1866 Strikes and Opening - By Brian Harrison

Your Free June 2017 Consett Magazine

1866 STRIKES AND OPENING In Spring /Summer of 1866 Consett Iron Works, along with many other Iron Traders across the North East of England, found themselves at the hands of the newly formed trade unions. Acting in response to announced pay cuts, of between 10 and 60%, the unions took the men out on strike. It was a truly united front by the workers who had finally found a voice against the employers. A major factor in the struggle was the then newly formed Amalgamated Malleable Ironworkers of Great Britain, a 6500 member strong union, mostly from the North East.

www.consettmagazine.com

It was a hard time for the families in our area. With the men out of work no money was coming in, there was a lack of food and bills began to build up. The newspapers reported almost daily, speculating on the outcome. The Iron Traders were also feeling the pinch as the furnaces lay idle out and their orders were unfulfilled. The summer months came and went without any movement from either side. The people of the area rallied as they always did, neighbour helping neighbour with what little they could.

A small respite in the form of a local celebration came on the 28th August with the official laying of the foundation stone of St Ives Church, Leadgate. The newspaper covering the story stated: “Although at present, in consequence of the strike in the Iron Trade, some hundreds -nay some thousands – of ironworkers in the neighbourhood are off work, yet a stranger to Leadgate on Tuesday would have failed to recognise any such depression in the demeanour in the hundreds of spectators and participators – all of whom must, more or less, be interested indirectly with the strike – in the joyous ceremonial witnessed on the Redwell Hills” Consett Iron Works were not the worst for the reduction in pay, more the 10% reduction, when at the end of September, after almost 4 months without pay, 100 puddler's marched to the Iron Company offices and signed to return at the reduced rate on Thursday 27th. The bosses sent out a bellman notifying that anyone wanting to return could do so and they would be expected first thing on the Friday

morning. The strike for the Consett Steelworkers was over, although the it continued for many others well into the December. Unfortunately for all, when it did end, it was to end in defeat.

However, it was not a full loss. It brought about the formation of the Board of Arbitration and Conciliation for North of England, set up by David Dale, later to become Sir David Dale. This board enabled both workers and employers to come together to sort out their differences, with an impartial intermediate. Also this rise in unionism made the movement even stronger, even though the initial outcome was not a good one. There was now a need for the trade unions to be given legal recognition. The Liberal government in 1871 started this, but with lots of initial legal restraints and binds. It was Disraeli, who in 1875, was the one to truly free the trade unions from the burdens of which the new legal status had been surrounded, allowing the unions once and for all to legally give a voice to the working man.

There was talk of a roller disco at Coasters in Tollcross but we decided we wouldn't be doing anyone any favours by whizzing around the tracks to 'Highway to Hell' and 'My Sharona', so we decided on a trip to Tiffanys or the Astoria to enjoy some live music.

loss of Keith Moon - but we knew we would still have the best time doing our thing!

I'd put my name down for a weekend trip to Edinburgh with the girls. Edie Batey did all the hard work organising it, so all we had to do was turn up outside the Braes for the bus on the Friday evening. There was a real mix of ages, so everyone's agenda was different . Most people were looking forward to a walk along the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace and the Castle.

My intuition was right, as the next morning I woke up to an ocean of frizz covering a scorched scalp. With no time to repair the damage I headed for Boots the chemist in Middle Street for some extra strong conditioner and setting lotion, believing that would do the trick. No matter, the weekend beckoned and all my friends politely commented on my new hairstyle so life was good. We chatted excitedly throughout the journey sharing our egg and tomato sandwiches, Yager's pork dips and Tudor crisps; washed down with Pomagne and Lambrini chasers.

On arrival the plan was to drop our bags off at the B&B, get changed, then go straight out. Being the youngest on the trip we were given the top floor attic room that slept eight, with four sets of bunk beds crammed into the tiny space and a cracked sink in the corner that qualified it as an en - suite in the brochure! Immediately everyone's clothes and belongings got mixed up as we tried to manoeuvre our way round the minuscule room in single file. As I attempted to rake through my hair with an Afro comb, one of my friends decided it would look much better with hairspray on and picking up a can from the pile of toiletries on the floor she proceeded to atomise my whole head! I was quite pleased with the effect at first, yet minutes later she broke into hysterical laughter while reading from the front of the can. ' Scotchguard Water Repellent Shoe Protector! ' I should have brought a hat!

www.consettmagazine.com

We consoled ourselves that we didn't have tickets for The Who's comeback concert at the Odeon theatre on Saturday - after the untimely

To mark the occasion I'd had another curly perm, but while in the hairdressers I'd had a sneaking suspicion that the chatty lass doing my hair wasn't really concentrating, I guessed she was being very heavy handed with the perm solution when my head felt very hot and started to sting.

Places to Go: Gravesend, Kent

Your Consett Magazine YourFree FreeJune May 2017 / June 2017 Durham Magazine

When I wrote two months ago about Letchworth Garden City as an alternative to London hotels, I felt I should also mention another town with good quality accommodation and a view of the River Thames. Midweek rooms in London of good quality start around £180, even in a Premier Inn. But I had an excellent suite of three rooms to myself, overlooking the river, for £120 including a good breakfast, and only 22 minutes by High Speed 1 train from St. Pancras (which is right next door to Kings Cross). If I was looking for a family break close to London but without the capital’s prices, I would seriously consider Gravesend. Don’t let the name put you off. It’s where the river opens out into an estuary, with Tilbury over the other side of the river by ferry, with its interesting Tudor fort which has been used to defend the river until WW2. It was at Tilbury Fort that Queen Elizabeth, in 1588, rallied her troops against the Spanish Armada with the words “I know I have the body of a weak, feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too!” As well as visiting London itself, there are interesting places such as Rochester and Chatham Dockyard nearby, and shopping centres like

Lakeside (on the north side) and Bluewater (on the south side) for those interested in that kind of thing. Don’t neglect the attractions of Gravesend itself though. The Guru Nanak Gurdwara is one of the largest Sikh temples in Europe and welcomes visitors – indeed all seekers after truth - particularly at weekends. It’s a short walk from the town centre, but best to avoid all tobacco and alcohol on the way. The Clock Tower is famous locally, and has just been restored fully at a cost substantially more than the £679.20 it cost in 1887 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The information panels state that the Tower is modelled on the lantern spire of Newcastle Cathedral, which was built in 1448. I did not know Newcastle Cathedral was that ancient, but having checked subsequently that is indeed true. My second visit to Gravesend this year saw me staying at the Clarendon Royal Hotel, which is on the riverside, a couple of hundred yards from the Port of London Authority Control Centre. Staff there monitor and direct all shipping on the Thames. Close by is the large New Tavern Fort which is now part of a large park, and was interesting to wander around in. There are lots of ancient pubs in the older quarter of the town, including the Three Daws which is a pub

SWEAT, GRIT & TEARS I met charlie 7 years ago, she was that girl we all know, the gorgeous one who's really nice and has everything going for her yet full of insecurity. She was so self-conscious, always so quiet, she'd even have a meltdown getting ready for nights out bursting into tears because she hated her reflection so much. Together we tried every diet and exercise fad going, she tried so hard but for some reason never got the results the rest of her friends did. It was clear she wasn't one of the lucky ones and her body was determined to cling to its shape.

www.consettmagazine.com

Strangely, I think the thing that gave her the self-belief to make the changes she wanted so badly were made in her work life not personal. I think her confidence started to grow when she started her own photography business. Suddenly she was seeing what she was capable of and building something amazing for herself and her son Kaidyn. This kick started something in her, it proved to her she could be whatever she wanted to be. She got serious in the gym, no messing around with random classes and just

when she could. She made it a priority to get to the gym every day, she started counting macros. No guess diets or vague ideas. She educated herself in exactly what she needed to do and she did it. It's now a week till charlie steps on stage as a figure competitor. The girl who couldn't bring her son to my son's pool party because the idea of letting people see her in a swimsuit filled her with dread is going to get on a stage in a bikini and be judged on the body she's built through sheer determination. I'm so proud of the person she's become, she's an amazing mother setting an excellent example for son, she's running her own business and handling it, well, like a boss! She's taken every piece of insecurity and negativity, every knock and every setback and smashed through it to be this strong, beautiful courageous woman who wants to prove to every girl out there that they can be whatever they want to be and achieve their dreams. We, her friends and family are so extremely proud of her. And we cannot wait to see what she can achieve in the further. Written by Kelli.

SIXTH FORM RECOGNISED NATIONALLY FOR SIXTH FORM ACADEMIC PROGRESS

In March Consett Academy was presented with the prestigious Academic Progress Award in London at the Learning Plus UK Awards Ceremony. Each year Learning Plus UK, give a limited number of awards to schools and colleges. The awards recognise best practice by Post-16 providers and the support given to young people to improve their learning outcomes. Out of over 600 centres, Consett Academy was one of only five, nationally, who won an Academic Progress Award. This award recognises the progress students make in A’ level subjects at Post-16, based on the outcomes of those students who completed their Key Stage 5 study in summer 2016. Due to these outstanding results, not only has Consett Academy come top in the Government performance tables for County Durham, it is also in the top 4% of schools nationally for A’ level achievement. Mr Reynolds, Executive Principal, Consett Academy said, “This award recognises the hard work and success of our A’ level students and the dedication of their teachers and the whole Sixth Form team.”

Microchipping

In April 2016 it became compulsory by law for all dogs over the age of 8 weeks old to be microchipped. It is an owner (or breeders) responsibility to ensure their dog is microchipped and that the contact details held by the microchip company are up to date. If an owner or breeder does not comply with the law, they can face criminal prosecution and a £500 fine. A microchip is approximately the size of a grain of rice and is implanted into the skin at the back of the neck. It holds a unique number that can be picked up by a scanner when it is run over the dog’s body to enable vets, dog wardens and charities to reunite lost or stolen dogs with their owners. Your vet will be able to microchip your pet, but this can also be done at many rehoming centres, charities and some pet shops providing the implanter has undergone the appropriate training.

Durham County Council is backing the national Love Your Market campaign, which runs until the end of this month. Organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities, the initiative aims to promote and support market traders around the country. The county council licences markets around County Durham: •

Bishop Auckland, marketplace – Thursday and Saturday, from 8am to 5pm

Chester-le-Street, marketplace – Tuesday, Friday and Saturday , from 8am to 5.30pm

Consett, Middle Street – Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 8am to 4pm

Crook, marketplace – Tuesday and Saturday, from 8am to 5pm

Stanley, Front Street – Thursday and Saturday from 8am to 4pm

As well as promoting the locations, days of times of the county’s street markets, the council is also encouraging retailers, entrepreneurs and producers to consider running their own stall. The authority’s Revitalising Street Markets initiative, which is currently running as a pilot project in Chester-le-Street and Stanley, offers a 50 per cent financial contribution towards the cost of equipment including a stall and sheeting and the insurances needed in order to trade. Existing market traders can also take advantage of the same level of financial support when purchasing a new stall or equipment. Jackie Donnelly, Durham County Council’s community economic development team leader, said: “Markets provide a low-risk, low-cost opportunity for business start-ups, entrepreneurs and online businesses to market-test their products. “For shoppers, they offer a range of products they can’t find on the high street and, in some cases, the chance to buy direct from the producer.” For more information about Love Your Market and Revitalising Street Markets email CED@durham.gov.uk
