CONSETT SPORT CENTRE 1975-2015 By Brian Harrison

Since the launch of the new multi million pound Leisure Centre and Academy in Consett which opened back in July 2015, the change to the area has been quite significant. The project cost £44m and was carried out by the contractors Carillion to bring a state-of-the-art leisure and education facility to the town. The facilities are great but they have definitely added to a serious congestion problem during the School opening and closing times making Medomsley Road almost grind to a stand still. The old Baths and Sports Centre are no more, both being raised to the ground for the sake of progress. However, like the old Baths, the old sport centre held great memories for many. 5 a Side

leagues, badminton, trampolines, squash, indoor bowling, archery and so much more. It was a place people went to keep fit socialise or even hold their wedding receptions. When first planned it was hoped that Consett Sport Hall would fill a long felt need in the area, especially for the younger residents. The initial ground breaking took place in 1974 after the Ashdale Road site had been allocated. The plans accommodated a main hall of 120ft by 105ft, 2 separate gymnasiums, 4 Lane indoor bowling green, 4 squash courts, weights room, Committee and Club rooms, Bar & Shop, Shower and changing rooms and also a Spectators gallery.

The doors opened on Saturday 24th May 1975 to great expectations and appreciation and the popularity of the place was instant. Membership was £2.20 Adults, £1.50 Junior, 50p OAP and £4.40 Family (children under 16). Hiring of the facilities ranged from 20p an hour for Table Tennis to £1 an hour for the large hall, half that for juniors. If only hire prices were the same today. So for almost 30 years we had the pleasure of a great facility; the images, smells and experiences of which now will forever be shelved within the memories of all those who walked through its doors.

One of my friends who was great with money - thanks to her banking career - spent hours cutting the labels from Persil boxes to obtain free train tickets. As we were always on the look out for a bargain laced with adventure, this was the perfect way to explore.

After ‘Mother Kelly's Doorstep’ it was my turn. The only song I knew by heart, apart from ‘Faith of our Fathers’ was ‘Dear Old Donegal’ so I attempted that.

Music!’ the dance floor was treated to ‘Morning’ by Grieg from The Peer Gynt Suite which I'd used in my creative dance lesson earlier that day. Disgruntled students are not a pretty sight and we were ushered out immediately. Undeterred, and positive about Saturday night we had a lazy shopping day and prepared for the evening. Dressed to the nines - me in my gold dress with black stilettos and my friend in a royal blue mini with scarlet high heels - we boarded the bus into the city.

SAME OLD SONG Same Old Song - By Lorraine Weightman

Surprisingly it went down well and I was given tokens for the Juke Box.

We’d booked a weekend in Manchester as my friend’s brother had invited us and we were told to dress up for Saturday. Sorting through the old trunk I'd bought at Consett Sale Rooms; I came across a gold lamé sparkly dress. I'd acquired it from my mother's Catholic Women's League Concert Party days. It seemed the perfect outfit for the occasion! Teaming it with my only pair of high heels I packed them in the red tartan suitcase borrowed from my Auntie Rose.

Manchester was busy and I was lucky enough to have a man in a trilby carry my suitcase along the platform while my friend struggled with hers! We headed straight for the Library Theatre where her brother worked. It was full of students and had a late night disco. I'm not sure if it was the excitement of travelling, tiredness, or the miniatures of creme de menthe we'd had on the train, but I decided to change the music in the tape machine. Thinking I had the Doobie Brothers in my handbag I pressed ‘play’ gleefully waiting for the nods of recognition and gratitude. However instead of ‘Whoa Listen To The

Thinking we were headed for a hedonistic nightclub with disco balls and a revolving dance floor, we were surprised when he stopped at an old dated pub - with a shamrock over the door and a piano in the corner next to the toilets then ordered 3 pints of Boddingtons! The locals were swaying to the singer’s rendition of ‘Dirty Old Town’ and they nudged along to give us seats. Within minutes the heels were off and we were clinking glasses, sharing stories, and being asked if we could sing! I returned triumphantly to my seat with three pint tokens and a sprinkling of applause!

www.consettmagazine.com

With loads of time to spare before the late train we met up in ‘The Park’ at the top of the bank; as Friday was sing along night. A lovely lady played the piano in the corner next to the toilets and in the days before karaoke you had to know the words to get up and sing!

During the interval, we danced on a tiny carpeted area to ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ by Lou Reed and played air guitar to Aerosmith’s ‘Walk This Way’. Reluctant to leave we hurried to catch the Durham bus to the train station.

Places to Go: Haltwhistle

Heritage open days (7-10 sept 2017) is a national movement to open the doors to a wide variety of heritage buildings. At the time of writing, the regular booklets and websites that confirm which places are open to public view were not available, but the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership have suggested to me that we should promote Haltwhistle, which has at least one site participating in the scheme. The Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership is opening the Old Booking Hall on Haltwhistle Railway Station on Friday and Saturday of that weekend (8th and 9th). There may even be a small pop up craft fair in the Old Booking Hall during those two days. This building was built in 1855 and retains its wooden ‘booking office wall’ complete with ticket racks which will be filled with reproduction Edmondson Tickets.

www.consettmagazine.com www.durhammagazine.co.uk

Edmondson tickets were the standard ticket of the railways in Britain almost from their inception until the advent of the early computerised ticket machines in the 1970s. The system was invented by Thomas Edmondson who was stationmaster at Brampton station, west of Haltwhistle, on the Newcastle to Carlisle line.

Chester-le-Track also has a connection with the Haltwhistle Old booking Hall, since there were plans years ago for Tynedale District Council to open up the office for ticket sales. The unsigned draft contract was presented to me in 1999 as a basis for negotiation with the then railway operator, Northern Spirit. It’s the grounding for our trading today at both Chester-le-Street and Eaglescliffe.

This interesting Northumberland town, claims to be the Centre of Britain, as the signpost shows. I think this debate has now been settled but they like to be challenged about their centrality because then they can roll out the maps which prove Haltwhistle is in the middle of England, Scotland and Wales. There will be informal railway walks running during the two days, looking at Alston arches and other remains of the Alston branch line, which closed in 1976. Haltwhistle water tower is still in existence and it is hoped that this too will be open for visitors to see. Bringing the railway offer bang up to date, the Virgin Azuma roadshow will be pulling into town too! That’s a van, not the actual new trains which have been

built at Newton Aycliffe, and can now be seen testing on the East Coast Main Line.

Being in the area of the Border Reivers, when attacks on the town were common before the union of crowns in 1603, and even thereafter, the greatest number of Bastles (defensible houses) on the English side of the border are here. The trail to find them is detailed in the “turbulent past” leaflet. Take a walk too up the Haltwhistle burn, once the industrial hub of the town. The parish church, Holy Cross, is 13th century, with Roman stones and much more. It houses an old water stoup which may have been used as a font. Children of all ages will enjoy Mr George’s Time Museum in the main street (free, donations welcome) I am informed that there are some great places to eat in the town, and if early September is still warm and sunny, the three outdoor pools of the Haltwhistle Open Air Swimming pool are particularly invigorating. Cheap day returns are available to Haltwhistle, but there are no Northern Rail advance purchase tickets as yet. Remember you can break your journey as often as you like to visit other towns on the

By Christina Stubbins Prince Bishop Veterinary Hospital

Hyperthyroidism in Cats Hyperthyroidism is a common hormonal condition of middle ages and older cats which is caused by an overproduction of thyroid hormone in the body. The most common signs are weight loss, a ravenous appetite, an increase in drinking and urinating, hyperactivity and an unkempt coat. A hyperthyroid cat may have a high heart rate, an abnormal heart rhythm and/or a high blood pressure which can all cause disease in other organs in the body (e.g. the kidneys) so it is important the condition is diagnosed and treated as early as possible. A simple blood test can usually diagnose hyperthyroidism and it can be easily treated with medication, surgery or radioactive iodine therapy. The signs of hyperthyroidism can often be put down to a cat 'getting old' but treating the disease will often dramatically improve a cats quality of life so if your cat is showing any of these signs, book an appointment to see your vet.

Chunkcast 54.8 - September 2017

SO again, Chunkcast 54.8 has been mad busy, lots going on!! My dream of having Consett’s’ very own Radio Station is slowly getting closer and what better way than broadcast 3 times weekly on an Internationally re-known Internet Radio Station www.northukradio.com. The Bosses at the station have kindly allowed me to fill a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night spot. 7-9pm with The Paul Owen Hunter Show, and ‘The Late Show’ 9-11pm on a Wednesday, why not download the free App on Google Play or Apple Store and listen in on a early week night.

Purpose A name to be decided by the people of Derwentside in a Poll I shall create, when I have fully founded the possibility of a Local Radio Station. This Station will be based in ‘The Heart of Consett’ and literally be ran by the people, for the people, eventually standing on its own as a viable company.

Advertorials combine the benefits of traditional print ads with feature written articles. A feature story allows more details about your company to be included in your advertising campaign. This means you can thoroughly explain the benefits or tell an effective story.

Format A featured story about your business is especially copy-driven, however you may choose to use visual images and photographs. You can write your advertorial yourself or we’ll have one of our copywriters to help you.

And in the Meantime, Chunkcast 54.8 will continue with interesting podcasts addressing a mixed bag of important topics, illuminating taboos and showcasing the great people of Consett, giving them the Air-time they deserve. Get in touch with your thoughts. Chunk Out.

Just give us a call on 01207 438 292 to book your space, we’re ready to get started.
