LEGENDS AND HISTORIES OF THE DERWENT - THE SNEEP TO THE CROOKED OAK
Your Free November 2017 Consett Magazine
There have been numerous legends of the River Derwent dating back into time immemorial. The Sneep, a well known and loved part of the river, holds one such legend. From as early as the 1170's came the folklore tale of “Arthur's Cave”. The tale goes that not far from the Sneep lies a vast cavern where it is said that King Arthur and his knights rest in eternal slumber awaiting the day when our Country is in its greatest need. On that day they will awaken and ride forth in our defence. Not far from the Sneep is the farm house known as the Crooked Oak which is situated
in one of the most beautiful spots in the Derwent Valley. Built in the 17th Century it was said to be the home of Jane Frizzle who was reputed to be a notorious witch. Her crimes where said to have been using witchcraft on men, maidens and cattle. The more likely crime was being a little odd and probably knowledge of herbal remedies. No one knows exactly when Jane was born or died but she is believed to be buried in the corner of a field at Greenhead. The Crooked Oak itself was built, or possibly rebuilt in 1684. A date which is engraved above the door along with the
letters T.I.R. The letters probably relate to Thomas Richardson who's family owned the farm till the mid 1750's.
In the lush pastures situated above the Crooked Oak there are also legends of numerous battles, many involving the Pict's and Scot's and also during the times of the Northumbrian Kings. It is said that the blood that spilt during those tragic times is what gave rise the fertility of the land in and around that area. Verses from the “Ode to the River Derwent” by John Carr written in c1800 By Brian Harrison
For a story they stir up the fire, Till vanquish’d and silenc’d by sleep; No vale like their own they admire— Not a lake in the land like the Sneep There Derwent reluctantly leaves A scene so delightfully rare, And winds his fond arms, and receives Each wave in the wonder to share. King Arthur’s round table is near, Though none has declar’d how it came; He lifts up his head once a year, The sceptre long lost to reclaim.
www.consettmagazine.com
Ghosts and witches come in for a share, Though poor Frizzle has long breath’d her last, On broomstick who rode in the air, And scatter’d her pins as she past.

It was only as young adult when I was at a Bonfire Night party with my friends in Blackhill Club and the Scotch
Those in the group who had not attended our school or church were bamboozled by the whole conversation and were unsure whether to believe us or not, laughing along nervously as we recounted even more fanciful stories. A friend's grandma swore a cure for tonsillitis was to place a sock full of hot potatoes around the sufferer’s throat. While our favourite of the night was - to obtain really good luck and forgiveness you must toss your shoes in the air on the way home after a night out. When the party finished, as always, we were looking for somewhere else to go and the only place open late was Botto’s. The disc jockey had themed his record choice to suit the occasion and we danced to, Rocket Man, Disco Inferno and Great Balls of Fire. As always
the heavy spot included Smoke on the Water!
One of our more mischievous friends was seen sitting downstairs in the chip butty room, and using the napkins from the front of the counter, he tore them into strips and placed them carefully into a plastic pint glass. Too busy upstairs dancing to Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Ring of Fire we didn't question his actions. It was only later when I was waiting to be served drinks at the bar in The Tudor Room that I noticed one of my friends had dropped some stuff out of her purse. There, on the floor lay a pile of shredded napkins with P I written on each one. While I tried to explain the joke and tell her she'd purchased plenary indulgences, she insisted that she was staying until the raffle was drawn at the end of the night as she'd bought £5.00 worth!
We threw our shoes in the air on the way home, just to be on the safe side.
www.consettmagazine.com
At school we were taught that November 1st is All Saints Day, a day when we remember and pray for all of those who have died and attained Heaven. As far as I understood, the following day - All Souls Day - remembers those who have died but are still waiting to get in, needing a little help from us to shorten their time in purgatory. As well as praying for the Holy Souls - as we did in November - some older people were able to fast track the journey to Heaven by obtaining plenary indulgences. This involved saying special prayers and doing specific things that were beyond my childish comprehension. As a child, all this information mixed together in my mind with stories of Guy Fawkes, Bonfire Night, baking jacket potatoes on shovels, the clocks going back and crunching crackling leaves underfoot, while searching for conkers around horse chestnut trees.
Arms that we started a discussion about what we knew, or what we had been told. Someone said that the Infant of Prague could control the weather and brides placed a statue of him outside their door so the sun would shine on their big day. Another proclaimed his grandfather told him it's possible to tame a young wild horse by whispering the Creed into his left ear on Wednesday and into his right ear on Friday. As the night wore on the tales became more incredible as beliefs, faith, facts, superstitions, tall tales and fiction blended into one.

Places to Go: Newark On Trent On the day before my recent visit to Newark, the Daily Express was warning of England receiving the tail end of the American hurricanes with winds of 70mph. As it turned out, it was rather a pleasant Sunday, and there was much more rain on the walk back to the car at Durham station than all day in Newark-on-Trent.
www.consettmagazine.com www.durhammagazine.co.uk
I left Durham at 0938 on a direct Virgin Trains East Coast service to London, calling at Newark Northgate station at 1117. Many people on leaving the station turn right to walk along Northgate to the town centre. It’s quicker, though, to turn left on to Appleton Gate and enter the town past the Palace Theatre. Newark was built at the crossing of the Great North Road and the Fosse Way, two Roman routes which are now the A1 and the A46. When the railways arrived, two routes again emerged: the north-south East Coast Main Line calling at Newark Northgate and the east-west Nottingham to Lincoln line calling at Newark Castle. There is no rail service between the two stations, and the lines cross at the same level on one of the few flat-bed crossings left on the mainline network. Boat trips are availabe on the River Trent. I first visited Newark Castle
itself, the ruins of which are in an attractive park opened to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 70th birthday on 24th May 1889. There was an interesting exhibition in the North West Tower of the Castle about bad King John, who suffered dysentery after a major feast in King’s Lynn and losing his treasures when crossing the Wash. He died in the room above the Gatehouse at Newark Castle on 18th October 1216 to be succeeded by his nine year old son, Henry III, who made a much better fist of being King than he had. Time for lunch then and I chose the Danube restaurant, two excellent courses for £15 opposite the Registry Office on Castlegate, before poking round the Newark Antiques Centre and the shops which were mostly open on the Sunday. After a coffee I moved to the National Civil War Centre which incorporates the town museum. A Royalist town which suffered three sieges and a good dose of bubonic plague, Newark was a strategically important town for the King, and the exhibits were much more interesting than suggested by some tripadvisor reviews. The small cinema played some specially filmed sequences about the Civil War and characters from Newark who had a role in it (look up the story of Hercules
Clay), and there was the pleasure of seeing plaques later in the same streets featured in the film. There was also a continuing exhibition about T. E. “Lawrence of Arabia”. I wish I had allocated more time before closing at 1700. Evensong was a joy at 1800 in the Parish Church with the combined choirs of Newark and Grantham, followed by a tasty pizza on the Castle Barge, Newark’s floating pub. Go any day you want to Newark, but I am suggesting especially Sunday 26th November 2017 when a big fireworks display celebrates the turning on of the Christmas lights. On the way home, my intended 2048 train from Newark direct to Durham (2235) was cancelled so I had to take a following Leeds service to Leeds and transfer on to a TransPennine Express train which arrived at Durham at 2237, which meant I was 62 minutes late and able to claim a full refund on my ticket under the Delay Repay arrangements. No quibble, 100% refund of the £28.60 paid By Alex Nelson alexnelson@dunelm.org.uk nationalcivilwarcentre.com

Fireworks
Firework season is approaching so to keep your pets calm and safe throughout, we recommend you follow these guidelines: 1) Keep dogs on a lead when out on walks to avoid them being spooked by loud noises and running away 2) Keep cats and dogs indoors if possible and give them somewhere to hide. 3) If you know your pet is scared of fireworks, plan to visit your vet at least 6 weeks before bonfire night to discuss medication options, as this will allow enough time for certain medications to build up to an effective level 4) Visit the ‘Sounds Scary’ page on the Dogs Trust website. Start playing the noises at a low level in the background and reward good behaviour, building up the volume of the noises over a period of 4-6 weeks to ensure they are associated with something positive (e.g. treats or toys)
