Edmundbyers - By Brian Harrison

Your Free February 2017 Consett Magazine

EDMUNDBYERS - CHURCHES & WITCHES Only a stones throw from Castleside lies the small hamlet of Edmundbyers. Its archaeological origins dating back to as early as the Mesolithic period with the hunter gatherers. There are also signs of later habitation during the bronze age, sometime between 2100 – 700 BC. The first documented history however can be found, like many of our area, within the Boldon Book.

www.consettmagazine.com

The Boldon book was ordered by Bishop Hugh du Pudsey in 1183, one hundred years after the Doomsday book which had missed everything north of the Tees. Lord Hugh was made Bishop of Durham in 1153 and was said to have been a very ambitious man. He died on 11 March 1195. The Boldon Book was in fact a survey giving a basic inventory of land values and annual yield. The entry for Edmundbyers states: Alan of Bruntoft holds Edmundbires for his service in the forest, as is expressed in his charter. The land of Blanchland, which belongs to Alan Marshall, yields ½ mark. The name Edmundbyers comes from the old English

“Eadmunds” Barn or Byre giving historical weight to the area being settled well before the Boldon Books account. The history of the Church of St Edmunds dates back to at least the Medieval period, c1100, although it is strongly believed that this building stands on even older foundations, possibly back into the Anglo-Saxon and beyond. The village is of picturesque and historical nature as though time had stood still and is now a conservation area. However, the village has also had its share of grisly goings on. In November 1641, Margaret Hooper, a local women, had visited a farm just up the road at Huntstanworth. On her way back home it is said that she become possessed and showed signs of derangement. Terrified she tried to chant the Lord's Prayer but was unable to and began to foam at the mouth. She then saw what she could only describe as a black beast, which knocked her off her feet and dragged her kicking and screaming into the near by hall. The people who witnessed the event talked of the presence of a terrible

stench as well as flames and smoke emanating from the monster. They immediately dropped to their knees and prayed for help. All present described seeing the presence of an angelic child like being which dismissed the evil and Mrs Hooper began to recover almost immediately. Another well documented event was that of the Derwent witches trial. The Newcastle Assizes of April 3rd 1673, states that Ann Armstrong of Edmundbyers attended a witch's meeting. During the said trial Ann went on to name several individuals who had also taken part. These people including Dorothy Green, John and Ann Whitfield of her village of Edmundbyers, Mary Hunter of Birkenside, as well as many others. The main accusations were that the accused had bewitched horses and oxen causing trouble and problems for their owners. Also that Mary Hunter was said to have transformed into a swallow after which she flew around and under her neighbour's horse cursing it. The poor horse was said to have died in less than a week.

Oh Yes It Is! - By Lorraine Weightman

the age of six I'd caught the bug and loved attending the live shows in The Empire Theatre.

For a while my Mother helped with the costumes at the CBS and I was allowed to tag along to watch the performances as well as the rehearsals. I remember seeing South Pacific and joining in with all the songs as I'd seen the film so many times.

From a very early age I loved going to the theatre with my Mother. Brought up in a theatrical family, she was not only a brilliant tap dancer, but could sing and loved to entertain. I guess she got that from my grandmother who would get up to dance at the drop of a hat.

Today the pantomime tradition is carried on by The CBS with our very own Neil Pears treading the boards as the Dame. Who can resist the thrill of shouting 'He's Behind You', while watching the goodies enter stage right and the baddies stage left - which goes back to the medieval mystery plays, where the right side of the stage symbolised Heaven and the left side symbolised Hell I know, I love the audience participation, the ancient innuendo mixed with topical references and of course the song and dance.

I understand the first of these in 1960 was performed by Consett Citizens Choir who were founded in 1949 by William Westgarth. Jean Stokoe - who I taught with in later years - recalls joining the choir just after the first pantomime and enjoyed playing the principal girl for many years after that.

Historical pantomime continues as a popular form of theatre, and is it alive in Consett - Oh yes it is!

There's something magical about being transported into the world of Pantomime and Consett has a rich tradition of talent to look back on. The role of Dame for many years was played by Hughie Malone who did a brilliant job

'A Geordie told me he was really good at flirting, so I threw him in the swimming pool, But he sank!'

'What's the difference between a kangaroo & a kangaroot? One is native animal of Australia and the other is a Geordie stuck in a lift!'

'Someone just told me to stop acting like a flamingo, so I had to put my foot down!'

www.consettmagazine.com

Following the family tradition at the age of five I went to Miss Maddison's dance academy in Blackhill for ballet and tap lessons before we moved to Liverpool for a while to live. Here we went to the Royal Court to see Russ Conway, Tommy Steele and The Springfield's with Dusty belting out the big numbers. My Mother bought me an autograph book and pushed in to the front at the stage door, using me as a decoy as I think she secretly wanted the autographs more than I did. So on my return to Consett at

After being introduced to Sunday Night at The Palladium on television, marvelling at Shirley Bassey's costumes while singing along to Danny la Rue, the comic in a frock, I was hooked; and round about the same time I fell in love with Pantomimes. As luck would have it there was one at Consett Empire in January every year.

and was a firm favourite. The choir continued for many years entertaining local folk and bringing the theatre alive. In fact they are still performing today and regularly give concerts.

Places to Go: South Shields

Places to Go: Kingston upon Hull

Your Free Free January February/ 2017 Consett Magazine Your February 2017 Durham Magazine

February is never a great time for long trips out by train. It's still dark in the late afternoon and we often get the worst weather. So if we do get one of those bright, crisp, February days, why not try a visit to South Shields? Depending on where you live, this might involve a rail journey into Newcastle from north or south, or up the coast into Sunderland and then a trip on the Tyne and Wear Metro via the north Tyne loop or via Pelaw on the route to South Shields. The cut out and keep Metro map might help you, and with an all zones rail fare add-on you can travel in zones A, B and C, and also use the Nexus short ferry crossing between North Shields and South Shields which runs every half hour throughout the day. It leaves on the hour and half hour from the North Shields side, and quarter to and quarter past from the South Shields side.

www.consettmagazine.com www.durhammagazine.co.uk

Don't think of crossing under the river through the fascinating pedestrian tunnel. It's closed for refurbishment and asbestos removal, and the replacement bus service between Jarrow and Howdon, whilst free to use, is not very exciting.

Closest to the ferry terminal is the new attraction called the National Centre for the Written Word. The Word, for short, opened in October 2016 and is a library with interesting exhibition spaces, at the moment profiling the famous film director Ridley Scott of Alien and Blade Runner fame. There’s also an area to record north eastern dialects, and a screen reviewing all the ships in the Tyne and out on open water. You can find additional information on the vessels, their origins and destinations. Ok, I am sure there is an app which will enable you to do the same thing at home, but it’s more impressive when you can see the real ships in front of you. Back in the 1970s, the Word would have been called the South Tyneside Central Library, but this is a brave reinvention of the traditional library for the internet age. Several places in the north east have Roman remains. In South Shields, however, buildings have been reconstructed to look like they were in Roman times. The stunning buildings are replicas of the West Gate, the Commanding Officer's house and a barrack block. It’s normally closed through the

winter, but go at half-term time and Arbeia Roman Fort, as it is known, will be open on two weekends – 18/19 and 25/26 February. The town is noted for its many fish and chip shops and ethnic restaurants, particularly along the Ocean Road down to the beach. The Ocean Beach funfair reopens in February, but it’s obviously weather dependent. The charming little steam train, known as the Lakeshore Railroad, which goes round the lake near the beach, might also be operating, as subject to weather and mechanical failure they offer rides from 1130 to dusk at weekends, and during half term week. On your way back from South Shields, you might like to drop in to the Barbour factory shop which is adjacent to Bede Metro station. With this ticket you can break your journey as often as you want. If you have never ridden the Tyne and Wear Metro you could ride every route in one day, but I think in February I would prefer to wander the art gallery and museum and then find a good book to dip into at The Word. The Consett Monster

We’ll be bringing you regular film reviews in Fast Forward Format

A monster lived atop the hill revered by all round, and every day men fed it well with minerals from the ground. Each man worked hard and in return, the monster would disgorge, the contents of its bowels which men could sell or use to forge.

Consett Magazine teams up with Lonely Tree Productions

For many years the beast and man shared bounty from the ground, and families grew, and young men knew, their future here was sound. and even though the monster caused a stain upon the land, the stains would pass unnoticed when it meant cash in your hand.

Local YouTubers and Filmmakers; Steven, Annie, and Jack will be working hard to review some of their most loved and most loathed films in the new video series. We are delighted to have the opportunity to share these awesome reviews exclusively with Consett and Durham Magazine's readers. The videos will be in fast forward format, meaning they will be delivered in short, snappy, and straight to the point video reviews. The 'Star' unit of measurement to rate a film has been replaced by the humble "Consett Brick" in the new video series. Don't ask, just watch the videos You'll get it then.

The town grew strong and prospered and the men were joined by more, who also learned to feed the monsters bowels as they poured. Across the land the people heard of what these men could do and orders came from far and wide to buy the monsters brew. Yet some times man would lose respect and feel the monster's bite and sometimes man would come off worse and sometimes lose his life. But deaths were few and all men knew the price they had to pay if homage wasn't paid unto the monster every day. And on and on o'er many years the monster shared its life, until one day a message came which caused the men great strife. Some faceless fools from lands afar decreed the monster's death, "he'll feed no more for monsters overseas will eat far less." So men in tears, whom through the years, had tended to the beast must watch in awe, the monsters fall, and imports from the East. And now it's gone except a few sad objects sat in grime, like trophies from a monster slain, long dead before its time. Well nearly 40 years have passed, how fares this fruitful land? Did the future give them worthwhile work or abandoned idle hands. Alas I see though hard they tried, no monsters are in sight, no graft for men to raise their brood no end of tunnel light

Some of the film reviews the team will be producing include: "The Shining", "Chupcaburba Territory", "Bourne Legacy", and "The Departed". We'll be posting a new “Fast Forward Film Review” from Lonely Tree Productions every week on consettmagazine.com, Facebook, and via Twitter. The first review is “The Shining” in Fast Forward format, you’ll be able to watch this video consettmagazine.com or visit our facebook every Sunday to see the latest in this fun new video series. If you’ve got a great idea for a video, story, photograph, or even a podcast you’re looking to share; get in touch with Consett Magazine to get involved. We just love to hear what people in the Consett community are up to.

Abandoned by the powers that be and paid for by the state once proud men sit idly by, and curse their sorry fate and in their twilight years think back to Consett as it was but when asked why the monsters gone, they shrug and say, "Because"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

By Neil Sullivan

EBCHESTER

S! HOOLIGAN

A local football club has received a timely birthday present to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Blackhill and Ebchester Football Club were presented with a new kit by Consett based HR consultancy Mark David HR at their new home at Consett Academy. Rossi and jack never ever stop...

THAT is until I put their paralysing jackets on!

HAHA! HAHA! HAHA! HAHA!

The club play in the Durham Alliance Combination League on a Saturday afternoon at the excellent 4G facilities at Consett Academy. Manager Ken Parkin and Chairman Tim Brown have been in their roles for over 12 and 35 years respectively and their dedication impressed Rob Grinter of Mark David HR who’s son Mark was managed by Ken many years ago. “Without people like Ken many young people would not get a chance to play local football. A lot of local teams have folded due to a lack of people willing to give up their time to coach players so I am pleased to be able to support Ken and Tim who have given their time to this Club for so many years”. Ken Parkin said “We really appreciate the support of Mark David HR as this new kit will help us celebrate our 50th year in style. We hope to be here in another 50 years” New players are always welcome and anyone who is interested in helping in any capacity should email ebchesterfc@outlook.com or pop along to Blackhill Comrades Club on a Saturday afternoon to meet Ken and the players.

Rabbit Vaccinations In the UK, it is recommended that rabbits are vaccinated against myxomatosis and viral haemmorhagic disease. Myxomatosis can be passed from wild rabbits to pets by fleas and mosquitoes and causes severe swelling of the skin around the eyes, ears and genitals which is often fatal. Viral haemmorhagic disease is always fatal and often causes sudden death, most commonly in outdoor rabbits. A new strain of this disease has recently been identified that can also affect indoor rabbits as it can be transferred on clothing and on the coats and feet of dogs and cats who are going outdoors and coming into contact with infected wild rabbits. Both these diseases can be prevented with six monthly to yearly injections so please contact your vet to book an appointment and make sure your bunny is protected.

Counterfeit Youth It is always great to have new artists/bands sent my way, even more when it’s a band local to your own town, Counterfeit Youth are a new upcoming sound to the North East. Starting with the basics, Counterfeit Youth are a five piece alternative/punk band with lead vocals from Adam Pull, lead and rhythm guitar from Robert Owens and Andrew Brown, bass from Jack Martin and Drums from Andrew McAskell. Now this is a cover band, and I know what you’re thinking ‘you don’t usually write about cover bands’ which you’re right I don’t, not unless they’re something special like Fallen or Slipknowt. I have faith in this band hitting the ‘special’ standard we are looking for, mainly as they are working on original music, having sampled their song demo ‘There She Goes’ I am impressed with what I am hearing, the vocalist has a massive dare I say pop-punk vibe to him. He smashed his cover of The Middle by Jimmy Eat World at their gig at Gateshead (the video can be found on their facebook page). You can catch Counterfeit Youth soon! Playing The Cluny at Newcastle on January 20th!
