a good male hand could realise between £12 -£16 for 6 months

OHirings at

Shotley

Bridge The mid 1800's was a time of hardship for many, especially with the strict division's of the social classes. Our area had just started to boom as part of the Industrial advancements taking place and the general workforce had just began to find their voices. It was also about this time that the Shotley Bridge Hirings began. Although Consett is very much the main area now it was Shotley Bridge which was still the epicentre of the area for trade and commerce in the 1840's -50's. The Hirings were a place were servants/workers could meet up with prospective employers /masters and come to an arrangement on wages for the coming half year. The more experienced and able workers

obviously got the best rates of pay. Most area's had Hiring Fairs of some kind, especially in the rural communities. It was almost a human market only were the people for sale could set their own price. In the 1860's a good male hand could realise between £12 -£16 for 6 months, whereas a youngster would be £8 -£12 and Females £4 -£8. The Hirings were held twice a year at Shotley Bridge on the nearest Monday to 13 May and 11 November respectively which was set in 1851 and were seen as a very effective way to hire and meet prospective employees. It was also a way for workers to have a say in what effectively was the setting of a minimum wage. Everyone met on Front Street, Shotley Bridge

and the day started quite early, most of the business side of the event being over by mid day. The Hirings became a big event and people would come from all over the area not just to find work, but also for the celebration which would ensue. They became like a fête with market stalls, mobile theatre companies and music and lots of alcohol. In a report of the 1870's it was noted that the police presence was doubled on these events due to crime and frivolity which would lead to sometimes unwanted nuisance and trouble. The Hirings lasted all the way until the 1890's at which point there seems to be no more information about them. Maybe the new employment laws and legislation's of the land made them unnecessary or maybe they just became obsolete. Whatever the reason it was a fascinating part of our history which helped lay the foundation's of a working wage and help cement the rights of the working classes.

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)

For more information about CSCS tests and cards please visit the CSCS Website, if you wish to book a test please contact us via www.smartt.me.uk/contact-us/ or by calling us on 01207 593465.

CSCS cards show that cardholders working in construction and labour based professions have the required training and qualifications to be working in construction safely and effectively. Most major building sites, contractors, and homebuilders require their employees to hold a valid CSCS card as evidence that they are skilled in their work environment and committed to safety. Earning the CSCS card requires the completion of a brief test, to prove that those claiming the card have the required knowledge and skills to be safe and effective in the workplace.

SMARTT have launched a brand new CSCS test centre at Glenroyd House here in Consett, County Durham. This centre offers testing facilities for those wishing to earn a CSCS card and is a CSCS approved testing centre.

health supplements, you name it and I’ve tried it!!!. Living in a house with 3 boys I tend to feed my passion and splash out on all the latest products, tools and fashions. So, with all this in mind, one Friday night after I just tried out my amazing new hot air styler, I decided I wanted to tell the world how fabulous it was. In my wisdom, I decided to set up a FACEBOOK page called ''Tried and Tested'' and nothing prepared me for the overwhelming response. In just 4 weeks I had over 10,000 members, all beautiful girls sharing their glory products, tips and love of everything beauty.

What is Tried & Tested?

Tried and Tested is a brand new Facebook group for woman to share their love and hate for everything Health, Beauty and Fashion related. From your most expensive to budget brands, there is something for everyone. I am the ambassador of the Brand as well as the owner of the group. I share exclusive discounts for the members and good buys as well as my members sharing their fantastic finds and reviews. It started local but has grown and grown as far as Dubai, South Africa, Australia and beyond.

Why did you start Tried & Tested?

I’m your typical girl next door, I am a part time model, manager of a busy dental practice, wife and mum of 2 beautiful boys. My friends always joke that I was blessed with boys as myself and even just 1 little princess would be too much to handle ha ha. So your probably building up a picture here and yes, I’m kind of over the top. I love everything beauty and fashion related from make up to clothes to shoes to

How does Tried & Tested help women?

Women find out what is worth their money and what isn't, what’s hot and what’s not! They can ask for a certain product to help with a problem they may have and all the ladies will give their honest opinion on what they recommend. We also share problems as we are all women. I am the guinea pig for trying new products and treatments and the extent I go to for these women can be above and beyond. I’ve had a piercing so I could review the piercer and I’m booked for some lip tattooing so I can review that treatment. I give good honest reviews on treatments and products, if it hurts then I’m going to tell you it hurts!!! I then work with the businesses who have offered up the treatments or products to bring the women an exclusive discount. I get a treatment/product, the members get the discounts and the businesses get the business!!! Every one’s a winner. I was also accepted as an affiliate for a number of top high street stores so I find out what’s on offer before everyone else so I can share this with the women.

What support have you received?

I have received so much support, firstly off local businesses helping me by donating their services, my family, and of course my loyal members. They are what make me carry on with the group. I get loads of messages off women telling me how much they enjoy the group and how it’s helped them as well as having women come up to me when I’m out buzzing about it. That’s the best feedback you can get and makes the hard work worth it.

What are your goals with Tried & Tested?

To make it as big as possible, To work closely with more businesses and retailers and to make Tried and Tested by Lisa a recognised recommendation throughout the beauty and fashion industry. To have my Blog and Website up and running.

Plans for the Future?

Eventually do this full time and as a job not a hobby.

Would you like to thank anyone?

I would like to thank Firefly New Media for my logo and to Marco from Firefly New Media for all the support and advice he has given me. In the early days he assured me this was going to be big and he was right. I need to thank Industrial Work wear for donating my gym clothing with my logo on so I can advertise as I work out. I need to thank PMP print for donating my leaflets and posters. I’d also like to thank Sarah Thew Photography. I need to give a huge thank you to all my beautiful members but most of all I need to thank my husband for being a single parent for the last couple of month. It has been hard but he has supported me 100% as he always does so THANK YOU xxx

Hello from A D Scott Asbestos and Think asbestos Ltd, we are a Durham based Asbestos Consultancy offering accredited asbestos surveys, sampling and inspection and Licensed asbestos removal. Being one of only approximately 380 companies in the UK who currently hold a license to deal with asbestos we are vetted directly by the Health and Safety Executive under what is a very strict vetting process: This is because Asbestos is the second most legislated area of work in the UK and is second only to the Nuclear industry, and not without reason: There is more ill health and deaths in the UK as a result of exposure to asbestos than in any other work related area. At present this is in the

Because of these alarming figures it is a legal requirement that any person working in building or the allied trades; plumbing, electrician, IT installation, telephone installation, demolition, surveying‌ the list is pretty comprehensive. It is a legal requirement that all persons have annual asbestos training appropriate to their work, this could range from basic awareness training to training on working with/in the vicinity of and the removal of asbestos. As such we would like to extend our offer of a free awareness training course to anyone in the building or allied trades. This short awareness session takes approximately 3 hours. So why not start the year as you intend to go on. I would like to state that this is FREE, simply email info@adscs.co.uk and we will be back in touch with dates

for the course. We understand that time out of work can be difficult so there is the potential to hold this session on a Saturday or Sunday. Remember this is FREE and will keep you and your company compliant for a whole year, it could also save your life or that of a loved one. If you really do find the time difficult we also have online accredited training facilities where you can simply login on the internet – these cover asbestos, fire and legionella just go to www.adscs.co.uk/ health-safety-e-learning/asbestos/ If you have any questions or would simply like some advice, please feel free to call or email us via our web sites www.adscs.co.uk or www.thinkasbestos.co.uk Or Freephone 0800 121 47 43 from a landline or 01207 438 313 from a mobile. Introducing Ollie & Nina by Neil Sullivan A Little bit about Neil: I was born in Blackhill and lived at Mortimer Street under the shadow of the slag heaps. Aged 7 our family moved up the hill to Consett, Oakdale Road, where we lived under a near constant cloud of red dust and rain. Them were the days! At 19 I flew the nest and headed south to London to pursue a career in advertising. Throughout my career I have been most fortunate to have travelled the world and lived in some amazing and exotic places. And just like the Prodigal Son, there came a time for me to head back home again. On my return there was no fattened calf awaited me, just a cracking breakfast at Wetherspoons! That’ll do nicely thank you. So here I am, setting up home and setting up a new business – a design, advertising and digital agency called The Results Agency - and glad to be back in all- new-improved Consett.

Allow me to introduce Ollie and Nina. They are real dogs but I have taken the liberty of recording their daft goings-on in a cartoon strip called ‘OLLIE and NINA and…’ Ollie is a Collie/Saluki cross, Nina is a Whippet/Saluki cross and they are both rescue dogs (they rescued me from my sofa).

Ollie is all heart. He is spontaneous, silly, soppy and loving. Nina is more thoughtful, wise and gentle. You’ll see this reflected in their stories. Together they make a right comedy duo. I just observe their hilarious antics and then DRAW!

Relocation, relocation!

After 24 years of providing a highly regarded day nursery service, the owners of North Durham’s Shotley Bridge Nursery School Ltd have announced a relocation to new premises, in time for the new term in September 2015. Looking to expand on current capabilities, the nursery’s owners were attracted to the new site at Blackhill, near Consett, for the advantage of a larger interior and outdoor play area, which will allow them to expand their current provision from 42 to 98 full-time places. (Include contact phone number)

The nursery is currently located in The Old Town Hall in Shotley Bridge, but will be moving to Blackhill with plans to open in time for the new term in September.

At present the nursery employs 17 members of staff but will be looking to employ around 17 more as the nursery expands, creating further job opportunities within the area. Work has already begun at the site of the old Co-operative building and more recently the former Pimpernel offices opposite St Mary’s Church.

Nursery directors Anne Young and Laura Bowery said, “The nursery has been sourcing sites and properties for the past 18 months and after viewing a number of places within the catchment area, decided on the traditional stone built property in Blackhill.

“There are also plans for a large, enclosed outdoor play area allowing the children to play outside in the fresh air safely.”

“The building has huge potential and plans are to make it a state-of-the-art facility which

“Planning includes a hall which can be used by the wider community and the nursery also intends to offer breakfast clubs, after school care and various classes for children on a weekend including movement and music.

The nursery has built an excellent reputation over the years and prides itself on its warm and welcoming family atmosphere which is one of the key attributes it is determined to maintain during the move.
