and getting people to choose and getting people on board with the greater, more expansive life and energy field that was being presented. There was a certain point at which their mind has been updated, their consciousness has been updated, they’re like a whole yes, they don’t have any more resistance. But the energy change still hasn’t taken place. I found just in letting go and opening up I can sing transformation into people’s bodies. Just by connecting to “upstairs” that energy comes through and begins shifting their energy. I can feel where their energy is and then this toning begins coming through and then after the toning I look around and they’re all glowing. And all the information that was no longer required is no longer here. CLJ: Wow! If I understand you correctly, you’re channeling and reading the room and allowing that to come through you to basically recalibrate the audience. RZ: Totally. The cool thing is that there’s science behind it. A GDV (Gas Discharge Visualization) machine gives you pictures of people’s chakras and if they’re off balance, how big the chakras are, and their auras and energy in their bodies. We had the toning tested by a GDV machine and it increases the energy in people’s chakras, it aligns their chakras, and it gets rid of old emotional content so it repairs and restores places in their auras where the energy is not flowing through.

CLJ: That is incredible. RZ: Isn’t that cool? Love is such a miracle. Source is incredible. You open up to it and magic happens. CLJ: Are you still doing this? Where are you doing what you’re describing? RZ: I have one hundred and fifty

coaches all over the world who are teaching these tools and processes and vibrational shifts. I can actually train people on how to connect to that kind of divinity and how to bring that divinity through in their own way. We help them unlock themselves to that potential and possibility and show them how to do that again and again. My new record, The Miracle, has about eighty different layers of toning underneath that you can’t hear. It’s the energy and consciousness and vibrational alignments happening underneath the music that’s healing people’s bodies and bringing them into more possibility. It can reach the

Just by connecting to “upstairs” that energy comes through and begins shifting their energy. masses because people don’t resist music for the most part. They’ll be listening to it on the radio and feel really great and they don’t necessarily have to be in a place to choose consciousness. They can just receive the vibrations. CLJ: That is a really big deal. We’re here at this particular time in the world’s existence in order to participate and facilitate that raising in consciousness and your platform could be huge with the music. So what would you say to our readers about your work and what’s happening in the world? RZ: We are at a point in human

consciousness where it’s time for the beings that are here to awaken. To allow themselves to step into the divine connection with Love, God, Source, Universe. To step forward boldly and fully and allow themselves to shine and to give everyone else permission to be that too. It’s exactly the time to completely end the paradigm of fear so it’s no longer part of anyone’s mindset or anybody’s energy field. That’s why everything is so up in everybody’s faces right now. The energy and the consciousness are asking everyone what they are going to stand for. Are you going to stand for love or are you going to stand for fear? Are you going to believe in separation or are you going to allow yourself to embrace oneness? You have all the reflections of what’s acting out in our culture and the behaviors, and it’s like everybody’s last straw. It’s amazing what choosing love will bring. One choice for love, and love takes twelve steps towards you. We’re being assisted greatly on this journey. In May 2015 I was diagnosed with stage four melanoma cancer, which was a huge shock. I see that I signed up for it before I came here to help transform consciousness, bring me even closer to God, love and an even greater level of compassion. I was faced with the possibility that my life might end; there’s no greater experience that will bring you

into a level of knowing of what you’re here to be and what you’re here to bring forth. I could see that I’m actually meant to transform stadiums of people and to bring them into so much love and so much God that they walk away and create massive transformation on the planet. And I hadn’t allowed myself to love that much. I hadn’t given myself permission to really open that way. When I was diagnosed and went through that process I thought, “You can’t take me. I haven’t done this, I know that I’m supposed to do this. You can’t. There’s more.” I made this deep divine promise to myself and to God and to love that if I got this second chance at life I would show up fully, I would love fully, I would go to the ends of the earth and beyond and just let divinity have its way with me for this music. We’ve got to realize what really matters. When you get to that place, the only reason why you want to live is because you want to love. Life and love became synonymous. The reason why you wake up every day is so that you can engage with all of love, open your heart and let that love in. We get to live with what really matters. It’s amazing. CLJ: It is amazing and so many people don’t quite get that. Did the music come after that or were you always singing and performing? RZ: I had an album that came out

a few years before I was diagnosed with cancer, but it was more about facilitating and transformation, so the songs were, “You outshine the sun, you’re amazing, you can live the greatest life.” The Miracle album is so deep in my heart, it was just written from God to God inside of me. Walking in the deepest places in my heart and letting it all come through. The other album was for other people. This new album is for God, for God in the soul. When you’ve gone through something like cancer, you see how many moments in your life you’ve spent not fully being yourself. People are robbing themselves of themselves and they don’t even know it. I’m going to honor my heart no matter what, I’m going to show up as me, I’m going to love fully. Making that transformation is so important. f

The Law of "All is Mind"

WISDOM THOUGHTS by Melba Black, PhD

“The All is Mind; The Universe is mental.” – The Kybalion

T

he Universal (Hermetic) Laws provide you with a framework to maneuver while you are living on this physical plane—“Earth School.” Rather than leave you an invitation in your mailbox, the Laws ask you to seek them out. Personal inquiry is required to find them. All you have to do is ask the right questions: Is there a formula for abundant living? How do I make sense of my life? What do I do when I hit a seemingly dead end or have my life turned upside down? These are only a few of the questions to get you started. I ask you to suspend your presuppositions about the first Hermetic law “All is Mind” and become a little child with wide-eyed wonderment. This law is applied based on your thoughts and feelings. Remember that laws are neither good nor bad but neutral. It is judgments and projections that make them either bad or good. So, when studying the Laws, ask if there is a false interpretation that you are reading into them. Ask if what you have been taught is contrary to the truth of “All is Mind; The Universe is mental.” Keep in mind that all truths are direct, simple, and clear. Your body hears everything you think and feel. It has been proven that the larger part of our physical challenges is a direct or indirect result of our thinking, including disease (Dis-Ease). The late Louise Hay spent her life’s work on teaching how our thoughts become our reality. Her book You Can Heal Your Life not only identifies negative thought patterns and how they affect the body, but also teaches how to shift and reprogram your thoughts for healing physical issues using positive affirmations. According to Ernest Holmes, “There is but one Mind and we use It. The laws are universal. Our use of them is individual and personal. Our thought is operated on by a universal creativity, which is infinite in its capacity to accomplish.” This leaves individual freedom within the law, and offers the opportunity to cooperate with the universal laws while being immersed in a benevolent world. Here is an exercise in awareness. Set a timer for one hour and then notice your thoughts. Be diligent in writing them down. It is fascinating what comes across your screen! As you write them, notice how your body reacts to the thoughts. When negative thoughts arise, see how you can reframe them into positive statements. The first Hermetic Law “All is Mind” allows for significant life changes through conscious awareness of what you are inwardly and outwardly telling yourself and the universe. By cooperating with this law and becoming a cocreator, you provide the channel for a positive outcome. f Melba M. Black, PhD, CLC is a writer, mentor, innovator, and scholar. She has over thirty years of experience in holistic health, spirituality, and energy healing, including Life Coaching, Reiki, Intuitive Development, Meditation, Yoga, Qigong, and more. YinYang

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR

How do men and women receive I n my work as an Art of Feminine Presence instructor, men and women frequently ask me how they can best support their significant other to create more fulfilling relationships. Sometimes they also ask how they can get more of the kind of support they want from their partner, when they’re not always clear what it is that they long for. If we don’t get the kind of support we need, our relationships don’t get fed. Especially in romantic partnerships, we need polarity for good attraction. If we don’t get the support we require, we aren’t as fulfilled as we could be. In general, the masculine essence tends to prefer being appreciated for what he does, while the feminine essence tends to prefer being appreciated for who she is.

" In general, the masculine essence tends to prefer being appreciated for what he does, while the feminine essence tends to prefer being appreciated for who she is." by Adele Wang How can you use this to improve your intimate relationship? If you’re a woman wanting to support your man, notice and compliment him on what he does for you. “Thanks for moving that heavy furniture from the basement up to the living room!” Or, “You were awesome the way you handled that tricky situation.” The masculine basks in the appreciation for his accomplishments. He craves being trusted by you. His contributions to the relationship are often in the form of doing things for you. He really appreciates when you notice them.

10

w w w.myconsciouslifejour nal.com

In contrast, if you’re a man wanting to support the woman in your life, notice and express your appreciation of the essence of who she is, rather than what she does. For example, you could tell her how much you adore her quirky sense of humor. Or how you love the way she lights up a room with her natural warmth. Compliments like these fulfill a woman more than they would a man. They are more meaningful to her than compliments about a specific task, such as, “Thanks for handling that billing problem.” Women yearn to be seen without having to do anything for it. That is why a woman loves to hear, “You are so beautiful.” She craves being appreciated for what you notice about her. Knowing these differences can help you give the support your partner needs. It can also help you to ask for the kind of support you need. Don’t assume that your partner wants the same kind of support you do. Appreciate that men and women are different, and that can be a marvelous thing. f Adele Wang helps smart, spiritual, perfectionist women clear stress so they can create more personal and professional success. As a mentor, energy healer, and Art of Feminine Presence instructor, she helps women reduce overwhelm and increase their magnetic presence so they can attract who and what they want into their lives. www. safehavenhealing.net

INNER FEMININE AND MASCULINE

support differently? M en wonder from boyhood, “Where do I fit in?” They look to their friends to confirm they have a place in male society. As girls mature, they know when they have reached womanhood; they have a biological rite of passage. Teenage boys do not. In our society men are taught that displays of emotion equal weakness. This is why men often discuss sports, jobs, or hobbies. Family issues, failing marriages, children on drugs, or their personal lack of sexual interest are all taboo subjects that few will discuss even with their closest friends or doctors. Men fear they will not “fit in,” aren’t accomplished enough, and won’t be accepted. So they joke and posture and maybe find a few friends, pat each other on the back, find some activities they can do together, and avoid disclosing who they are, what they fear, and the mistakes they have made. They question who they are and who they can be. They define themselves by their mistakes. Without honest feedback and support, some will turn to alcohol or drugs. Both men and women in relationships want to be heard. And women are generally better listeners. In a committed relationship, men too must learn to listen. Their desire to “fix” problems needs to give way to allowing their partners to express themselves. Learning to say “tell me more” and “what do you think?” lets their partner work through the issue themselves. If he can be her sounding board then he is really supporting her and this will create greater intimacy between them. This works in reverse also, but most women already know this.

" As men are willing to experience intimacy with other men, they bond, and lifelong friendships emerge." by Jack D. Brown

Today there are a growing number of men’s organizations whose mission is to mentor men, to confirm they have a safe and confidential place to express themselves and a place to celebrate their manhood. These organizations support and demonstrate the removing of the male mask and allow for displays of emotion without being construed as weak. They remind men to listen and be good followers as well as good leaders in their committed relationships. Men find that they can speak of their pain, fears, and failures and not be thought of as “less than.” They are reminded of their commitments to themselves, their families, and their community and that what they bring is valuable and enough. As men are willing to experience intimacy with other men, they bond, and lifelong friendships emerge. And their life partners reap the benefit of stronger yet more available men. f Jack D. Brown is an active participant in the Men’s Movement and celebrates the differences between men and women. He mentors men to live with excellence and as mature men, create successful families, careers, and communities. He is married and the father of four daughters. He lives in Roswell, Georgia.

10Ways that Conscious People Act

by Frank M. Wanderer, PhD

S

piritual awakening means the ability to clearly see that "what I perceive, experience, think, or feel is not the same as what I am. As soon as a person recognizes who he or she is not, immediately comes the recognition of who he or she actually is: "The light of consciousness, in which perceptions, experiences, thoughts, and emotions come and go. This is the deeper, real self. The conscious alertness thus created brings about a sense of tranquility and internal peace. The sustained conscious attention launches the spiritual process of transubstantiation that leads the individual to new perspectives and new ways of observing. This process, by transforming the consciousness of the person, changes the entire personality of the individual.

Here are ten ways that conscious people act:

Conscious people do not only depend on their life experiences. They depend much more on their ability to divert their attention from the outside world to the internal world. They are able to turn away from the patterns of mind, programmed by their egos. he unconscious life is often a rush to chase desires T and unfulfilled dreams. However, conscious people understand the constant variability of the world of shapes and forms, where nothing is lasting and everything is dialectical, changeable. Because they realize the transitory nature of things, they are able to abandon their desires and ambitions. onscious people wake from the hypnotic spell of their C personal history. They no longer believe in what they have firmly regarded as their own personal history. Their experiences lead them to the point of questioning the truth of what they believed to be true in connection with themselves. eing in the captivity of the Mind means that we are B either prisoners of our past or we live under the spell of an imaginary future. Happiness and pleasure only exist in the actual moment of the present. Conscious people virtually step out of the psychological time frame. They stop mulling over injuries of the past, and do not build their identity for the future. U nawakened people identify with the voice of the Ego, the narrator of their own story, so closely that their personal history keeps them under its spell. When conscious people wake up from the sleep of personal identity, they recognize that they are the free space of Consciousness. They are not the shapes and forms appearing in this space, but the space itself, where a new dimension of existence opens up for them. Conscious people are able to recognize the dual nature of existence, the fact that if we fail to experience one side— happiness—we will not be able to learn about the other— unhappiness. Their inner freedom enables them to say "yes" with pleasure to the things that are happening to them. Conscious people no longer identify with their expectations of other people. At present, the program of their internal expectations has already been dissolved. Suffering is ours because we identify with the suffering. Conscious people are aware that their sufferings are, in fact, their helpers. Suffering in that sense is the wake-up call that prevents Consciousness from finally sinking into the dream of separateness. Conscious people readily accept anything and everything the moment brings to them, whether it be joy or sorrow, because they will be fully aware that all these are parts of the same journey. onscious people understand that only the Here and Now C exist. Everything created by others is transitory, but what they create for themselves will be lasting and permanent.

Lights, Camera, Action! by Laina Or lando

Do you realize that you are a Star? Seriously, you are always acting!

E

ach of us is playing the role of “ourselves,” in the best movie ever: Life. The only difference between us is whether we are conscious of our acting, or not. Those who are consciously acting are aware of the subconscious mind, and therefore act appropriately in every circumstance. Those not conscious of the subconscious mind are often re-acting inappropriately. The average person who believes that re-acting to life is normal, is conscious less than five percent of the time. One who is conscious is fully present to what is unfolding in each moment, aware of themselves and others with curiosity and an open mind. They trust that everything is an aspect of the grander consciousness we call The Universe, therefore, they seldom re-act to life’s circumstances. These people, who act consciously one hundred percent of the time, we call Enlightened Masters. Think of the sub-conscious mind as a giant movie reel that started recording at conception. All the fearbased experiences you have by the age of ten, when the reel reaches full capacity, get recorded and form the belief structure that generates your sub-conscious mind. This is the thinking that takes place below your conscious awareness. These recordings form the script of all of your re-active performances. When you simply act as your True Self, you are conscious and your experience of life is quite enjoyable. When, on the other hand, you encounter life’s uncomfortable experiences with a boss, a president, a lover, friend, parent, even your child, and it triggers a fear within you, you immediately re-act to the situation exactly as you did before the age of ten. This happens because you learned how to deal with fear when you were young and immature. The best you could do then was to hold your breath, press record, and save the experience. When you matured enough to consciously re-play the scene, you could then respond to the fear appropriately. This conscious re-acting allows you to heal and delete your childhood fears. Every time you re-act in life—until you become conscious, you are re-en-acting your childhood fears— embrace it as an opportunity to respond to the current situation as a mature adult. This way you increase your ability to consciously direct your life’s movie in a new and fun way. Sure, some people like re-runs, but the best movies are the ones where the acting is fresh, fun, and innovative. A Conversation with the Brothers and Sister from Magnolia Grove Monastery Sister D

Brother Allen

CLJ: Why did you want to become a monk or nun? Brother Allen: When I was entering the monastery, a lot of people said that people become monks because they are suffering. But that wasn’t the case for me. I became a monk at sixteen because I was inspired to be happy and I wanted to surround myself with happy people and that was a motivating factor. I came to retreats with the monks and nuns as a kid. I was so impacted with the simple things, like a smile; something so simple, but it was so deep. I knew that if those around me were happy, then I’d be happy. I felt the practice of mindfulness was important to find peace and joy in my daily life.

CLJ: Has that proven to be a good practice for you?

Brother Radiance

Brother Allen: Yes, it really gives me a lot of energy throughout the day. When I wake up in the morning, I know that being alive is happiness itself. Seeing my brothers and sisters in the morning and sharing a practice with them and living the day a moment at a time, makes me feel blessed.

CLJ: Do you foresee that you’ll continue on this path? Brother Allen: I’ve committed my whole life. But I take it a moment at a time because if I look too far into the future, I might get stuck there. If I take care of now then that will take care of whatever is coming. Sister D: I came to the practice from a different angle than Brother Allen. I was born during the Vietnam War and there were a lot of repercussions, a lot of suffering in my life and in my childhood. When I met our teacher I was in residency being trained as a medical doctor. I realized there was a path that would help me to transform my suffering, but I continued with my medical training. Suddenly, my partner passed away. He was swimming and got pulled out to sea. That really woke me up. I saw that life was impermanent. My partner lived a beautiful life. He was in his early thirties but I didn’t feel regret for him. I wondered if I were to die would I have peace in my heart. The answer was a definitive no. That helped me to let go of everything and to acknowledge that I want peace. I realized I couldn’t go on like I was. I left medicine and went to see a teacher at a community in France. I’ve been a nun for seventeen years now and I have not one day regretted that I became a nun. This path of practice helps me to generate peace in my daily life. I was impressed with the name of your magazine Conscious Life, because our teacher says that we are the Homo sapiens, the wise ones. When we have a spiritual life, we can be the Homo conscious, the awake ones. We don’t use our awareness. But if we can practice bringing awareness to our bodies then that helps us to be aware of what’s going on. It just takes one breath or one mindful step to become aware that we are still breathing. I give rise to gratitude and gladness that I still have this life. So a conscious life is possible with the practice of mindfulness.

CLJ: Are we collectively more aware than we were twenty years ago? Sister D: We need the collective awakening to see that we are in such a state of violence, discrimination, separatism, and individualism. People come to our practice centers more and more nowadays because of the political environment. We are in mud right now. But we say that in mud there will be a lotus.

The Brothers and Sisters of Magnolia Grove Monastery recently visited the Unity North Church in Atlanta and had great fun at our local Gibbs Garden.

Brother Radiance: We notice that people are working in the direction of healthy choices, such as vegan and organic food. That’s something we’ve dreamed of; so we do have that collective consciousness. People know what is right and what is wrong. Sometimes it takes hundreds of years to make it possible. But we are heading there slowly.

CLJ: What would you say to our readers who are in the midst of their daily lives doing the best they can? Sister D: We practice mindfulness. It is a starting point and the first factor on the noble path. When you look at the Chinese character for mindfulness, it means “now mind.” In our daily life here, we learn to live that “now mind.” Some people think meditation is an obstacle, but meditation is to see things as they are, in this moment. And if you look at meditation that

way, then mindfulness is meditation. If you can anchor the mind in the breath, then you won’t get lost. You can choose to let go of those thoughts, or just smile at them so your body doesn’t go through stress throughout the day. Those are the moments that we return to ourselves and we are in oneness in body and mind. When we listen to any kind of bell we stop to breathe three times. In breath and out breath, that’s one time. That is mindful breathing that you can practice—in a hospital, in the car, as you walk into your house. We train ourselves to be with what is in the moment. f Magnolia Grove Monastery in Batesville, MS is the realization of a dream held by a compassionate community intent on establishing a center for mindfulness in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Transcending Consciousness by Jay Fenello

W

henever you want to get to a destination, it is often helpful to have a map that can lead the way. Especially if you’ve never been there before. While numerous maps of consciousness exist, what I find interesting is that they all share a common description of their highest state. Whether you call it Nirvana, connecting with Source, or being one with the Holy Spirit, the experience of it is the same. All of the major world religions align on this point, especially within their mystical traditions. While it’s more openly embraced within the eastern traditions, it also exists within Judaism (the Kabbalah), within Islam (Sufism), and within the Christian traditions (Contemplative Prayer). These transcendent experiences are unusual, profound, and life-changing. Many people never have this experience. Those that do often find their lives change drastically after the event. While the experience of transcendence is the same, the way each of these religions introduces people to the

16

w w w.myconsciouslifejour nal.com

state varies quite dramatically. Unfortunately, there are no techniques you can follow that will guarantee you a transcendent experience. There are, however, some that consistently help. One common technique is to quiet your mind to the point of silence—a very difficult thing to do. Those that are successful, however, are only prepared for transcendence, not guaranteed access to it.

Floating as a Vehicle One of the easiest ways to quiet your mind is to completely eliminate distractions. And floating in a sensory depravation tank is one of the easiest ways to eliminate distractions. When you enter one of these tanks, you enter a world that is completely pitch black, utterly silent, with no tastes and no smells. And because the water

is Epsom salt rich and heated to the same temperature as your body, you float in an environment where you don’t even feel sensations on your skin. When people float, they quickly enter an altered state of consciousness—a state where higher levels of consciousness become more accessible. Once attained, people can use this state to improve mindfulness, or to remain passive in their pursuit of transcendence.

Frequent Flyers Just like any other traveler, the more often you visit an exotic location, the easier it is for you to find your way there. And that’s a good thing, because floating is both expensive and inconvenient. Luckily, there are other approaches to transcending consciousness. Most are based on repetitive activities designed to distract the mind or focused activities designed to quiet the mind. Examples include:

• • • • •

meditation dancing, spinning, rocking prayer (chanting, contemplative) light and sound machines, ganzfelds gazing into mirrors, candles, obsidian

To summarize, your journey to transcendence begins with quieting the mind toward a receptive brain state. One of the easiest ways to achieve this state is through floating. Once you reach this destination, revisit it often using the most convenient technique that works for you. Frequent travelers benefit from increasing mindfulness and, if lucky, a transcendent experience or two over the course of a lifetime. Happy travels, and best wishes on your journey. f Jay Fenello is the creator of the MindVizor, a ganzfeld meditation aid that provides benefits similar to floating, without the mess or expense. " Children love to visualize putting wishes into . . . bubbles."

Meditation

M

KIDS

editation is a difficult concept to teach children. Even an adult embarking on the practice of meditation might find it challenging to achieve a complete state of “no thought.” Being able to relax your mind and body is a precursor to meditation. With much discipline the novice will develop the muscles needed to reach the next stage of meditation. A child cannot and should not be forced to learn to meditate. The pursuit to learn to meditate is a very personal decision coupled by a strong commitment and desire to do so. So how do children and meditation go together? Children can be exposed to meditation and, most importantly, its prerequisites. Basic techniques of diaphragmatic breathing, muscle relaxation, affirmations or mantras, and visualizing are some of the methods used to prepare oneself for meditation. Most people first learn to replace chaotic thinking patterns with a calming visual or mantra designed to soothe the mind and body. A more playful, interactive method is a preferred approach. Parents can use relaxation techniques throughout their day. Children see, children do. Blowing bubbles is a stress reducing fun activity enjoyed by all ages. Children love to visualize putting wishes into the bubbles. Meditation can be done with your child sitting next to you or even on your lap. You can even invite a stuffed animal or doll to participate. This is an opportune time to focus on both breathing and visualizing. Using diaphragmatic breathing in this setting is the perfect moment to explore the difference in shallow vs. deep breathing. Let your child know why you are going to meditate. Use words like, “Mommy feels a little stressed so I am going to do my deep breathing. Do you want to breathe with me?” Introducing children to these tools will give them an advantage if and when they want to meditate. It is never too soon for a child to reap the benefits and techniques of relaxation and meditation. There are reports that state that stress levels during pregnancy can affect an

unborn child. I used deep breathing throughout my last pregnancy and I believe that my newborn was easier to soothe when I focused on my breathing because of this. In general, the age of four is when a child can start to participate in relaxation exercises, but I have seen children as young as eighteen months copy breathing and positive statements. Little exposures can begin at any age. It can take a lifetime for meditators to be able to clear their minds of all thought with the purpose of transcending the mind. It is extremely impractical to impose these expectations on a child. The focus can instead be on helping children to integrate practical tools like visualizing, breathing, and positive statements into their lives. Storytelling is an ageold method of passing along lessons. I created stories that incorporated research-based stress management techniques for my own children to learn to self-soothe. To implement these tools, show your children how you use relaxation throughout your day. Take deep breaths when you are driving or rushing to get out the door. Try a candlelight dinner or breakfast. See who can hold their gaze on the flame for thirty seconds. Introduce your family to relaxation music or classical music. Create emotional awareness by asking your child how the different styles of music feel. Explain to your children that you are calming yourself down or use positive statements when you are feeling frustrated. With a little practice, relaxation techniques will become second nature to you and your children. When your children decide it is time to graduate to meditation, they will have already taken their core classes. f

• Our protocols are proprietary and combine the best of Chiropractic care, nutritional testing, and, the hallmark of Healworks, active listening to your situation.

• To eliminate your pain or

dysfunction, the cause must be identified and healed. This is best done by a Doctor who is listening to you with full attention, understanding, and compassion.

• How can one heal a person if one

has not tried to know their problem and know them?

• While Healworks specializes in

treating pain, especially spinal and joint pain, the path to healing is also the path to Wellness. The ultimate goal of our care is establishing and supporting your health.

• Unlike most Chiropractic offices we do not routinely x-ray our patients. Also we do not accept any form of insurance. We have found that offering health care at reasonable prices is impossible if an insurance company is involved.

• However, utilizing our multi- faceted approach we resolve the problem in five office visits, or less. Our statistics indicate that 95% of our patients describe themselves fully recovered in fewer than five visits.

• Healworks incorporates body/mind strategies including nutrition, herbs, and homeopathic support.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE? We offer Chiropractic care, Applied Kinesiology, Nutritional testing, and Consultation. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? We have been at our present location since 1992, 24 years. Dr. Gunter has been in active practice since 1983, 33 years. WHAT SETS YOUR BUSINESS APART? We are an alternative General Practice specializing in pain and wellness. If our evaluation does not indicate that the patient is best served by our therapies, we consider it a duty to help them find the proper referral. After 24 years, we have connections to many in the healing arts. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR BUSINESS? The documented inability of modern Medicine to keep people healthy and the desperate need of the suffering to find relief offers us the opportunity to fill that need and contribute to the well-being of us all. magine how our world could shift if we all lived and spoke to each other from a place of compassion, kindness, abundance, joy, empowerment, and purpose. Higher Brain Living™ is more than a personal growth and development modality. It is a pathway to the awakening of humanity.

The powerful twenty-two-step process uses light touch to move energy and oxygen to the nearly untapped prefrontal cortex of the brain. This is the part of the brain where enlightenment exists; it registers almost no energy without this process. This energy and the breath that follows travel in a wave-like pattern called salutogenesis, meaning “the beginning of well-being.” This movement releases lifelong stress while activating the prefrontal cortex, increasing energy and strengthening the neural pathways to the Higher Brain. Consistent repetition and intentional practice allow the brain to sustain this awakened state, resulting in more 20

clarity, insights, better sleep, less drama, less fear and overreaction, and more joy and peace. Deep transformation occurs as actions are taken toward stated goals. After an awakening experience, Dr. Michael Cotton, the founder of Higher Brain Living, carefully crafted this technique from his training as a chiropractor. He also consulted with colleagues in the healing arts including acupuncture, polarity therapy, yoga, and qi gong, to name a few. He knew that in order for his contribution to make a lasting impact in people’s lives and in the world, he had to include all four dimensions of the human experience—Mind, Body, Relationships, and Environment. The roots of this process are inspired by Ken Wilber’s philosophy regarding Spiral Dynamics, which identifies cultural shifts in social consciousness as people evolve to higher levels of awareness. This philosophy encourages society to transcend the shadows, but include what has been learned that serves the greater good. Without activity in the Higher Brain, the unconscious shadow prevails, keeping us separate, and operating from lower brain fear and survival-based thinking. The lower brain sabotages every change we try to make because its mantra is “sameness = safety.” That lower brain sees everything as a threat, creating chronic stress and fear. Change might not be safe; we might not survive. No matter the quality of our lives, if we get through another day alive, this primitive part of the brain calls it a success. We stay in unfulfilling jobs and joyless relationships because changing doesn’t feel safe. The lower brain is powerful and always on high alert. So if you haven’t been able to achieve your goals, it’s not your fault that your sincerity, motivation, and willpower haven’t done the job. The brain physiology needed to create

hroughout history the search for our Divine nature has included the use of our senses, especially that of sound. Shamans have long held the belief that the Divine, Great Spirit/God exists in everything on earth and beyond. They would invoke the Spirit of the wolf by howling from deep within their bodies as the driving beat of the drum was the passageway into other worlds. Stories of Divine interactions were created and retold around the community fire. As humans progressed, so too did the ceremonies and the way stories were told. The Auscultare was the teacher who listened to the young monks and instructed them how to perform before they were allowed to read publicly. It was important the prayers were said in a graceful tone and accent in order to sound heavenly to those who received the prayer. Whole cathedrals were built with meticulous construction to get just the right acoustics when the priest and other monastics chanted the sacred prayers and text. In our modern lives, we’ve discovered that sound has a way of affecting the body and soul in ways not known before. The metal singing bowl, known as the Tibetan or Himalayan bowl, brings a feeling of the ancientness within, like the awakening of a past life as a monk living deep within the walls of a monastery. ave you ever noticed how music affects your mood? Chances are that you use music to either get you psyched up before going into a situation when you need some extra energy or to calm your nerves and your mind. There is now supporting evidence that using music for self-enhancement, stress management, depression, anxiety, and even raising your IQ does work! PSYCHOACOUSTICS, SUBTLE ENERGY, and Healing Music

P

sychoacoustics involves physical, psychological, and emotional responses to sound and music. To gain a fuller appreciation of the healing powers of sound we must, I believe, consider the ways that sonic stimuli work with our innate intelligence toward balance, coherence, and self-healing. We know that every atom, molecule, cell, organ, and chakra has a characteristic frequency at which it vibrates. As such, each resonates to incoming frequencies as well as radiates those same frequencies out to the planet. Leading researchers now understand that our bodies are self-healing organisms, if we give them a chance. Using sound and music can provide the “sound nutrition” and vibrational building blocks to support the innate intelligence of our body to keep us healthy. Recently, in Super Genes, Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Rudolph Tanzi documented that we can actually communicate with our cells, genes, and DNA to instruct them to express higher levels of optimal well-being. This opens up new horizons of self-healing as we participate in our own healing journey.

STRESS AND MUSIC Hidden stress factors inherent in most music add to an individual’s overall stress level, without the person’s awareness, which can amplify or undermine the benefits of the music itself. Most music unconsciously hooks us into following the melodic and harmonic patterns. One’s attention is focused on where the music is going in the future. This “paralysis of analysis” creates stress in the present moment for the listener. In addition, the emotional state of the composer or performer affects the way the listener experiences the music. It’s not just the notes, it’s the energy that comes through the music. If the composer/ performer is feeling stressed, or coming more from ego than from love and being in service to the healing needs of the listener, those vibes are encoded into the music. We are also entrained by the musician’s brainwaves, as well as beneficial sonic entrainment tones.

RELAXATION, HEALING, AND MINDFULNESS Relaxation takes place in the present moment. Likewise, the essence of mindfulness is to become mindfully aware

by Steven Halpern

of the present moment. Dr. Herbert Benson’s research into the “relaxation response” documented that stress is a contributory or aggravating factor in at least 80 percent of diseases. Therefore, reducing stress should be a valuable and viable goal for a musician/healer/practitioner. With less stress, the body’s innate intelligence, biological, and energetic systems can work together. Research by quantum physicists like Dr. William Tiller has demonstrated that intention can be measured. Even without scientific apparatus, we can sensitize ourselves to the subtle effects of a musical selection by observing how it affects our breath, our heartbeat, and our awareness of the present moment. As we tune in to the implications of the multi-dimensional music and audible tones, we are reminded that the most ancient uses of music were ceremonial, to promote inner peace and strengthen our connection with the Divine. Appreciating

the many subtle levels at which music affects us opens the doorway to more effective modalities to help manifest higher levels of health, healing, and wellness. f Steven Halpern is a Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum-selling recording artist, composer, and researcher who has touched the lives of millions. Experiencing a Garden Seasonal Hor ticultural Therapy by Leigh Anne Starling

D

uring the winter months, when inclement weather keeps many of us indoors, it is especially beneficial to stay connected to the more verdant seasons and their associated activities, while respecting the natural cycle of nature’s more restful state. Gardening is one life-affirming activity that can provide us with physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual gifts as we await springtime. If the climate where you live is conducive to outdoor activity during the winter months, many vegetables can be planted in early fall and supply you with a harvest until spring. Spinach, kale, mustard, and lettuce are excellent options. Root vegetables such as radishes, beets, and carrots will store well in the cold ground until ready for harvest. Winter gardening also extends to the plants around you. While flowers, trees, and shrubs are

in their dormant stage, mulching and refreshing soil with organic compost will benefit the health of the plant material and prepare it for spring. If indoor gardening is your only opportunity, today’s technology—especially LED lighting and hydroponic systems—make it possible to grow herbs and vegetables indoors. Tending a garden, however small, growing vegetables from seed to harvest, is a way to stay attuned to the cycle of life. The benefits of working with plants have been researched by scholars and practitioners, most notably a community of therapists practicing horticultural therapy. Horticultural therapists recognize the act of planting, nurturing, and cultivating plants provides many proven benefits, continued on next page

RAW FOOD by Brenda Cobb

Brain Food F

oods rich in antioxidants, good fats, vitamins, and minerals provide energy for the brain and help protect against brain diseases. Some foods are superpower heroes when it comes to supporting your brain. These vegan foods are especially powerful and so delicious. Avocados contain vitamin K, which helps prevent blood clots in the brain and improves memory and concentration. They are great sources of potassium and vitamins C and B6, which help promote cognitive health. The natural nitrates in beets boost blood flow to the brain, which helps mental performance. Blueberries are high in gallic acid and protect the brain from degeneration and stress. Broccoli’s high levels of choline help keep your memory sharp as a tack. Raw coconut oil works as a natural antiinflammatory and can help with memory loss as you age. It is rich in medium-chain triglycerides, which break down into ketones and can be used by the brain cells for fuel. Spinach is loaded with vitamins A and K, which not only fight inflammation but also are powerful in helping keep dementia and mental deterioration at bay. Rosemary is loaded with carnosic acid, which helps protect the brain from neurodegeneration. It does this by shielding the brain against chemical free radicals, which are linked to Alzheimer’s, strokes, and normal aging. Turmeric boosts antioxidant levels and helps improve the brain’s oxygen intake. This keeps you alert and better able to process information. Walnuts improve cognitive health and their high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals help improve mental alertness. The vitamin E in walnuts helps ward off Alzheimer’s. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of zinc, which enhances memory and thinking skills. Chia seeds are a supercharged brain food with some of the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids of any food. Omega-3 fats build brain cell membranes, reduce brain inflammation, and promote new brain cell formation. This can help improve your mood and memory and give 28

extra protection against depression and dementia. Combine all of these foods into one delicious recipe and you get a powerhouse of brain support and deliciousness.

Brain Power Salad 1/4 cup walnuts 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup chopped broccoli 1/2 cup grated beets 4 cups spinach 1/2 avocado, sliced Soak the walnuts and pumpkin seeds in 4 cups of alkaline water overnight to release enzyme inhibitors and make the nuts and seeds easier to digest. Drain and pat dry. Combine the broccoli, beets, spinach, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds. Toss with the dressing. Top with avocado slices and feast on your delicious brain food.

Brain Power Dressing 3 tablespoons coconut oil 2 tablespoons lime or lemon juice 2 tablespoons alkaline water 1/2 teaspoon rosemary 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1 cup blueberries Pinch Himalayan salt Pinch cayenne pepper Combine all dressing ingredients in the blender and blend into a creamy dressing. Toss the salad ingredients with the dressing. Save any left over for the next day. f Brenda Cobb is the founder of Living Foods Institute, author of The Living Foods Lifestyle®, and featured on documentaries “Healing Cancer Inside Out” and “Eating.” She has an Honorary Cultural Doctorate in Therapeutic Philosophy and the Phoenix Award honoring her work. Experiencing a Garden Continued among them increased physical activity, increased mental acuity, emotional health and wellness, and enhanced social interaction. The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) defines horticultural therapy as “an active process which occurs in the context of an established treatment plan where the process itself is considered the therapeutic activity rather than the end product.” Horticultural therapists are professionally registered through AHTA, the membership organization representing the profession of horticultural therapy. Horticultural therapists work with individuals from diverse backgrounds with differing abilities using living plants as a catalyst for healing. Horticultural therapy is practiced in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor settings including hospitals, schools, botanic gardens, and senior centers. Patients in a rehabilitation hospital recovering from an accident or illness build strength and endurance when planting or pruning in the garden. Older adults living in an assisted living program engage socially and benefit from sensory stimulation that brings about reminiscence. Someone coping with mental illness develops selfesteem and self-confidence by taking care of plants, nurturing, and observing the plants grow as a result of their care. The relationship between people and plants also offers opportunities for spiritual growth, as the individual recognizes the inherent consciousness of the plant world.

No matter the season and no matter the ability, gardening is therapeutic in all its forms. The connection to nature, the soil, and the sun can enrich our lives with mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional blessings, if we only give it a chance. f

REDUCE holiday

FENG

stress with

FengShui

SHUI by Marjorie Hilliard

F

rom Halloween through New Year’s Eve we experience multiple holiday celebrations. And with each holiday we add just a little more stress to our daily lives. Decorations, presents, parties, and deadlines, although fun, can also bring a bit of tension. The application of just a few Feng Shui steps can help balance the extra energy, making the holidays more enjoyable. The most prominent color used for the end of year holidays is red. In Feng Shui, red is considered a Fire Element which represents passion and excitement. This is one of the reasons it is associated with Fortunate Blessings and Prosperity. The right balance of fire adds excitement whereas too much fire can cause chaos and potentially loss. Here are a few Feng Shui tips to help you navigate through the holidays without adding too much excitement and confusion: 1. Consider wrapping presents with more blues (water) and yellows (earth). 2. Since we tend to wear more red during the holidays you may want to wrap yourself in a cozy dark brown blanket or robe at the end of your day. Brown is an Earth Element which helps you feel safe and grounded, and settles the excitement of the holidays. 3. Adding Water and Metal Elements to your decorations can help balance out the Fire Element. You can do this by integrating dark blues, golds, and silver. In Feng Shui, Water helps balance Fire, just like water extinguishes a flame. Adding Metal keeps Fire busy (since fire tries to melt metal), thereby reducing its impact. At this time of year, it is common to experience extra traffic, delays, short tempers, frustration, noise pollution, and anxiety, to name just a few of the inherent challenges. To make your holidays more enjoyable you may want to consider meditation if you haven’t already established a practice of doing so. And if you already have a meditation routine you may find it helpful to increase your daily introspection to shorter more frequent periods. Deep breathing, clearing your mind by observing a flower, closing your eyes and visualizing your favorite tranquil place, or listening to calming music are Feng Shui’s pointers toward a less stressful and more festive year-end. f

The Bagua is a tool used in Feng Shui to analyze the energy of a space. It consists of nine squares that represent different areas of your life.

The Winter Solstice and Loving Responsibility by Michelle Gregg

A

s we reach the Winter Solstice, when the Sun moves into Capricorn, we see the trees with their stark, naked limbs as reminders that we are in a natural time of retreat from the fullness of life. A time of deep reflection. At this shortest day and longest night of the year, the dark offers us solace and the space to replenish. Since the Autumn Equinox and its moment of balance, the Sun has diminished in power and strength, moving continuously southward in the sky, until this day, December 21, when we become lovers of the darkness and welcome her opportunity to introspect on the year’s passing—all that we have fulfilled and all we have yet to accomplish. The Winter Solstice, the “one step back” in the “two steps forward, one step back” cycle of life, brings us the opportunity to withdraw, rest, and restore ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Imagine hibernating animals in their dens. This is the image we can hold to help us find comfort and to understand this time of harsh, bleak weather in the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun actually appears to stop once it reaches its southernmost point. He pauses in place for three days around the Solstice, which means “the sun stands still.” This is the space in which we can stop and explore our inner workings, contemplate how we will rise to the coming year as the sun begins to rise again after the third day. While the Winter Solstice is physically a time of darkness, what we celebrate is the return of the light—the Sun. Ancient humans saw the annual decline of the Sun as 30

a time of hardship, when they were tested in their ability to survive until Spring. But just after the Winter Solstice, even though the weather was still bitter, the Sun began again to rise northward in the sky, gaining in strength each day. They rejoiced in this, knowing that the days of cold, darkness, and little food would pass with the rising of the light, and their survival would become easier. This hopeful message makes our hearts lighter as we give gifts to our loved ones and celebrate with family gatherings. With candles, fires, and twinkling lights we symbolically welcome and call the light back to feed, nurture, and heal us. We have faith our fears will subside with the coming of the Sun, and we evoke life by bringing in evergreens to inspire us in our own continuity. The message of this particular Winter Solstice is one of loving responsibility. Pause for a moment and lean into the phrase “loving responsibility.” The horoscope for 11:29 a.m. Eastern on December 21, 2017 shows a strong Saturn influence. The Sun has just entered Capricorn, and Saturn himself conjoins the Sun and Venus at this moment. The influence of Saturn is one of commitment, duty, and practical management. He asks us to work hard toward our dreams and to put strong structures in place that will stand the test of time. Venus shows us the beauty of harmony, fairness, and the blessing of our loved ones. As these two energies combine with the Sun, the message is one of holding our loved ones close and doing our best by them so that we strengthen

It’s natural to consistently focus on their negative behavior but it’s not helpful to your desired outcome. Your pets actually read your mind! They are highly intuitive beings who can literally see your thoughts. The more you think about your animals’ negative behavior, the more likely it is that they’ll continue the behavior. You replay their undesired behavior over and over again in your thoughts—how it annoys you, how you can get them to stop, fearing they are doing it while you’re gone—and in turn you are angry or upset with them about it. It becomes a broken record. The more you focus on it, the worse it seems. When your pets see the thoughts in your mind, they don’t see the red circle with the line through it in front of the negative behavior. They see and feel your thoughts on a particular behavior that for some reason brings a negative reaction from you, which is confusing to them. The energy is locked in a cycle making you both crazy. Punishing them teaches them to fear you and ultimately makes them more anxious, which can contribute to even more negative behaviors. Utilizing the Conscious Relationship as the Catalyst for

AWAKENING by Kate Rose

W

C O N S C I O U S

P E R S P E C T I V E S

ithin each of us is a soul that is aching to come forth and live with divine purpose in this life. Relationships are the tool by which we learn about ourselves, limits, egos, and even wounding or triggers that hold us back from becoming our best possible selves. Yet in order to become those people, we first need our minds to awaken to our individual authenticity. To awaken means to become aware of a new reality that results from an internal and spiritual shift in consciousness. We physically may be the same, yet how our minds operate changes completely. We go from living within the Third Dimension plane of the physical, to accelerating and then operating from the Fifth Dimension—a whole new level of reality in which a consciousness of love, compassion, peace, and spiritual wisdom prevails. This means that we leave behind the ego, the fear, and the negative low-vibrating human emotions that dominate a large part of any crises or suffering that we chose to engage in. While it is possible to awaken on our own, in order to fully rise into our Christlike energy we need to do so through experiencing the conscious relationship. One of the most well-known highly energetic and spiritual unions is that of the Twin Flames. This concept of divine union is one that has deep historical and cultural roots across the globe even though it goes by different names such as Twin Souls or Kindred Spirits. Regardless, the principle is still the same. In the beginning of time, all souls were sources of energy until that one source was split into two and placed into separate bodies. These souls may travel through lifetimes together, or one may stay behind while the other one experiences life on earth until the time when both are incarnated in the same lifetime so that they can practice the art of the conscious relationship. This allows them to reach greater heights of awareness and consciousness. When we meet a soul who has the possibility to become this conscious relationship with us, we may be beginning awakening ourselves. 32

w w w.myconsciouslifejour nal.com

However, like everything in this life, we are not meant to do it alone and this means that we won’t be able to rise into our highest and best possible selves until we make the choice to pursue and practice a conscious relationship. The process of awakening triggered by the need for conscious relationship can be manifested in a number of ways including: • Body aches and pains

• Feelings of deep sadness or crying for no apparent reason • Sudden changes in jobs, relationships, or life paths • Withdrawal from outgrown personal relationships • Unusual sleep patterns and intense dreams • Feelings of being ungrounded or disconnected from reality • Increasing the frequency of self-talk While these symptoms can seem daunting, the reality is that they will pass but only once we allow ourselves to truly experience and feel each aspect of this journey. The reason that conscious relationships trigger our processing of awakening is that they challenge us to grow in ways we previously resisted. What this means is that each partner not only takes responsibility for their previous life experiences, but they also refrain from blaming the other, being

passive aggressive, jealous, or projecting their fears onto one another. The conscious relationship requires that we also let go of any sort of standardized expectations for a romantic relationship. This doesn’t mean that the union won’t be important to either partner, but just that personal growth for each becomes more important than the actual relationship itself. In the Twin Flame dynamic the love and relationship that both find themselves in is only a byproduct of the growth that both experience, not the overall goal of the relationship. When we meet someone who we recognize as someone from our soul family, we will know instantaneously by the high vibrational energy that we feel between ourselves and them. We also will experience intense eye contact, the perception of just knowing someone upon meeting, and feeling like we’ve met them before. We won’t be able to develop a conscious relationship with every person we meet in this life, which is why it’s important to pay attention and observe the physical and emotional responses we have when meeting someone new. For those souls that recognize something within one another, the possibility for not only building that higher vibrational conscious relationship occurs, but also individual awakening as well. This can often manifest as feelings of ascension when we feel our thoughts and ideas shift from one paradigm to another and within it our views about ourselves and life. While there are many ways in which we can awaken, none is more profound than experiencing the love and self-examination that the conscious relationship provides, because not only are we being cared for in our humanness but our souls are also being encouraged to grow as well. f Kate Rose is an artist, lover, writer, yogi, and mother. The Psychology of

COLOR by Anne Christine Tooley

W

hether we recognize it or not, color influences the choices we make in our lives and the perceptions and judgments we make. Colors are all around us: in our living and work spaces, nature, the clothes we wear, and even the foods we eat. Color affects how we feel about ourselves and the world. Whether we are consciously aware of them or not, colors do have an effect on our thoughts and emotions. We tend to perceive something as “good” depending on the colors we are attracted to, while we tend to judge something as “bad” based on colors we do not like. And this can change depending on where, when, and how the colors are presented. What is perceived as “good” or “bad” can also be influenced by cultural differences, age, and gender. Color is often used in the world outside our homes to persuade us to behave in a certain way. Marketing companies use color to persuade us to purchase their products. Fast food restaurants usually use the warm colors of red, orange, and yellow, which stimulate our appetite and encourage us to eat fast. Prisons have found that rooms painted bright pink calm prisoners. If you understand how colors affect you, then you can consciously choose colors to improve and enrich your life. Your attraction to color is a mirror of what you actually need in any given moment. By trusting your intuitive choices, you will automatically receive what you need. You may only need to immerse yourself in a color you are attracted to for a short time, say for the day. Other times, you find you are repeatedly attracted to a particular color; it is that color that will assist you in a particular stage of your life. Colors that you have loved most of your life are the colors to consider for the places where you spend most of your time such as home and work, and then refining appropriate colors for each space. For example, you may want to paint your bedroom walls in “cool” colors of turquoises or blues promoting relaxation, while using “warm” colors in your kitchen area such as terra cotta red, golds, or warm yellows, which are more

stimulating. For work, you may pick a red suit for an important meeting, implying you are well-prepared and ready to take charge. If you choose blue, perhaps you want to project that you are professional and committed. Determine the specific influences of the six basic colors on you:

RED ORANGE YELLOW GREEN BLUE and VIOLET EXERCISE:

On a day with few distractions, find an object, room, or environment in a predominantly single color and keep it in your immediate visual view for several hours. During this time, make notes about how you feel physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Also note if these feelings change during the time period of the exercise. Do you like the color? How do you feel when you gaze at the color? Do you feel afraid, happy, sad, angry, alert, tired, focused,

distracted, ambivalent, creative, calm, joyful, terrified, excited, shameful, depressed, extroverted, introverted, etc. Orange, for example, could evoke a feeling of creativity or depression, while violet could evoke daydreaming or grieving. You get the idea. It could be single words, phrases, or lengthy descriptions. Note anything that comes to you. Do this exercise separately for each of the six pigment colors on different days. You may think this is a very simplistic exercise, but if you haven’t done it before, especially in a conscious way, I promise that it will be quite revealing and give you color tools to enhance your life. After completing the exercise above, delve into the unlimited resources of information about color qualities to understand the universal properties of each color. I recommend books on my website, and the internet is a wealth of information. Compare the qualities determined by each author with what you felt about that color. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Trust that your impressions are true specifically to you at this time in your life. And also know that your feelings about a particular color can refine and even change over time. Daily, become conscious and aware of the full spectrum of colors around you. Immerse yourself in direct sunlight for twenty or thirty minutes per day (full spectrum of all colors), notice wall paint, home decor, foods, clothes, light bulb type (look for full spectrum), and bed sheets you sleep in for one third of your life! After you discover how the six basic colors affect you personally, your world opens up to infinite possibilities to use color consciously for your mood, ambience, nutrition, spiritual enlightenment, or just for pure pleasure. Color will become your constant ally to enrich your environment and your life. f Anne Christine Tooley has studied, researched, practiced, and taught Vibrational Energy Medicine since 1991. Is Business Consumerism Affecting the Spiritual

hick-fil-A was one of the first. They added a healthy kale salad to their fast food, non-organic chicken menu claiming to be “more healthy” to the growing wholesome and enlightened consumers. Tom’s Shoes gives a pair of shoes to those in need for every pair bought, with an undertone that the more you spend on shoes, the more you change the world. Amazon’s $13.7 billion dollar purchase of Whole Foods is complete; they will lower grocery bills for the modern-age. Contemporary organic shoppers are opening the floodgates to reduce prices of organic foods, healthy produce, and specialty items for the more conscious consumer. Amazon has changed the way consumers buy online, including spiritual products like bumper stickers, trinkets to balance our energy, conferences, meditations, salt lamps, crystals, and an ocean of other spiritual products and experiences that we "must have" to be considered part of the spiritual community. But has consumerism reshaped our spiritual landscape for the better? Let’s start with Oprah. She branded her spiritual and transformationalmovement talk show with the tag line “Live your best life!” Coined as Oprahspeak, this term promoted and prompted the millions of sales of transformational products from “her favorite things” to kick-starting the now billion dollar business of Sara Blakely’s Spanx, to the Neti Pot and Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now book. Many spiritual consumers claimed that Oprahspeak pays regular lip service to empowerment and that her advice is really promoting self-happiness from materialism and spending masked as empowerment. The truth is, she changed our everyday culture and dialect to include respect for the emotional and spiritual journey. She single-handedly revolutionized the book industry through her consistent focus on books and reading which resulted in over 55-plus million books being sold.

34

w w w.myconsciouslifejour nal.com

Whether it’s Oprah or Amazon, all of these industry changes and shifts are coming as a result of more and more Americans seeking purpose and happiness in their quest for spiritual balance and they must have all the right tools to do it. When did this demand for transformational and spiritual development products become so big? It’s called supply and demand. The once conservative corporate industry and middle-class skeptical individuals who shunned the thought of life change and related it to incense filled boutiques, mediums, and yoga classes are now spending billions on mindfulness programs, spiritual products, self-help books, and workshops. It appears that the self-help industry has tied our spiritual salvation to spending lots of money on tools and programs that claim to make our lives better. However all this spending has really come down to one human need—Inner Happiness. For twenty-years the independent New Age bookstores and boutiques have slowly disappeared. Giant retail stores have filled their shelves with books and trinkets addressing the obsession with wellness and spiritual living. Magazines, books, blogs, and spiritual gurus are saturating the marketplace with fantastical wellness and transformational platforms for people on the spiritual path. Yes, consumerism has affected the spiritual community but it’s all good. There’s no end to the simple, low-cost or luxurious options consumers have these days, that is, if you are ready for enlightenment and have the money to spend.

As Karlyn Crowley writes in her anthology, Stories of Oprah: The Oprahfication of American Culture, Winfrey, who had 59 million TV viewers weekly, became one of the mainstream spokespersons for New Age spirituality because “she married the intimacy and individuality of the New Age movement with the adulation and power of a 700 Club-like ministry.” The tendency toward spending for self-improvement and happiness is long-standing. There are few people who actually have the money to take a year off and travel on an exotic spiritual journey as in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Eat, Pray, Love, but they can join a local meditation or a yoga class or indulge in a chakra balancing which is more cost-effective. I believe capitalism is good. I am a believer in wealth and abundance and enjoying that wealth and abundance, the stuff it brings, and the ability to buy that stuff.

Personally, I like the idea of access, awareness, and affordability to transformational products and services in every community whether it’s around the corner or easily found online. Consumerism has had a positive effect on spiritual expansion. Our economy depends on people buying stuff. As long as there are human beings on earth we will always seek the stuff to promote our spiritual happiness. For me, it’s exciting to see authentic salt rock lamps in Walgreens, Tibetan pink salt in Costco, incense at the convenience store, and soul music at the grocery store. You never know when that aha! spiritual moment will come from buying some stuff.f Sharron Ragan is a brand creativity consultant and intuitive change agent. ALZHEIMER'S SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE by Rhonda Weisberg

W

e are addressing this topic solely from a spiritual reference point. We would ask readers to temporarily put aside familiar medical or genetic factors involved in Alzheimer’s disease. For now, we ask you to accept the idea that all illness is “created” from thoughts/ expectations, emotions, and for spiritual growth. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease, there are a number of reasons why a person/soul might find themselves with this malady. What follows are the primary spiritual causes of this disorder. You can determine which, if any, applies to you or your loved one. • Exhaustion and/or “overwhelment.” The sufferer may have been overwhelmed most of their life with too much responsibility—a never-ending life of serving others, for example. They may also feel overwhelmed with the idea of planning for their death—not only worrying about the details but having fears and concerns for the people they leave behind, especially if those left behind seem, or are, dependent on them in some way. • Fear of death. The Alzheimer’s patient may have had a lifelong fear of dying and so has chosen a way to ease into it. As Alzheimer’s progresses, patients tend to be out of their bodies more and more, and will enter into a state where the life they have outside of their body (in a higher dimension) becomes more and more their reality. Their physical life feels more and more like an ongoing dream from which they move in and out. It is this dream-like state that causes the confusion and frustration outsiders see as the patient struggles to get a grasp on a world that seems intangible or ephemeral.

From the patient’s perspective, their non-physical life provides them with much peace, comfort, emotional support, and even intellectual stimulation—one reason why they may actually seem happier at times. This enables an easy and safe-feeling transition into death, which serves them quite well. • A need to feel nurtured. A patient may have had a life where he/she was always giving to others and/or was unable to accept love and assistance from the people around them, thus creating a huge imbalance in their lives. On a subconscious level, they long for their lives as infants where they were loved and nurtured and all their needs were met. Spiritually speaking, “creating” Alzheimer’s disease before they die is an excellent way to bring balance to the totality of their life, bring healing and closure to this incarnation, and allow the next incarnation to begin totally fresh.

Of course, there are as many variations on these themes as there are individuals with Alzheimer’s. How long

a patient might live once “diagnosed” with Alzheimer’s is an individual matter. When the soul feels like the healing or work they need to accomplish in this incarnation is complete, they will likely move on. The most important thing to get across is that no matter how “out of it” your loved one might seem, they do access other dimensions in such a way that they fully understand and are aware of what is going on in their three- dimensional lives. Visits, kindness, expressions of love and gratitude, little gifts, etc. are fully received and appreciated in a different dimensional context. Even though this dis-ease manifests from thoughts, expectations, emotions, and for spiritual growth, there are life lessons at work that will bring the soul closer to its true self. f Rhonda Weisberg is an artist and intuitive reader. INSIGHTS

lzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for the loss of memory and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for sixty to eighty percent of dementia cases. The greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are sixty five and older. But, Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,000 Americans under the age of sixty five have younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Despite tremendous efforts of researchers there is still no treatment to prevent the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. November/December 2017

STAGE 1 | mind THE EGOIC CHILD'S MIND by Martha Burgess Novak

T

he mind of the ego is called the egoic child’s mind. This mind is where fear resides. When you were a child and things happened to you, the egoic child’s mind was there, starting at the age of eighteen months, to keep you alive, safe, and intact by making sense of your world. The egoic child’s mind is self - absorbed, self-indulgent, feels alone, dependent, has a sense of abandonment, is frightened, emotionally immature, and often confused. It’s all about you at the expense of others. Or it’s all about others at the expense of you, but because this makes you a victim, it’s still all about you. It all comes back to you in the end because this is the part of you that thinks and feels like a child with a child’s limited perception. Your issues are just those ideas of life based on your perceptions. For example, the child whose father is a workaholic surmises that his schoolwork isn’t interesting enough to engage his father. He’ll grow up to overcompensate for his lack of self-esteem or feel he has no talent worth exploring. The girl whose mother puts her vanity before her child, learns that she’s not important either. She grows up to be just like her mother, shallow and concerned with appearances. Or she’ll feel she’s not worth anything since she could never live up to her mother’s standards. The boy whose father never sees that he is suffering under the criticism of a difficult mother thinks he is too insignificant to be cared about. He’ll grow up to believe

all women are shrews and he’ll avoid them like his father did, remaining alone or having a series of unfulfilling relationships because he never learned to work through a problem. Lest you judge the egoic child’s mind as “bad,” it’s not. This is the place you start your journey to consciousness, that part of you that contains the seeds of potential, talents, gifts, abilities, gratitude, happiness, and unconditional love. Confront this undeveloped whole enough and you will have secured entry into the Developed Whole where your potential, joy, and fulfillment lies. How do you start? You start by knowing you. Go to an energy worker, a psychologist, a therapist, a minister, someone who will confront you with what you are doing based on your egoic child’s mind experience and mindset. Find a good truth-teller, one who will confront your avoidance. As the old perceptions recede and new more global ones take their place, you’ll find yourself thinking more positive thoughts, being more generous, having more compassion, being more intuitive, and, most of all, being more loving. f Martha Burgess Novak is a healer/counselor and peak performance trainer working with individuals and corporations. CLARY SAGE*

Essential Oils by Maria Angelova

C

lary Sage or Salvia Sclarea is an essential oil with versatile applications. The Latin word “salvare” translates to “heal” while “sclarea” translates to “clear.” Clary Sage contains sclareol, a phytoestrogen or plant-based estrogen mimicking human estrogen. That is why it’s probably best known to support normal female hormonal balance and is a hit among menopausal females (and their husbands). Fertile women benefit from Clary Sage especially around their monthly cycles.

STAGE 2 | body MIRROR, MIRROR—OUR BODY IMAGE DISTORTED by Melba Black

Clary Sage’s key constituent is linalyl acetate, an ester, known for its fragrance but also emotional balancing and soothing effect, which is why Clary Sage is recognized for being uplifting yet calming to both mind and spirit. Studies of Clary Sage show the essential oil possesses an antidepressant-like effect through regulating dopamine, and menopausal women found decreasing cortisol (stress) levels and increasing serotonin (feelings of happiness and improved mood) levels. Clary Sage can be used topically or diffused. It should be diluted with a vegetable oil for topical application. Pillow Spray/ Air Freshener Recipe: 4-ounce glass spray bottle 3 ounces water 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (optional) 3 to 6 drops Clary Sage Spritz pillow before going to bed. How

do you think you look? Body image is the mental representation you create of you, but it may or may not bear close relation to how others see you. Body image is subject to all kinds of distortion from the internal elements of our emotions, moods, early experiences, attitudes of our parents, and much more, and it strongly influences behavior. Preoccupation with and distortions of body image are widespread among American women and, to a lesser extent, among males. These perceptions are driving forces in eating disorders that feed severe anxiety and body image distortion.

The connection between your feelings and how you see your body is critical. When you feel bad about something, whether it is reality or a thought, your body responds. It is always listening to your instructions. Eating disorders occur when a person’s intense preoccupation with their “fatness” leads them to extreme measures to control their weight. Considerable research indicates that anorexia and bulimia are outgrowths of a negative body image and that today’s increase to epidemic proportions of eating disorders is related to the intense pressure put on people to conform to ultra-slender role models of societal beauty norms. Research shows that dieting to lose weight and fear of fatness are now common in girls as young as nine years old and escalate dramatically during adolescence, particularly among those at the heavier end of the spectrum. The risk of developing an eating disorder is eight times higher in dieting fifteen-year-old girls than in non-dieting fifteen-year-old girls.

TRUE CENTER

where personal transformation meets love in action

Preoccupation with body image is also a metaphor for something larger going on in the culture. Over a decade ago, the late social critic, Christopher Lasch, argued that our culture of mass consumption encourages a new kind of selfconsciousness through which people have learned to judge themselves not merely against others, but through others’ eyes. The “image” projected by possessions, physical attractiveness, clothes, and “personality” replaces experience, skills, and character as gauges of personal identity, health, and happiness. There is a belief (myth) that how you look determines your security and happiness, especially for women. How do you rise above all of these powerful influences and still be content and happy with yourself inside and out? Accept your body for what it is, starting with you becoming your best coach and friend instead of your worst critic! Pay attention to how you talk to yourself about yourself. And be thankful for all that your body does for you. The more you honor your body, the more it will honor you. f Melba M. Black, PhD, CLC is a writer, mentor, innovator, and scholar. STAGE 3 | spirit COMMUNICATING WITH SPIRIT AND HIGHER SELF by Brenda Staab

C

onnecting with your Higher Self includes reaching altered states of consciousness with visualization directives. Sitting in a quiet, meditative state, being undisturbed, is the perfect way to begin. Remember, it is important never to go into an altered state or meditative state out in public or driving a car or equipment or while caring for the elderly or young. And certainly not while drinking or taking prescribed or illegal medications or drugs. Intending to reach your Higher Self and Guides is no small decision, but one that can provide many rewards. If you are a beginner, I recommend that you learn this process under the supervision of a trained individual who understands the protocols and is capable of setting up a protective grid. One never leaves town without knowing where you are going, who you are going to be with, what you want to achieve while there and, most importantly, how you get home! State out loud your intentions and invite your Higher Self, Guardian Angels, and Life Guides to join you in this adventure. Using breathing techniques with specific visualizations will prepare your body, mind, and spirit. Relax the body intentionally, head to toe, while breathing in to a count of four, hold for a count of four, and exhale to a count of four. Do this several times until you begin to feel the shift of energy within your body. Then breathe normally and comfortably.

Allow your mind’s eye to go to a place where you feel happy, safe, and loved unconditionally. Keeping your eyes closed allows you to maintain a light subconscious mindset. See, feel, hear, and know you are now in this new safe space. Examine all the details. Know this space is of a higher vibratory energy than regular waking life. Remember the statement “As you think, so you are.” Now see a set of stairs that take you up one level. Go explore that space now. This is a space where your Higher Self resides. You will find that energy in the center of this space. Your job is simply to acknowledge this presence. See, hear, feel, and know this as your Higher Self. You can ask questions at this point or you can step into this persona of your Higher Self and continue your journey. You can accomplish many things from this space of Being. Or you can move one level higher to meet with Guides as your Higher Self. This information is for those who are curious about how to get into this space. I suggest you sit in with a class or private tutor to experience this in real time. f Brenda Staab is an international Medium, Channel, and Teacher in the fields of self-help, psychic development, spiritual growth, and sharing messages from Loved Ones and Guides. O STAGE 4 | integration INTEGRITY IS THE ESSENCE OF SUCCESS by Burge Smith-Lyons

ne of the definitions of integrity is “the state of being whole and undivided.” The philosophy of R. Buckminster Fuller, one of my mentors, about the generalized principle of integrity can be simply put as “holding your shape.” The integrity of steel does not bend. Our word is our bond. Fuller asks, “Do you operate with integrity and have the courage to go along with your own minds, or do you have to go along with the crowd? If we really dare to go with our own minds, we will go into an entirely new era in humanity.” He asks us to, “Commit to making humanity a success one hundred percent of the time.” He asks us, “Do we dare to qualify ourselves to serve one another without letting go of our principles?” To hold our shape we need to be able to say no, provoke a boundary at times and not give in to other people’s wishes. Many of us do not want to hurt other peoples’ feelings and think we are responsible for their feelings. That imagined responsibility is a function of codependency and wanting to be loved. This feeling sometimes keeps us off course so we get redirected and see a “squirrel” and chase after it!

STAGE 4 | integration Many times we do not have an unwavering vision of what we want. If our purpose is to add value and serve, it is easier to not get sidetracked with shiny objects or people trying to change our focus. Successful people know where they stand and they take responsibility for their thoughts, beliefs, and actions. They hold themselves accountable for mistakes or broken agreements. So, one of the keys to being successful is respecting and trusting yourself. If you make a mistake and break an agreement, do not beat yourself up or invalidate yourself. Correct the mistake and renegotiate the agreement as fast as possible. To regain trust with others, make small agreements and keep them. This builds trust and respect from others and for yourself. Your word is your bond and to hold your shape is the integrity of who you are and how you show up responsibly in the world. Anytime you blame others, shame yourself, or make excuses, you are giving your power away. If you take responsibility for your actions, thoughts, and beliefs, you have the power to make a change. Your ability to respond and be accountable determines the quality of your life. This is the essence of being a successful human being. f Burge Smith-Lyons is an international bestselling author, motivational speaker, intuitive healer, certified rebirther, hypnotherapist, channeler, minister, and founder and CEO of The Essence of Being, Inc. CONSCIOUS 360 Your Bridge Between

Heaven and Earth November-December 2017 by Lorelei Robbins

Tis true without lying, certain and most true. That which is below is like that which is above and that which is above is like that which is below. – Isaac Newton

T

he intention of Star Talk is that you consciously harness the wisdom from the heavens and practically apply it in your daily life here on earth to understand your gifts and talents at greater depth, and to manifest your heart’s desires in perfect Divine timing. You are always at choice to believe that what is going on in the heavens, whatever the “cosmic” weather, the Universe ALWAYS has your back. So, whether planets are direct or “retrograde,” there is always a “rightness” to the season. Jupiter, the planet of truth, wisdom, and growth begins the first full month of his year-long journey in powerful, magical, transformative Scorpio until November 9, 2018. What was forged during Jupiter’s tenancy in cooperative, collaborative Libra will either be solidified and locked down in Scorpio, or it will bite the dust, HARD, not to be resurrected. Problems and issues must be addressed now, and old ways of doing things must change. This demands right action, a change of perspective, digging deeper to understand the greater meaning of who you are and the elimination of stubborn, self-defeating attitudes. While this may be frustrating initially, if you stay the course, your patience and effort can create extraordinary achievements and accomplishments! Jupiter’s transit through intense and passionate Scorpio urges you to go after your heart’s desires. You learn and understand that in order to heal, you have to cut out the “extras” and focus on what really matters to you. Because Jupiter’s nature is extravagant, you must guard against “too much.” Moderation doesn’t come naturally to either Jupiter or Scorpio. Scorpio is a water sign. Water signs encompass feelings and emotions, and Jupiter in a water sign teaches you to embrace your emotions—to understand them, go with your feelings, and express them on a social level. Jupiter in Scorpio encourages you to grow and expand on an emotional level, and because Scorpio is focused and deep, it encourages you to develop intimacy—with yourself and with others. Free will permits you to choose the Jupiter in Scorpio energy for better or for worse. If you navigate this alchemical process wisely, an important segment of your life will be purged, purified, and transformed by the time Jupiter exits Scorpio in November 2018. f

STAGE 5 | balance SEVEN WAYS TO DEAL WITH STRESS by Shannon Loe

Y

ou know that feeling: you’re short-tempered or impatient with your partner or your child, your heart and mind are racing, you become easily annoyed, your jaw is constantly clenched, you suffer from insomnia. That panic is a constant. Stress is exhausting! Dealing with disorganization, chaos, and life’s simple daily experiences can cause feelings of frustration, anxiety, and being overwhelmed. Chronic stress has even been found to trigger longterm changes in brain structure and function.

Here are seven easy ways to feel lighter, calmer, more relaxed, and more centered: 1. T ap into that “inner smile.” Finding your inner smile changes your thought pattern. It’s hard not to feel better when you’re smiling. What’s even better is when that inner smile fills your insides and becomes an outer smile. 2. W rite it all down. Use a brain dump to clear out all of those to-dos. Grab a journal and write down everything you need to get finished, ideas floating in your head, and anything you’re afraid you’ll forget. Getting it onto paper is a fantastic way to gain clarity around what you need to complete and how you’ll get it done. 3. B reathe. Take thirty seconds to focus on your breath. Close your eyes and feel your chest rise and fall as you take three deep breaths in and let them out slowly. Doing so helps slow your heartbeat, bring you into the present moment, and create a sense of calm. Bonus points if you let out an audible sigh as you exhale.

wanted to hate this book. It’s bold, it’s blunt, and it’s deep, apparently too deep for my puny mind to grasp. Reading the first few chapters felt like slogging through mud. Katie experienced a profound depression for years that left her incapable of caring for herself. And in that abyss she awoke to the beauty of all that is. From that universal nothingness and all-ness, she derived The Work, her program of four questions that move you from your stories into the truth. The Work is brilliant. I’ve used it to tackle some deep-seated beliefs (particularly around family) and have come away with new understanding. But A Mind at Home with Itself is based on the Diamond Sutra, the teachings of Buddha, and those teachings can feel like diving into a world of koans. The Buddha said, “All bodhisattvas who sincerely seek the truth should control their minds by focusing on one thought only: ‘When I attain enlightenment, I will liberate all sentient beings. . . . And yet, in reality there is no self to attain enlightenment and no sentient beings to be liberated.” Really? How do you wrap your mind around that? Keep reading. At some point the mind lets go and the words begin to penetrate, to make sense. You may not understand every sentence or every paragraph or even every chapter. But the more you read the more you feel at home. One could say that if we can simply conquer the perplexities of the mind, we can exist in that blissful state of peace and harmony. But Katie would gently remind us that there is no conquering. “The mind can never be controlled; it can only be questioned, loved, and met with understanding.” I knew the book had made an impact on me when I read a line in a historical novel about a brotherhood known for its charitable works, and I recalled Buddha's words and thought, “Yes, but that is nothing compared to one person who is able to embody and live the truth of self-realization.” A Mind at Home with Itself offers questions galore for a path to mindfulness. If you are not a student (one who questions), I urge you to become one. If you are already a student, thank you for your contributions. And if you are a teacher, I humbly bow to the divine within you that reflects the divinity within us all. f Nanette Littlestone is a best-selling author, editor, writing coach, and publisher with Words of Passion, helping new and award-winning authors to write with passion and inspire others. The Flow of Endless Frequency The Flow of Endless Frequency Instead of attempting to escape From something Attempt to escape Into something Into the Void The Wholeness The All That Is Or Nothingness However you term it Does not matter Just go Go to the sacred space Within Into the disappearing dust Of unformed stars The spiritual center At the core of creation Where there is always peace Always calm Always life Uninterrupted pure BEing Where there is always A soft breeze Caressing the underbelly of consciousness This place whispers of our Oneness In vibrant harmonies

This place is the foundation Of our Foundation Where the Pillars are set deep in Original Birth And the river known as God Flows in endless frequency Come Come be the wave of sound That finds its way To harmonize With these whispers Of divinity These whispers Not only tickle The underbelly of our consciousness They tone our hearing So that we not only listen With awakened awareness We become the very Awakening We are Listening to We have no need to escape From anything The only journey ahead Is to escape into Everything.
