A short story collection in ‘Pulse’ Pulse by Julian Barnes, Knopf, 2011; 240 pages, $25.

By CHARLEE HARRIS Special to The Star

Pulse is a collection of 14 short stories by Julian Barnes, whose reputation as a great storyteller is esteemed more in France than in his own county. That may seem like a strange misnomer, but the truth nevertheless. Pulse is humorous, compelling, dark, and there are moments of boundless despairs. Books that can make you run the gambit between laughter and tears has all the earmarks of good reading. The opening story, “East Winds,” is a tale about a newly

divorced real estate agent searching for love in all the wrong places. As he stumbles and fumbles his way through a new love affair, he soon learns curiosity most certainly does kill the cat. Also in the first half of Pulse is a sequence where Phil and Joanna’s seated you at the dinner table of several married couples in their middle age. Those are humorous and more contemporary. “Gardener’s World” is closer to our contemporary world as we know it today, as a childless couple, reconciliations are symbolized through their

kitchen garden. There is a host of symbolism through-out the entire book you must look for to get to the real mixture of each story. Every character will question, beg, or pray for more understanding of each given situation. Through Barnes’ bio it is learned several of these stories were written before the death of his wife. You can read about the devastation in “Marriage Lines.” The only problem it seems is its lack of substance and in the

narration. It is difficult at times to identify the narrator or even distinguish the conversations between various people. Yet, while some stories are difficult, some are just the opposite. Some do not finish with a wrap-up that pulls away from the characters. There are a lot of ineffective moments. “Pulse,” the short story, is the conclusion to this particular piece of work. It is a contrast of an unhappy marriage versus a solid one. Pulse for all its assets is still roughly related. Barnes’ The Lemon Table is one of his best. There is a diversity of short tales anyone could relate to. It is just a matter of personal taste …short stories versus the novel.

NEW YORK — In their own style, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina are the newest duo on the country scene. Just a week following the season finale of American Idol, the teenagers are together doing press like a team — and this team doesn’t roll alone: They’re equipped with publicists, security guards, managers, record label extras and their real bosses — their mothers. McCreery beat Alaina to become the season 10 champ, but the fact that they are both young country singers with similar goals puts them on the same career track. Ahead of their Idol Top 11 tour — which starts next month — they will visit Nashville to begin prep on their debut albums. “We’re going to work with the record people down there and get some songs straightened out and hopefully I’ll get to listen to them, get to learn them,” McCreery said. American Idol — the No. 1 rated show on TV — can make you a star, but not all of the show’s winners actually come out on top. Remember Taylor Hicks? What about Ruben Studdard? Alaina, 16, thinks country music fans are what kept her and McCreery in the running. “Well, country fans are really loyal, so I think that’s why Scotty and I did so good,” she said. “We’re young and so we appeal to a younger crowd, and I think that the combination of those two things really helped us out.” McCreery, a 17-year-old from Garner, N.C., said growing up his friends listened to Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync, while he jammed to Elvis and Johnny Cash. “I guess you could say I was the weird one. But, no, I was the one who listened to good music,” he said. McCreery says that uniqueness — along with his baritone-styled voice — is what led to his victory.

Jeff Christensen/Associated Press

Scotty McCreery, left, winner of ‘American Idol,’ and runner-up Lauren Alaina will begin work on their debut albums in Nashville. McCreery and Alaina are also on same page about recording pop music: While there’s interest, staying true to their country roots is their top priority. Alaina wants to follow in Carrie Underwood’s footsteps, while McCreery is hoping to maintain a classic country sound with a “contemporary twist to keep it up-todate.” “With the album I just want to establish myself as an artist and put my stamp on that album,” he said. “My main focus is going to be country music, that’s what I grew up with and what I love.” So far, the country world has been accepting: McCreery and Alaina’s first singles have hit the Top 40 on the country charts and the Top 20 on the pop charts. Their label, Mercury Nashville, ran an ad in the Billboard Country Update, a web newsletter, welcoming the singers and thanking “Country Radio for a great start.” But McCreery may already be on

the pop route: His song, “I Love You This Big,” was co-written by Ester Dean, who’s writing credits include No. 1 hits for Rihanna (“S&M,” “Rude Boy,” “What’s My Name?”) and Katy Perry (“Firework”). Dean has also written for Nicki Minaj and Usher. “(Dean has) written a lot of other pop and R&B songs as well so ... if we can get that kind of flavor in my songs and make it country and still make it current, then that would be fine with me,” McCreery said. When asked if he felt pressure to match the success of Carrie Underwood — or surpass the disappointing sales from albums by Lee DeWyze and Kris Allen — the teen seems unfazed. “I wouldn’t call it pressure,” he said. “I want to go out there and make the best record that I can, and I think if I do that people will buy it. It’s just up to me to put good songs on the album and get songs on that thing that people want to hear.” Then he paused, and said: “I guess that’s kind of pressure.”

Knox workers meet for luncheon

Christa Fair’s annual events celebrate the efforts of volunteers The inspiration begins here. It begins in the elegant living room of a two-story Victorian-style home on Leighton Avenue — one that has seen nearly 100 years of life. It begins with a discussion of the next concert season, with enthusiastic music lovHervey ers seated around Folsom an ivory-colored Artists in Action piano that was custom made for the owner of the house. And, above all, it begins with live music. Preparing for the coming Knox Concert season is hard work, but Christa Fair’s annual May musical luncheons keep volunteers up to the challenge. Ticket sales, ad sales, artist hospitality plans, and more committee work must be complete by autumn, but the effort is more fun when volunteers can enjoy the camaraderie of others who are determined to bring world-class music to the area. These gatherings accomplish that kind of motivation, thanks to Fair, who has planned and hosted the event for 30 years now. On the agenda each year is a performance by area musicians, a short business meeting, and a luncheon buffet prepared by Flora Ballard, an artist in her own right. Ballard has catered the luncheons for Knox since 1987. This year’s event on May 19 featured Abigail Acker, harpist, and violinist Laura Wall in a program titled, “Favorite Art Songs.” The pieces, famous and familiar, drew intense focus from the small audience. Ave Maria, (Meditation on the First Prelude by Bach) arranged by French composer Charles Gounod, was first, followed by Meditation from the opera Thais by French composer Jules Massenet. Thais is a romantic tragedy that has seen periodic revivals. British-American composer Felix Borowski’s Adoration was next, a composition heard occasionally in senior violin recitals; and finally, The Swan, a serene melody from French composer Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. It was inspiring to hear such a high-caliber

Red roses for both leading ladies of the event served as a “Bravo!” from Knox. Abigail, the daughter of Aaron and Debbie Acker of Saks, is a homeschooled high school senior. This is her fourth year of playing the harp. Her teacher is Judy Hicks, who is the principal harpist for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Acker has played with the Atlanta Youth Harp Ensemble and is currently the principal harpist for the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra in Birmingham. The daughter of Bill and Jennie Wall of Anniston, Laura is a junior at Florida State University. She is involved with orchestra and several chamber groups there and has played the violin for 11 years. In high school, she studied with Jeff Flannagan at Samford University and currently studies with Corinne Stillwell at Florida State. Laura comes from a musical family; the Wall family members are often seen on stage

and in the orchestra in CAST Theatre productions. Both girls have participated in the Knox student outreach program, the arm of the organization that goes into classrooms and introduces different forms of music featured at the concerts. “This is where I started thinking about music education as a major,” Abigail said. About playing the harp, she commented, “I chose the harp because it is so unique. It takes time to practice and to transport it to different locations. But it’s worth it.” Knox is looking at mid-October as the opening of the Knox season. Two of the four concerts have been scheduled : the musical My Fair Lady will be Nov. 17, 2011, and the St. Petersburg State Orchestra will be Jan. 20, 2012. The venue is the Anniston Performing Arts Center. Subscription tickets are $150. Call Ann Garner at 256- 237-3464. ‘Immediate gratif ication’ with a ukulele After 20 years fronting Pearl Jam, Vedder comes with a new collaboration By Nicole Brodeur

Tour Dates

Seattle Times

SEATTLE — Your heart is hurting. So the last thing you need is to listen to sad songs of love lost, played on a plaintive little ukulele by none other than Eddie Vedder. Has he no mercy? Still, you take in every note, every word on his new album, Ukulele Songs, and then settle in to talk with Vedder, admitting you’re a bit of a mess. “You really heard the record then,” Vedder says, kindly, and then suggests you buy a ukulele and try to strum the soreness out of your soul. That’s what Vedder did with this, his second solo album, which was released Tuesday. Ukulele Songs is a collection of originals, one Pearl Jam song (“Can’t Keep”) and covers of the 1926 ditty “Tonight You Belong to Me” and the 1931 standard “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Cat Power and The Swell Season’s Glen Hansard turn up for cameos. But for the most part, it is just Vedder and his uke, a collaboration that seems to be just what he needed after 20 years of fronting the rock powerhouse Pearl Jam. “How important that little instrument became to me,” he said. “It was beyond a little batch of songs or how to express yourself.” On June 15, Vedder will kick off a 19-date tour in support of Ukulele Songs. Tickets sold out in minutes — seconds, in some places.

To promote his new album ‘Ukulele Songs,’ Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will soon launch a 19-date tour, which sold out in minutes in some places. “My humility remains intact, even through hearing the shows sold out quickly,” Vedder said. “I was also aware that Charlie Sheen’s shows sold out in similar fashion. “I am not puffed up about it.” Maybe the ukulele keeps him humble. A few years ago, Vedder was on a surfing trip in Hawaii with a friend. His friend went to buy fish, and Vedder, two cases of beer. He was sitting on them outside some stores when he noticed a Kamaka tenor ukulele, displayed in a drugstore window. “I went in and picked it up and it sounded great,” Vedder said. “And I must have had the cash on hand because I walked out with it.” He sat back down on the beer, took the ukulele out of the box and started fooling around. “Immediately, a melody came out,” he said. “It must have sounded like something.” Must have; passers-by tossed money into the open case. First a dollar, then 50 cents. “It was immediate grati-

fication that maybe I could go places with this thing,” he said. “That’s just the nature of that instrument. “This little four-string songwriting tool started changing the way I brought songs to the group.” Over time, that little uke would become Vedder’s constant companion. On airplanes, where he would carry it on — once getting stopped by a flight attendant because it had (presumably dangerous) strings. Into the studio, to record his soundtrack to the 2007 film Into the Wild. “As far as inanimate objects being friends goes,” Vedder said, “I think that is right on the list. My Martin ukulele is a work of art. It’s going to live long after me.” At times on the record, the ukulele seems to speak for Vedder, who sounds vulnerable yet hopeful, like a suitor standing on the porch with a fistful of daisies. Other times, the strings are trying to cajole him, cheer him, like a child dancing around him as he plays. “If these songs were written on a conventional guitar with drop-D tuning, it

would send you off a cliff,” he said. “So I feel like writing sad songs on a happy instrument is what keeps it in the realm.” The LP version of Ukelele Songs will include a songbook — Vedder encouraging people to play for themselves. “Things like guitars and ukuleles, you should never part with it,” he said, “because there will probably be good, healthy times spent, just playing and writing.” Speaking of writing: Pearl Jam is currently working on its 10th studio album. “We’re arranging the songs right now,” Vedder said. “It’s not my favorite part, not anybody’s favorite part. But when the work gets done, we can get excited about how we work together, the new plateaus of communication and understanding each other.” Indeed, this summer, Pearl Jam will celebrate its 20th anniversary by headlining a two-day festival in Wisconsin and launching a Canadian tour. September will see the release of Pearl Jam Twenty, a documentary made by friend and director Cameron Crowe. The film will have an accompanying soundtrack album and book. “We are each happily part of a gang,” Vedder said of the band. “Let’s plug in and play loud and fast and hard, and that will keep us from getting old and boring.”

MTV President Stephen Friedman called Witherspoon “one of the most versatile and accomplished performers of her time.” Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis will host Sunday’s ceremony at the Gibson Amphitheater, where Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey, Cameron Diaz, Selena Gomez and Nicki Minaj are among those set to present the prizes. Fans voted online for the winners in categories such as best kiss, best villain and best line from a movie. MTV chose Witherspoon, who joins previous Generation Award winners Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey. Sunday’s show will also feature a first-look at footage from the latest Twilight installment, Breaking Dawn, Part 1.

After having to sit through the last couple of installments, X-Men: First Class is really quite refreshing. It’s refreshing in a way that is reminiscent of the latest Star Trek. It’s light and fun with good energy and no major flaws. Ultimately, First Class doesn’t really reach the level of X2 or the first Iron Man, but it makes a fair stake for itself, mainly behind the performances of James McAvoy (who plays Charles Xavier) and Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehnsherr as he makes his transformation into Magneto.) The film starts with young Erik folding in a gate at a concentration camp after being taken from his parents. He is then taken to Nazi officer Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), who tries to activate young Erik’s magnetic powers by threatening to shoot his mother if Erik can’t move a coin with his mind. It’s almost as if Shaw is trying to create a comic book supervillain. And then we have young Charles Xavier finding a young Mystique/ Raven, the teenage version played by

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS HHH rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some sexual content including brief partial nudity and language Running time: 2:12. Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, Kevin Bacon Jennifer Lawrence for the majority of the film, stealing food from her kitchen. The film plays out in the backdrop of the Cold War as Charles, Raven and Erik find each other, they also find that Shaw, now teamed up with Emma Frost (January Jones) and two disposable baddies, is dead set on starting up World War III and the extinction of us lesser humans. The good guys of course have to try and stop this, teaming up with the CIA and recruiting more mutants, Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Angel (Zoë Kravitz), Sean Cassidy/Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones), Alex Summers/ Havok (Lucas Till) and Darwin (Edi Gathegi). All these young cast members lend

to the film a great deal of energy and charisma, which director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake,’ Kick-Ass’) uses well. And of course, it wouldn’t be the XMen without the over-arching theme of alienated outcasts who deal with rejection, fear and hate – themes that have drawn awkward teens to their stories since the days of Stan Lee. The metaphor here extends — in some places less subtly than others — to the LGBT community and at one point when McCoy is asked why he never mentioned his mutation, he replies: “You didn’t ask, I didn’t tell.” Despite the film being over two hours long, it’s very well-paced. The special effects are all up to par, the acting is on point most of the time – Lawrence does a great job playing the transformation from insecure to empowered — and the score is well done. Most fanboys will probably disagree with me here, but there might have been a bit too much winking and nudging with the inside jokes. Ultimately this is good summer fare, nothing here that’s breaking any genre boundaries, but you won’t be disappointed if you venture out and catch it this weekend.

Blasts, babes and bad guys ‘Drive Angry’ a return to the days of drive-in theatres, outdoor screens By Rick Bentley McClatchy Newspapers

This week’s new DVD releases range from the hysterical to the historical. Drive Angry, Grade B: The film’s a throwback to when drive-in theaters were as prominent as Starbucks are today. Films that filled those outdoor screens weren’t concerned with plot and character development. All that mattered were blasts, babes and bad guys. The blasts are provided by Nicolas Cage, who plays John Milton in a very obvious reference to the epic Renaissance poem Paradise Lost. When Milton’s daughter is killed by members of a cult and his granddaughter is scheduled to be sacrificed, Milton escapes the fiery pits to seek revenge. It’ll make you nostalgic for the cheesy movies that made drive-ins so much fun. Undertow, Grade A-: Javier Fuentes-Leon’s powerful film looks at love, loss and faith. A Peruvian fisherman (Cristian Mercado) struggles with a secret love that, if revealed, will hurt his wife. He must make a tough decision about revealing his true feelings to give the ghost of his lover (Manolo Cardona) peace. The director blends the sweetness of the love story with the emotional turmoil the fisherman faces. It plays out against a brilliant background of the small fishing village. Brad Meltzer’s Decoded: Season 1, Grade B: Brad Meltzer hosts the History Channel series that looks at big historical mysteries such as the first Presidential Codes, the hidden messages of the Statue of Liberty and the ciphers protecting the location of

That may seem impossible with the explosion of information available through the Internet, but Meltzer says the Internet has made getting to the truth more difficult than before. Also new on DVD this week: Psych: The Complete Fifth Season: Cable series about an unorthodox detective agency Rookie Blue: The Complete First Season: ABC drama about a group of young police officers. SG-U Stargate Universe: The Complete Final Season: The final episodes of the cable series about a group of lost voyagers. True Blood: The Complete Third Season: The drama continues in this HBO vampire series. Biutiful: Javier Bardem stars in this story of a man struggling with good and evil.

Neil Young: Music Cares Tribute: Contains live covers of 17 of Young’s songs by Dave Matthews, Lady Antebellum, Ben Harper, Norah Jones and Elton John. Swamp People: Season 1: Cable series about the wild life in swamps. Rio Lobo: The John Wayne classic is being released on Blu-ray. Hijos del Carnval: Seasons One & Two: Blood ties are more blood than ties with the family in this HBO series. Good intentions aren’t enough for AMG ‘Lion’ the lion of judah H1/2 rating: PG for scary images. Running time: 1:27 Starring: Voices of Ernest Borgnine, Scott Eastwood, Michael Madsen, Georgina Cordova and Sandi Patty. By Rick Bentley McClatchy Newspapers

Associated Press

Chris Hemsworth, who portrays the title character in ‘Thor’ the movie, also does voiceover work in the ‘Thor’ game.

Movie heroes moving to video games By Rick Bentley Fresno Bee

SAN FRANCISCO — Comic book companies want to make sure that when you get home from the latest superhero film you can have your own super time. SEGA’s Thor: God of Thunder video game is already in stores and Captain America: Super Soldier will be available on July 19 in connection with the Marvel Comics-inspired movie releases. Warner Bros. interactive will offer up Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters on June 7 to go along with the DC Comics summer movie. Because video games have become such a big part of the comic company business plan, there’s as much time and effort put into them. It’s almost as if they were a feature film. Writers who have worked in the comic book world and actors who have helped bring the characters to life on screen are part of the process. Marvel turned to comic writer Christos Gage for the script for Captain America: Super Soldier. Although this is Gage’s first script for a video game, he knows the Marvel universe, having written for the Avengers Academy, Invaders, World War

“In comics you have absolute freedom ...” — Christos Gage, comic writer Hulk: X-Men and Iron Man. “I’ve written in the past for TV/film and comic books. Video games are an interesting middle ground,” says Gage. “In comics you have absolute freedom. Anything you can imagine you can draw. Or someone else can draw it since I can’t. But you don’t get to work with actors the way you do in film and TV. “With video games you have a lot of budgetary freedom. Not total, but a lot. Plus, you get to work with voice actors. It’s an interesting middle ground.” The video game has Captain America battling Nazis as he makes his way through enemy castles with a variety of super skills. Cage was happy when he was told the game would be in line with the movie and deal with Captain America during World War II. He feels like that’s a proper way to start a new video game franchise. Later games can take the character into modern storylines.

The other tie will be Chris Evans — who’s playing Captain America in the upcoming movie. He voices the hero in the video game. That vocal crossover carries through the new super hero video games. You’ll hear the voices of Thor movie stars Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston in the Thor God of Thunder video game. The game goes deeper into the heroic tales of the Thor universe as players take on the role of Thor as he battles through numerous worlds of Norse mythology to overcome foes introduced in the comic books. There’ll be a similar ring to the voice talent for Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters as Ryan Reynolds provides the voice of Green Lantern. Players must uses the power ring to defeat the Manhunters, an android race out to destroy the Green Lantern Corps. All three games will be available for Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation3 and Xbox 360. Super hero video games don’t have to be tied to a film release. Games featuring Spider-Man and X-Men will be available this fall.

If films were judged solely on good intentions, The Lion of Judah would be a success. It’s an effort by AMG Films to release a family-friendly animated movie with a solid religious message. Good intentions aren’t enough. Except for a terrific soundtrack from Greg Sims, the film’s a mess. The writing is a jumble of Bible stories held loosely together by a group of animals so annoying you’ll wish Noah had left them off the ark. Judah (voiced by Georgina Cordova) is a lamb with the heart of a lion. When he’s taken to Jerusalem to be sacrificed, an odd menagerie of farm animals decide to save him. Their path crosses with Jesus in his final days. The script by Brent Dawes is so thin it barely has enough moments to qualify as a feature film. When he’s not mixing up Bible stories, he’s padding scenes long critter walks and annoying ramblings. If you boiled this movie down to its important elements, it would be shorter than a half-hour TV show. Generally, the voice casting is solid. Ernest Borgnine brings a fatherly feel to the role of the rat Slink and Michael Madsen has the world-weary voice needed for the raven leader Boss. But great voices don’t matter when the writing is this bad. The script’s weaknesses are magnified by poor animation. If it had been released direct to DVD, the stiff movement of the computer-generated characters and stark backgrounds wouldn’t have seemed so juvenile. Because the film is opening in theater complexes showing the extremely polished Kung Fu Panda 2” the difference in quality is striking. There’s an audience for this film from directors Deryck Broom and Roger Hawkins. But The Lion of Judah is so technically inferior, it fails despite its best intentions.

IBM’s Watson named ‘person’ of the year by the Webby Awards By Jake Coyle Associated Press

Nickelodeon/Associated Press

Po, voiced by Jack Black, begins his training with Master Shifu in ‘Kung Fu Panda.’ ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ in 3-D opened last weekend with $62.2 million.

Director Adam McKay and Chris Henchy, cofounders of the comedy website Funny or Die, will be honored as film and video person of the year. In the earlier-announced Webby winners, Funny or Die led with a total of nine awards. All is not light and frothy on summer reading list For all of its glorious sunshine, summertime takes readers to a lot of dark places. Writers prove that many new books go beyond light beach material. This year’s Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, “A Visit From the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan, came out last June. That same month saw a big dystopian/science fiction thriller by an English professor. Justin Cronin, author of “The Passage,” doesn’t like to stereotype summer reading. “Espionage fiction is my go-to genre that’s diverting, but my summer reading isn’t that different,” says Cronin. In July, John Dalton will follow his literary debut, “Heaven Lake,” by delving into a creepy and dangerous Ozark summer camp. “I did figure Scribner would want to market it in the summer because it’s set in a summer camp,” says Dalton, a professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. But

“some of the best books of the year” are released then, he says, so he doesn’t mind. “The Inverted Forest,” which shares a title with a J.D. Salinger story, tells a tale of suspense and intricate characters. “I wanted to write a literary novel that didn’t bore the reader,” Dalton says. “There’s always something interesting going on.” That said, there is a reason summer books have their reputation for fun: Fewer seem to be about foreign diplomacy and more are geared toward robots (or dragons) trying to take over the world. This season’s new books go both to the bright beach and into shadowy woods. Here is a selection of upcoming titles (publication dates are subject to change). T he summer reading list Favorite series

• Jeffrey Deaver’s “Carte Blanche” (Simon and Schuster/ June 14). Deaver’s own books do well, but now he’s stepped in to contribute to a legacy spy series • that of James Bond. • Paul Doiron’s “Trespasser” (Minotaur/June). A Maine game warden is drawn into the case of a brutalized woman that seems to echo a previous killing. Is the wrong man in jail? • Janet Evanovich’s “Smokin’ Seventeen” (Bantam/June 21). Stephanie Plum still hasn’t solved her guy problems, but the mystery she must solve is why corpses are showing up in a construction lot. • Tess Gerritsen’s “The Silent Girl” (Ballantine/July 5). Rizzoli and Isles solve a chilling murder in Boston’s Chinatown. • John Hart’s “Iron House” (Thomas Dunne/July 12). A hit man tries to get away from New York, but he finds plenty of bad guys in his home state of North Carolina. • David Ignatius’ “Bloodmoney” (Norton/June 6). A CIA-type group tries to buy off enemies in Pakistan, but it isn’t quite working as U.S. spies are getting bumped off anyway. • John Sandford’s “Buried Prey” (Putnam/May). Long-missing girls are finally found when a house is demolished. Maybe Lucas Davenport should compare notes with Stephanie Plum. • James Rollins’ “The Devil Colony” (William Morrow/ June 21). A skull marked with a five-pointed star and a sickle-shape moon sends a covert investigator toward secrets about the founding of America.

History

• Erik Larson’s “In the Garden of Beasts” (Crown/May). Already a best-seller, Larson’s story concerns prewar Germany and a U.S. ambassador who decides he must get his family home. • Charles Mann’s “1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created” (Knopf/August). The author of “1491” details the exchange of flora and fauna between America and Europe. • Howard Markel’s “An Anatomy of Addiction” (Pantheon/July). Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, and William Halsted, a pathfinding surgeon, were cocaine addicts who struggled to stop using what had been considered a wonder drug, medical historian Markel says. • Richard White’s “Railroaded” (Norton, Tuesday). Rail-

road barons bribed Congress and left chaos in their wake in this lively history of the 19th-century transcontinental railroads. Publishers Weekly calls it witty and astute. • Julie Winch’s “The Clamorgans” (Hill and Wang/May). The history of the Clamorgan family, from Frenchman Jacques Clamorgan, who bought land in St. Louis before the Louisiana Purchase, to his mixed-race descendants, some of whom passed as white.

Here and now

• Simon BaronCohen’s “The Science of Evil” (Basic/June). British autism researcher argues that there should be a new psychological diagnosis: “empathy disorder.” • Pamela Haag’s “Marriage Confidential” (Harper/June). Today’s marriages are more like friendships than loving unions, Haag says, with focus on the needs of children. • Peter Tomsen’s “The Wars of Afghanistan” (PublicAffairs/July). Tomsen recounts the recent history of Afghanistan and recommends how America should handle its future with the conflict-ridden country.

Fantasy, horror & science fiction • Laurell K. Hamilton’s “Hit List” (Berkley, June 7). Can vampire hunter Anita Blake still be alive after 20 books? You bet, but hit men are headed for St. Louis. • George R.R. Martin’s “A Dance With Dragons” (Bantam/July 12). The Seven Kingdoms still aren’t getting along in the 1,000-page fifth volume in the “A Song of Fire and Ice” series. • Dan Simmons’ “Flashback” (Little, Brown/ July). The U.S. has reduced its nuclear arsenal, and Muslim terrorists attack Israel. The present is depressing, so Americans take drugs to relive the past instead of preparing for the future. • Daniel H. Wilson’s “Robopocalypse” (Doubleday/June 7). In Frankenstein-meets-Jurassic Park, robots decide they want to be in charge. The novel has been optioned by director Steven Spielberg.

Sisters and girlfriends

• Cathy Holton’s “Summer in the South” (Ballantine/May). A Chicago gal, taking a chance to escape and write a novel, travels to Tennessee to stay with two aristocratic, elderly sisters. • Lisa See’s “Dreams of Joy” (Random House/May). See continues the story of sisters Pearl and May from “Shanghai Girls,” with Pearl’s daughter Joy running away to find her birth father.

• Ann Brashares’ “Sisterhood Everlasting” (Random House/June). The sisters of the traveling pants are in their late 20s now, and Brashares gears the newest in the series for adult readers. The author will be in town June 28. • Jennifer Weiner’s “Then Came You” (Atria/July 12). A decade after her debut novel “Good in Bed,” the popular author offers a story of four women and a baby. An older woman, who has a stepdaughter, can’t get pregnant, so a college student donates an egg and a surrogate mother carries it.

Literary leanings

• David Anthony’s “Something for Nothing” (Algonquin/ June 7). Satirical debut novel about a businessman who has bought a few too many things (like a Tahoe cabin and a racehorse). He takes the “I’ll just sell drugs for a while” route, which, as we know from “Breaking Bad” and “Weeds,” is not usually an easy way out. • Stefan Merrill Block’s “The Storm at the Door” (Random House/June 21). Block, praised for his debut novel “The Story of Forgetting,” again finds inspiration in his family’s past in a wrenching 1960s-era story about a depressed father who is sent to a mental • hospital. • Bonnie Jo Campbell’s “Once Upon a River” (Norton/July). An impoverished teen, abandoned by her mother, leaves her Michigan home with a gun and struggles to survive on her own. • Keith Donohue’s “Centuries of June” (Crown/Tuesday). The author of “The Stolen Child” uses ghost tales, history and dreams in a story told by a shooting victim (and the suspects) as his life passes before his eyes. • Kate Christensen’s “The Astral” (Doubleday/June 14). Brooklyn poet Harry Quirk’s name alone seems to signal the novel’s focus on a group of oddball characters he deals with after his suspicious wife kicks him to the curb. • John Dalton’s “The Inverted Forest” (Scribner/July). Summer camp counselors are unprepared when they find out that their first campers will be disabled adults, wards of Missouri. The second novel by the author of “Heaven Lake.” • Ron Hansen’s “A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion” (Scribner/June). Erotic tension marks a 1920s love affair that leads

to the murder of a woman’s husband. Like Hansen’s “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” this new novel is based on a real-life scandal. • Bobbie Ann Mason’s “The Girl in the Blue Beret” (Random House/June). A World War II airman is shot down over France and hides in safe houses. He returns years later to find some of the people who helped him survive. • Ann Patchett’s “State of Wonder” (Harper/June 7). A scientist for a drug company journeys to the Amazon to find a rogue researcher whose experiments suggest she may have drunk something from Joseph Conrad’s Kurtz. • Scott Phillips’ “The Adjustment” (Counterpoint/August). In 1950s Kansas, not every resident feels the postwar boom. Phillips offers a noir novel of blackmail and murder. • Sapphire’s “The Kid” (Penguin/July 5). If you felt for Precious, the sexually abused teen heroine of “Push,” you’ll find it tough to learn about her orphaned son Abdul Jones.

Bios and memoirs

• Jaycee Dugard’s “A Stolen Life” (Simon & Schuster/ July). Held captive for 18 years, Dugard tells the story of her kidnapping at age 11, bearing two children during captivity and her life with her abductors, Phillip and Nancy Garrido. • Steve Friedman’s “Lost on Treasure Island” (Arcade/ June). The former St. Louisan heads to Manhattan’s bright lights and a job at GQ magazine and recounts in a self-deprecating memoir about crushing on celebrities and looking for dates at 12-step meetings. • Eva Gabrielsson’s “’There Are Things I Want You to Know’ About Stieg Larsson and Me” (Seven Stories/June). The longtime companion of the Swedish journalist gets personal about the author of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” • Mark Seal’s “The Man in the Rockefeller Suit” (Viking/ June 2). A German youth comes to America and passes himself off as Clark Rockefeller, gaining entrance to country clubs and financial institutions, even fooling his Harvard-educated wife into thinking she really married up. • Miles J. Unger’s “Machiavelli” (Simon and Schuster/ June 14). The ruthless political strategist has been misunderstood, according prepublication information. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Romano matures with ‘Men of a Certain Age’ By Frazier Moore Associated Press

NEW YORK — On Wednesday’s return of Men of a Certain Age, mild-mannered party-store owner Joe has a confusing brush with his ex-wife. Terry, the failed-actor-turned-carsalesman and perennial bachelor, seems ready to settle down with his new girlfriend. And Owen, who runs his father’s struggling car dealership, makes a pivotal decision about his career. To put it another way: There are no murders, zombies or superhuman capers. The three lifelong pals who now are coping with mid-life are such remarkably ordinary heroes for a TV series they seem downright exotic. As played by series stars Ray Romano, Scott Bakula and Andre Braugher, these guys are never larger-than-life, but instead recognizably true-to-life. Men (airing at 10 p.m. EDT on TNT for this six-week mini-season) was duly rewarded for its special brand of normalness when it premiered in late 2009, winning critical praise and healthy ratings. This year, it won a prestigious George Foster Peabody award, administered by the University of Georgia and popularly known as the Pulitzer of the electronic media. The Peabody judges hailed the series as “comical, poignant and harrowing, sometimes all at once.” Receiving the award onstage at the annual luncheon in New York last week, Romano proudly wisecracked, “I just want to say to my wife of 23 years: Maybe NOW you’ll watch the show.” A few hours earlier, over breakfast at their hotel, Romano and Men co-creator Mike Royce looked back on how their prize-winning show had come about. The short answer is, naturally. A few years back, both men were feeling a bit of middle-age angst in the aftermath of Romano’s hit comedy Everybody Loves Raymond, on which Royce served as a writer and executive producer. The CBS show’s nine-season run had concluded on a high note in 2005, Romano recalled. “When Raymond ended, I was on the top of the world. Cloud 9, money, free time, golf, go places! And my therapist said, ‘You want to start coming twice a week?’” “I said, ‘There are times where I don’t have enough to say coming ONCE a week,’” Romano, now 53, chortled wryly. “Within three months, I was going twice a week.”

‘Hero pilot’ is ready for new CBS News job By David Bauder Associated Press

‘Men of A Certain Age’ cast members, Scott Bakula, left, Ray Ramano, center, and Andre Braugher pose together at the 70th Annual Peabody Awards in New York on May 23, 2011. “Right after Raymond,” he explained, “I had a world-is-my-oyster attitude, but I found out I don’t like oysters. I had this existential emptiness. ‘What is my purpose? Who am I?’ I had a big identity crisis.” “I had the same problem, but with less money,” laughed Royce, who is now 47. So Romano and Royce began commiserating. As Romano recalled, “I said, ‘Let’s meet. You going crazy like me?’” “We talked about how we both felt very adrift,” Royce said. Meanwhile, the idea for a new show began to percolate. The character they wrote for Romano was a newly divorced father of two with a gambling problem and a job that seemed to brand him as a variation of the timeless sad clown: a man who runs a party store for whom life isn’t a party. He is also, like so many people, looking for a do-over: He wants to qualify for golfing’s senior tour, which would offer him at 50 the chance to resurrect his long-ago-abandoned dream of being a golf champ. Romano is a lifelong golfer who, for this breakfast, happened to be sporting a well-worn Pebble Beach hoodie. “Write what you know,” said Romano. “That’s what we did with Raymond,” which, of course, was based on his fractious home life with a wife, kids, parents and brother under foot. The new show, an hour drama-with-

comedy instead of a half-hour sitcom, would be more reflective, more nuanced, more bittersweet than Raymond. And, inasmuch as it focused on three nearing-50-year-old-and-beyond-the-demo chums, it should have been a hard sell at the networks. “Thank God I didn’t think about that when we were pitching the show,” Romano said. “If there’s something to worry about, I’ll find it.” Some networks passed — “It isn’t loud enough,” one network complained — but TNT grabbed it. Then these partners wrote a pilot that, as Royce said, “was about as bleak as the show has ever been — which, of course, scared certain people, including TNT. But there has to be some pain before the characters can come out of it. And as we go along, we find out more and more how we can be funny without being jokey.” As they go along, has doing the show given Romano any personal insight about navigating his own middle age? “I don’t know,” he replied, caught short by the question. “My character is still kind of grasping. He still hasn’t gotten to a place of contentment.” A bit like Romano? “I ask my therapist, ‘Why can’t I just sit back and be happy?’ And he says, ‘Well, first of all, I need to make a living.’” Romano wants to keep making a living, too. So don’t bet on him and Royce transforming their characters into a state of bliss.

NEW YORK — Retired pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger expects a lot more from his new job at CBS News than waiting for a plane to crash so he can be a “talking head.” Sullenberger, who became a national hero two years ago when he landed a crippled U.S. Airways jet in the Hudson River and saved 155 lives, is the network’s on-air aviation and safety expert. He wants to keep a close eye on the industry where he worked for decades. Sullenberger made his debut Tuesday on the CBS Evening News, talking with anchor Harry Smith about the crash into the Atlantic Ocean two years ago of an Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, sullenberger to Paris. Over the past week, teams have pulled 75 bodies from the 2009 crash site. “We can’t assume that because aviation has continued to get safer — accidents are relatively rare now,” Sullenberger said in a recent interview. Recent stories about sleeping air traffic controllers should be a warning for the industry, said Sullenberger, who retired last year as an active pilot. If schedules continue to be built for controllers, pilots, mechanics, flight attendants that ignore the body’s need for sleep and recovery time, “then ultimately we’re going to create situations where the system will fail.” Since retiring as an active pilot last year, Sullenberger has kept busy with public speaking, consulting and writing. He’s working on his second book, on leadership; his first, a memoir titled Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, came out last year. His relationship with CBS News developed after giving a 60 Minutes interview about U.S. Airways Flight 1549 when the show’s executive producer, and now CBS News chairman, Jeff Fager visited his northern California home. Hiring Sullenberger was a coup for CBS, which announced it at a recent meeting with its affiliated stations.

TV CROSSWORD

Mitch Haddad/ABC/Associated Press

Chef Jamie Oliver during a scene filmed in Los Angeles from the second season of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, on the ABC Television Network.

Jamie Oliver’s show back June 3 By Rich Heldenfels Akron Beacon Journal

Q: Would you please let us know what happened to Jamie Oliver’s show that was to be filmed in California? We watched the first two episodes, then it disappeared. It was very informative. We were really looking forward to new episodes. A: According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC pulled Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution during the competitive May sweeps because it thought that a Dancing With the Stars recap would do better in the ratings. The series is due back in ABC’s lineup on June 3. Q: Whatever happened to Vinita Nair from the ABC early-morning news? A: She left World News Now — and ABC News as a whole — in February and did not indicate what her next job would be. She said at the time she planned to take an extended vacation and to enjoy sleeping in. Q: Do you have any idea when Royal Pains will return? A: It will be back on USA Network on June 29. Q: I saw part of this old movie a while back about the resort town right next to a volcano. It also had

a cantilever building over the rim of the volcano. There was also a elevator going down the shaft of the volcano. I think it was in the 1970s. Can you find out what the movie was called? A: I’m not sure. Questions that come with descriptions of single scenes or props in a movie are tricky. But I think you are remembering When Time Ran Out ..., from 1980. It has a volcano, a resort town, a building on the volcano’s lip, a pod that lowers into the volcano’s crater — and a cast that includes Paul Newman, William Holden and Jacqueline Bisset. If you want to check it against your memory, it is on DVD — and posted in pieces on YouTube. Q: I remember a TV western series called The Outlaws or Outlaws. Rod Taylor was the star. The twist was these 1880s outlaws go through some sort of time warp and find themselves in modernday Texas. It was shown for one season sometime in the ‘80s, I believe. I have not been able to find it on DVD or tape anywhere. Do you know if it is available, and if so, where? A: Outlaws (no The) aired on CBS in 1986-87. Rod Taylor played a sheriff and former outlaw who,

June 3-June 9, 2011 TV CROSSWORD

along with his old gang, was transported from 1899 to the present day. The cast included William Lucking, Charles Napier and Richard Roundtree. I do not know of an authorized video release and, as I said above, I do not recommend unauthorized ones. YouTube has the pilot episode posted in six parts (although the sixth part stops before the show ends). Q: I was wondering if you could tell me how the dancers and the stars are paired on Dancing With the Stars. Do they draw straws? A: It’s not random, because the show wants interesting combinations. DWTS pro Mark Ballas — after noting that he does not pick his partners — told me that height is a factor (so tallish, leggy Derek Hough would get tallish, leggy partners). But personality is important, too; the show would not have paired Bristol Palin, one of Ballas’ partners, with Maks Chmerkovskiy because he would have not had the patience to work with Palin. And age comes into play. Ballas’ father, Corky, appeared on the show with older partners Cloris Leachman and Florence Henderson.
