Off to work ... with an employee health nurse

T.J. Carter keeps tabs on health of hospital workers By Bill Edwards bedwards@annistonstar.com

Health care providers take care of you, but who takes care of the providers themselves? That question is answered in the job description of T.J. Carter, the licensed practical nurse who monitors routine healthy habits of 1,400 employees and 300 volunteers at Regional Medical Center. She also gives flu shots to hospital employees and at area businesses. So if you’re not allergic to vaccinations, get in line. “Nobody likes getting shots,” Carter said, “but the ones who have had the flu line up first.” Carter and three other nurses have already vaccinated 900 employees this month, and will continue to do so into January. But she also monitors precautions taken for cleanliness, as well as treatment for other hazards, such as an employee being pricked by a needle or splashed by blood or other fluid; yes, the dreaded “paperwork” is also part of her job. And although not as prevalent as in decades past, tuberculosis continues to be a threat, so administering skin tests to detect the disease are also part of Carter’s work. “If they do have a positive test, we ensure they get proper follow-up,” she said. Bankruptcies A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

Even though she’s supervising health care for providers themselves, Carter says she doesn’t run into resistance from those older than her who might think they know better. “For the most part, they do what they’re supposed to,” she said. “They know things we’re doing here is something we have to do.” That way, these professionals can focus on their own work. “If these nurses have a needle stick, they’re more than happy to have someone else deal with that,”

she said. And Carter is happy to be that person, noting that nursing is “just one of those things I always knew I was going to do.” A Texas native who graduated from Ohatchee High School in 1998, Carter received her nurse’s training from Gadsden State Community College. Nursing in the medical-surgical unit is part of her previous RMC experience, and she’s been employee health nurse for 2 1/2 years. Carter likes her work for the people she works with and meets — everyone at the hospital comes under her eye at one time or another, if for no other reason than annual testing for tubercu-

losis. Plus, she said, “I get a lot of opportunities for education in this job,” both receiving and giving. In the latter category is included her work assisting with employee “health fairs” at area businesses once or twice a month and at RMC itself. She gives instruction in CPR, first aid and illnesses acquired through blood contact. “This is a great job,” she said. Readers who know of interesting jobs — or perhaps common jobs that involve more than meets the eye — are invited to e-mail bedwards@annistonstar.com for a possible write-up for “Off to Work.”

A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no deficiencies. Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway.
