So on Monday 1st May 1865 it was agreed...

MBenfieldside split Shotley Bridge had always been a well established village, with its fine houses, spar and hotels. It had been attracting people to the area since the 1830's to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Derwent Valley. It also had its own industry in its paper and wheat mills. But as the Paper mill expanded and the Iron Works in nearby Consett sprung to life the area soon grew into a bustling township. So to combat any social problems and nuisances the establishment of the area, consisting of the Doctors, local Gentry and other professional people set up the Benfieldside Nuisance and Removal Committee in early 1860's. With all governing groups of that time they were very much an elitist but with true conviction. The role of the committee was to ensure that standards were met, enforcing alcohol licences, public house opening and closing hours, ensuring good public behaviour and even sewerage. It was soon noted by the committee that certain areas were not up to their initial standards and that a line would have to be made. After several discussions over several months it was

decided that the township should be split into two. So on Monday 1st May 1865 it was agreed that everything below the Highgate, Cutlers Hall and Shotley Bridge would become one district and everything above that would now be another. However both areas would still be under the parish of Benfieldside. At the same time as this was happening another argument had been brewing between the Postal Authority and the people of Benfieldside. Shotley Bridge had no problems having been in existence for many years but the newly formed township above had initially given itself the name Benfieldside, like its parish. However the postal authorities had other idea's and labelled it Blackhill. Many of the local businessmen argued the point that the Post master at Gateshead had for sometime delivered their mail with the postal address of Benfieldside, Gateshead without any problems and to change to Blackhill would only confuse people.

By Brian Harrison

In a letter to the Consett Guardian dated 9th September 1867, William Barkas, Chairman of the Benfieldside Nuisance & Removal Committee, wrote of the committees disdain for the postal address Blackhill, quoting the similar situation that Consett had had some years earlier with the postal service and its insistence that Consett be called Berry Edge. However the people of Consett rallied and the name was reverted to the name by which it was known by the people of the area. Unfortunately unlike Consett's victory the people of the Benfieldside area lost and the official name became Blackhill. With that the Urban District Councils of Blackhill and Shotley Bridge were born, lasting well into the 1900's.

The Lindisfarne Story comes to Consett RlINDISFARNE

sTORY

The Lindisfarne Story comes to Consett I was lucky enough to have tickets to see Ray Laidlaw and Billy Mitchell tell the story of Lindisfarne on Lindisfarne at St Mary's Church, on the last day of Holy Island's Festival in June. The atmosphere in the packed church was congenial as islanders and tourists alike shared the experience of a lifetime. Ray and Billy entertained with a unique mixture of chat, familiar classic songs, music and stories, complimented with photographs, video archive and personal reminiscences spanning Tyneside's favourite band's career. Brilliant memories of their early music were evoked as the story

unfolded and the audience sang along in unison, enjoying every minute. I have vivid memories of the early days when I was sixteen of listening, dancing and singing my heart out to 'Lady Eleanor','Clear White Light' and 'We Can Swing Together'. Now at nearly sixty years of age my renditions are slightly more subdued but just as enjoyable.

I can honestly say I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I would highly recommend anyone who enjoys music and a great night out to see this show at Consett Empire on Saturday 31st October 2015.

Ray and Billy engaged with their audience, inviting a relaxed comfortable atmosphere in the beautiful ancient parish church. 'Meet me on the Corner' and 'Fog on the Tyne' rang out among the rafters as we were led into a fantastic moving finale which left me in tears. All too soon it was over but the guys were happy to sign the CD's they had on sale and pose for photographs.

Soft Pastry had already been prepared

Blackberry

WEEK

by Lorraine Weightman It was a real event the half term holiday. Lazy long summer days had turned into crisp sparkling October mornings and shorter nights. Most evenings the fire was lit, yet some afternoons hung on to a hint of warmth and the sun shone shyly. The main focus of the week was on blackberrying and the anticipation of 'Ducky Apple Night' later in the month. On the first Monday of the holiday armed with bowls and bags we walked to Knitsley, as from past experience the hedgerows there produced the biggest, best, and most juicy blackberries in the area. It was a race against time as everyone was on the same mission, so only the chosen few were given the nod to where the most bountiful harvest could be found. My Dad and Uncle Michael were the best at knowing and they led the way, showing us how to pick them carefully between thumb and forefinger without squashing the plump ripe fruit. It was difficult to negotiate the rough prickly stems as they caught on your clothing and stabbed at your fingers, but it was all worth it; as in just two hours our bags were bursting with fruit and the bowls were filled to the brim. A cheer went up on our return and the mountain of blackberries were washed in salted water in the kitchen sink to get rid of the green stalks and the miniature worms. Soft pastry had already been prepared and the tin plate pie dishes greased in anticipation of what was to come. Nearly the whole street had been promised one and had put their orders in earlier in the day. I watched closely as the skilled hands of my Mam and Auntie Rose rolled and fitted the pastry to the plates loading in smooth half cooked apples while tumbling in the berries before sealing the edges and making a pretty pattern with a fork. After the egg wash I was allowed to sprinkle caster sugar over them before they went in the oven. It was a labour of love and the two cooks only stopped for a cup of tea when the last pie was out, resting on the windowsill.

It was mine and my brother's job to deliver the delicious works of art to our extended family and neighbours. The easiest way was to place the warm pie into a clean towel and knot the top to make a handle; so you could carry two at a time. There were many smiling faces as we slid in through the open doors and placed the pies on kitchen tables.; the sweet smell of Birds custard bubbling gently on every stove in anticipation. I ran home to collect my final two deliveries and saw my Uncle Pat strolling back from the Demi and waved. In the balmy kitchen there were two pies left. One for Auntie Becca who lived in the next street and Auntie Lily. As I wrapped them both in tea towels the phone was ringing in the hall. Placing the pies carefully on the chair I answered the call. Auntie Lily was not at home and said she would collect hers later. With one last swinging pie I ran all the way excited for my teatime treat when I was finished. The raised voices ringing out on my return home stopped me in my tracks and I gingerly slipped in through the kitchen door. There was Uncle Pat leaning over the sink with a blackberry and apple pie stuck firmly to the back of his trousers while everyone else fell about with laughter. 'A pie's the last thing you expect to find on a chair', he grinned as he placed the squashed item on the table. The dark red juice seeped into the white tea towel preparing me for what was to come. Auntie Lily's pie was squashed beyond recognition. The beautiful crisp sugary pastry a crumpled cracked mess next to ours. 'Wrap the good one up for Lily when she comes', rang in my ears. 'We'll just have to salvage what we can from the other', my Mam said as she handed me the tea towel. 'Do you want custard with yours?'

Hello from A D Scott Asbestos and Think asbestos Ltd, we are a Durham based Asbestos Consultancy offering accredited asbestos surveys, sampling and inspection and Licensed asbestos removal. Being one of only approximately 380 companies in the UK who currently hold a license to deal with asbestos we are vetted directly by the Health and Safety Executive under what is a very strict vetting process: This is because Asbestos is the second most legislated area of work in the UK and is second only to the Nuclear industry, and not without reason: There is more ill health and deaths in the UK as a result of exposure to asbestos than in any other work related area. AskN

Vet

By Dr Jacqui Molyneux Prince Bishop Veterinary Hospital Does my dog really need boosters very year? Dogs are routinely vaccinated against 4 diseases distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis. Recent research has shown us that dogs need boosters every 3 years against the first 3 diseases but leptospirosis needs boosting every year. So the short answer is yes, dogs do need boosting every year, but not against all diseases. The clinical examination done at the time of a booster is also very important as, just as with us, the earlier a lot of diseases are found the more likely it is to be able to cure the dog.
