Hungry folks who stop in at the Sonic on U.S. 78 West and Barry Street in Oxford can be forgiven if they think they’re visiting the Hughes family kitchen. That’s because going off to work with mother Tammy Hughes, her daughter Ashley Hughes McNeal, 24, and her other daughter, Alison Hughes Hiett, 23, means watching a trio who know how to serve up the grub. That’s their primary job — taking the food out to waiting motorists. In a larger sense, that means making it a good experience for whoever stops in, so really the women’s jobs are “customer satisfaction,” said Ashley. “We’re the ones who interact with the people.” Other employees work hard, too, obviously, but customers “just see us,” added Alison. Sometimes that means they have to be seen fixing problems. “If anything goes wrong we’re the ones who have to deal with it,” said Ashley. Collectively they have about 16 years’ experience at this Sonic location, and if they’ve learned anything it’s that you can’t stereotype people based on the vehicle they drive up in. Low-budget cars can still produce good tips that augment the women’s $4-anhour pay, they said. Ashley signed on first, nearly eight years ago.
