A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

Continued from Page 1A both co-ops to secure more bank loans in an environment where financing is sometimes hard to get. Founded in 1961, the local coop has stores in both Piedmont and Jacksonville. For those who’ve never shopped in a co-op store, picture a feed-and-seed store, combined with a hardware outlet, with a little general merchandise thrown in. And all of it owned by a group of farmers, who started the store so they’d have a place to buy supplies. If a store makes a profit, it pays a “patronage,” essentially a dividend, to the farmers who are members. In some alternate universe, people travel in dirigibles, drive cars with Wankel rotary engines and shop at co-op stores the size of a Walmart supercenter. But in this universe, it’s Walmart who owns the big box. And Lowe’s, and Home Depot. That means co-op stores like the one in Jacksonville — just minutes away from two superstores — have their work cut out for them. Local employees wouldn’t discuss how supercenter pressure is affecting business at the local stores, but some pointed out that mergers like that between Calhoun and Cherokee co-ops are happening around the state. James Fudge, vice president of the Alabama Farmers Cooperative,

said he “didn’t think it would be wise” to discuss the mergers with the press. Dempsey, of the Piedmont store, pointed out the merger won’t change a thing for local coop shoppers. The sign outside will stay the same — though it will note the Calhoun Co-op is a division of the Cherokee co-operative. He also pointed out that even though the co-op has members, it isn’t one of those members-only discount stores like Sam’s Club. Anybody can pop in and pick up some gardening or farming supplies. “You don’t have to be a member to shop here,” he said. “It’s perceptions like that that make it harder for us to succeed.”
Jacksonville clothing store still open Another faux closing in this week’s is Neogenesis, a Jacksonville clothing store. As with the co-op, county records show Neogenesis as “dissolved.” And the doors of the Pelham Road store were shut tight late last week. But owner Inez Ragland said it’s all a matter of paperwork. Her accountant advised her that she’d be better off switching from a corporation to a limited liability company. So she’s closing the store under its old banner and re-opening with the same name, under new paperwork. Summer seems to be the time to do that. Ragland said her store, which sells jeans and T-shirts, is aimed largely at the youth market in this college town. In summertime, the living is not easy. “It’s been rocky and shaky,” she acknowledged. Still, Ragland said, she’s going to stick it out until the word gets out and customers start rolling in on a more regular basis.
Foundry may become dance studio/art house One of Anniston’s abandoned industrial hulks may soon become something completely new — a dance studio and all-around venue for local artists. Rani Welch, a Jacksonville High School graduate who founded a studio in New York City, has
returned to Calhoun County and is planning to open a “multi-functional art house” at the location now known as 0 Front Street. “It’s a beautiful old skeleton of a foundry,” she said. Welch said the location hasn’t operated as a foundry in 40 years and she isn’t sure what company owned it last. The property has been empty for so long, she said, it doesn’t have a proper address — just the number zero. Welch plans to hold dance classes here — and to host a wide variety of performances and events by local artists. She’s already working in the area, holding a dance workshop next Monday and leading a performance at Garfrerick’s on July 23. Tickets for the dinnerand-show are $45. Welch believes she can turn the old foundry into a gathering place that contributes to the community. Asked about her business model, Welch noted that art venues of this sort are common in New York, though there are none here that she knows about. She believes local people are hungry for a public venue to perform. “There’s actually a lot of live music and dance being done here, but there’s no place to bring it together,” Welch said. She says she’s found a gospel choir practices in a barber shop, Mexican traditional dancing at local Latino churches, and so on. Her studio, called FreddyJet, is scheduled to open in August.
