MARRIAGE LICENSES

A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

arrests

restaurant inspections

The people listed in this arrest report, whose names and charges are obtained from public records, are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Here are food service establishments recently inspected by the Calhoun County Health Department, along with scores. A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no deficiencies. Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway. Restaurants earning below 70 must raise their scores within seven days or face closure.

SUNNY KING FORD work Continued from Page 1A Department, she holds what seems like the only job in existence that combines skills and knowledge needed in those other two venues. “There’s no getting bored, I can tell you that right now,” she said. The raw data she needs each week come from the list of felony warrants issued by the D.A.’s office. Each warrant means someone is suspected of having done something against the law — and most of the time, against another person. “If it’s anything other than a drug case, I will send you a packet of information,” Michelson said. That packet includes a flow chart describing the general process of a felony criminal case; worksheet for estimating restitution you, the victim, deserve; a booklet on your rights and responsibilities as a victim; and a brochure on how victims of crime might receive restitution for losses. That last one comes courtesy of the Alabama Crime Victims’ Compensation Commission, and brings up another point about Michelson’s job: She doesn’t dole out any money or cut any checks. She doesn’t even have to worry about preparing a budget. Rather, she said, “I work very hard to make sure (victims) are aware” that the state crime victims’ fund, or restitution from the guilty party, can be used to restore financial equity to a situation of loss. However, she added, “I never say what they will or won’t pay.”

Chuck, 7 p.m. on NBC: Chuck and Sarah (Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski) look forward to their bachelor and bachelorette parties, but Chuck’s doesn’t go as planned when some uninvited guests show up in this new episode. 90210, 7 p.m. on CW: Annie (Shenae Grimes) talks Marla (Sally Kellerman) into attending a screening of one of her old movies. Meanwhile, Ryan (Ryan Eggold) has a surprise visitor in this new episode. Mad Love, 7:30 p.m. on CBS: Larry (Tyler Labine) loses Connie’s (Judy Greer) camera, and she follows him around the city as he retraces his steps in an attempt to find it. Along the way, she learns there’s more to him than she thought in this new episode. Relapse, 8 p.m. on A&E: In the season finale, a sober coach has one week to help Courtney, a former professional ice skater who has kept doing drugs even after an almost-fatal overdose. Wes, a heroin addict whose father is a successful Hollywood director, feels like a failure compared to him. Law & Order LA, 9 p.m. on NBC: Morales and Jaruszalski (Alfred Molina, Corey Stoll) investigate a bank robbery in which the thief used a photo of her kidnapped son to get the teller to hand over money in this new episode. Hawaii Five-0, 9 p.m. on CBS: When a photographer is murdered while in Hawaii for a swimsuit shoot, Danny (Scott Caan) gets to interview the models. The eye candy isn’t all of the bikini model variety, however; singer and former soap hunk Rick Springfield guest stars as the doomed shutterbug in the new episode. Paranormal State, 9:30 p.m. on A&E: Paranormal investigator Ken Arrington leads a new group of investigators to check out reports of a demonic spirit in a family’s home in the season finale, “If I Should Die.”

Administrative functions from her office in the Calhoun County courthouse are only part of Michelson’s job, however. She estimates about half her time is spent “hand-holding,” either literally or figuratively, and informally talking things through with victims (formal, trained counseling is available through the Family Services Center of Calhoun County). She also leads a homicide victims’ support group for families of murdered loved ones. It meets once a month and “really does work” for many families, she said. She also answers lots and lots of questions posed by victims from a wide variety of cases. “Mostly it’s trying to make things easier for prosecutors and police,” she said. “I do a lot of explaining as to what’s going to happen, what happens next.” She also works with families involved as victims in capital cases — such as to ensure they have transportation to the execution site, if desired — or, less severely, letting those families know when a parole hearing is near. Helping victims be calm and collected when they testify to a grand jury is part of Michelson’s job, too. All told, she said, she’s happiest when she’s “working with somebody who’s just a totally innocent victim and I’m able to make them feel better — because they’re scared.” If you know of anyone who’ll talk about what he or she does for a living, or you are such a person yourself, drop a line to bedwards@ annistonstar.com for a possible write-up in “Off to Work.”

shot wounds, Brown said. Anniston police Sgt. Fred Forsythe said it was unclear Sunday afternoon what prompted Moore’s son-in-law to barricade himself inside Moore’s home, shoot her and turn the gun on himself. Officers were first alerted to an incident at the Saks address when they received a report of gunshots fired just after 7 p.m., police said. Anniston police, firefighters and EMS personnel arrived on scene to find the suspect armed with a gun. He fired multiple times in the direction of those responding first to the home. EMS workers said many of those bullets hit the side of their ambulance. “We’re lucky no officer was hurt,” Forsythe said. The suspect proceeded to lock himself inside his mother-in-law’s home, police said. Although members of the Anniston police Special Response Team were able to somewhat communicate with the suspect a couple of times during the standoff, that contact was “rough at best because of his unwillingness to cooperate,” Forsythe said. After hours of attempting to negotiate with the man, police fired tear gas canisters into the home and entered shortly afterward. They found Moore’s body and the man alive but suffering from the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Forsythe said. Exactly when the suspect used the gun against his mother-in-law and himself is still under investigation. Brown called the suspect’s prognosis “grave.” Forsythe also indicated that officials don’t expect the suspect to live, saying the case would probably end up as a murder-suicide. Investigators are gathering more details about the suspect’s identity, place of residence and relationship with Moore. Star staff writer Cameron Steele: 256-235-3562.
