This story begins with Jacob telling his tale of love and danger in circa 1932 when the country was reeling from the Great Depression. Jacob is an elderly man who requires nursing care, and everything he hears or smells take him back in time to the circus, which basically adopts him. Orphaned at 23, Jacob hops a train and lands right in the middle of a second rate circus. His story is filled with all that this circus has to offer. Its name says it all: “The Flying Squadron of the Benzini Brother’s Most Spectacular Show on Earth.” The more Jacob learns the about the circus the more disgusted he becomes. The pitfalls of manipulations by the carnies and their efforts to get more money out of the public, rankles him. But the circus, like the nation, is barely clinging to life during a time when few had anything to spare. It is through his narration that Jacob

tells of his saga of love and danger. Along with this menagerie come people from all walks of life who work under the big top and those who do not. You will be drawn into the drama of the causeways, which burst with amusing portrayals of the sideshows, and the drama of the center ring where Jacob and the love of his life, Marlene, find themselves spotlighted by those around them. Water for Elephants floats along like a big top in the breeze, from supreme to magnificent. No child ever forgets his first trip to the circus, but it is the undercurrent that makes this book so intriguing. The book’s atmosphere is courageous and persuasive. As a veterinarian, Jacob was immediately placed in charge of the animal’s safekeeping. When jobs were so difficult to find, he finds more than he can almost handle. But, he is a kind man with an

affinity to animals. Rosie is one of the show’s elephants and will not allow anyone to work with her. Yet, Jacob finds the key to her heart. And just as he makes his discovery about Rosie’s key, Jacob finds himself pining away for another woman — Marlena, and she is the celebrated diva of the equestrians. Recently married, Marlena is unobtainable. Or is she? Marlena’s husband, August, is a proud, unyielding man who is extremely jealous and controlling when it comes to his wife. Yet, it’s Jacob who experiences this husband’s wrath over and over. Jacob knows the situation will eventually escalate into violence, and he tries to ward off trouble. He’s not afraid for himself, but for Marlena. Water for Elephants is the winner of the 2007 Book Browse Diamond Award for the Most Popular Book Read — an honor that was well-deserved.

their voices and their own rhythms and martial arts. But the root of it is contemporary dance. We’ll also see live music, reggae, some drumming and some vocals. I’ve asked a barber shop choir to perform and a church with live vocalist and these girls and boys that do the most amazing Mexican folk dances. Dave Garfrerick, the owner (of Garfrerick’s Cafe) donated the space generously for the workshop and performance. Our capacity is 76, and I think it’s going to sell out. E: So what is next for freddyJet? RW: The space we’re moving into is unbelievable. It’s the skeleton of an old foundry on Front Street, where Old Oxford meets Old Anniston. There are six buildings. I want to start with a performance dance studio and then move into the other buildings. Maybe have a yoga center, a coffee shop. Make it like an artist community. We will start in the fall with ballet, modern dance, choreography, hip-hop, yoga and Pilates. And we’ll have an easy-spirited class for the older crowd that’s a combination of dance, Pilates and stretch. Dancing is not for one specific age group or body type. Everybody can move. That’s the most important thing to me, that it’s available to whoever wants to do it.

‘Wings of Opportunity’ Author to speak on Wright Brothers’ school in Montgomery By Erin Williams Special to The Star

The Wright Brothers, the aviation pioneers who hail from Dayton, Ohio and flew their first plane in Kitty Hawk, N.C., actually came down a little further South than one might think — all the way to Montgomery. In 1910, while waiting out the completion of their new assembly line of planes in Dayton, not to mention the fact that the weather was unfavorable during the winter, the Wright Brothers set out to find a location that had better weather and was available to instruct civilians how to fly their new planes, so they could teach others. The flying school, opened for one semester, that resulted, and the impression it made on the state, is chronicled in the book Wings of Opportunity: The Wright Brothers in Montgomery, Alabama, by journalism professor Julie Hedgpeth Williams. Williams actually stumbled upon the fact that the Wright Brothers even graced the state when she was reading a book about the brothers and saw that a caption for a picture of them, revealed that they were in Montgomery. “I had no idea,” says Williams. “I was just blown away.” Williams began researching their stay, and turned what she thought could be an essay into her book. She turned to newspaper articles that the Montgomery Advertiser and the now-defunct Birmingham PostHerald published, and was able to piece together their time in the state, which was just one semester through the spring of 1910. Williams discovered that Wilbur Wright had scouted out several places to start their southern-adjacent school, including Atlanta and Augusta, before being pointed in the direction of Alabama. At the time, the South was anxious to move forward from its unruly past in the Civil War, and there was a rumor that the Army was going to open a base, the first major base since the Civil War, in the South. The Chamber of Commerce in the city had already brought representatives of the military down to piece together ideas to bring the base there, and were advised to be extremely prepared when the time came, including helping to find land for the base and

According to Williams, the city took those ideas and transferred them to Wilbur Wright’s needs, and a flight school was born, and included five students who were taught by Orville Wright, Wilbur’s younger brother and partner. “There was a big idea that the South was really poised for development, and Montgomery wanted to take advantage of that,” says Williams. “These guys in Montgomery were ready. They wanted his business and they were ready to do it.” The brothers were seeking to enhance man’s knowledge of flying planes, and during their time in Montgomery realized that anyone who had an interest in learning how fly generally could learn, which was great, considering that at the time planes were seen as forms of entertainment, yet the only other representatives in the country who knew how to fly them were three military men in San Antonio. The

flight students also flew the first night flights in history over Montgomery, eventually leaving for Indianapolis upon the end of school, en route for a flying competition. Once spring came, the brothers chose to close their school in Montgomery due to the fact that there weren’t enough students to have two schools open, but declared to always “look favorably on Montgomery,” says Williams. Later, the land where the Wrights’ school had been was bought by the United States and turned into the grounds for Maxwell Air Force Base. The school’s presence and the fact that curriculum was dedicated to something so new and fresh, did a lot to aide in bringing the South — and the nation — into the future. “Aviation had no past,” says Williams. “It’s not part of the Confederate past — it has its own track to follow.” Williams says the response to both her book and the fact that the Wrights opened a school in Alabama has been surprise and shock by those who were unaware of the news. “Most people [say], ‘Gosh, I had no idea, I just didn’t know,’” says Williams. Distinctly diverse crowd After Vans Warped Tour takes dive, founder shoulders resurrection By Glenn Gamboa Newsday

NEW YORK — At the end of last year’s Vans Warped Tour, founder Kevin Lyman was a little worried. He felt the traveling extravaganza he created in 1995 to showcase new talent, heavyweights from outside the mainstream, and the indie-rock lifestyle was starting to lose its way. “Last year, it felt a little fractured at times,” Lyman says, calling from a tour stop in Buffalo. “Some acts weren’t really involved or engaged.” As a result of the economy and some touring issues, attendance dropped sharply last year and Lyman says he decided to address the slide himself. “I realized that it’s harder — I’m 50 now — and I thought that maybe I started listening to too many other people,” he says. “I remember Ice-T told me, ‘You gotta go with your gut’ and that’s what I decided to do.” Lyman decided to choose all the artists himself, taking two months to listen to hundreds of acts and pulling together Warped Tour’s most diverse lineup in years — from the chart-topping, pop-leaning hip-hop of 3OH!3 and Gym Class Heroes to the power pop of Paramore and A Day to Remember to the political punk of Against Me! and the hardcore of The Devil Wears Prada. “We really focused on diversity this year,” he says. “I think we’re closer to the mix that we had in ’95 with Sublime and No Doubt and Quicksand than we have been in years.” Lyman says the change has worked, with attendance back up to 2009 levels. But the switch did mean that some more traditionalsounding Warped Tour bands did not make the cut this year in the name of getting some different styles onto the tour. That strategy helped Bellmore-based The Narrative, who released their eponymous dreamy pop debut themselves last year, land a slot on the tour. Singer-keyboardist Suzie Zeldin said the band was surprised to be selected and even more surprised that Lyman chose them to play on his personal showcase, The Kevin Says stage. “I don’t know that we sound like what most people think are Warped Tour bands,” Zeldin says. “But it feels amazing to be picked by him. It’s such a great opportunity.” Lyman says he enjoyed their music, which isn’t as heavy as most bands on the bill, but he liked their appreciation of the opportunity

And that is what makes the tour so rewarding, says Terrible Things front man Fred Mascherino. “I really do have to mentally prepare for it,” says Mascherino, who has done Warped four times before as part of Terrible Things, Taking Back Sunday and The Color Fred. “It’s the toughest tour on earth to do — the drives, the heat, the stress. ... Warped Tour has built up a trust with its audience. Even though the kids may say, ‘I don’t know half of these bands,’ they still trust that it’s gonna be a fun show.” Fuse VJ Allison Hagendorf, who traveled with the tour for its first 10 days to interview artists and fans for her weekly series “Fuse Warped Wednesdays,” said most bands come ready for the mix of fun and business. “It is like punk rock summer camp,” she says. “There’s no headliner, no egos. The catering lines are for everyone. There’s no VIP area. All bands are created equal. ... They also understand that it’s an important platform to reach 600,000 kids in the summer, that it’s the biggest traveling tour and that a lot of major names have come from the tour.” For every Warped Tour band, the day starts

before 8 a.m., when they find out their set time for the day and learn how much time they have to set up their equipment and merchandise tents. The workday generally continues until after 8 p.m., when bands pack up their stuff and drive off to the next tour stop to start the cycle again. “You have to work hard in this business,” Lyman says. “It’s like a microcosm of the industry. Nothing is ever going to be handed to you. Those bands that had a sense of entitlement, that thought they didn’t have to work hard, they aren’t really around any more. The bands that have been rolling around forever? The survivors? Those are the ones that work hard.” Because of Warped Tour’s success, it’s not just bands that put in the effort, but businesses and nonprofit organizations looking to reach the same demographic. And, for Lyman, these are kids he cares for. He has always tried to keep the tour’s ticket prices down and this year he has moved to offer free water to concertgoers, as well as a $3 price cap for bottled water. “I want them to feel like they are part of something,” said Lyman. “This tour stands for something. A mother came up to me at a show the other day and thanked me for the tour because her daughter told her, ‘This is the one place that I belong.’ That’s why we do this.”

With more than 100 bands playing at each Vans Warped Tour stop, deciding who to check out gets tough. Based on her time out on the tour, here are some of Fuse VJ Allison Hagendorf’s suggestions to add to your list: BAD RABBITS: “I have no idea how to categorize them — kind of discofunk-soul-rock with a D.I.Y. attitude,” Hagendorf says of the Boston-based band. MOVING MOUNTAINS: “I love Sunny Day Real Estate and you hear them and a little Jimmy Eat World, but you also hear a little bit of The Cure,” she says of the Westchester band. “It’s very melodic, moody, with pretty strong songwriting.” YELAWOLF: “I’m a huge fan,” she says of the Gadsden rapper who mixes Dirty South hip-hop with classic rock. “You don’t think Warped Tour and necessarily think Yelawolf. ... But then again Eminem did the Warped Tour in ‘99.”

NEW YORK — After 20 years, Boyz II Men haven’t reached the end of the road in their music career. In fact, the group is preparing to celebrate their milestone anniversary this fall with a new album, including reworked versions of their classic hits. “Nothing too extreme or dramatic, but we’ve added a few things here and there,” says Shawn Stockman of their upcoming project. Boyz II Men brought their Motown-Philly harmonies to the masses when they made their debut with “Cooleyhighharmony” in 1991; propelled by hits like “End of the Road” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” the Philadelphiabased group’s first album sold more than 9 million copies.Their sophomore CD, “II,” sold 12 million copies. Stockman says the group

— which originally included Wanya Morris, Nathan Morris and Michael McCary — had no idea how huge their achievements were. “We were so busy just working ... we didn’t think too much about how it would impact the world, which is probably a good thing, because it kept us sharp and kept us focused, even to this present day,” he said. “Looking back, it’s a great thing. It’s hard to talk about it because it’s something that we think it’s a great milestone in our careers, but we’re still hungry, and we still feel like we have so much more to contribute, musically and otherwise.” The group — which became a trio after McCary left — still records and performs regularly. ‘Captain America’ lives up to the hype By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

There is so much “business” that the fourth big comic book movie adaptation of the summer has to take care of that, frankly, it’s astounding that director Joe “Jumanji” Johnston is able to take care of it all, and with style. Captain America has to connect this World War II-era hero to modern times. The movie has to tie into all the other Marvel comic book movies that are part of The Avengers, because as the title implies, the good captain is “The First Avenger.” It has to deliver the origin myth — how Captain America was born out of a “super soldier” experiment during WWII. The film has to back-engineer its way into the meeting between the Captain (Chris Evans) and the Avenger leader we know as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and give us a credible version of future Iron Man Tony Stark’s inventor dad, Howard Stark. And it has to be fun. It is. The fourth comic book movie of the summer is the best comic book movie of the summer. Johnston has delivered a light, clever and deftly balanced adventure picture with real lump-in-the-throat nostalgia, with Nazis — who make the best villains — and with loving references to Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The movie’s first trick was turning hunky Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) into what the ads in the back of comic books used to call “a 98 pound weakling.” They digitally “Benjamin Button” the guy into Steve Rogers, scrawny shrimp. But with World War II in full fury, Rogers is determined to serve his country, even if that country’s military rejects him as “4F,” unfit physically. He signs up for a special unit to be turned, thanks to a serum by Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci, in a kitschy accent), into super soldiers. “Zo, you vant to go overzees and fight ze Nazis?” Erskine picks Rogers because he keeps on fighting hopeless odds when he knows he’s right, and “He’s not a bully.” Rogers sticks up for the little guy.

America needs super soldiers because those pesky Nazis already have one. Johann Schmidt is played by that villain’s villain, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix). Schmidt’s Hydra organization is developing super weapons and other super soldiers. And Schmidt has his hands on the Norse god Odin’s legendary source of power. “And de fuhrer digs for trinkets in ze desert,” Schmidt smirks in contempt. It’s a good thing the only American super soldier is ready to chase him, because Indiana Jones doesn’t appear to be available, being in the desert, digging for trinkets. Rogers is treated with scorn by his commanding officer, played by the commanding (and funny) Tommy Lee Jones. Rogers is sent on publicity tours, given a silly costume and a red, white and blue shield. But a little interference by a British agent (Hayley Atwell), a little gadget-tinkering by Howard-father-of-Tony-Stark (Dominic Cooper) and a USO tour to the front lines means this Captain will soon show he mettle. Being the hero means the normally jokey Evans isn’t given much funny to say. But he brings a proper earnestness to the character. “There are men laying down their lives. I’ve got no right to do any less than them.” On the face of it, Captain America seems like the corniest, most dated of the Marvel superheroes to try and bring to the big screen. Fury and his Howling Commandos.” There’s a lot here for the fanboy in us all. It’s too long and it could do with a few more laughs. Why cast the swaggering Evans as the modest Captain America if you’re not going to let him put his quirky stamp on the character? But then, like Johnston and the movie around him, Evans has so much business and back story to carry that the real marvel of it all is how much fun it actually is.

DVD releases about men on a mission top this week’s new releases. Take Me Home Tonight: A college graduate (Topher Grace) pretends he has a successful job to impress the woman he’s loved since high school. Grace, who’s also executive producer, wanted to make a nostalgic look at the ‘80s — not another film jabbing the era of big hair, leg warmers and shoulder pads. The problem is the decade had so little going for it that if you don’t poke fun at it there’s little reason for the setting. The chemistry between Grace and Teresa Palmer is nice, but it’s not enough to balance an uninspired script, recycled characters and a waste of talent. Torchwood: The Complete Original UK Series: Now that Starz has launched its Torchwood series, it may be time to go back and watch the original. The BBC series about a

group that battles the weird is as fun as it is exciting. John Barrowman stars. Limitless, Grade D: A drug allows a man to use 100 percent of his brain instead of the normal 20 percent. Bradley Cooper, who looks like he’s doing a bad Jamie Kennedy impersonation in the opening scenes, plays writer Eddie Morra. Too bad that drug wasn’t given to screenwriter Leslie Dixon in adapting Alan Glynn’s novel. The movie might have had more than 20 percent of a plot. The potential of Limitless was just that. It fails. Under director Neil Burger’s disjointed direction and Cooper’s cold performance, the movie should be called Hapless. Cast chemistry lifts above average ‘Friends’ Movies are two-hour long relationships. Sometimes you start them knowing exactly what you’re getting. Other times they surprise you. Most of the time, however — and this is the case with Friends With Benefits — it’s a little of both. Friends With Benefits is about two attractive, Bobby Bozeman smart, otherwise successful people, played by Pop Justin Timberlake and Cultured Mila Kunis, both coming off breakups in Los Angeles and New York respectively. Kunis plays a corporate headhunter, Jamie, who has to lure Dylan (Timberlake) to New York to become the new art director at GQ magazine. They quickly become friends over their mutual hobby of being extremely witty. And still sore from their last breakups they decide to fulfill their carnal needs

I don’t know if you’ve heard from all the other Hollywood movies, but that doesn’t always work out. But guess what? They still end up together despite their flaws. Awww. But you expect that, and that’s fine. What really surprised me is the chemistry that Timberlake and Kunis have together. They really make this movie. Without them, this movie is just a cliché. It’s still cliché, but it’s a cliché with so much charisma and the aforementioned

chemistry that it’s impossible to dislike, similar to how director Will Gluck’s earlier effort Easy A was lifted up by Emma Stone. Gluck doesn’t break pace either, Friends With Benefits moves quickly and effortlessly. Where there isn’t that rapid fire banter, there is a stream of pop culture references. The movie only slows down to give some background on Dylan and Jamie’s families. Dylan and his sister have to deal with his father’s Alzheimer’s, leading to a nice moment with Dylan and his father (Richard Jenkins) in an airport restaurant. Jenkins brings a nice sober sense to the movie, which contrasts well with the rest of the film. Jamie’s mother (her father is unknown) is a hippie whose primary purpose in the movie is comic relief. However, when her mother, played by Patricia Clarkson, has to double as Jamie’s source of emotional damage, it falls flat and Jamie’s damage comes off as insincere, the way someone’s great-

est weakness is working too hard when they’re being interviewed. The rest of the supporting cast is great, mainly Woody Harrelson who plays the sports editor at GQ and is exactly what you would expect out of that position, a fratty man’s man all about chasing tail but very openly gay, and very funny. The whole movie is painted over with a tint of satire and self-awareness, the peak of which is a fake movie starring Jason Segel and Rashida Jones that provides more than a few laughs. However, everything the movie mocks, it ends up doing itself so it doesn’t come off as satirical. But the jokes feel too rough to be simple homage. What you end up with is a movie that is too self-aware that it’s just like all the other rom-coms out there. Which, not surprisingly, is true. But while it might not succeed in being as genre-busting as it tries to be, it is better than your average summer rom-com.

The pop-culture convention, which annually draws thousands of costumed fans to San Diego, begins Thursday, but the die-hards (and those with weekendlong passes) will get a peek at the colorful convention floor on Wednesday night. Hundreds of exhibitors and more than 130,000 guests are expected to pack the San Diego Convention Center for the sold out, four-day event. “The people who go through those doors, most of them are film fans and fans of pop culture, be it video games or movies or television shows, T-shirts or comic books, it’s all part of this big cultural stew,” says filmmaker Jon Favreau, who will premiere his latest flick, Cowboys & Aliens, at Comic-Con. “These are people who normally interact with one another through the Internet ... Then when you finally open it up to meeting in person, it just concentrates that experience.” The blogosphere is already abuzz about some of the offerings at this year’s Comic-Con, where Hollywood continues to command a headlining presence. Captain America will play in San Diego for a full day before its nationwide opening Friday, and star Chris Evans is set to introduce the earliest screening. Trio of locals shine in country music competition

Katie, a senior at The Donoho School, and Bryan, a senior at Oxford High School, have been participating in area concerts and competing in local contests to get their music heard

What sparked your interest in music? My mom and Brad Paisley. I started out singing in church with my mom. She’s the reason I sing. I had never really paid that much attention to country music until Brad Paisley came out with the song “I’m Still a Guy.” I was on my way home from a camping trip with my family one summer, riding along in the car and [the song] came on the radio, and I fell in love. Ever since then, I’ve been a country music fan. When did music become more than a hobby? Several months ago, when I sang our national anthem at Oxford High School for a basketball game. A video of my performance was posted on YouTube, and I got so much great feedback and interest that I decided it was time to go for it - all the way. One of my favorite quotes is from Joe Dirt: “Life’s a garden. Dig it.” What is your music like, and where have you played lately? My music is pure country. I’ve been busy practicing with my band the past few months, and took time out to compete in the Texaco Country Showdown recently. What have you recorded so far, and what do you plan to record next? I have recorded a single called “List of Things I Love” and have plans to be back in the studio soon to record several more songs that I’ve written, and will hopefully have them all out to radio by fall.

Where have you performed? A number of local churches, Oxford High School and Middle School, local sporting events, at an Anniston Army Depot event, the Texaco Country Showdown in Odenville, and (as of July 15) will be performing in the C Factor competition at the World Deer Expo at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center [July 16]. How do you balance your music with school and other obligations? “Music comes first” is my philosophy. What has been your most fun experience? I recently sang live on WTDR Thunder 92.7 out of Oxford. I sang a Brad Paisley song called “Then”. Have you met anyone famous yet? Not as of today. What are you planning to have happen next? [I] hope to release my songs to radio in the near future, do some collaborating with a couple of other artists, pick up more concert venues, and hit the big time — Nashville-bound. Do you have any advice for someone who is looking to have his music heard? Don’t take “no” for an answer. What is your music like? My music is all country, and it has a very smooth sound and is easy to listen to. I write all of my music from personal experience, and since I’m only 17, I can’t really write about things like “the love of my life” or “being left by the one I love.” But I strive to reach out to all age groups with the music that I write. It all has a fun sound. Music is my way to cope with things. It is a lot like a musical journal. For example, my song “Angel Friend” is about one of my best friends, Kayla Darby, who passed away from Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of childhood cancer. Kayla’s love for life has inspired

me to never give up, to have faith, and to reach for the stars. What sparked your interest in music? My interest in music started at the age of 2. I have never been shy in front of anyone and have always loved to get up in front of a large group of people. Both of my grandfathers played a huge role in my love for music. My Papaw played the guitar and sang along with me to Classic Country while my other grandfather, Papaw Billy, introduced me to Classic 50’s Rock. At age 14, over Thanksgiving holidays, my musical style changed. I announced to my parents that I was borrowing my Papaw’s guitar and that I would know how to play it before I returned to school. I learned to play the guitar and wrote my first song in the process. I have never returned my Papaw’s old Ovation guitar, and I still play with it to this day. It puts “a little extra love” into the music that I write.

Where have you played lately? I have recently played at the World Famous Rodeo Club in Dadeville, Ala. for the Texaco Country Showdown. I made a lot of contacts at that performance and actually gained several new fans. By age 14, I was asked to sing the National Anthem at a Birmingham Barron’s game after a friend’s mom had heard a tape of me singing. I have sung the National Anthem several times at Barron’s games, Dixie Youth Baseball Games, local soccer and football games, and at the Talladega Superspeedway. Other performances include: Talladega Cystic Fibrosis Charity Event, Charity Volleyball Tournaments for Children’s Cancer, Tipseas Bar in Gulf Shores, The Odenville Music Festival, The World Famous Rodeo Club, local radio stations, local churches and at many other local charity events. How do you balance your music with school and other obligations? As hard as it is, I always try to put school first. But right after I have all of my work done, I have my guitar in hand thinking of new music. I am inspired by little things in life and am known to write down ideas on my hand, napkins, or whatever I can get my hands on. Believe it or not, my best inspirations actually come to me in my sleep, and I have to wake up in the middle of the night and write them down. I suppose that could be considered a gift or a sign of insanity. As of right now, I am focusing on getting my music in the hands of someone in Nashville. After my performance in Dadeville, I have had some really excit-

ing phone calls and emails that will hopefully help me to get my music out there! I am also working on applications for colleges and getting ready for my senior year of high school. What has been your most fun experience? My most fun experience would have to be playing at the Rodeo Club, because it was an 18-and-older club, so I really wasn’t used to something like that! I felt pretty cool performing in a club that I technically couldn’t be at! Have you met anyone famous yet? I have had the pleasure to meet Taylor Swift when she came to Saks High School in 2007. I have also met LeAnn Rimes at the Knox Concert Series and Taylor Hicks at the Talladega Superspeedway. Hopefully, I will meet many more in the near future, particularly Kenny Chesney. Do you have any advice for someone who is looking to have her music heard? My advice to someone that is looking to have their music heard is to never give up, never pass up an opportunity to sing and to trust in God. What sparked your interest in music? I don’t remember not doing music. There’s pictures of myself at 4 singing at church and stuff like that, I just kind of never stopped. Music has been such a big part of my life. I don’t remember when it first ever started. When did music become more than a hobby? I was 22. It was the fist time I realized that I could start making money doing what I loved. I said, “hey, this sounds like a good career choice for me.” And it’s kind of been non-stop ever since. Describe your musical style … I think of myself as hard to describe because I love so many music genres, and I want those to come through in everything I write. … I like to steer toward all the genres that I can cover, but when somebody hears me talk or sing, they usually automatically assume it’s all country or bluegrass. I cover a wide range from Aretha Franklin to Guns and Roses. I love all different genres. Is it hard to balance music and a family? I don’t think so. I’ve always been so blessed it’s always come easy, I feel like it’s what God wants me to do, so, he opens all kinds of doors for me that I couldn’t do on my own. You know if I was working at McDonald’s, I’d have to balance my job and family, so, this way I feel like I have way more flexible hours. Family always comes first, and hopefully music will be a big part of all of our lives as we’re growing and they’re getting What has been your most fun experience? I love the chance to do a contest like Texaco Country Showdown because it puts you in front of so many more people that you know wouldn’t have seen you otherwise, but I think my favorite musical moment would have to be when my son (Cody) played bass with me at this little out-of-the-way place called Rabbittown. He and a friend got up, and it was so much fun to me to see them progressing to a possible music career or at least a love of music.

Do your children play a lot of instruments? They’re starting to discover it. To them, I think, they’ve seen me work so hard at my music career I think I’ve almost turned them off. But they’re starting to have songs that they love and stuff that they want to pick up a guitar and play and sing along with it, too. How many do you play? Bass, piano and my main instrument is guitar. But there’s banjo and fiddles all over the house, so, I’m hoping they’ll start picking those up, and I’ll have a band very soon. How many bands have you been a part of? Under a dozen. I haven’t been in that many bands. The main thing I’ve tried to maintain my solo identity as Kelli Johnson, and while I’ve been blessed to play with so many wonderful musicians over the years. Everybody remembers Distant Cousins, and right now I’m a part of a band, Sweetwater Road, and it’s just phenomenal — beyond all of my expectations as musicians. The other lady that sings with me, Michelle Cone, is just awesome. Do you have any advice for someone who is looking to have her music heard? Advice is always hard to give and even harder to take. The main thing is if you love it and you know you want to do this, treat it like a business. We were eating the other day at the breakfast bar and overheard a young musician talking about how many different websites he got his music on — and this was early, 8 in the morning — and he was adamant and excited talking about his career. I said, “You know, I love hearing that.” First of all, he’s not getting up at 12 and, well, musicians get this thing a lot of times that they’re due or have paid their dues, so, they’re allowed to sleep late. But it’s still hard work, so, you’ll have to treat it like any business or any job that you’ve had. You have to respect it and gain respect for yourself at the same time. REASON TO WATCH: Your name is David Hasselhoff. WHAT IT’S ABOUT: If you had the name of a famous or not-so-famous celebrity, would you be willing to switch places with this celebrity for a week to see how your name doppelganger lives? And would the celebrity switch places with you? Think of the fun! The humor! The eye-opening moments that prove celebrities are people, too (or that you’re just some poor schmo who happens to be named Pamela Anderson?). Well ...? Sold! In Sunday’s opener, the always game David Hasselhoff switches places with David Hasselhoff — who lives with wife and infant in Lake Jackson, Texas, surrounded by members of the extended family, also named Hasselhoff. Meanwhile, Texas-based Dave heads to Hollywood where he learns what it’s really like to be The Hoff. He lives in the Hoff mansion, meets the Hoff handlers, scurries away from the Hoff paps. MY SAY: Overcome by heat, or perhaps by a profound and inextinguishable boredom, my mind started to wander during Same Name. What could actually make this show interesting? The answer was, to me anyway, obvious: Get the most intriguing celebrity, of course. So I pulled up Whitepages.com, and started checking names. There are dozens of “Courtney Loves,” five “Charlie Sheens,” a half-dozen “Simon Cowells” and a pair of “Paula Abduls.” Sadly, there’s not a single other “Snooki” out there, but plenty of “Snooks.” (Wonder if that counts?) And did you know there are actually five “Barak Obamas” (no other Baracks) and a couple dozen “Michelle Obamas?” Here’s my point, and to paraphrase Ellen DeGeneres (six), I do have one: When you start doodling on the Internet instead of watching the show you are supposed to review, then either you, or the show, has a problem. I’m going with the latter. The Lake Jackson Hasselhoffs seem like very nice people, and we all know The Hoff is a good guy. But mix them all up together, and you get something that rivals drying paint for dramatic tension. BOTTOM LINE: Deadly.
