A Most Horrid Way To Go - By Brian Harrison
Your Free March 2017 Consett Magazine
A MOST HORRID WAY TO GO A while a go I started putting together a number of small articles I had found in the old newspapers relating to the area. Most are on the more macabre side or I just found strangely interesting. The following is a brief account of one such story I found recounted in a number of papers and other local documents as well as some further research.
www.consettmagazine.com
Jonathan Garbutt was a farmer at The Allotment, Waskerley a secluded small holding a few miles from Consett where he lived with his wife Jane. He was born in 1820 in Wolsingham and prior to farming had been a labourer and also a lead miner at near by Dene Howle. Dene Howle was an ancient mine with its origins stretching back into the medieval. It was also once famed for supplying the majority of the silver for the silver pennies minted at Durham between 1066AD to 1377AD.
Jonathan was by all accounts an industrious man with a good sized family and had worked hard his whole life. However, some time after 1881 he was struck by a terrible affliction and became gravely ill. His body began to decay at a rapid rate and the poor man was said to have been in terrible agony. Unfortunately for his wife Jane, the terrible stench of his decaying flesh emanating from their home was so strong that no one else would come near, leaving her to deal with the whole unfortunate event on her own. Toward the end of his illness Jonathan's legs had became so rotten that they were almost coming away from his body. A few days prior to his death he was said to have ripped flesh from his own legs and finding a pair of shears had then proceeded to cut away further lumps and discard them into the fire. He passed away at the end of
September 1884 finally at peace. For his poor wife Jane however, the horror persisted. The parish authorities denied her a coffin in which to bury him and just threw his body into the grave “as if he had been a heathen living in a foreign state. The people of the area were disgusted at this treatment and demand an inquest. However, when the Lanchester Guardians who governed the area met to discuss the matter the main objection to be brought up was not of Jonathan and Jane's treatment but of the stench which still remained. A letter was drafted by the Clerk to Dr Bolton, the Union medical officer, bringing him to task over his lack of forethought and for not supplying a quantity of Carbolic acid to help negate the smell in the locality of the Garbutt's home.

Brian Stobbs, a member of the Rotary Club of Consett will be riding over 300 miles in 3 days to raise ÂŁ3,000 for Willow Burn. Last year Brian's mother in law was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and decided to opt for no invasive treatment just palliative care.
www.consettmagazine.com
In August she went into WillowBurn Hospice and here the family kept a four week almost constant vigil. Kathryn and Brian and Kathryn's brother Ian and his wife Glo were bowled over by the quality of compassionate care Jean was given. After Jean passed away in September the collection plate was given along with the family's donation. Brian after signing up as a volunteer came up with the idea of raising a significant
amount of money, which he planned to do alone but with the approval and administrative support of Rotary. He is looking for and has secured donations from local business' to sponsor his shirt. The response has been good and the following have pledged their support to date: Forster's, Thackery's, McGuigans, MacSecurity, A.D.Scott, Relmans, Gralands, Hi Style and Ford Castle. On Tuesday 25th April Brian will begin his 100 miles a day bike ride from Consett to Sunderland and after dipping his wheels in the North Sea, travel from Sunderland to Consett then on to Penrith where he will stay the night. On Wednesday he hopes to meet up with Penrith Rotarians then ride to Keswick over Whinlatter Pass down to Whitehaven and back to Penrith.
On the third day he is planning to make it back to Consett Golf Club for 6 o' clock, just in time for the Rotary meeting! The total raised will be shared between WillowBurn and Rotary's, End Polio Now campaign. A Just Giving page is to be set up shortly where donations will be gratefully received.
a mention. The fact that he travelled all the way to Bethlehem; was there at the birth of Jesus, had the responsibility of taking the son of God and Mary to Egypt to protect them; then, on returning to Nazareth spent the rest of his days in the carpenter's shop looking after everybody is extremely commendable. However like many people he stayed in the background.
This year Lent begins on March 1st. Ash Wednesday is the first day of forty preparing for Easter and is meant to be a time of fasting, repentance and reflection.
Always the protector, the helper and always waiting in the wings to pick up the pieces he reminds me of my family, and how as a child and young adult I was unaware of their constant care, sacrifices and the little things they did to make my life easier. I remember one year when Lent was almost over and the Easter holidays had begun, being tempted to go to the pub on Good Friday instead of church at 3pm. Predictably after a couple of halves in The Braes, The Brit and one in The Turf I couldn't go straight home so one of my friends invited us all back to her
On my return, much later, from Botto's, I carefully opened the unlocked door, saw a light in the kitchen and simmering on the stove was a tin plate of yellow fish, mash and peas beside an almost boiled kettle. My pyjamas were warming by the fire and a place was set at the table. Uncle Michael had peeled the potatoes and veg ready for tomorrow and Uncle Pat had filled the coal. As I tucked into my food, I heard my Auntie Rose's familiar voice from upstairs, 'Did you have good Friday?!' Now, as I celebrate my past, I realise how lucky I was to have them, as they were all saints!
www.consettmagazine.com
On the first of March my mother always said white rabbits. When I questioned why, she shrugged, saying she didn't know, but it was supposed to be lucky. Which got me thinking about how much we don't know and how much we take for granted? March always reminds me of St Patrick's Day and on March 17th celebrations have taken off all over the world as folk remember their roots and celebrate their past. But, while in Consett we celebrated St Patrick with shamrock, ceilidhs, singing, dancing and dressing up, St Joseph, who's feast day is two days later doesn't get much of
My paternal grandparents must have had a secret love for Joseph as they gave his name to three of their sons. Curiously he was always second. Patrick Joseph, Michael Joseph, and my Dad, Bernard Joseph. Joseph, who is the patron saint of workers, expectant mothers, the home, and a happy death, really has his work cut out!
house. The only problem was she lived four doors down from my Auntie Rose, Uncle Pat and Uncle Michael. On reflection it would have made sense to walk down the back street but at the time it seemed perfectly feasible to commando crawl underneath the front windows so I couldn't be seen. Underestimating their wisdom and intelligence, I spent the afternoon playing charades and drinking beer while waiting for the pubs to reopen. In my defence, I did abstain from my friend's spaghetti bolognese!

Chester-le-Track, as well as being a leading retailer of domestic rail tickets, is also a member of AERA which is the Association of European Rail Agents. Every year, AERA members have an excursion by train into Europe, and for 2016 we went to Aachen by Eurostar to Brussels and onwards on the Deutsche Bahn ICE train to Aachen, which is an important stop on the route to Cologne (KÖln). Aachen, also known as Aix-la-Chapelle, is a spa and border city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Aachen was the preferred residence of Charlemagne c.742 – 814, and, from 936 to 1531, the place where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned Kings of the Germans. Charlemagne was the first of the Holy Roman Emperors, and is buried in the Cathedral which was (like Durham) declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
www.durhammagazine.co.uk www.consettmagazine.com
Aachen is the westernmost city in Germany, located near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands: the tripoint is just west of the city. Aachen’s industries include science, engineering and information technology. In ww2, Aachen was the first German city to be captured by the Allies, and its residents welcomed the soldiers as liberators. The city was destroyed partially – and in
some parts completely – during the fighting, mostly by American artillery fire and demolitions carried out by the Waffen-SS defenders. Damaged buildings included many medieval churches, although Aachen Cathedral was largely unscathed. Only 4,000 inhabitants remained in the city; the rest had followed evacuation orders. Its first Allied-appointed mayor, Franz Oppenhoff, was assassinated by an SS commando unit, for daring to start the post-war reconstruction of his city whilst other parts of Germany were still fighting the Allies. But let’s not mention the war. We had a walk around the old town, visiting the Rathaus (City Hall) and the ancient Cathedral which is a Roman Catholic church. The Christmas markets were well under way with an intoxicating mix of goodies which as a practising diabetic were strictly off limits. When the Eurostar service to Paris and Brussels started in 1994 out of Waterloo, it had to use crowded suburban lines south of London. Since 2007, the Eurostar has run from St. Pancras via HS1, right next door to King’s Cross where the trains from the north-east come in. At one time is was envisaged there would be through trains into Europe from cities like Newcastle, and indeed there was for many years a train path at 09.57 from Newcastle into
Waterloo. But it makes more sense to use any train via London, giving multiple journey opportunities instead of just one direct train a day. Eurostar is now carrying more passengers to Paris and Brussels than all the competing airlines added together. 68 UK stations (not including Chester-le-Street) have through fares, and Eurostar has extended its tentacles to Lyons, Marseilles and beyond, plus the leisure services to ski resorts and Disneyland. Our partner in European and other foreign rail travel is Rail Tour Guide, a small business based in Pink Lane, Newcastle, just opposite Central Station. David Glover and his team are also AERA members and we refer business in both directions. Aachen in a day is perfectly doable (but expensive) if you stay overnight in London beforehand, but it’s better to stay in Aachen for two nights (or more) and see the City properly. Why not go now before Brexit makes a visit more complex? If going by Eurostar, always ask for a CIV ticket to London International rather than the normal London Terminals ticket. It’s cheaper, and under international rules you can travel on the next train out if you have been delayed. www.railtourguide.com 0191 246 0708 www.aachen-tourist.de

I taught myself everything I know to date by reading up online, watching YouTube videos and from this I played around while working behind the bar experimenting with flavours adding creations as weekly specials seeing what people thought of each drink I experimented with. Dental Disease
Mr Mixologist officially launched in November 2014 the 30th to be exact. Way before that Mr Mixologist was just little old Dan working in a bar serving treble vodkas and a can of Barr pop in pubs in Consett. Over the course of the 2 – 3 years I gradually worked more days and ended up doing a lot of promotions with the manages of a pub, a bar and a night club building up great bar experience and getting to know the nightlife of Consett! Whilst working in a busy bar on Front Street, I ended up creating cocktails... yes cocktails on Front Street (Who’d of thought it?) Now they weren’t anything special, but it gave me the base of making and shaking some delicious cocktails.
Up to 80% of dogs over the age of three have active dental disease so it is a really important issue in veterinary medicine. Dental disease in dogs is different to that seen in people (who most often get tooth decay) because the biggest problem we see is inflammation and infection in the tissues surrounding the teeth (also known as periodontal disease). Periodontal disease occurs due to accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth which causes gum recession and pocketing where the tooth meets the gum. This infection and inflammation can spread deeper into the tooth socket causing teeth to become painful and loose and even resulting in tooth root abscesses. Dental disease is entirely preventable with daily brushing using a special canine toothpaste but if your dog already has a build up of tartar, your vet may recommend a scale and polish under general anaesthesia. Many vet practices will offer free of charge dental checks for your pets, so if you’ve noticed your pet has smelly breath, discoloured teeth or pain when they are eating, book them an appointment to get checked out as soon as possible. http://princebishopvets.co.uk/client-advice/
What is Happening in 2017? Mr Mixologist is expanding on some of the popular services, with a new and exciting package available, Afternoon Cocktails; a selection of miniature cocktails served up in the style of Afternoon Tea. Quirky Watermelon Iced Tea and Apple Pie served in a Jar it’s the perfect way to celebrate baby showers, an Afternoon get together and even a sophisticated 16th Birthday (alcohol free of course!). Mixtails are also looking to be the next big thing in 2017, from 500ml freshly shaken bottled cocktails to 50ml miniature wedding and party favours, an upgrade to the usual sugared almonds. I’m also working alongside the community and will be donating to charitable causes and I’m excited to say that I will be working with Willoburn Hospice on some exciting projects including Win Your Happily Ever After Competition to win a wedding, where I will be donating a Hen Party and a discount toward wedding favours for the final prize. If all goes to plan you could see Mr Mixologist at local festivals and fairs over the summer, where you can grab yourself some fun cocktails such as the Sweet Shop Daiquiri!
