Larry Sylvester: Looks back over career in Anniston By Sherry Kughn The Star Marketing Department Larry Sylvester, a retired agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has a good story to tell about starting out with the agency under its first director J. Edgar Hoover. “He didn’t like wet palms,” said Sylvester recently as he slowed down during a busy day to talk about the 25 years he spent during the 1960s-80s after being sworn in by Hoover. “He was particular about everything, about our dark suits, about our white shirts, and about not shaking sweaty palms.” Sylvester, an engaging man with sincere eyes and a casual smile, wanted to make a good impression during the swearing-in ceremony in Washington, D.C. He soaked his hands in alum water, which was supposed to dry palms. It must have worked: Hoover hired him. Sylvester moved his family around a bit before eventually settling down to work in 1967 in the five-county area around Anniston. He and his wife Sheila raised two daughters in Anniston, served their community in various ways, and stayed active in civic, charitable, and church activities. Sylvester developed the discipline to stay involved in the community while an FBI agent. He juggled 40 to 50 FBI cases at any given time during his FBI career. It took him and four other agents working five and a half days a week to handle everything that went on at Fort McClellan, Anniston Ordinance Depot, and the penitentiary in Talladega. “Back then our workload was mostly based on auto thefts, organized theft along the Interstate highway, and fugitive work,” said Sylvester. “We also handled a lot of bank fraud and bank robberies. We never knew what the day would bring.” Sylvester said with a curt shake of the head that typical problems today involve drugs, sexual deviance, and political crimes. Looking back, Sylvester said that, in a way, criminals were more respectful during the years
he was with the FBI. Many, he said, served their time, got out, and were polite even to those who convicted them. “Back then it was, ‘catch me if you can and then this game is over,’ ” said Sylvester. “Now criminals are sometimes out of control.” Sylvester told that he took a mandatory retirement from the FBI after 25 years and then worked as executive vice president of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce for several years before retiring again. He re-entered law enforcement a few years ago when District Attorney Joe Hubbard asked him to work cold cases related to homicides. The job explained why Sylvesters was dressed during the interview in slacks and a navy collared shirt embroidered with a gold and red lawenforcement emblem. He can’t seem to get away from law enforcement and probably has a bend it in his genes. His father was a deputy sheriff in Normal, Ill. “I served a stint as deputy sheriff, too,” said Sylvester, “but did not want to stay there.” After leaving law enforcement, he took a job with a telephone company. Later, a friend talked him into applying to the FBI, a job that paid better than other law enforcement work. He is thankful for the good salary he had, but it bothers Sylvester that most law enforcement officers do not earn what they should. He explained that changes in the field, especially the use of technology in police work, means officers are better trained and educated in different fields. He thinks they deserve pay. “We have got to figure out a way to pay these college educated men who love their jobs,” said Sylvester. “They should not have to work second jobs or have their wives work.” The training and assistance given to law officers is important to Sylvester, since he also found time throughout the past few decades to coach young deputies. He often shared with them what he said is one of the best pieces of advice anyone ever gave him, that is to prioritize the family. Sylvester
also taught his charges to develop strong ethical standards and to engage with citizens in the community. “There should be no swagger or no thumbs in belt buckles,” said Sylvester. “They should take the time to say hello to everyone. They might need those friends one day.” Sylvester is amazed at the improvements in detective work. He remembers when matching fingerprints was a manual job. Now, he said, fingerprints are entered into a database with results in seconds. The same is true, he said, of DNA readings. Also, improvements in satellite technology, modes of communications, and cooperation between agencies have changed detective work for the better. Sylvester said he is glad to be in detective work and to be Anniston after all these years. “I had other opportunities to move up (and away from Anniston),” he said, “but my family was more important than that. And, this is a great place here.”

OXFORD POLICE SEEK LEADS IN THEFT SUSPECT IDENTITY The Oxford Police Department needs assistance in identifying two suspects in the theft of a laptop computer from Radio Shack, located in the Quintard Mall. On Monday, July 20, at approximately 5:50 p.m., two unidentified white males, both possibly in their late teens, entered Radio Shack in the Quintard Mall. One suspect distracted the sales associate while the other went behind the counter and stole one HP laptop computer. The suspects fled to the parking lot where they drove away in what appears to be a 1997-2002 Gold or Champaign Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV. The vehicle, which displayed no registration tag, was last seen traveling south on AL HWY 21. Leads still being pursued for missing woman By Elsie Hodnett Consolidated News Service RIVERSIDE — Investigators are continuing to pursue leads searching for a missing St. Clair County woman. Kelley Henderson Howard, 41, of Pell City has been missing since June 2. “We have made some discoveries, and have person or persons of interest,” Riverside Police Chief Rick Oliver said. Howard was last seen at Family Dentistry in Riverside, where she works as a dental hygienist. “Things are still the same,” said Robin Bush, Howard’s sister. “We are trying to work some and hang in there.” Bush said Oliver is tightlipped regarding the investigation. “He (Oliver) said when the investigation is done with, we (Kelley’s family) will be called in and go from the front to the back of everything. We can ask questions and find out answers at that point.” Bush said she has been back to work some. “I am working as much as I can,” she said. “Some days I get really upset at work and have to go home.” Bush said Howard’s husband, Boyd Howard, has not returned to work. “As every day and month goes by, it is harder on the family,” she said. “Not knowing is the hard part. I sit and think that I can’t call her or share things with her like I used to. And it is hard for Boyd to live without her.” Bush said Howard stays at home a lot. “It is hard to face the public,” she said. “When we do come out, everyone wants to know what’s going
on and it is hard for us to talk about it.” Bush said there are still rumors about her sister. “There are rumors going around that Kelley has been found, but Kelley hasn’t been found,” Bush said. “Kelley is still missing.” Bush said her father, Larry Henderson, has gone back to work some. “My mom (Peggy) stays home by the phone, waiting on any word,” she said. Bush said the family remains in close touch with one another. “Someone is always calling Shaun (Derusha, Kelley Howard’s son) to make sure he is OK,” she said. “We assure him that he will be all right.” Bush said Derusha and Boyd Howard speak daily. “We are a really close family,” she said. “We don’t go a day without talking to each other.” Bush said some of Kelley Howard’s high school friends have created a Facebook page to help search for Howard. “We are grateful to her friends for putting the page up,” she said. “Everyone wants to help.” Bush said she is a member of her sister’s Facebook page but is not associated with the page in any other way. “I keep up with what people are writing on the page, and have been in chat forums,” she said. “We want to let people know that the family is not accusing anyone, we just want her back. There are a lot of caring people out there. Say a prayer that the family has some closure.” Bush said she is grateful for media coverage on Howard’s disappearance. “It has been six weeks,” she said. “It is really getting unbearable on the family.
