MONDAY RECORD YOUR GUIDE TO PUBLIC RECORDS AND VITAL STATISTICS IN CALHOUN COUNTY

Off to work ... with a vintage boutique owner

Anniston store features unusual clothing, items By Bill Edwards bedwards@annistonstar.com

The corner bar or general store is where most people expect to go spill their troubles, and, as owner of Harvest Thrift and Gift, a boutique of vintage clothing and jewelry, Debra Henderson is happy to take on that job. “I’m a people person. I love to interact with people. People come in here and cry on my shoulder ... I’ve cried with ’em, prayed with ’em.” Henderson opened her business in September three years ago. Prior to that, she’d been a licensed practical nurse for 15 years. That experience left her drained, she said, but at the same time made her more positive that she wanted to be empathetic with people. That’s easy to do in the confines of her store, located just off the southwest corner of Eighth Street and Wilmer Avenue, where the eclectic mix of merchandise encourages browsing and conversation. The 56-year-old Wellborn native said people come in on their lunch breaks — that’s one reason she likes her downtown location — and they pass the word to other people. “It hasn’t been easy ... it’s not great yet, but people are starting to know I’m here,” she said. Bankruptcies A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

When they’re there, they see an extensive array of dresses of vintage designs representing several decades’ worth of taste. Visitors quickly realize that despite the name, this is not a “thrift” shop of the traditional sense. “Most everything I’ve got is vintage or unusual,” Henderson said. “I even have a Civil War reenactment ball gown. I have an original 1920s flapper dress.” She finds much of her merchandise through auctions, estate sales and yard sales. She takes some items on consignment, if

they’re of an unusual nature and in really good shape, she said. The historical nature of her selection sometimes results in a specialized clientele. “Kids from Jacksonville come down and buy their costumes,” Henderson said, referring to the Jacksonville State University drama department. Also aware of her shop are churches that have “old-fashioned days” and need suitable clothing for the occasions. Brides might find what they like, because Henderson’s job includes being on the lookout for white dresses to add to her collection. She can do minor alterations to make the dress fit perfectly, she said.

Apart from clothing, merchandise ranges from Japanese art to costume jewelry. A presidential commemorative plate — that would be President Kennedy — is on the lowest shelf of one display case, while an old reel-to-reel tape recorder is in its box nearby. Old purses and pocketbooks have prominent display. “I love vintage pieces and I love what I do,” she said. “I just feel like God blesses me with this stuff,” she said. Readers who know of interesting jobs — or perhaps common jobs that involve more than meets the eye — are invited to email bedwards@annistonstar.com for a possible write-up for “Off to Work.”

These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway.
