MONDAY RECORD YOUR GUIDE TO PUBLIC RECORDS AND VITAL STATISTICS IN CALHOUN COUNTY
Off to work ... with a school nurse
Hundreds of ‘patients’ are potentially hers By Bill Edwards bedwards@annistonstar.com
Imagine a job where you have to be mom, detective, file clerk and above all, healer. That would be the job of school nurse, the post Demetria Houston has held at Oxford Middle School since October, 2004. She’s one of six nurses in the Oxford school system, and while her work may be less emergency-oriented than it once was at Regional Medical Center, where she gained experience in both delivery and operating rooms, the demands are no less incessant. More than 600 twelve- to 14-year-olds, all at a crucial stage of development, are her potential patients. “They’re transitioning, too,” she said of the children bound for adulthood. “They come here and they’re expected to be more adult-like.” She estimates 30-35 students visit her office on a typical day, and that of the school’s total enrollment she’ll see more than half of them during the year — some only for occasional bumps and sprains, others for daily pills. And therein lies one of the crucial duties of a school nurse: as gatekeeper to medicine. “All medication has to be brought in by a parent,” she said — students aren’t allowed to keep any with them, including even something as simple as aspirin. “You worry about something getting into the wrong hands,” she said. A parent herself, Houston understands the importance Please see work ❙ Page 3

Bankruptcies A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Nothern District of Alabama last week:

Demetria Houston sorts medication while on the job at Oxford Middle School.
work Continued from Page 1 of working with moms and dads and guardians to ensure kids in school get no more and no less medical attention than their own families would give them. Accordingly, she has ways of spotting whether a student in her office is genuinely ill as opposed to just nervous about a test that day or anxious about his or her personal life. She figures at least half her time is spent delving into that realm of a student’s well-being. Sometimes just reasoning with the student — Is your discomfort now going to be worth the classwork you’ll have to make up later? — resolves the issue. Other times, she’ll point the child across the hall to her colleague, school counselor Carla Gooden. “This is a stressful age,” Houston said. “You don’t realize kids have to deal with so many issues — it’s a real eye-opener.” But the partnership she’s forged between school and homes works well, she said, such as when she tells a parent of a health issue not noticed outside of school.
“They believe what we have to say — they’re on our side,” she said of the parents she deals with. That’s why she urges, “Listen to your kids when they say they’re sick, because we want them to be healthy in school.” It’s a partnership Houston knows well, having come up through Oxford schools herself. “I feel like it’s a privilege,” Houston said, to now work for the same school system which turned her into a successful graduate in the Oxford High School Class of 1990. Professional education followed at Jacksonville State University, Drake State University in Huntsville and at the University of Alabama’s campus in that city. With a new school year kicking off this week, Houston is looking forward to what she calls the most rewarding part of her job: “(Developing) relationships with these kids through the year and to see they’re happy, healthy and well-rounded.” Readers who know of interesting jobs — or perhaps common jobs that involve more than meets the eye — are invited to email bedwards@ annistonstar.com for a possible write-up for “Off To Work.”

Restaurant inspections Here are food service establishments recently inspected by the Calhoun County Health Department, along with scores. A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no deficiencies. Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is under way. Restaurants earning below 70 must raise their scores within seven days or face closure.
