While Quinn acts as the archetypical character come to clean up the town, “The Ranger” avoids stereotypes and cliches. Atkins understands the beauty and ruggedness of rural Mississippi, from feel of dirt roads that lead nowhere, former farmland now used for timber, and, unfortunately, the smell of meth labs. “The land ... clear-cut down to nothing, making the whole landscape feel used.” “The Ranger” starts a new series for Atkins, but he hasn’t finished reinventing himself.

Curtain isn’t drawn yet with Randys on tap
Even though Community Actors’ Studio Theatre’s past season ended with Boomers, the curtain isn’t closed yet. This year of great stage variety at McClellan Theatre by CAST will come alive again at the 6th Annual Randy Awards Night on June 25, and everyone’s invited. The awards night will be at the Anniston Museum of Natural History beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event, in memory of CAST founder Randy Hall, allows a celebration — one more time — to Hervey display the year’s talent, enjoy the Folsom Artists in Action laughs, remember the favorite songs and reflect on the dramatic stories told. It is a time of rewards. It is a time to recognize volunteers who helped deliver the playwrights’ words from the page to the stage, based on the Tony Awards. It is a time of thanking them for their work and commitment. It is also a time to be entertained by a medley of short scenes, directed by Kim Dobbs, which are representative of the musicals and plays CAST just presented. CAST Kidz will also perform an act, “Under the Sea,” from the musical The Little Mermaid. Dinner, catered by Classic on Noble, is at 7 p.m. The cost is $25 per ticket. Reservations must be made by June 20 by calling CAST at 256-820-CAST, or via the CAST website (www.castalabama.com) or by filling out and mailing in the notice in the last CAST newsletter. CAST’s mailing address is CAST Inc. P.O. Box 185, Anniston, AL 36202. Also, see CAST on Facebook. The appropriate dress is semi-formal to formal wear. A raffle will be held for small items and a silent auction for larger ones. Kimberly Davenport is serving as event chairperson, and Jon Garlick will be master of ceremony. The past season’s shows were Grease, Miracle on 34th Street, Dearly Departed and Boomers. True to tradition, there were goals to meet — against the odds — in each production. There were so many people in Grease that it was difficult to gather the entire group in one room all at the same time to rehearse, the artistic director said. In December, Miracle on 34th Street, with both adult and child actors, was a delight to audiences. But the 34 different scenes that had to be quickly changed required manpower and some swift moving. In Boomers, a musical revue of the 1950s and 1960s, the blending of voices was a must, but the hardest goal met was casting the Aretha Franklin role. After three attempts in casting from within the community, Atlanta actress and singer Valerie Payton was
selected by Dobbs. Trophies bearing the comedy and tragedy masks are called “Randys” in honor of Hall, the CAST founder and also a journalist and arts critic for The Star. Printed interviews with Hall reveal that writing plays came natural for him. A conversation with the playwright by Montgomery freelance writer Sunshine Huff (who wrote for First Draft, the journal of the Alabama Writers’ Forum) was reprinted in The Star Aug. 20, 1988, with First Draft’s permission. According to this printed interview, Randy Hall wanted to write for the theater since he was 12. He saw his first play when Town & Gown Theatre of Birmingham toured The Man Who Came to Dinner. Later, he fell in love with musical theater when seeing his next play, The Boyfriend, also by Town & Gown. That’s when Hall’s interest in writing plays began, and, fortunately for our area, he actively developed his interest. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Alabama. The writer later found the course of study on playwriting he preferred at Temple University in Philadelphia. Hall returned to Anniston and had at least seven plays produced in this area, some of which have been presented around the country: Arts& Leisure, Human Interest, Grover, Chopin Live, The Widow’s Best Friend, (twice in Anniston) Black Warrior, and Heartaches: The Unauthorized Biography of Patsy Cline. The evening’s fanfare builds toward a crescendo when the Edel Ayers Award, an engraved silver bowl, will be presented. It is given to the individual who has gone far beyond the regular duties in making the shows happen. Mrs. Ayers is fondly remembered for organizing the first Little Theatre in Anniston, with the help of the Players’ Guild, a group of residents actively interested in theater. The curtain rose “hopefully” as the history states, on the first play, The Dover Road, in 1927 at the old Anniston High School. And, according to records, “the house was packed.” Records state that the community theater movement here was established at this time. CAST is keeping Mrs. Ayers’ and Hall’s ambitious spirit alive, but the theater needs support from the community. Come and learn more about the medium of dramatic arts and the fun it can be by attending the Randy Awards.

Music at McClellan
Concert series set to end on classic note By Alison Gene Smith asmith@annistonstar.com
They’ll be Bach. The performances at Music at McClellan’s scaled-back concert series this year have been anything but scaled back, and the series will end this weekend on a classical note. The last concert will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Monteith Amphitheater at McClellan with a variety of music from the chamber music division of the Etowah Youth Orchestra. Tom Potts, chair of the Longleaf Arts Council, which organized the series, said this year’s concerts have gone well and featured a variety of performers. “It’s been mostly just regional folks we all knew who were high quality,” he said. “We’ve had steel drums, jazz, acoustic guitar, folk, now finally a little classical music.” For the upcoming concert, the orchestra will be broken up into smaller groups based on instrument. “There’ll be a wide mix of selections,” director of the orchestra, Michael Gagliardo, said. Gagliardo said a string group will play selections from Bach as well as some current pop music and Broadway musical songs. A saxophone group will play music by several Russian composers, and a brass quintet will perform Baroque period music along with a set of spirituals. A woodwind section will also play traditional music as well as more modern pieces. Each group will play for about 20 to 25 minutes, Gagliardo said. “The audience will be hearing sampling of different components of the youth orchestra program,” he said. Although the orchestra is based in Etowah County, several students in the group live in Calhoun County. Gagliardo said there are students from Jacksonville, Anniston and Weaver in the groups performing. “In the past few years, the Etowah Youth Orchestra has branched out to be more of a regional orchestra,” he said. “What we wanted to do in
Rock’s HoF opens new Beatles exhibit CLEVELAND — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland has opened the world’s most comprehensive collection of items from The Beatles as part of the first redesign in the facility’s 15year history. The exhibit announced Wednesday features nearly 70 items, including several that are being displayed for the first time, such as Paul McCartney’s handwritten arrangement for the song “Birthday.” Visitors also can see guitars played by John Lennon and George Harrison and the logo drum head from the kit that Ringo Starr used on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in February 1964. The items have gone on display as part of a museum redesign that is funded by part of the Rock Hall’s $35 million capital campaign and is expected to be complete by next year. Potts said one of the long-term goals at Longleaf is to have art councils across the region share their schedules and work with other counties. This year the Music at McClellan series was scaled back by design, while the amphitheater is renovated, Potts said. The new stage and back stage area are almost ready, and the hillside where the audience sits has been terraced. “The land was a little too soft and the holder grass had grown way too long,” he said. “We couldn’t put people in the area so we’re doing a more intimate set of concerts.” Potts said they have been mostly advertising the shows on Facebook and through word-of-mouth. The concerts this year were free and the audience has been sitting
on the stage while performers play with their back to the future finished amphitheater seating area. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Potts said. “You get the performers’ perspective.” After some of the music series’ past locations became unavailable, Potts said the council decided to go with the Monteith Amphitheater for its new home. “It has a lot of historical significance most people don’t know about,” he said. Some of the first racial integration of the Army took place on the stage, said Potts, including the commissioning of Buffalo Soldiers. “Joe Lewis fought an exhibition fight; Bob Hope and Marlene Dietrich did a USO show. I grew up here, and I didn’t know all this stuff,” Potts said. Monteith was abandoned in the late 1960s or early 1970s, and Potts said it has been a huge effort to get it back. He encourages people who haven’t seen the renovations to come to the free concert on Saturday to get acquainted. “Bring a lawn chair and a cooler and imagine the possibilities,” he said.

Stampede of sound
Iconic Buffalo Springf ield rides into Bonnaroo for summer’s lone festival show By Chris Talbott Associated Press
MANCHESTER, Tenn. — Richie Furay knows a little something about miracles in his new career as a preacher. A Buffalo Springfield reunion may not strictly qualify as a one. But like most folks he’d written off the possibility when the band famously flamed out in 1968, ending a short but incandescent run that would ripple through music for decades to come. “People have asked me did I think The Buffalo Springfield would ever get back together again, and my answer was a short, ‘Never, it’s not gonna happen,’” Furay said in a phone interview last Saturday before the band’s soundcheck in Los Angeles. “That old saying, ‘Never say never,’ is true.” The surviving members of the California quintet — Furay, Stephen Stills and Neil Young — will make their only festival appearance this year on Saturday at Bonnaroo, serving as a focal point for an event heavy on bands influenced by the folk- and country-rock pioneers. Young first broached the idea of a reunion in a song, “Buffalo Springfield Again” from 2000’s “Silver & Gold,” and finally reached out personally last year to invite Furay and Stills to join him at his annual Bridge School benefit concert in October. Fans cheered the reunion and, more importantly, the band enjoyed it. Over the years their relationships sometimes bore the lingering strain of that 1960s breakup. But not this time. Things were so much fun, they made plans for a six-date minitour in California to warm up for Bonnaroo and have since announced a fall tour. There’s a harmony these days that didn’t exist during the band’s revolvingdoor run from 1966-68. “Nobody’s looking for a career move or anything,” Furay said. “This isn’t a career move. This is just a bunch of guys who played music together 40 years ago having fun, readdressing the music that we played, and there’s no agendas. ... Man, it’s so much more relaxed and I am going to speak for Neil and for Stephen, we’re just having fun. There’s no reason to be doing this if everyone isn’t having fun and everyone’s having fun. that feels just as stormy. “Just the faces have changed,” said Furay, who now lives in Colorado. The ideas and influences of Buffalo Springfield can be felt every year at Bonnaroo, an all-genre event that nevertheless has a soft spot for roots rock. You could easily call bands like Mumford & Sons, My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Ray LaMontagne, Old Crow Medicine Show and many others in the festival’s four-day lineup distant descendants of Buffalo Springfield. Organizers of Bonnaroo, which kicks off Thursday, think it was a coup to land the reunited act’s only festival date. It also was another chance to look forward by looking back. “I think Bonnaroo has always been about presenting not only sort of what is current and breaking but also artists that have influenced a lot of the music that our audience is listening to,” Bonnaroo co-creator Rick Farman of Superfly Productions said. “And there’s always been a thing within sort of the rock world of looking back at the sort of predecessors, the ones who created the pathways for the new artists and sort of putting them up on a pedestal to be experienced in that way. Saturday night’s performance will be Young’s first return to Manchester since a scorching 2003 solo show that Farman and his friends place among the top five performances in the 10-year history of the festival. “That was a transcendent moment for the festival for I think a lot of us who produce it personally and I think for the audience,” Farman said. “So, you know, having him back and having him in this configuration is really exciting.” Furay says it’s an exciting prospect for the band as well and perhaps just one in a long line of steps these old friends will take together. No one has committed to anything beyond the fall tour, but there are songs being written. “We haven’t discussed, you know, ‘Hey, we’re going to sit down and we’re going to write 10 new songs,’” Furay said. “Neil’s so prolific anyway. Stephen told me the other day he had a song. I’ve been writing music. So I just think it’s obvious that something may transpire like that, it may come to pass.”

Heat up your summer playlist It’s hot outside. Real hot. Straight up sweltering. When it’s this hot, there is only one remedy for the soul-crushing heat: Roll your windows down and crank up some tunes. But you can’t just be blaring anything while you’re cruisin’ down Bobby Quintard. No, Bozeman you need a sumPop mer anthem, a Cultured song that goes well with air and sun. Don’t worry, I got your back. Here are some cool songs to help you stave off a heat stroke in 2011.
Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks” For those who dig: Phoenix, MGMT, Vampire Weekend and The Shins Genre: Indie-pop This song has been on YouTube for a little more than a year now, but it has just started making waves this year and it could be your summer anthem. They’re fresh off playing Austin’s hip South by Southwest and have been cultivating a good deal of buzz. The song has a lightness to it that is reminiscent of The Shins, but has the right level of synth sound to make it feel at home with the indie sound of this decade. Their album Torches was released May 23 and is available for download on iTunes; I highly recommend it.
Florence Welch of the band Florence + The Machine rocks it out on the summer track ‘Cosmic Love.’ Chris Pizzello/Associated Press/File
They garnered a Grammy nomination this year for Best New Artist and have dominated the charts across the pond. “Cosmic Love” is slated to be the seventh and final single off of their album Lungs, and despite its mystical quality and Florence Welch’s love of the harp, this song rocks something serious. It’s got a fast, hard-hitting beat that plays best when it surrounds you in a car.
The Strokes, “Under Cover of Darkness”
For those who dig: The White Stripes, The Black Keys and The Artic Monkeys Genre: Garage Rock / Post-Punk Ladies and Gentlemen, The Strokes are back from hiatus and “Under Cover of Darkness” is their first single since 2006’s “You Only Live Once.” Julian Casablancas is in top form vocally in this track and his songwriting is as solid as ever. Man Man’s latest isn’t for the kids With its antic xylophone and jaunty horns, Man Man’s fourth album often sounds like circus music. But “Life Fantastic” is not one for the kids. Less Ringling Brothers than Cirque du Surreal, such songs as “Haute Tropique” and “Knuckle Down” are tales of killers and their victims, both metaphorical and actual. Ironically, the album’s dark worldview is evident because of cleaner production. Known for Man Man, chaotic live performances, “Life Fantastic” Man Man used to carry that fervor into the studio. A string section supplements the band on several tracks; jazzy rhythms often supplant rock’s four-four beat. Yet Man Man is fundamentally a rock band, and not just because of electric-guitar solos like the one that sears the title track. It’s a matter of attitude. This is music for people who — as Honus exhorts in “Piranhas Club” — “gotta smash some plates to relax.” — Washington Post

Super 8 is the rarest of things this time of year: a summer blockbuster that’s completely earnest and irony-free, not filled with cheeky pop-culture references or cheesy product placement. The effects, while spectacular, also happen to be germane to the plot, and they have an intimate, tactile quality, rather than seeming too glossy or removed from reality. (And they’re not in 3-D. Yes, it is indeed possible.) So all you’re left with is ... story. And strong performances. And well-developed characters. And a believable emotional arc. And genuine thrills. And that’s apropos, given that it’s a love letter to the man who skillfully wove together all those elements in inventing the modern blockbuster. J.J. Abrams has crafted a loving, meticulously detailed homage to Steven Spielberg, who’s one of the film’s producers — specifically, the director’s work from the late 1970s and early ‘80s — but it never feels like a rip-off, and it certainly never lapses into parody. As writer and director, Abrams effectively conveys a mood — a mixture of innocence, fear and ultimately hope
Fong’s work repeatedly calls to mind Close Encounters of the Third Kind — in a good way.) Some sort of strange encounter is indeed happening in the small, blue-collar town of Lillian, Ohio, in the summer of 1979. First comes the train crash, a marvel of screeching wheels and fiery, flying freight cars that a group of aspiring filmmakers just happens to witness while — that Spielberg managed to create again shooting a low-budget zombie flick on and again. deputy sheriff, are both struggling with the death of Joe’s mother months early in an industrial accident; they don’t know how to grieve individually and they don’t know how to support each other, either. Joe finds a welcome distraction in serving as a makeup artist and supporting player for his best friend, Charlie (Riley Griffiths), a bossy film nerd working on his latest production. Even before the train crash sent everyone into a tizzy, Joe had found himself swept up in his first crush: on the film’s leading lady, the teenaged Alice, played by Elle Fanning with her usual preternatural poise and ethereal beauty. But the accident itself, while frightening, isn’t necessarily a bad thing to these kids; as Charlie boisterously points out, it also adds production values. A love of movies infuses every moment of Super 8, and not just the work of Spielberg. Abrams borrows heavily but he also tells a story that’s very much its own entity. The idea that being a part of a film can provide a gateway to an exciting, new life — regardless of which side of the camera you’re on — is infectious, and so devoid of cynicism that’s it’s hard not to be charmed. That feeling carries through all the way to the closing credits, so make sure you stay in your seat for the full payoff.

‘True Grit,’ ‘The Company Men,’ ‘Another Year’ top this week’s releases By Bruce Dancis McClatchy Newspapers
Revenge in the Old West and the pain of modern corporate downsizing are the subjects of this week’s biggest DVD releases, but a lost film from the 1930s, some vintage home movies of baseball greats and a slice of life from British director Mike Leigh are also worth checking out. True Grit (Paramount Home Entertainment, $19.99/$29.99 Blu-ray and DVD combo pack, rated PG-13): The scenery-chewing role of cantankerous U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the scenic True Grit must have a built-in guarantee to attract Academy Award voters. John Wayne won his only best actor Oscar for his over-the-top performance in the original 1969 movie, taking home the award that should have gone to Dustin Hoffman for Midnight Cowboy. (On the other hand, Wayne should have won Oscars for his earlier performances in Red River and The Searchers.) Jeff Bridges, only slightly less showoffy than Wayne, scored his second consecutive best actor nomination (following his victory in Crazy Heart) in this 2010 version from the Coen Brothers. Otherwise, this is a solid and entertaining chase Western, shot in Texas and New Mexico and featuring clever dialogue spoken by Bridges, 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, James Brolin and Barry Pepper. But anyone looking for Coenesque quirks and surprises won’t find many here. Special

Hailee Steinfeld, left, and Matt Damon in a scene from ‘True Grit,’ released this week on DVD. features include short documentaries on the look, dress and weapons of the American West in the 1880s; the Blu-ray edition also contains a feature on Charles Portis, the writer of the 1968 novel True Grit. The Company Men (Anchor Bay/The Weinstein Company, $29.98/$39.99 Blu-ray, rated R): Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper deliver fine performances as corporate executives whose lives and self-esteem are turned upside down when they lose their jobs, in writer-director John Wells’ sensitive drama about corporate downsizing and its impact on those who are laid off. In this morality play pitting bad capitalist vs. good capitalist, the layoffs come after the top executive (Craig T. Nelson) of GTX, a Boston-area conglomerate, decides to increase his firm’s profits by eliminating thousands of jobs. This decision infuriates his oldest friend, company co-founder and No. 2 man (Tommy Lee
Jones), who yearns for the old days when their business made something tangible (building ships) and paid thousands of workers a decent wage. Kevin Costner, sporting a decent working-class Boston accent, is also good as Affleck’s brother-in-law, a hard-working guy who runs a small construction company. Special features include a commentary by Wells, an alternate ending, deleted scenes and a “making-of” documentary. Another Year (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $38.96 Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, rated PG13): British writer-director Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Vera Drake, Happy-Go-Lucky) always seems to obtain terrific, naturalistic performances from his actors, many of whom appear repeatedly in his movies. This is certainly the case with this drama, set over a period of four seasons in one year, about a longmarried couple, Tom and Gerri (Jim Broadbent and
Ruth Sheen), whose stable and loving relationship stands in sharp contrast with the difficult and unhappy lives of some of their closest friends. Lesley Manville (who played Broadbent’s wife in Leigh’s Topsy-Turvy) is particularly good as one such friend, a fragile but narcissistic co-worker of Gerri’s who’s fighting a losing struggle to remain young and sexy. Yet as much as one admires the realism of these actors, the story Leigh has given them is often depressing and hard to watch. Then again, such is life, sometimes. Bonus features include a commentary with Leigh and Manville, a “making-of” documentary and a look at Leigh’s methodology of developing his script and his characters out of research and improvisation.

Then, her parents inform her they’re heading to California for a little while, leaving Judy and her younger brother, Stink (Parris Mosteller) alone with their Aunt Opal (Heather Graham), whom they’ve never met. So the summer that Judy hoped would be “double-rare” (her word for good) instead looks like it’ll be a bummer. But hey, what do you know? Aunt Opal is one of those wacky aunts, the kind who like to do art projects in the middle of the living room and make elaborate feasts that destroy the kitchen. The kind you only see in movies. Graham, to her credit, doesn’t overdo the zaniness and plays the character with a loose, hippie vibe. So Judy learns how to stop worrying and love the summer. But the character is drawn so thinly, she just comes off as a narcissistic, whiny brat. And that’s a problem, since we’re supposed to like her. Instead, she makes you want to yell, “Come on, kid, it can’t be that bad. Go get a paper route or something.” Oh, wait — this takes place in the present day. Never mind.

Review: ‘inFamous 2’ is a shockingly slick sequel By Derrik J. Lang Associated Press
There’s no lack of superheroes on the big screen this summer with Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America receiving the film treatment. However, one of the most electrifying wonders to debut in recent years will only be found on video game consoles. He’s less legendary than the X-Men, but Cole MacGrath packs just as much punch. “inFamous 2” (Sony, for PlayStation 3, $59.99) finds the growly messengerturned-marvel, who spent most of his original 2009 adventure honing his ability to control electricity, in a second free-running mission to bring down the Beast, a gigantic villain foreshadowed during the climax of the first game. This time everything is bigger, badder and brasher. After the first battle with the Beast goes awry, Cole retreats to New Marais, a stylish rendition of a swampy Southern town that’s more of a character than some of the humans depicted in the game. From intricate balcony-lined city streets to a flood-ravaged suburban neighborhood, the details laced throughout this virtual take on New Orleans are astounding. The sprawling town, which is slowly revealed to the player as the story pro-

The story picks up a month after the first game ended, and Cole has most of his previous powers intact. The game makers
have smartly included some bonuses for players who finished the original “inFamous,” as well as a few nods to the heroic or villainous choices they made the first time around. Those who didn’t play the first installment might feel left out. The plot of “inFamous 2” allows players to make karmic decisions at predetermined points that impact the story line. At one juncture, for example, Cole will
be asked to choose between two superpowered allies to share abilities with before continuing further. That new superpowered concoction invigorates the often frantic gameplay. Like its predecessor, “inFamous 2” excels at making gamers feel similar to the superheroes they’ll see in theaters this summer without the all-consuming constraints of actually portraying such wellknown creations. The developers at Sucker Punch Productions have also achieved a fine balance with Cole, who never feels too powerful, even the second time around. Besides gaining new abilities, Cole has a few fresh tricks up his sleeve, including electric poles that blast him up buildings and a much-need melee weapon. The other major addition is a user-generated mode that allows players to create new levels within New Marais, though this feature feels unnecessary and ultimately diminishes from the experience. The only frustration with “inFamous 2” might be the lack of an impactful score akin to the “Uncharted” games, especially given the game’s jazzy setting, but that’s a minor quibble with a follow-up that’s so flawlessly electrifying that it will no doubt leave players feeling satisfied — and charged up for another “inFamous” installment.
Nintendo’s Wii U appeals to gamers across the spectrum Nintendo unveiled its next generation console to a fanfare of applause at the Electronic Entertainment Expo on Tuesday. The IBMpowered console is much more powerful than you would expect from Nintendo, Chris Pittman a company that isn’t often iSpy known for high specification devices. The computer organization even claims that part of the technology used in the supercomputer Watson will be present in the Wii U. I guess you can confirm a
Jeopardy game. All that aside, it’s what you’ll be holding in your hands that is the big draw of Nintendo’s latest creation. The controller is a sight to behold. A 6.2-inch touch screen highlights a pad that is nothing like the standard controller of yesterday. It also features two circular control sticks, a dpad, four front-facing buttons and 4 triggers. That’s right! No more ridiculous waggle controls! Sort of. The Wii U will be completely backward compatible with the original Wii in software and certain accessories, including controllers and the balance board. No idea if virtual console purchases will transfer over. The new controller allows for some amazing things. No

The Wii U video game console will feature a new touchscreen controller. more will a fight break out if a friend or family member wants to watch television while you’re
playing. The game simply moves to the touch screen on the controller. This opens up a plethora of opportunities for developers as well. Games will be made that take advantage of having two screens. Developers can also opt to use the controller’s screen as an information provider on health, ammo and/or current location in a level. The presentation shown this week in Los Angeles was probably all that some game makers needed to see. It took one day for Nintendo to get the hype train going full speed. Several third-party developers appeared in a short video talking about their initial experience with the Wii U. It’s refreshing to see Nintendo gaining the trust of outside developers for its new console.
The fact that bloodbath slasher Ninja Gaiden 3 is targeted for the console speaks volumes. Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders II and Assassin’s Creed are also on the docket for the new system. Let’s not forget that the Gamecube had a pretty good array of mature third-party titles when it was first released. The staying power of the support will be critical in the success of Nintendo’s latest endeavor. I’ve warmed up to the Wii U after initial disappointment from the console’s unveiling. The next Mario, Metroid and Zelda games are going to look amazing with all that horsepower. This could be the first major Nintendo console that appeals to the core gamer since the Super Nintendo. Is your body ready?

Air Force historian Daniel Haulman, co-author of a new book on the Tuskegee Airmen, will speak at the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County on Thursday, from 3-4 p.m. in the Ayers Room. The Tuskegee Airmen, An Illustrated History: 1939-1949 (NewSouth Books) uses photographs – many never before published – to trace the history of the Airmen, the only African-American military pilots in World War II. The hundreds of images also chronicle the non-flying support staff, from doctors and nurses to mechanics, navigators, weathermen and parachute riggers. The book also debunks some of the myths that have grown up around the Tuskegee Airmen, and includes a complete roster of pilots and chronology of missions. Haulman, a historian with the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, is co-author along with archivists Joseph Caver and Jerome Ennels.

Get outside ... and turn it up Much like watermelon, live music is just better when it’s enjoyed outside. With a strong selection of amphitheaters within a twohour drive of east central Alabama, the choices this summer are many to hear some of the top national artists. The concerts are too numerous to list, but here’s our selections of the must-see actions on tour this summer.
Submitted artist rendering
Verizon Wireless Music Center (PELHAM): If you’ve slipped away from the music scene in the past few years, you would probably know this location better as the Oak Mountain Amphitheater. There’s three tiers of seating, which holds 10,500 and there’s also no longer lawn seating.
Georgia ASO Classic Chastain: Located near Atlanta, this is one of the more classy venues to see a concert. Their policies on food and drink can sometimes be liberal, but make sure you check ahead first. They may not get some of the bigger acts, but with the setting it makes every concert quite an experience. Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood: It’s the biggest of all the Atlanta outdoor musical venues and has been in operation since 1989, when it was built with nothing else in mind but bringing in big acts. The sound quality and their ability to cater to the musicians’ whims where lighting is concerned makes this one of the best in the Southeast. Oh, and there’s not a bad seat in the house. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park: The address is Alpharetta, Ga., but it’s all really Atlanta. Just slightly larger than Alabama’s Verizon (12,000 seats, which are set on a 45-acre complex). In 2010, it ranked in the Top 20 by Pollstar for ticket sales for outdoor parks and has twice been awarded “Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue.” It’s easy to get to — relatively speaking with Atlanta traffic — just minutes off GA 400. The venue also serves as the summer home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. — From staff reports
Catch him now while you still can Riverfest isn’t a recurring amphitheater venue as the others, but at least for this weekend, it will fill the criteria of outdoor music. And it’s really tough to pinpoint exactly who the marquee artist is among the lineup — but it’s hard not to give a nod to country singer Randy Travis. Somewhat removed from his star status of decades past, Travis has been making a push of late. Although, that kind of backfired. On Wednesday, Travis was making his rounds on the morning shows in New York when things got hairy. Page Six, a celebrity gossip website, said he was “out of it” and punched a wall during a taping at Fox & Friends and at Good Day New York, they just stopped taping altogether. Travis’ camp has not released a statement about the alleged events or denied Page Six’s reports. It was all to celebrate his 18th album, Anniversary Celebration, which marks his 25th year in the big time. It was released on Tuesday.

Among the other artists are: Leah Seawright, Drivin N Cryin, The Guess Who, Sugar Ray, , Bo Bice and Jessie James. Rapper Flo Rida had originally been scheduled to perform at the event, but is no longer among the artists on the Riverfest website. Rida was arrested in Miami ealry Thursday mornrida ing and charged with a DUI while driving a Bugatti Veyron, a $1.7million sports car. He was pulled over after driving erratically.
If you’re in a retro kind of mood Random sounds If none of the others suited your taste, there’s plenty more music out there for everybody. From the Temptations & The Four Tops (Chastain, July 27) to the opposite end of the spectrum with two nights of jam band Phish (June 1415) at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta, Ga. That show is sold out, but there’s always tickets in the lot.
Yes, that’s (from left) Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil and Tommy Lee — otherwise known as Motley Crue. And, yes, they’re still playing music. The ’80s hair band is coming to the Verizon Wireless Music Center (Oak Mountain) on July 9th. If you want to catch them with fellow rockers Poison, drive on over to Atlanta the next night where they’ll be playing Aaron’s Amphitheater at Lakewood.
And they’re far from the only blast from the past touring this summer. At the Delta Classic Chastain Park Amphitheater will be: Steve Miller Band (June 24), Huey Lewis & The News (July 23) and Steely Dan (Aug. 6). Lakewood has Def Leppard and Heart (June 18). While it’s at the tail end of the summer, Lakewood also has Journey, Foreigner and Night Ranger (Sept. 16).

T hey’re a little bit country Yes, we know what part of the country we live in. And yes, music promoters do, too. There’s no shortage of country acts coming locally. The closest will be Miranda Lambert coming to the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater (July 22). The biggest bang for your buck may be with a drive over to Georgia where you can see Rascal Flatts with Sara Evans, Easton Corbin and Justin Moore at Lakewood on July 28.

Bon Jovi has still got it going on — and must. With a ticket price of $102.67, his summer tour is proving to be a big draw.

Freeman asks huge questions in the second season of ‘Wormhole’ By Frazier Moore Associated Press
NEW YORK — Morgan Freeman calls his mindexpanding series “Through the Wormhole,” but he doesn’t recommend you take the title literally. “Here’s the thing about going into a wormhole: Where are you going to come out?” He chuckles. “And if you go in, you can’t be worrying about getting back. So I don’t know about that.” What Freeman does know is, he likes taking mind trips. He likes asking big questions and seeing where his mental odyssey will take him. He’s at it again for a second season of “Through the Wormhole,” which premiered Wednesday at 10 p.m. on cable’s Science channel. And these questions loom bigger than any single answer. Episodes will deal with such puzzlers as: Are there more than three dimensions? What do aliens look like? Is there an edge to the universe? Can we live forever? This week, Freeman starts things off with a bang by inquiring: Is there life after death? “Is the soul a myth, or one of the fundamental elements of the universe?” he poses on the episode. “Where does consciousness come from? And where does it go when we die?” “Ultimately, every one of us will discover the truth,” Freeman tells his audience consolingly. “But will we ever enter our final hour knowing our fate?” Freeman seems the perfect guy to lead this kind of quest. An Oscar-winning actor who, by the way, has played God in not one but two films (“Bruce Almighty” and “Evan Almighty”), he has a reassuring, even soulful manner that makes the cosmological feel not quite so overwhelming. “We’re just asking questions,” he gently sums up during a recent interview. “You can ask ANY question, can’t you? “I’m not really scientific. I’m just an itinerant actor. I’m just curious. So how do I get to be hosting this science show? I enjoy this stuff! It fascinates me.” For Freeman, who turned 74 on June 1, such questions have fascinated him since high school. “I wasn’t interested in science or math-oriented,” he says. “I’m not leftbrain at all. But when I was a senior, one of my classes was physics. I was an A student. Not because I knew anything. I just asked questions. The instructor would be talking and I’d raise my hand, and get the discussion going in a new direction.”
As a producer as well as narrator-host of “Through the Wormhole,” he gets to help pick the questions. For him, they are questions that, however far-reaching, sometimes hit close to home. On this week’s episode, he recalls how he began wondering if there is life after death: “One morning when I was 6 years old, my grandmother didn’t wake up — then or ever again. It was my first experience with death.” He also gets to help decide which experts are tapped to take a stab at each big question. On the premiere, we meet a Harvard University neurosurgeon who miraculously emerged, back to normal, from deep-coma state. Though a scientist to his core, he speaks earnestly of having been a speck on the wing of a butterfly which was soaring over a beautiful meadow, then left this universe for a realm beyond whose major constituent, he says, was love. Evidence of an afterlife? Another scientist voices his theory that a person’s consciousness is entangled through the whole brain and, moreover, can migrate outside the brain. Upon death, the quantum information housed in that person’s brain is absorbed into the universe as that person’s enduring soul. But another scientist — a socalled “materialist” — argues that the “soul” is the result of neurons firing on a massive scale within the brain. When the brain ceases to function, the “soul” is kaput. And yet another specialist proposes that a person’s “soul” is actually a feedback loop of that person’s accumulating experience. As such, it’s a self-aware network of brain connections that has evolved over millions of years, informed by everything and everyone that went before — a sort of collective soul. “Through the Wormhole” is chockfull of such varying, often clashing explanations for the biggest riddles life has to offer. For someone who delves deep into these mysteries, is the absence of clearcut solutions frustrating? Not for Freeman. “Any question that dogs me I’ve answered,” he declares. “Is there a God? Well, I’ve answered that. I know, absolutely. My answer is, yes.” He chuckles. “Now WHO that is, is where I get into trouble. But I’ve got enough operating certainty to ease my mind. I don’t have to be too concerned.” For Freeman, heady questions without answers can be simply good fun.

Some stars going missing on TV LOS ANGELES — Prime-time stars — they’re dropping like corpses on “CSI.” Word leaked late Tuesday that Laurence Fishburne will leave CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” after just 21/2 seasons as Dr. Raymond Langston. CBS hasn’t picked a replacement yet, but with Ashton Kutcher substituting for Charlie Sheen on “Two and a Half Men,” CBS will start the 2011-12 season with new leads on at least two of its signature series. Meanwhile, the exit of Christopher Meloni as a detective on NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” has thrown that show into disarray, with Mariska Hargitay signed on for a reduced role and executives in an 11th-hour scramble to make a deal with costar Ice-T. And Lisa Edelstein, who plays Hugh Laurie’s boss Cuddy on Fox’s medical drama “House,” is also jumping ship, she reportedly couldn’t come to terms on a new contract. In Fishburne’s case, it’s unclear why he’s leaving his role as the pathologist who replaced Gil Grissom (William Petersen) as the show’s focal character. “Not sure why he chose not to return but he did,” Alan Nierob, Fishburne’s publicist, wrote in an email. CBS declined to comment. A breakdown in contract talks would seem a likely culprit. At one time, “CSI” was TV’s No. 1 show, but the 2010-11 season was the least-watched ever, with an average of just 13.7 million total viewers, according to the Nielsen Co. — Los Angeles Times

Fox decides to scale back ‘America’s Most Wanted’
June 10-June 16, 2011 TV CROSSWORD TV CROSSWORD
By Rich Heldenfels Akron Beacon Journal
Q: Is it true that they are taking America’s Most Wanted off the air? The program that gets criminals caught that the police cannot catch or find? Is the TV company giving in to the GREED of more money from sports? A: The Fox show, which has been a regular presence on Fox since 1988, will continue but as two-hour specials each quarter instead of a weekly series. The show has not made money for Fox “in quite awhile,” Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said, according to published reports. And, let’s not forget, networks want to make money. Still, given the show’s importance and long history with the network, Fox did want to keep the franchise going with the specials. By the way, Fox is not replacing it with sports but with reruns of other programming, a fairly common practice by broadcast networks these days. In fact, CBS raised eyebrows by putting a first-run scripted series, Rules of Engagement, in its Saturday lineup for fall. Q: What is going on with TV these days? Why have so many great shows been canceled? Kings, Damages, The Event, V, The Cape, Detroit 1-8-7 — all interesting, thought provoking, super creative, substantial, responsible, well portrayed and fun to experience — are no longer available for anyone, including those of us with super, normal and even average intelligence. Are they politically or philosophically correct, or incorrect, or what? Next we’ll be hearing that shows like The Good Wife and The Chicago Code are doomed. Are they not superficial, dumb, juvenile or crass enough? A: First of all, Damages will be back, but on DirecTV, beginning July 13. And The Good Wife has been picked up for a third season. On the other hand, Fox did drop The Chicago Code. While I understand your unhappiness about some shows — I am a fan of Chicago Code and Detroit 1-8-7, too, and thought The Cape was promising — viewers make their choices for their own reasons, including a longing for escapism. But that does not mean they embrace only the “superficial, dumb, juvenile or crass.” I don’t think it’s a reflection on my intelligence that I was unenthusiastic about The Event or V. The coming broadcast TV season will include the returns of not only The Good Wife but Blue Bloods, NCIS, CSI, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood and Community, all of which have their merits; you may find something to like in new series such as the Americanized version of Prime Suspect or the new comedy 2 Broke Girls. There will also be more down the road of cable series such as Justified, The Closer, Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men. TV has always had a mix of good and bad — depending on your taste. But let’s try to make some readers happy Q: As a former Philadelphian and brain aneurysm survivor, I didn’t miss an episode of Body of Proof! Will

While many shows are getting cancelled, “America’s Most Wanted” survived, but is getting scaled back. it be around again in the fall? A: Yes. The series starring Dana Delany has been picked up for a second season. Q: Glad to hear that Boardwalk Empire has been renewed. Very good series. Could you please tell us who does the theme music and where I can get it? Love that guitar work. A: The opening theme is a song called Straight Up and Down by the Brian Jonestown Massacre. It is on the band’s album Take It From the Man! and available as a download.
