Off to work ... with a communications director

As communications director for First United Methodist Church in Anniston, Stacy Booth is in charge of ensuring some 600 members know about the two dozen programs the 127-year-old congregation oversees. It’s a job made all the more challenging with the introduction of that Internet thing. Communication isn’t just a flyer passed out on Sunday mornings anymore, and outreach isn’t just a sign on the street — although Booth takes care of messages in those venues, too. “We’re always trying to do things the best way to get the information out,” said Booth, whose experience includes her degree in graphic design from Auburn University and designing pages for local trade publications and nonprofit groups. She also designs the seasonal Knox Concert Series programs and the smaller ones published for individual performances. A 1988 graduate of the Donoho School, Booth knows the area and above all believes in her work. She and her husband, Bryan, attended the church for some time before she melded her skills with the church’s needs. “I wanted to give back to the church — we were involved in it,” said Booth, who’s FUMC’s first-ever communications director. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. be extremely mindful of deadlines. “You’ve got to be very very organized,” she said. “I live by my calendar.” Even on a daily basis, the position of stacks of paper on her desk tells her something at a glance — the closer the stack, the more urgent is the attention it needs. Booth’s work entails talking to members through a variety of media. A church can’t afford to miss an elderly shut-in just because he doesn’t have the latest version of Flash Player downloaded. So if all a member wants is a folded piece of paper mailed to his or her home, then the church does that. “We try to be very thoughtful to all and not ever exclude a group,” she said. “You want God’s message to get out to people however they need to hear it.” Sometimes the message is on the street — on the church’s “bulletin board” along Noble Street. That’s primarily informational space, she said, the place where passers-by see that one message that gets them in the door. Various food service ministries, whether organized by the church or not, are examples of projects Booth might publicize there. Of course there’s a church Web site — www.fumc-anniston.org/ — and Booth is responsible for its design and upkeep. That’s one of the more fun aspects of her job, she said — that and the monthly newsletter. “I love this church and I love what I do. I’m excited about what this church does” and how to convey that message to the world at large, she said.
