Anniston police seek information in murder investigation

On the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2009, Lecretia French’s body was found in the middle of the road on 20th St. between Walnut Ave. and McCoy Ave. She had apparently been assaulted and was bleeding and injured. French died on Saturday, August 1 due to injuries sustained during the attack. The Anniston Police Department would like anyone with information about the assault of French to come forward.

Bob Riley issued a proclamation offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the guilty person or persons involved in the disappearance of Kelley Henderson Howard of Pell City. A family friend matched the offer, making the total reward $10,000.

Family pleads with public for information in murder David Randall “Boone” Smith killed in apparent robbery in 2006 By Danny McCarty The Star Marketing Department
On January 16th, 2006, the life of one Cleburne County family was changed forever when David Randall “Boone” Smith, 52, was found murdered in his home during an apparent robbery. Smith died, leaving a wife and three children. Since he was home alone, there are no witnesses to his murder. In the three-and-a-half years since Smith’s murder, the family has gone through a lot of pain and anguish as they await an arrest in the case. So far, no arrest has been made. The Smith family has recently offered a $3,000 reward for the arrest, conviction and incarceration of the person, or persons, responsible for the murder. From his home in Douglasville, GA., Gary Smith, brother of the vicitm, said the family wants closure and justice not only for “Boone”, as David was called by family and friends, both also for their entire family. There has been no closure for Smith’s mother, who lived near her son at the time of the murder, and it has been especially hard on her. The family hopes that the reward will provide some new leads for the investigators in the case. Smith’s daughter, Amanda, prays every day that the case will be solved, and she hopes that the person, or per-

She wants them to “do the right thing”, so she and her family can put this sad chapter of their lives behind them. “My father was not perfect, but no one has the right to take another’s life from them. The ones responsible for this terrible crime need to be punished to the full extent of the law,” she said. Detective Dennis Green of the
Cleburne County Sheriff’s office is in charge of the investigation and said the murder investigation is still being actively pursued. Since the crime occurred near the Alabama/Georgia line, many law enforcement agencies have been involved in the case. The Cobb County Georgia Sheriff’s Office, Cedartown City Police, Piedmont Police, Anniston Police, Calhoun County Sheriff, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Alabama Bureau of

Investigation, and other agencies, have in the past, or are currently working to help solve the murder, he said. “The case will not be closed until it is solved. Nearly every week, I talk to someone about the case. Every time I talk to someone from the area where Smith lived, I ask them about ‘Boone.’” Green often gets two or three names from each of his contacts. These names, often “street names”, are sometimes difficult to track down, but an effort is made to talk to them. New leads are often uncovered during these question and answer sessions, and hopefully some helpful information can be obtained. With Cleburne County having around 20,000 residents and the Sheriff’s Department only having 12 deputies, it is often difficult to solve the crimes committed in the rural areas. In the last five years, or so, Green has seen an increase in crime. With the decline in the economy, Green said there has been more theft and drug activity, especially pertaining to crystal meth, than in the past. “People are trying to make money the easy way instead of working for it, Crystal meth is the worse thing that ever happened to Cleburne County. It is very hard to stop the production and sale of this very addictive drug,” Green said. Also with the economy being rather slow right now,

Green thinks that offering a reward in this particular case is a good thing. “Money talks. Once in another case dealing in a theft of property, a reward was offered, and a tip solved the case before that day was over. It is not likely a reward will help solve this murder case so quickly, but someone out there knows something about ‘Boone’ Smith’s murder, and the reward may entice them to come forward with that information.” Danny McCarty is a freelance writer in Anniston.
