PRACTICAL INFORMATION Tem o l u Tit a

22

If you are planning to make Dubai your new home, here are some facts you would want to know about the culture and traditions in the UAE:

Language

Although Arabic is the official language in the UAE, visitors to Dubai will find that English is the most widely spoken language for business, education, trade and tourism. All road and shop signs, restaurant menus and tourist information leaflets are both in Arabic and English. Also all universities teach their programmes solely in English.

Currency

There are no currency regulations and foreign currency of almost any denomination is exchanged in the UAE. The dirham is the official currency of the UAE. Dirham notes are in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 denominations. The dirham is divided into 100 fils, coins include Dh1, 50, 25, 10 and 5 fils (10 and 5 fils are rarely used). The prefix is also written as AED. The dirham is index linked to the dollar and the average exchange rate is Dh3.671 = US$ 1.00.

Religion

Although an Islamic country, the UAE respects other religions and followers are allowed to practice their beliefs. There are Hindu temples and Catholic, Anglican and Protestant churches in Dubai.

Clothing

Lightweight summer clothing is ideal with a wrap, sweater or jacket for cooler winter nights and airconditioned premises. Although the dress code in the UAE is generally casual, people dress formally in the evening. Since you are visiting a Muslim country, you must also note that bikinis, swimsuits and revealing tops should be confined to the beach or swimming pool.

Climate Dubai enjoys an arid subtropical climate, with blue skies and sunshine all year round. Temperatures range from lows of 10°C to extreme summer highs of 48°C. The average maximum daily temperature in January is 24°C and the average maximum daily temperature in July is 41°C when humidity is very high. The hottest months are between June and September, when temperatures can soar to 45°C. Temperatures are more moderate the rest of the year, with the coolest time being between December and March. There is very little rainfall in Dubai, but when showers do fall it is mainly in the cooler months. The Dubai weather conditions have made the city very well equipped to cope with the heat, and all buildings, malls, public facilities and transport are air-conditioned.

Safety

Dubai is within the top 12 safest cities in the world for expatriates. This is reflected in its very low crime index, and high standard of living. Students should be respectful of the law as the nation has a zero tolerance policy towards illegal substance use, and other forms of petty crime are highly punishable.

Transport

Public transport in Dubai is divided into land transport, which comprises buses, metro, taxis and a tram system, as well as marine transport, which includes water taxis, waterbuses and a ferry. Students will find that getting around in Dubai is inexpensive with bus rides costing Dh4, and taxi fares starting at Dh3. The metro is also an excellent way to get around, as it is economical, modern, safe and convenient. 23
