Anderson makes tax returns public in state AG race By PHILLIP RAWLS Associated Press

MONTGOMERY — A Democratic candidate for attorney general, James Anderson, has done something few politicians in Alabama do: make public his federal income tax returns. The Montgomery lawyer filed copies of his 2007 and 2008 tax returns with the State Ethics Commission on Friday. One of his opponents plans to release her tax return next week. Candidates for public office have to file financial statements with the Ethics Commission showing their income and assets in broad financial ranges, but they don’t have to file tax returns with specific figures. Anderson, a former chairman of the Ethics Commission, said he decided to go beyond what most candidates do because he supports transparency in government. “I think it’s a small price to pay, considering we’re asking the people of Alabama to trust us in representing their interests ahead of our own,” he said.

Anderson’s 2008 return showed he had adjusted gross income of $321,107; paid federal income taxes of $74,935; and reported gifts to charities totaling $32,292. For 2007, he reported an adjusted gross income of $271,727; paid $63,318 in federal income taxes; and listed $18,310 in gifts to charities. Anderson said he has not filed his 2009 return yet, but will make it public when he does and will keep disclosing his tax returns if elected. Anderson faces Mobile attorney Michel Nicrosi and Birmingham lawyer Giles Perkins in the Democratic primary on June 1. Nicrosi said Friday she expects to complete her 2009 tax return in the coming week and will make it public. “If you are in public office, you should not be afraid of scrutiny,” she said. Perkins calls Anderson’s disclosure a political ploy that he does not plan to follow. “If he had done a better job as chairman of the Ethics Commission maybe we wouldn’t have a crisis of public corruption,” Perkins said.
