July 2016 - Editorial

Good day to you Consett! As we write this editorial, we have just found out that the UK will leave the European Union. It’s fair to say that we now have an unknown future ahead of us, but that’s fine because it’s the uncertainty of the future that’ll make changes to our Country. Let’s just hope that these changes are positive for us here in Consett and throughout the North East. Many of us decided to leave the EU without a clear vision for the future, and many of us wanted to stay with the status quo. All that exists now is the UK as a sovereign nation, soon to be outside of the EU.

We really hope that the decision makers here in the UK will look to the North East and continue to help us to grow both economically and socially way into the future. The European Union has been good to us here the North East, just look around and see how many projects and businesses which have been supported by the EU’s Regional Development Fund. We’ll see if this continues under a United Kingdom separate of the EU. Well, that’s enough politics for today, we hope you and everyone here in Consett continues to “gan canny” and enjoys their Summer to the absolute limit. Also remember to check out all of the local businesses who advertise in the Consett magazine, without them we’d be unable to produce this free magazine for you every month. All the best, The Consett Magazine Team

Dry Day in Consett - By Brian Harrison

DRY DAY IN CONSETT

www.consettmagazine.com

From the inception of the heavy industry in Consett there have always been factions and oppositions to each. The industry brought with it a string of men from all over who worked hard but also played hard too. The public houses and inns sprung up quickly to accommodate a need and also to make lots of profit. However, this was not the town which had been envisaged by the Derwent Iron Companies founders. They wanted to make the town a bustling town full of life and also family friendly. They wanted to create a longevity to the workforce so education and religion was seen as a must. The churches were built and schools erected as well as good housing and soon the families began to arrive. However, with many towns of the time drunkenness had become a major problem within the area. This situation was not helped by the need for healthy drinking water,

which would not come until the late 1860's, so beer was the staple drink of the area's inhabitants. By the early 1860's a new movement took hold in Consett promoting Temperance toward the “Demon Drink. Lots of Temperance halls and movements sprung up around the area, much to the dismay of the local bar owners. Methodism was also on the rise and saw a major influx, especially within the small mining communities. Methodists and the newly opened Baptist Churches at Blackhill and Consett gave an even bigger boost to the Temperance movement and soon they became a force to be reckoned with. Initially the Temperance movement were against spirits, beer being the staple drink for most people. It was only later that they began to preach the evils of all forms of alcohol. Their work was hard and sometimes thankless but they also believed in the

protection of women against abuse from drunkards, openly calling for these men to be arrested and proceedings being brought against them. The Victorian earlier era was not good for women, men having all the rights. Beatings were often seen at that time as the women's own fault.

The movement marched, preached, lectured and at times even invaded the drinking establishments of the town, under the watchful eye of the local Constabulary. In a newspaper article of the 1890's the movement boasted 90% of Consett to have signed the pledge. One of the best known groups was the Blackhill faction of the Sons of Temperance. Even well into the 1900's they were known for furthering the cause and would journey town to town and village to village. The members of the group were also became known as the Blackhill Rough Diamonds.

Sew & Sew- By Lorraine Weightman

the weekend, I enjoyed the warm July sun on my shoulders, wishing the time away so I could get home and get on with my sewing!

Now, not only was I a proficient dressmaker but a dab hand at making mince and dumplings, leek pudding and jam roll poly.

All my sewing and knitting friends advised me that it was much cheaper to be in fashion when you could create.

Saturday couldn't come too soon, but I still had work while my friends were window shopping, meeting at the bottom of the market and eating ice cream from Dimambros's, trickled with monkeys blood! I wasn't surprised to find, they had not only finished and pressed their tops but had even made matching skirts and bought paleface tights at 'The Wool Centre' to finish off the look.

They boasted of 'Fairisle', 'Cable' and 'Aran' sweaters, while declaring the benefits of tailors chalk, tacking and the embroidery foot on an electric sewing machine. With the 'A' level exams over and a long summer holiday ahead, we were advised to go along to the dole office next to Yager's to sign on and look for holiday work. To my surprise, I was offered a job, and even though it was less money than the benefit, I accepted the post as kitchen assistant at the bus canteen in Front Street, close to The Freemasons. I found out later that my friends had been offered it too, but gracefully refused; content with picking up their giros on Thursdays.

The pattern had been used five times before I got it, so when it came to pinning it to the polka dot polyester it started to disintegrate. However with my feet on my Mother's treadle machine I set to, extremely proud of my achievement. What I didn't realise was, that although I had chosen Style C, I was following the instructions for Style B and couldn't work out how the pieces joined. Undeterred by this minor hiccup, I sewed on relentlessly all week after finishing my shifts at the canteen.

I worked until 5.30pm on Saturdays so arranged to meet at the Trades for 7pm. They were going to keep seats at 6 o'clock as we wanted to be at the front so we could get up and dance easily. Sure enough it was busy and we were all crammed round a table wearing our new tops. I kept my bomber jacket on as I'd immediately realised that mine was slightly different from the others. It was only when I got too hot dancing to 'The Hunter', that my faux pas was revealed. Not everyone can carry off a halter neck top with the bust darts at the back!

www.consettmagazine.com

Turning up for work I was promptly given a sack of potatoes and a white tin bucket. Sitting on a three legged stool in the back yard, knee deep in peelings, I was reminded that lunches started at eleven thirty, and the corned beef pie still had to go in the oven. Day dreaming of

Determined not to be outdone I chipped in for a 'Butterick Wrap and Go Halter Top' pattern. After choosing material from MacDonalds we planned to wear our creations on Saturday at the Trades, as a band called Brass Alley were playing.

CONSETT CHURCHES DETACHED YOUTH PROJECT

AWARDED FOR WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

ON THE STREETS

The Consett Churches Detached Youth project has received a top award for their work with young people on the streets in the town and surrounding villages. Groups of dedicated workers reach out to challenging and marginalised young people – to improve their quality of life and build a brighter future. The young people they help are usually found hanging around parks, streets and bus shelters, as they have nowhere else to meet up. They are offered diverse learning opportunities in a safe and friendly environment with a team of professional youth workers who listen to their needs, help them face their fears and address their issues.

www.consettmagazine.com

Through informal workshops, they are offered new skills, all aimed at raising self–esteem, physical and emotional wellbeing as well as building a positive future. Alcohol awareness and binge drinking are issues that are addressed and the youngsters are encouraged to take part in a range of activities to alleviate boredom and prevent anti-social behaviour. “Getting this award is a real surprise. It means we will be able extend our summer programme for summer activities.”

Yager’s Butchers on Victoria Road in Consett had been in the Yager family for 145 years. The butchers shop was started by a German immigrant from Prussia in 1870. Traditionally a pork butcher, it is one of the most well known

businesses in the Consett area. David Yager is the great, great grandson of Charles Frederick Yager who first started the business. Last month, David

and the Yager family placed a sign in the shop window wishing the new management all the best for the future with the Yagers business.

Everyone at Consett Magazine and in the wider Consett community would like to wish Lee and family all the best in future.

Lee said, “We’ll continue to use the Yager’s name and will aim to serve the Consett community with a wide range of quality produce including new protein packs for gym goers”. Lee has also confirmed, Yagers will continue to do the famous pork specials, so that’s my lunch sorted today.

This long standing family business has now changed hands and has been taken over by Lee Grant & family. Lee is a local lad, well liked, and very talented butcher.

Now that we are finally getting some nice weather please remember not to leave your dog in a hot car. Even if you open a window the vehicle will get extremely hot, surprisingly quickly - even if it is only 22 degrees outside the car will get to 47 degrees in a short time. As the dog pants to cool down the humidity in the car rises quickly which makes it even more difficult for the dog to further cool down, and they very quickly develop heatstroke. This is an emergency and needs treating quickly take your dog to the nearest vet as soon as possible. But, like many things in life, prevention is better than cure. http://princebishopvets.co.uk/client-advice/
